I see we have a ull house tonight,Mayor im Goodwin said in his openingcomments. Im happy to see all o youhere and I hope youre all still happywhen you leave. In a concise, well-mannered City Council meeting thatcame in at just under one hour (I still hadtime to rush home and catch the naleo American Idol), the mid-year budgetunanimously passed second reading sinceCouncilman Eddie Ellis was not presentto object. Ordinances establishing thenew Ocial Zoning Map o the Cityo Folly Beach and adopting the 2010Comprehensive Plan unanimously passedrst reading and both were remandedto the Planning Commission or publichearings. It was only the observations andcomments regarding scal irresponsibilityrom Councilman Pennell Clamp thatkept the meeting rom eeling like a sing-along. Kum-ba-yah!

Mid-year budgetClamp campaigned as a budget reormerand scal conservative. For years beorehis election to City Council in April,

Clamp would come in and sit down withCity Administrator oni Connor-Rooksor Zoning Administrator Aaron Pope toscrutinize City expenditures. He wantsCouncil to catch problems when theyoccur and budget the money at that timerather than alling short o unds in themiddle o the year. Id like to see us cutout this mid-year budget baloney, heasserted.

Mayor im Goodwin assured Clampthere would be no more mid-year budgetadjustments and then corrected himsel.Well, there will be no more mid-yearbudgets or the next our years (the termto which Goodwin was elected), he said.I cant promise what will happen aterthat.

Citizen Volunteer ProgramGoodwin introduced a resolution tocreate a temporary sta position (Junethrough September o this year) to getthe new Citizen Volunteer Program oto an auspicious start. Te program, brainchild o Councilman CharlieMcCarty, aims to involve residents insupport o non-criminal law enorcementand livability issues. McCarty calledthe program ve years over-due andsaid We have a valuable resource in ourcitizens that we should tap to help solveour problems.

Funding or the position is already inthe budget, according to Goodwin, andwill come rom money already allocatedor seasonal augmentation o Folly Beach

Public Saety and rom money recentlyset aside or the Beach ManagementPatrol. Lets try to get this volunteerprogram o the ground and on its eet,"he said. o volunteer call City Hall at588-2447.

Citizen CommentsElton Culpepper came with hat in handto commend Chie Boatwright on the

improved trac fow into Folly Beachsince the implementation o manualmanipulation o the light at CenterStreet and Ashley Avenue. I came herein January (with suggestions to improvethe trac situation) and I came back inMarch, and I said Id be back to say Itold you so i things didnt improve,Culpepper said, adding that it onlyseemed right to come back and thankCouncil and the Chie now that thingshad gotten better. He has a birds eyeview o the trac rom his perch at thePiggly Wiggly, so who am I to disagree, but his statement that it now takes only15 minutes to get to Folly Beach seemsoptimistic. And i its so much easier toget to the island now, does that meanmore people will come?

Margie Horton thinks visitors wouldbehave i they were better inormed othe rules. She said sta at the HolidayInn did not know dogs were not allowedon the beach. No one knows the rules,Horton said. We need more signs statingthe rules. Maybe the people urinatingon her property behind the Sur Bar

would cease that behavior i there wasa sign indicating that it was a no-no.Maybe not. What did work or Hortonwas putting up food lights to catch theurinaters in the act. Now we cant haveFolly Beach all lit up like Las Vegas, somaybe we should hire a consultant togure this one out or us.

Council CommentsCharlie McCarty reminded us this was

Sae Boating Week and that there hadalready been more boating atalities thisyear than in all o 2009. I you wearyour lie preserver you are ar less likelyto be a victim o a boating accident, headmonished us. Duh!

Pennell Clamp announced that EltonCulpepper was his pick or PlanningCommissioner.

Laura Beck voiced her concern that theoil spill in the Gul o Mexico would

impact our beach and urged residents tohelp prevent that by going to saveourgulorg and making a contribution.

Paul Hume said we all have the samecomplaints and problems and he thoughtMayor Goodwin had made a real eortto get the word out that were not goingto take it anymore. Well be good hosts,Hume said, but well expect you tobe good guests. He said visitors wouldrise to the level o our expectations. Hesuggested taking a couple o extra trash

bags to the beach and saying, whenappropriate, things like Hey, do youneed a trash bag? Were really trying tokeep our beach clean. . . I all else ails,he said, take a picture o the violators inthe act. Now that Margie Horton hasturned on the foodlights, that should bea snap.

Follys rst loggerhead o the 2010season came ashore on May 21 in

the 8th block East. urtle WatchProgram volunteers assigned to thatsection o the beach helped relocate121 eggs to a spot higher in the dunes

where it is less likely that they will beinundated by high tides.

Te next evening, May 22, a rareleatherback laid 74 eggs that wererelocated to the County Park. Whena leatherback nested on Folly Beach in2003, it was only the third leatherbacknest ever recorded in SC. Tat nestproduced 67 viable hatchlings. In 2008the urtle Watch got a midnight cal l romFolly Beach Public Saety about a turtlenesting on the beach. o the surprise anddelight o the urtle eam, it turned out tobe a leatherback. Many members were ableto watch the rare turtle lay her eggs beorereturning wearily to the sea.

It is likely that the 2008 leatherback wasthe same turtle that had nested nine daysearlier on Kiawah, according to sources

rom the SC Department o NaturalResources. Since sea turtles return severaltimes in one season to nest on or near thebeach where they hatched, Folly Beachmay have another leatherback soon.

Te current turtle season is in ullswing and o to a great start, but yourhelp is needed to ensure a successul turtlenesting season.

Heres what you ca n do to help:

    1. PickuPyourlitter. I you bring it tothe beach, please take it home with you. Iyou are out walking, take a trash bag andpick up litter that others have thoughtlesslylet behind. Litter impedes the progress oturtles coming ashore to nest and is evenmore dangerous to fedgling turtles.

2.Fillinsandholes. Tey are dangerousor people as well as nesting turtles andhatchlings. Adult loggerheads cannot getout i they all into a large hole.

3.Bring in your Beach gear at the

endoFtheday. Items let out overnightcan pose a real problem or Loggerheadslooking or a place to nest. She mayabandon her search or a nesting site andreturn to the sea to release her eggs.

    4.turnoFFexteriorlights. Lights can

righten or disorient a turtle attemptingto nest, but they also disorient the tiny

hatchlings. Beore extensive coastaldevelopment, it was the moon shining onthe waves that led the hatchlings towardthe saety o the ocean. Houselights willdirect them away rom the ocean, wherethey can quickly die.

If you see a turtle nesting on the beach,DO NOT disturb her. Call Folly BeachPublic Safety and be prepared to let themknow the location so they can notify theTurtle Team. For more information on

nests, pictures, stories and other information,go to follyturtles.com.

We would rather give people a verbal

warning and a chance to comply but ithey didnt, we did give them a citation.

    Under-age drinking, though, thats

another story, he continued. Teres nowarning there.

According to Boatwright, o the159 citations issued over the three-day

weekend, hal were or open containerbut only one citation was handed out or

littering. Its not litter until they go andits let behind, the Chie said, which

makes it a hard ordinance to enorce. But, word had apparently gotten out because

    Boatwright got eedback rom ocers

and residents who overheard beachgoerstalking to each other about keeping the

beach clean and observing the rules.

No one powered up on anyone,

    Boatwright said, We want people tocome to the beach and enjoy themselves;

we just want them to ollow the rules.

    Steve Robinson, Deputy Director

o Public Works, said he knew he hadhis work cut out or him so he and his

sanitation crew mapped out a plan to

empty all public trash, which includesCenter Street and all the beach walkovers,

    on Saturday, Sunday and Mondaymorning.

We took care o the public, Robinsonsaid, adding that 20 cubic eet o trash,

weighing an estimated our tons, wascollected rom the walkovers alone on

Saturday and Sunday morning. Tatsa whole garbage truck ull o compacted

trash, he said, adding that a total o

approximately 30 tons o garbage wascollected rom all sources over the holiday

    weekend.

Im satisfed we did everything we

could, Robinson said. I concur with themayor who wants our visitors to be good

guests, but we have a responsibility to

provide the means to help them be goodguests.

Chie Boatwright said he plans other

    initiatives including drivers license

checkpoints. Were going to keep thepieces moving on the board and get a

handle on misconduct, he said. Whenpeople say lets go spend the weekend at

Folly Beach the alcohol is defnitely adraw, but they need to play by the rules.

Some olks say excessive and abusivenoise is something residents are expectedto endure as the price o living in paradise.Tose olks must not live within blastingrange o the Center Street drinkingestablishment or scrunched betweentwo rental houses regularly occupied byhordes o college kids who come to townto party down.

Folly Beach has a noise ordinance.Heres a novel idea: post the ordinancein bars and rental houses and, hey, heresanother novel idea: enorce the ordinance.

Ah, i only it were that easy.

Sunday night over Memorial Day weekend, I called the cops twice to the

rental unit next door where a three-dayparty was in ull swing. Nine cars thatdidnt move the entire weekend wereparked at rakish angles all over the yard.Te cars that came and went, cameand went day and night, spilling theirscreaming, swearing occupants acrossthe yard like marbles tumbling rom asack. My cat, a quiet, timid loner o acat who likes to hunt mice and lizardsin the wooded lot next to the rental, wasrightened by the continuous activity and

didnt come home or days. Some people complain that it takesPublic Saety too long to respond tocomplaints o excessive noise. Tat hasnot been my experience, and I do notthink that's the problem. I have calledthe cops on two previous occasions. Terst was a rowdy aair across the street

where resh meat was still arriving at 2:30in the morning Public Saety was there

later the party was shut down. Most othe partygoers were under-age and werequickly rounded up and transported

rom the premises. Te second time wasabout a raucous party next door wheremy neighbor had told me her twenty-something son would be having some

riends over or the weekend. It becamea joke between us rom that point on

whenever her son planned to stay thereor the weekend. Are you going to callthe police? she would ask. I will ithings get out o hand, I would respond. It didnt interere with our riendship andI never had to call the cops on her sonagain.

When I called last week, Public Saetycame right away. I called promptly ateleven oclock. Te noise ordinance says

it shall be unlawul or any person toengage in or commit any o the ol lowingacts: Make or utter any loud hollering, loud laughter, whistling, singing orshouting or other loud language or soundin such a manner that it creates a noisedisturbance between the hours o 11:00p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Some olks would wonder why I didn'tcut the revelers a little slack olks expectto party when they come to the beach -but I had already endured an entire dayo thumping rap lyrics, unintelligibleyelling and shrieking, heard all aboutthe ---ing this and the ---ing that, and now I was being subjected to whatsounded like a striptease act with takeit o, take it o, Mary accompaniedby loud clapping and hooting. All this inmy little corner o paradise.

ake your party inside, the nice

surprisingly, they did. I opened thewindows again and lay down to savor thebreeze blowing in rom the ocean andthe sound o waves crashing against theshore. Ah, paradise. It had been a longthree days.

Ten suddenly there it was again

the yelling, the shrieking, the cursing. Ilay in bed or some time pondering thesituation. Its not as bad a s it was. Surelyit will wind down soon. When I nallygot up to close the windows, I checkedthe time. It was 2:46 a.m. I didnt

want to close my windows and turnthe air-conditioning on. I wanted thosepeople next door to shut the --- up so Icould go back to sleep! I hesitated, andthen I picked up the telephone again.

Te same nice Public Saety ofcershowed up again, but this time he wasmore explicit. Last time I asked you totake it inside, he told them. Its threeoclock in the morning. Tis time Imtelling you to go inside. Its time to go tobed. He also told them boisterous noiseat that time o night was against the law.

Tere are specied consequences toviolating the noise ordinance, but thereis one small caveat that has thus armade the ordinance virtually impossibleto enorce. It doesnt ne the peoplemaking the noise, it nes the owner othe establishment or his agent. Until theCity can gure out how to hold bars andrental agencies accountable or excessiveand abusive noise, we who call this littleisland our home will have to close the

windows, get a prescription or sleepingpills, and invest in some good ear plugs.Or move. Paradise lost.

As one o the early settlers o LittleOak Island, I have had the pleasure

o watching it evolve over thepast seventeen years into a lovely, amilycommunity shared with an abundance onatures beauty and wildlie. However,my rst visit to this island paradise wasin the early seventies. My then ather-in-law had purchased a new 40+ oot huge,air-conditioned Airstream camper with allthe comorts o home-color V, spacioussleeping accommodations, kitchen, tuband shower. You get the picture. Whatdoes this have to do with anything, youask?

Besides having once been a dumpsite,so I am told, Little Oak Island was thenBlackeys Campground, an undevelopedisland perect or the true nature lover andexplorer. I never was a Girl Scout or a hard-core camper, but I did think o mysel asadventuresome. Te thought o spendinga weekend on this island near the sea wasso intriguing that my husband asked hisather i we could use the Airstream to takeriends rom Spartanburg camping. Weconvinced him, and sight unseen, he pul ledthe silver monster to the campground. Ater navigating the causeway on to theisland, there was merely a narrower sort oroad or path that encircled it. Te campsites were sparse clearings sporadically locatedaround the perimeter o the island whichbordered on a narrow tidal creek. Uponseeing the arduous job that lay ahead ohim, he responded with a resounding, Noway possible! Call me nave or optimistic, but I just knew he could do it and not

disappoint us.As i trying to back this huge camper

without going into the creek was notenough, I wanted it taken all the wayto the end o the island in order to havethe panoramic view o the Morris IslandLighthouse. My ather-in-law just wantedto leave and get his shiny new Airstreamback home without a scratch. Ater muchpleading and whining, he gave in andstruggled to back the camper inch byinch on the narrow, bumpy, dirt path in98 degree weather. Each time he said thisis ar enough, I would implore him to go just a little arther. I was determined to

get to the end o the island and look out atthe lighthouse; however, ater much time, sweat, and cursing, we would have to besatised with a view o the Folly River.Physically exhausted and having lost allpatience, he had gone as ar as he was willingto subject his brand new camper to therugged terrain. I wasnt going to push ourluck as I elt very privileged he had agreedto let us use it, and I didnt want him tochange his mind. It was quite an ordeal orhim to prepare our plush accommodations,or should I say set up camp, and it hadtaken up our aternoon plans or un andrelaxation. As the sun was now beginningto set, we had to assure him that we werevery capable o handling the situation andbid him arewell until Sunday aternoon.

He let unwillingly with numerousconcerns, mostly or the saety o hisAirstream, but not beore saying, It beatsme why you would want to stay in a luxury

camper with no electricity! I was crazyto let yall talk me into this asco! We

looked at each other in shock, but o courseresponded, We knew that. Sure wedidNO! It never occurred to us to askabout electrical hookups. I replied with apositive and upbeat attitude, Well enjoythe cool ocean breezes and the moonlight. We would rough it. Sure we would! Wecame to the startling realization that noneo our modern conveniences were going towork: the AC, hot running water or baths, the nice toilet acilities, and yes, the colorV and stereo system. We couldnt listento our cassettes or watch our VHS movies.

Now Im really dating mysel.Well, it was now time to put plan B into

action and relax by the water with a coolbeverage and tasty hors doeuvres. We hadplaned rozen daiquiris and pina coladas.Needless to say, the lack o electricity puta damper on that idea. Being the hardycampers we were pretending to be, we werent going to let such a minor detailspoil the moment. We set up our loungechairs (in the bushes) and were determinedto have Happy Hour in Paradise. Icarried out the tray o treats with tropicalnapkins I had weighted down to keep themrom blowing away. Tose cool oceanbreezes could get quite strong in the lateaternoon.

Wrong again! It was now dead low tidewith no water in the little creek in ront ous, mudats everywhere, no breeze, andthere would be no moonlight due to theheavy, dark clouds that had been buildingall aternoon In a matter o what seemed

backwards, said the Lords prayer, recitedthe 23rd Psalm, and repeated my mantra o

I can do this, I can do this, all the whiledriving my husband crazy anning myselwith a magazine. I think I nally dozed orom sheer exhaustion.

Nearing midnight we were jolted by loud crash o thunder and lightning. Mrst thought was that we were sitting duckinside this giant, metal, bullet-shapedcofn. We had to shut the windows tkeep the blowing rain out which onlyadded to my mental hysteria o closed-upspaces. We lay in hot silence trying noto be terried as the lightning lit up the

darkness. I knew our Spartanburg riendwere uneasy, to say the least, but were toopolite to say anything. Te romance andthe excitement o our paradise get-away hadnow become the trip rom Hell! We camto a quick consensus, and like cowardsthe city slickers quietly escaped durinthe stormy night to our air-conditionedbug-ree townhouse.

Ater sleeping late the next morningwe decided to go check on the camper andeat lunch at the beach. We had to at leasmake an appearance on Folly. Te merito spending that night in the Airstreamwere also dismal. So, we packed up all ouood and had a sumptuous repast o sur tur back home, ollowed by a night out onthe town. We went back to our campsiton Sunday to pack up our camping gearand arrive beore my ather-in-law camthat aternoon to begin the arduous job opreparing the camper or its return to thmainland We all pitched in and attribute

Like others beore it, Prince o Persia is another

orgettable video game adapted or the bigscreen, but there is one real dierence with

this one: it has legs. I can see a bright uture or thisPersian comedic adventure. It will make money and

has sequel ability. Like the game o its origin, this

movie is an excellent one to go see i youre lookingor mindless entertainment that is only slightly

better with the presence o Jake Gyllenhaal.

Walt Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer present thislm, directed by Mike Newell, and trust me; Disneywill not let you orget it. Te rst ve minutes o the

lm is literally a non-animated version o Aladdinand the rest o the story closely resembles Te Lion

King. Right when you think this lm is going to adarker, more interesting place, Disney swoops in and

brings it right back to fuy. Tis action-adventure

is set in the mystical lands o Persia. A rogue princenamed Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) reluctantly joins

orces with a mysterious princess amina (Gemma

Arterton), and together they must ght dark orcesto protect an ancient dagger that has the power toturn back time.

Tese types o light action adventure lms arehard because they are what they are: sub-par lms

that will entertain, wow with amazing stunts andacrobatics, and titillate your darker side by including

a mystical backdrop. Te Prince o Persia stands out

o the pack a bit due to the amazing perormance byGyllenhaal. He denitely out-shines the script and

pulls the perormance o by being a master o hiscrat and inusing his character with a genuine sense

o purpose and a wry sense o humor.

Another surprising presence in the lm was Ben

Kingsley who plays the reprehensible Uncle Nizam.

I always nd it strange when you see an actor o

that caliber in a lm such as this. It was o-putting.Every time I saw him on screen, I wondered whatthe Ben Kingsley was doing here.

Last but not least would be the entertainingperormance by Alred Molina, most recently

know or his amazing role in An Education. He plays a wily desert con man that has issues

with the man and he is truly unto watch. He brings a child-like eel

to his role and is truly talented in

    everything he does.

Prince o Persia has an incrediblebut strange cast o characters who makethe lm enjoyable at times. As ar as

summertime lms go, this ones right downthe middle; not too thought provoking, but

    adventurous and entertaining enough.

Meet James Justin Burke, a local Folly Beachmusician and songwriter. I sat down recently

or an interview with this burgeoning star andound that, while he appears to be a condent young mansure o his crat, deep down the kid inside him remainsgiddy with excitement and anticipation. It is this energythat drives his music. As the ront man or local rock bandJupiters Garden, Justin recently went solo with the bandJames Justin & Co., a group which presents a soulul rock-grass sound with hints o Americana and country. Everytime I have his new album playing someone asks aboutit; the sign o a truly good record. I highly recommendgetting one or yoursel, but be careul, it may never comeout o your CD player.

VP: Why did you make a solo album?JJB: Every show someone would talk to me about thisgreat connection they had to one o the songs I wrote, and I thought about how cool it would be to continuethese connections on an album. I never really thoughttwice about it, but it elt like I was meant to do it.

VP: Tell me about the new album.JJB: Southern Son, So Far is an album o love songs. It has nine tracks and song selection was a big decision.Tere are more songs that did not make it because they

just didnt t the eeling o this album. Every goodrecord tells a story and the songs I chose were about mywie and how she changed my lie. It already has been agigantic success.

VP: What experiences did you have with the albumcreation process?

JJB: I had nothing but extremely good experiences.

I was surprised at the love and support I receivedrom so many places. Jim Donnelly rom PlowgroundProductions produced the album and made the processeortless. I went in not knowing anything and cameout with something that I never knew would go thisar. It is very scary to give away your heart and soul, and Jim eased my mind and was condent that itwill rival anything out there. I could not have done itwithout him. Ten my riends and some o my heroesoered to be a part o the album. Ben Bridwell washappy to help and his respect was a huge git. Te guysin Dangermufn were there to support and HowardDlugash. Tey all helped me through it.

VP: Are you writing new music and touring now?JJB: Absolutely. In act, I could probably make ve

records. I am very active and a second album may bein the works very soon. My albums are all conceptsso I am searching or a sign that makes the second onecomplete. James Justin & Co. is planning a CharlestonCharity tour which has eight dates in late June / earlyJuly beneting Carolina Studios. Ten we are takingo to Wilmington, NC, then Floydest in Virginia andCamp Bareoot in West Virginia, touring Virginia andsinging the national anthem at the Richmond Bravesgame. Ten in the all we have a tour planned romBoston to Miami and over to New Orleans. We plan onbeing very busy.

VP: How do you feel about the Folly Beach musicscene?

JJB: Te sounds going on here are incredible. Peoplewho arent paying attention need to know that there arethree major bands making it out there on the road, allbased on Folly. Countless others are equally as goodand you can hear one nearly every night. Te amounto good bands you hear up and down Center Streetencourages each one to try harder and get better. It isall a product o where we live and where we come rom.Crossing the bridge and arriving on the island relieves

all my troubles and creates a huge sigh rom deep downwithin. I cant imagine my lie without Folly.

Buy the album at JamesJustinMusic.com. You can checkout James Justin & Co. on June 20 & July 3 at the Surf Bar June 24 on the Folly Pier, July 1 at Sunset Cay Marinaand July 2 at Folly Beach Brewing Co. If you are one of threligious readers of the Folly Current, you can see him tonightJune 11, at the Chill & Grill with Jupiters Garden.

As I write this its June rst, butby the time you read it the June8 primaries will be over (thank

you, Jesus). Its hot and humid with severeaternoon thundershowers. Hurricaneseason starts today. Note to anyone notrom here: leave when they tell you. Ivebeen through three (including Hugo).Leave. rust me.

One o my avorite memories o myteenage years (lo, those many decades

ago) is watching girls canter steeds downthe beach at sunset on Sullivans Island.Considering one can no longer even havean unleashed dog on the island becauseo the detritus, imagine the conniptionts the most expensive zip code in SouthCarolina would have today were theyto come across horse droppings. Tedowntown people would go ballistic.

Another avorite memory is loading upa Sunsh with a huge cooler, a beautiul

girl and a sti breeze. On weekends andholidays we would either go to Dewees orMorris islands and set up a huge grill with10 Boston Butts and kegs upon kegs. Teremight be a better way to live than soakingup the sun with girls in string bikinis withan ice cold beer and the immortality oyouth, but I couldnt tell you what it is.

(Tose girls are now grandmothers. Loveyou girls, but that string bikini thing justdoesnt work anymore. Sorr y.)

I think one major dierence betweenmy generation and the current one is that we made sure that whatever beach weinvaded, we cleaned up ater ourselves. In act, we generally let the places betterthan when we ound it.

I have never understood littering. Ipersonally think its a matter o breeding.

I believe that the mountain o trashthat rivaled the landll on Staten Islandoccurred last summer on Folly Beachbecause o a ew reasons: For one, ourpopulation has grown exponentially.Someone rom Akron or Athens mightthink that because Morris Island is ownedby the city o Charleston, theres regulartrash pick-up. In the past ew years, ourstandards o decency have deteriorated.Right and wrong have become relative

terms.Tere is also an increasing sense o

entitlement not only or the usual suspects, but also those in their 20s who have hadeverything handed to them to increasetheir sel-esteem. Im not condemning anentire generation, but I think we were heldto higher standards.

Ironically, in some ways, we werecrazier. Many things like the 18-year olddrinking age and open containers werelegal. Te pill had taken care o thosepesky pregnancies, and HIV was notconceived. As Lou Reed said, Tose weredierent times.

Tus, I am not unsympathetic to thosegoing out to an island, drinking heavily, eating a bunch o meat and swimmingwith a scantily-clad girlriend. As a matter

o act, it sounds great to me. Te thing is,I and everyone else would bring trash bagsand each boat - be it a Sunsh or a Whaler- would have an extra passenger withthem on their way home. An interestingpoint would be that these soirees wouldbe meticulously planned and pretty mucheveryone would have assigned duties. Teparties were pretty much private becausewe were the only ones there and there weremaybe 40 o us. Tere was no one here 30

years ago. You have to remember that we had

transistor radios which picked up WAPEin Jacksonville blasting Sly and the FamilyStone, not iPods. Any oncoming weatherwas elt and seen rather than having yourBlackberry ring to warn you.

I remember having to sail across

Charleston Harbor in a fotilla pilotinga Sunsh amid all manner o small crafeeing Morris Island. We looked likDunkirk. Tere was punishing windand rain, our-oot seas and lightningcrackling with the surety and switneso justice. Tere was a waterspout on thdeserted waters by Daniel Island. We hadno choice. We were completely exposedand we rushed to Sullivans Island oour very lives amid cursing and men-boy

squealing like little girls. God takes care odrunks and ools

Heres the thing. As we watched thstorm coming, the rst thing we did wastow everything away. Tat included thtrash: words to live by. Tat said, were inor a hell o a ride in the coming monthsGo to the beach, enjoy the sun, the peopleand each other. Feel the salt o the oceancatch that wave, lose yoursel in thmoment, and grow irritated about th

sand in your underwear.Get going. Tere are memories to b

made. Just pick up the darn trash.

    I

ts a great time to be shing here inCharleston. Te usual suspects - redsh

and trout - are now complimented by ahost o seasonal species including SpanishMackerel, ladysh and sharks. Combined with warmer temperatures, the shingconditions are now excellent.

We have been catching a good numbero redsh over the last month includingsome o the biggest seen this year. Redshwill take articial plastic lures mimickingsmall bait sh and have been keyingin on darker colors. Recently, the mostsuccessul lures are either black with gold

akes or blue. Im still shing almost allmy articia ls on utter hooks because they

give the lure such good action. As always, keep changing colors until you nd onethat works.

Flyshing or reds has been best atlow tide when sight shing conditions areoptimal. Fly patterns with lots o ash are working well, especially in the colors ocopper or green. I also like ies with weedguards as plant lie in the water increases.During the big high tides in the evening wehave been able to get up into the grass andcast to tailing redsh. Te Dupres Spoon

Fly is just the ticket or that setting.

Over the last two weeks the troutbite has really improved. Weve startedcatching a decent number o mid-sizetrout whereas beore we were only ndinga ew big trout that were ready to breed.Fishing mud minnows on jigheads can bequite efective and lets you get your bait inront o trout in deeper pockets. I use 1/8oz. jigheads. You can use bigger jigheads, but make sure their size is not signicantlybigger than the bait.

Spanish Mackerel are plentiul andcan be ound best at rst light. I you ndschools o sh busting bait on the surace, throw reective casting jigs and reel themquickly through the school. Alternatively,i you know sh are present but not up

top, try trolling Clark Spoons at diferendepths and diferent speeds. Bonnetheadsharks are abundant as well and wilreadily take bait shed on the bottomespecially cracked blue crab.

    See you on the water!
