It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE Aristotle

Aristotle is the Great philosopher who had a vast knowledge in different disciplines. Studying different subject he contributed a lot in each of those subjects. He contributed in physics, poetry, zoology, logic, rhetoric, politics, government, ethics, and biology. This laurel Greek philosopher was born in Stagira in 384 BC. His father Nicomachus was a physician to the king Amyntas III of Macedon’s court and it is believed that their ancestors also held this position. Earlier in his life he was taught by his father at home and the medical knowledge he got from his father led him to investigate natural phenomenon later on. At the age of 18 he admitted in to the young Greek aristocracy run by Plato, another Great Greek philosopher, and Aristotle became the most favorite student of Plato. As a scientist Aristotle made a good contribution which was very influential for the development of the science over the year. Mainly he spent most of his life researching the natural science and he did the researches without making reference to the Mathematics which was later proven as the weakness of his research by the scientists. His natural science oriented research includes botany, zoology, physics, astronomy, chemistry, and meteorology, geometry and many more. He was also the teacher of the Great warrior Alexander the Great. This great philosopher died n 322 BC.

Tdap booster vaccine rates triple at family care clinics using automated reminders: 14th August, 2015

Electronic reminders at clinics helped boost rates of Tdap booster that protects against tetanus, diptheria, and whooping cough, a study shows. Guidelines recommend that adolescents and adults ages 11 and up receive a single dose of the Tdap vaccine for booster immunization even if they have had a Td (tetanus and diphtheria) vaccine within the past 10 years.

Regenerating nerve tissue in spinal cord injuries: 13th August, 2015

Researchers are exploring a new therapy using stem cells to treat spinal cord injuries within the first 14 to 30 days of injury. The therapy uses a population of cells derived from human embryonic stem cells containing progenitor cells that support nerve cells and can potentially make poorly functioning nerves function better.

Study finds little improvement in mortality rate for extremely preterm infants since 2000

About 500,000 babies are born premature in the United States each year, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Those infants, born before 37 weeks of gestation, will likely deal with the threat of numerous complications or even death. Accurate data on how those infants fare is important as doctors and parents face difficult decisions. Dr. Michael Malloy, a neonatologist and professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, recently took a closer look at the infant mortality rates of extremely preterm infants. What Malloy found and described in a paper in Journal of Perinatology was that while there were significant improvements in the infant mortality rate among extremely preterm infants before 2000, there has been little improvement since the turn of the century. Previous studies looking at extremely preterm infants - babies born after only 22 to 28 weeks of gestation - typically only look at short periods of time and often use data from specialized centers with the latest technology and treatments, Malloy said. But to get a broader view Malloy looked at infant birth and death certificates from the National Center for Health Statistics and compared the mortality rates from 1990 to 2000 and then from 2000 to 2010. He looked at more than 47,000 records and tracked the infant mortality rate for each week of gestation from 22 to 28. What Malloy found was that there was a 40 to 50 percent reduction in death for each gestational week from 1990 to 2000.

For example, the mortality rate of preterm infants born after 23 weeks of gestation decreased from 81.4 percent in 1990 to 67.8 percent in 2000. For babies born after 28 weeks the mortality rate dropped from 9.5 percent in 1990 to 6 percent in 2000. "We see a marked improvement across all these gestation ages," Malloy said. But from 2000 to 2010 there was little to no improvement in the mortality rate, he said. The difference may be related in part to the advances made in the 1990s. Advances such as the use of synthetic surfactant to prevent breathing disorders and the antenatal steroids likely helped reduce the mortality rate, Malloy said. But while improvements to techniques and technology have been made since 2000, there have been no great breakthroughs or new discoveries, Malloy said. And the mortality rate from 2000 to 2010 has not improved dramatically, he said. Malloy said he points out these trends to help both doctors and expecting parents have realistic information when it comes to extremely preterm infants. "It is attempt to temper public expectations," Malloy said. "We just can't work complete miracles. We have to accept the fact that there is a biology that we are running up against."

DRUGS UPDATES FDA Approves Keveyis (dichlorphenamide) for

Primary Hyperkalemic and Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis: 10th August, 2015 Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NYSE:TARO) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Keveyis (dichlorphenamide) 50 mg Tablets for the treatment of primary hyperkalemic and hypokalemic periodic paralysis, a group of rare hereditary disorders that cause episodes of muscle weakness or paralysis. ARCHIVE The general body meeting of APTI, Bengal Branch has been

conducted at GNIPST on 15th June, 2012. The program started witha nice presentation by Dr. Pulok Kr. Mukherjee, School of NaturalProducts, JU on the skill to write a good manuscript forpublication in impact journals. It was followed by nearly two hourlong discussion among more than thirty participants on differentaspects of pharmacy education. Five nonmember participantsapplied for membership on that very day.

GNIPST is now approved by AICTE and affiliated to WBUT forconducting the two years’ post graduate course (M.Pharm)in PHARMACOLOGY. The approved number of seat is 18.

The number of seats in B.Pharm. has been increased from 60 to120.
