It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) – Astronomer and Scientist. Galileo developed a superior telescope and made many significant discoveries in astronomy. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the inquisition for his support for the Copernican theory that the sun was at the centre of the solar system. Galileo was born in Florence, Italy in 1564 to a poor but noble family. His parents recognised their child’s innate intelligence and talents and so made sacrifices to have him educated. At his father’s insistence, Galileo studied the profitable career of medicine. But, at the University of Pisa, Galileo became fascinated in a wide range of subjects. He was also critical of many of Aristotle’s teaching which had dominated education for the past 2,000 years. Galileo was appointed to be a mathematics professor at the University of Pisa, but his strident criticisms of Aristotle left him isolated amongst his contemporaries. After three years of persecution, he resigned and went to the Yniversity of Padua, where he taught maths. His entertaining lectures attracted a large following and he was able to spend the next 18 years pursuing his interests in astronomy and mechanics. During this time, Galileo made important discoveries about gravity, inertia and also developed the forerunner of the thermometer. Galileo also worked tirelessly on the science of gnomonics (telling time by shadows) and the laws of motion.

It was in astronomy that Galileo became most famous. In particular his support for heliocentrism, he garnered the opposition of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Galileo came to the same conclusions of Copernicus – that the sun was the centre of the universe and not the earth. Galileo was also a great admirer of Johannes Kepler for his work on planetary motions; Galileo often wrote to Kepler. By inventing the world’s first telescope, Galileo was able to make many ground-breaking explorations of the universe. He found that:

• Saturn had a beautiful ring of clouds.• The moon was not flat but had mountains and craters.• Jupiter had many moons which revolved around Jupiter rather

than directly the sun.Thus, Galileo not only had the mathematical proofs of Copernicus,but, also new proof from the science of astronomy. However,Galileo knew that publishing these studies would bring thedisapproval of the church authorities. Yet, he also felt a willingnessto risk the church’s displeasure.Despite being censured by the church, Galileo continued to makediscoveries until death overtook him in 1642. Under house arrest,he was able to write Two New Sciences, this summarised his earlierwork on the new sciences now called kinematics and strength ofmaterials He was blind by the time he passed away.

NEWS UPDATE New synthetic tumor environments make cancer

research more realistic: (28th August, 2015) Tumors are notoriously difficult to study in their natural habitat -- body tissues -- but a new synthetic tissue environment may give cancer researchers the next-best look at tumor growth and behavior. Researchers have now developed a new technique to create a cell habitat of hydrogels which can realistically and quickly recreate microenvironments found across biology.

Oysters harbor, transmit human norovirus: Avoid raw ones: (28th August, 2015) Oysters not only transmit human norovirus; they also serve as a major reservoir for these pathogens, according to newresearch.

Medicinal marijuana: Patients battle stigma and misunderstanding: (28th August, 2015) New research examines the experiences of California residents who have been prescribed medical marijuana and the stigma they experience from public opinion. The findings indicate that the stigma of using medical marijuana may contribute to the under-treatment of those who might benefit from medical marijuana.

DNA 'clews' used to shuttle CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool into cells: (28th August, 2015) Researchers have for the first time created and used a nanoscale vehicle made of DNA to deliver a CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool into cells in both cell culture and an animal model.

Important steps toward developing a blood test to catch pancreatic cancer early: (28th August, 2015) Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death in the United States and has a 5-year survival rate of only 6 percent, which is the lowest rate of all types of cancer. This low survival rate is partially attributed to the difficulty in detecting pancreatic cancer at an early stage.

New embryo image processing technology could assist in IVF implantation success rates: (28th August, 2015) Biologists and engineers have developed a new non-invasive image processing technique to visualize embryo formation. Researchers were able to see, for the first time, the movement of all of the cells in living mammalian embryos as they develop under the

microscope. This breakthrough has important implications for IVF treatments and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. In the future, this approach could help with embryo selection to improve IVF success rates.

Lack of folic acid enrichment in Europe causes mortality among fetuses: (28th August, 2015) A new international study shows that 5,000 fetuses in Europe annually are affected by spina bifida and other severe defects on the central nervous system. Seventy percent of these pregnancies are terminated, while increased mortality and serious diseases affect the children who are born. At least half of the cases can be avoided by adding folic acid to staple foods as is already being done in 70 non-European countries.

Tumour suppressor genes curb growth in neighboring cells: (28th August, 2015) Researchers have unraveled a role for tumor suppressor genes in restricting the growth of neighboring cell populations. New mechanism in adrenal gland tumors

Scientists at the Helmholtz Zentrum München have elucidated a mechanism that is responsible for the development of adrenal gland tumors. They discovered that the BMP7 protein plays a key role in this process and that it could be a possible target for future treatments. The results have been published in the journal Oncotarget. Specifically, the team headed by Dr. Natalia Pellegata of the Institute of Pathology (PATH) at the Helmholtz Zentrum

München conducted a study on pheochromocytomas (PCCs). Pheochromocytomas are active adrenal gland tumors, the majority of which are benign. However, if they become malignant and spread to other tissues, the prognosis for these patients is poor. This is mainly due to the fact that currently the only treatment available for PCCs is their surgical removal. In order to develop new treatment therapies, the researchers initially examined the molecular mechanisms behind this disease. Particularly high incidence of protein BMP7 in PCC samples Initial data from patient samples shows that the growth factor BMP7 is found frequently overexpressed in samples from PCC patients. In further studies, the Helmholtz scientists examined the possible consequences of a higher level of this protein. In various functional tests, they were able to prove that elevated levels of BMP7 promote PCC cell division and cell migration. Conversely, if the protein is targeted for knockdown, this results in less invasive cells. Active substances that target the BMP7 signaling pathway kill off tumor cells The researchers identified a particular signaling pathway as the cause of this effect on the cells. The PI3K/mTOR pathway is activated by the BMP7 protein and conveys signals for the cells to divide as well as to migrate. In order to verify this mechanism and to test potential future treatments, the team used two molecules. One molecule inhibits the signal transmission of BMP7; the other blocks the PI3K/mTOR downstream signaling pathway. In an animal model of PCC we were able to show that treating the tumors with substances inhibiting BMP signaling can lead to an increase in apoptosis. Although further tests will be needed in order to confirm these results, the cancer researchers hope that they have found a new approach to future treatments.

DISEASE RELATED BREAKING NEWS Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus

(MERS-CoV) – Saudi Arabia: (26th August, 2015) Between 18 and 21 August 2015, the National IHR Focal Point for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia notified WHO of 29 additional cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection, including 6 deaths. Twenty-four (24) of these reported cases are associated with a MERS-CoV outbreak currently occurring in a hospital in Riyadh city. One (1) of these reported cases is associated with a smaller MERS-CoV outbreak currently occurring in another hospital in Riyadh city. Read more

ARCHIVE The general body meeting of APTI, Bengal Branch has been

conducted at GNIPST on 15th June, 2012. The program started witha nice presentation by Dr. Pulok Kr. Mukherjee, School of NaturalProducts, JU on the skill to write a good manuscript forpublication in impact journals. It was followed by nearly two hourlong discussion among more than thirty participants on differentaspects of pharmacy education. Five nonmember participantsapplied for membership on that very day.

GNIPST is now approved by AICTE and affiliated to WBUT forconducting the two years’ post graduate course (M.Pharm)in PHARMACOLOGY. The approved number of seat is 18.
