Let me con ess right o that I have yet to try eating oysters. Te thought intimidates me and, consequently, I never cared much about them. Tey were just something else rom the sea. However, a terresearching the signi cance o oysters in our ecosystem, Ican honestly say I have a growing ondness or these slimy mollusks. Im also concerned about their survival.

    T he S ignificance of o ySTerS in The e coSySTem :

Oysters are invertebratemarine creatures that attachto existing oyster shells duringtheir biological development. It takes approximately two weeks be ore oyster larvaebegin attaching to shells, and a year be ore they reachadulthood. Te collective shells orm oyster ree s onthe shores o estuaries and tidal creeks, and these ree sare currently in danger. Runo rom agriculture anddevelopment can cause a buildup o ecal coli orm and which eventually contaminates the oysters. Changing water patterns rom local boat tra c or dams upstreamcan shi t the South Carolina oysters native intertidal zoneand erode marsh altogether. Tis isnt just a local problem.85% o the worlds oyster ree s have been destroyed dueto development, disease, and/or overharvesting.

It doesnt have to be all doom and gloom, however. In act, South Carolina oysters are privileged in many respects. Tey seem to have some limited immunity tothe disease that devastated the Chesapeake Bay oystersupply, and as citizens, we can control overharvesting anddevelopment practices. Oysters are a valuable renewableresource. Tey are integral to the Lowcountry environmentand are in high demand by locals and visitors alike.

Besides the act that they make a great winter meal, the ecological role o the oyster is incredibly important.Tey are a cornerstone species. A single oyster can ltermore than a gallon o water per hour and by doing sothey are not only constantly improving the quality o the water, they are depositing nutrients that are vital toother marine li e. Tey are a ood source to some and

a habitat to others. At least40 species o sh are directly associated with oyster beds, and predators are drawn tothe beds as hunting grounds.Tey also protect againstthe erosion o our beauti ulmarsh land. Ree s block the

energy trans erred rom boats and allow or the build-upo sediment.

T he h iSTory of S ouTh c arolina S o ySTerS : Oystersalso have a historic cultural and economic signi canceto South Carolina. Because oysters are readily availableon the coast, they have been requently used or a variety o purposes throughout time. Te tip o the Charlestonpeninsula was origina lly called Oyster Point by colonistsdue to the multitude o oysters. Based on the discovery o large deposits o used oyster shells, it is evident thatthey have been a part o the Lowcountry diet since Native Americans walked the sea islands. Oysters have been(and o ten still are) used in a primitive concrete mixtureto construct buildings. Oyster shell lime was used as

ertilizer on Lowcountry plantations and the groundshells are o ten added to chicken eed.

Public and private oyster roasts have been a community tradition since the early 19th century. Despite being adelicacy, oysters were shared by all classes o society. In

the past, oysters were o ten a vital ood subsidy or loweincome amilies. Even today, anyone with a boat can pick oysters rom open, public beds.

At its peak, the commercial oyster industry in SouthCarolina produced globally-recognized brands. Duringits heyday, it was a vital source o jobs or the state. Teindustry in act had an over-reliance on labor. Pickingoysters by hand is tedious and dependent on the tide.Be ore motorboats, groups o men would usually spendseveral days on the water be ore returning to the cannery with the harvest. Because oyster picking is so labor-intensive, production numbers declined sharply during

the World Wars. Te industry barely survived be ore beingsubjected to an improved, and diversi ying, economy which provided more desirable jobs with higher pay andbetter bene ts. Labor laws and wel are also decreasedthe pro t margin driving industry while Korean oysters, picked with cheaper labor, fooded the market.

Producers needed to adapt. Tey needed to create acapital-intensive industry to thrive in the new economy. In the 1970s, Clemson University developed an oyster-harvesting machine to wean the industry o o its laborreliance, but the equipment was regarded as too expensiveand the industry ultimately ailed. One by one, SouthCarolina canneries closed down.

When canneries were operating, used shells wouldaccumulate in one place to be recycled. I they were notrecycled, the beds would decline dramatically. Oystersattach and grow on older oyster shells in their larvae orm

(spat). I previously harvested shells are not placed inthe intertidal zone, the oyster spat will have a di culttime nding a proper home, and theyre likely to die out.Oyster ree s have been declining since the close o thecanneries in the 1970s.

P roTecTing o ur o ySTerS : Te S.C. Department o Natural Resources (DNR) reports that up to hal o alloysters sold today end up in restaurants. Although just asreliant on a continuing supply o oysters, restaurants are

Twas a brave person indeed, who frst ate an oyster. ~ Mark wain

Folly Beach Moves Sea and Festival Back To April 16 FOLLY BEACH, SC---Folly Beach City Councilmembers unanimously voted uesday to move the Seaand Sand Festival back to April 16. Tey cited many reasons or the move, including the lack o any rain at allon the 16th in spite o weather orecasts, which are never wrong. It remains unclear just how the estival move willtake place, though the word Delorean could be heardamongst the whispers in City Hall. Te controversialBrazilian Wax booth will still o er its services during theannual celebration on Center St.

any ecologically-minded individual wil l avoid mass-producedboards made overseas in countries such as China, Tailand, and Slovakia. Tese countries have lax environmentalregulations and make better ood than sur boards.

Originally, wooden sur boards were the pre erred way tosur . We can call this the good old days, and environmentalimpact was minimal. As polyurethane oam became readilyavailable, wooden boards disappeared. In recent years, shapers such as om Wegener started shaping a number o

nless wooden sur boards known as alaias that are basedon Hawaiian designs rom antiquity. Pawlonia wood is o tenused, and this construction produces a board with a very small environmental ootprint. Teir nless design allowsmultiple spins to be per ormed. o see Folly Beach sur ersusing a laias, visit ww w.thomasbrothersblog.com.

Materials that were used in the rst part o this century to construct sur boards include redwood and balsa. Tesematerials are also being given a second look. However, thishas produced a small resurgence at best. Perhaps this isbecause these boards are heavier and much more expensivethan synthetic boards.

I ecologically riendly boards are now available, we shouask what else is necessary to ride a wave. All sur ers use wax some type to remain atop their boards. raditional sur waxis parafn-based. Tis material is a byproduct o petroleumdistillation. Earth- riendly alternatives exist, such as beeswaxand soy wax. Beeswax is ound in nature, but is moreexpensive and difcult to nd. Many sur wax companiesalso produce a soy-based product that environmentally-conscious sur ers may choose.

When the water is cold, sur ers wear neoprene wetsuits. Most neoprene is derived rom petroleum. However, agreener alternative known as limestone neoprene exists. While several companies produce wetsuits made rom thismaterial, Patagonia goes one step urther, using wool liningand recycled materials. Tis produces a top-notch wetsuit without compromise.

Looking back, the sur industry had created three syntheticproducts essential to sur ng that are toxic or otherwiseecologically un-loveable. Tis industry has now provided atleast one environmentally conscious product or sur boards wax, and wetsuits. We now have some choices to make, my

    riends. ake it easy.

at least a level removed in the productionprocess compared to canneries. Te costo transporting shell to recycling centersis le t to the restaurants or the privatecitizens that purchase oysters. Oystershells can be ound in many places butnot o ten where they should be: in thecreeks, building new beds. DNR predictsthat approximately 150,000 bushelso shell are harvested annually whileonly 70,000 bushels are replanted. Tisis mathematically unsustainable, andsomething needs to be done to changethe status quo. DNR is on a tight budgetand does not have the personnel to work on oyster restoration everywhere in thestate. As a result, there is a large relianceon civic volunteerism.

What can we do as citizens? TeSouth Carolina Oyster Restoration andEnhancement (SCORE; http://score.dnr.sc.gov/) program is constantly takingvolunteers to help build oyster ree s,to monitor their health and quality,to educate, and to recycle shell. I havepersonally participated in the building o an oyster bed. During my visit, volunteers

ormed a chain-gang to load bags o shellonto a boat, drop the bags in the intertidalzone at high tide, and arrange them atlow tide. Tis experience was a eel-goodexercise that I would de nitely repeat.

Oysters deserve a brighter spotlighton the public stage. Te states current, limited, arrangements or the preservationand restoration o oysters are not set instone. Any new legislation must answer,Who does this change bene t? Is it air?Does it protect existing resources? Doesit unduly burden any group? Tis neednot come with tax increases. For example,SCORE has suggested that tax creditscan be distributed or shell donations.Broad education is also important. I South Carolinas citizens new andold recognize the ecological, cultural, economic, and historical importance o oysters, they will rise to the challenge.

So the next time you have an oyster, think about the ate o its shell and how you can help preserve our local oysterbeds through recycling. I youre at arestaurant, ask them what they do withthe shell. Even asking shows there is

interest! In the meantime, perhaps Illsummon up the courage to try one.
