    volcano in Iceland erupted, delaying

international flights for weeks, a 6.9

    magnitude earthquake shook China causing

thousands of deaths and injuries, and the BP-leasedDeepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion spilled205.8 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of

Mexico and that was just April of last year.

2010, the first year of a new decade, bega n in theshadow of one of the worst economie s since 1929 and

ended with hopeful yet wary eyes turning toward thenew year. Despite wild politics, crazy weather and

more natural disasters than anyone can rememberin recent years, 2010 did give us the glimmer of

an economic turn around with solid sales reportedduring the holiday season, and unemployment claims

dropping steadi ly as of October from 459,000 claims

per week to just 388,000 at the end of December.

Here in South Carolina, our otherwise quiet little

state has been popping up more and more in thenews; and not always for the best reasons. From

Alvin Greene, an unemployed Army veteran, beingelected as the Democratic nominee for the Senate, to

Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauers faux pas when

he compared free lunches at schools to feeding strayanimals, South Carolina has been on the receiving

end of quite a few national jokes. On the positiveside, however, we did elect our very first female

governor into office, and Charleston was named notonly the most friendly, but most attractive city in

the United States by Travel + Leisure magazine.

Its been quite a ride this year, and while many

are happy to see this awkward era final ly slip behindus, its important to remember that 2010 also rent

a small tear in the curtain of the recession, and

allowed in the first rays of hope for better years tocome. Happy 2011!

Te Folly Current reported on Dec. 17 that outgoing Public Saety Director erryBoatwright was a Vietnam veteran. Boatwright is a Vietnam-era veteran whohonorably served overseas, but did not serve in combat in Vietnam. We regret theerror.

In our recap o the Oct. 26 City Council meeting, the Folly Current reportedthat resident Cynthia Wiles spoke or ten minutes. She spoke or three minutes, beore allowing neighbor Roberta Karnosky to nish her statement. Te Currentreported that Karnosky was upset at the over-aggresive pruning o her g treethat, to be ai r, is in the right o way. Karnosky did not mention her g tree at anyCouncil meeting. She did say her property was also damaged on the same day as the

Wiles. Te right o way easement reerred to i s or ingress and egress only, alongwith a 10-oot utility access. We regret the discrepancies.

Yu L!Coming out o an hour-long executivesession to discuss employment andcompensation, Elizabeth Beckmann(wie o ormer Mayor Carl Beckmann)began the public meeting with a personal

appearance meant to clear up hurtulrumors and air grievances. Beckmann,

who ounded the Christmas DecorationCommittee, was upset over rumors thatshe planned to charge the City to putup decorations in 2010. Mayor imGoodwin, ater hearing this rom City

Administrator oni Connor-Rooks, chosethis year to recruit volunteers to put up thedecorations.

Beckmann pointed out that in July 2009she turned over $13,322 in committeeunds to the City, and commented thather and her volunteers services wereinvaluable. Mr. Mayor, you wrecked allthe good work done by those volunteers,

said Beckmann, adding that she wouldhave been happy to put up the decorationsree o charge i Mayor Goodwin hadonly called to ask. Its apparent theMayor operates on rumors, she said. TeMayors actions and behavior have causedgreat anxiety in my amily, my business, and me personally. Yes, you won theelection. Now get over it.

    She concluded by quoting Congressman

Joe Wilsons inamous, You lie, quip, beore genuinely choking up and sayingshe elt alienated. All you have to do isask, she said to the Mayor.

Goodwin deended himsel and saidhed understood Beckmann to require

a substantial ee or putting up thedecorations, and decided to recruitvolunteers. Yes, I won. Im over it.I appreciate your comments, saidGoodwin.

s d sd D sOrganizer Ben Bounds sought and gotunanimous approval to schedule the2011 Sea and Sand Festival or Saturday,

April 16. Former council candidate SusanBreslin then commented that last year, citizens were urious about the horribletrac on the day o Sea and Sand, andsuggested it be moved to March in 2012.Councilman D.J. Rich responded that

Huron Street would be open this year, alleviating some congestion.

Ply D h W sdSeveral citizens, mostly members o theParks and Recreation Committee, spokein avor o the new playground at 5th St.and West Cooper. Board member CandiceMartin spoke with her son John by herside, accusing two new council members

o stalling the vote on the playground andrequiring the committee to spend the lasteight days reinventing the wheel. Martinand the board collected 300 signatures, including 50 rom the west side, in avoro the playground. Her son then said he

wanted a new playground because the onlything he liked at the old playground wasthe tire swing.

Joe Wilson (the Current is not awareo any relation to the aorementionedcongressman), who owns a lot adjacent tothe playground, said that he believes theplayground will raise his property value, comparing the relationship to property inMt. Pleasants Ion neighborhood.

Councilman D.J. Rich, who hadpreviously voiced skepticism about theplayground, said hed done a walkingsurvey o neighbors about it. CouncilmanCharlie McCarty called it one o themost dicult decisions hes had to make,

oering a history lesson o the spot beorelisting his grandchildren by name as thegreatest infuence that pushed him towardapproval. Council members PennellClamp and Eddie Ellis voted against theplayground, which passed 5-2.

Prug G M DwCynthia Wiles o 314 Shadow Race Lanespoke to reiterate rustrations aboutpruning and cutting o trees on herproperty. She claimed her comments atthe last meeting were incorrectly recordedin the minutes. I clearly stated that myconcerns were with the work done byCharleston County Public Works, said

Wiles, claiming that workers trespassedon her property and signicantlyaltered the native vegetation, as ar as33 eet rom the street on her privateproperty. Wiles showed photographso the damage and said she wanted hertrees replanted. Councilman D.J. Richconceded that some o the damage done

was not in the right-o-way, but saidplenty o oers had been made to Wilesto alleviate the problem and she had notresponded. Mayor Goodwin said thaturther discussion should be through anattorney. Wiles said she had not retainedan attorney. Goodwin stood his groundthat an attorney had contacted the cityregarding the issue.

Hu crrCouncilman Eddie Ellis was the onlydissenting vote against an ordinance as therst supplement to the 2010-2011 budget.

    skr tlk

Councilman D.J. Rich proposed thatthe City approve the purchase o 2,500specialty stickers at a cost o $751 that

would ax the Citys 8.5x11 printedrules or renters to the rerigerators orental properties. An ex isting resolutionrequires homeowners to post the rulessomewhere, and the new resolution wouldcreate a streamlined process and location.Council unanimously approved thepurchase ater discussion about how bestto und similar purchases in the uture.

Rgh f WyCouncil unanimously approved thegranting o 50-oot non-exclusive utility

easements to SCE&G and A&, as wellas approving the agreement between theS.C. Department o ransportation andthe City regarding the construction o thetwo new bridges to the beach.

Mr tlkgCouncilmember McCarty revisited theplayground debate, saying he hoped thecommunity would enorce regulationsthere and promote sovereign peace andquiet. Wind him up, joked CouncilmanClamp when he began to trail o.Councilmember Ellis encouraged MayorGoodwin to extend an olive branch tothe Beckmann amily. I think yourekind o rubbing his nose in it, said Ellis.Councilman Clamp asked ElizabethBeckmann i shed extend an olive branchin return i the Mayor did so, to which sheresponded, No comment.

Clamp deended his vote against hispark as not a vote against children. Im alittle peoples person. I love little people. Ivoted against it tonight or other reasons, said Clamp. It passed, and Im going tobe behind it one hundred plus percent. He then wished everybody MerryChristmas, and claried that he did notsay Happy holidays. Mayor Goodwinclosed the meeting by thanking thevolunteers who put up the decorations.

Already in two issues o working on the Folly Current,Ive been amazed at both the hard work and kind-naturedattitude put orth rom our citys sta, volunteers, and publicservants. Covering council and planning meetings is certainlymore entertaining than I expected (and Id love help, i youreinterested), as well as reading through the police reports or theblotter.

Whether its writing up a heated argument in council, anunortunate crime, or a eel-good neighbor eature, my hope isthat the Folly Current will promote transparency and objectivityas a media source. Tis is a community paper. Its yours. FollyBeachs citizens dont agree on everything, and the Currentreects that. But, hopeully, voicing our concerns and opinionsin this public orum will help us to understand each other.

We need a paper like the Current in the community. I hopeyoull support the paper by reading it, contributing to it, andsponsoring it with advertising.

he sesquicentennial o the Civil War is nowunderway, with Dec. 20, 2010, marking 150 yearssince South Carolina signed the Ordinance o

Secession. Folly Beach played a critical role throughouta war whose rst shots rang out only a mile away.Historian Paul Hedden leads tours o war sites around James Island, and oers us this ongoing look at theevents occurring 150 years ago. Tese correspondencesare taken rom ocial transcripts and telegrams duringthe confict:

December 20, 1860. Ordinance of secession adoptedby the South Carolina Convention.

December 26, 1860. United States troops, undercommand of Maj. R. Anderson, transferred fromFort Moultrie to Fort Sumter.

I have the honor to report that I have just completed, by theblessing o God, the removal to this ort o all o my garrison, except the surgeon, our non-commissioned ocers, andseven men. We have one years supply o hospital stores andabout our months supply o provisions or my command. Ilet orders to have all the guns at Fort Moultrie spiked, andthe carriages o the 32-pounders, which are old, destroyed.I have sent orders to Captain Foster, who remains at FortMoultrie, to destroy all the ammunition which he cannotsend over. Te step which I have taken was, in my opinion, necessary to prevent the eusion o blood. Respectully, yourobedient servant, ROBER ANDERSON, Major, FirstArtillery, Commanding.

December 27, 1860. Castle Pinckney and FortMoultrie seized by the State troops.

ELEGRAM: o Major ANDERSON, Fort Moultrie:Intelligence has reached here this morning that you haveabandoned Fort Moultrie, spiked your guns, burned thecarriages, and gone to Fort Sumter. It is not believed, because there is no order or any such movement. Explainthe meaning o this report. J. B. FLOYD, Secretary oWar.

ELEGRAM: o the Hon. J. B. FLOYD, Secretary oWar: Te telegram is correct. I abandoned Fort Moultriebecause I was certain that i attacked my men must havebeen sacriced, and the command o the harbor lost. I spiked

the guns and destroyed the carriages to keep the guns rombeing used against us. I attacked, the garrison would neverhave surrendered without a ght. ROBER ANDERSON,

    Major, First Artillery, Commanding.

ELEGRAM: o Col. S. Cooper, Adjutant-General,rom Fort Sumter: I could not hesitate that it was mysolemn duty to move my command rom a ort which wecould not probably have held longer than orty-eight orsixty hours, to this one, where my power o resistance isincreased to a very great degree Tis ate rnoon an armedsteamer, one o two which have been watching these twoorts, between which they have been passing to and ro oranchored or the last ten nights, took possession by escaladeo Castle Pinckney ... Tey also took possession tonight oFort Moultrie, rom which I withdrew the remainder omy men this aternoon We are engaged here today inmounting guns and in closing up some o the openings orthe embrasures temporarily closed by light boards, butwhich would oer but slight resistance to persons seekingentrance. ROBER ANDERSON, Major, First Artillery,Commanding.

Dec. 28-30, 1860. Seizure of the Charleston Arsenalby S.C. militia.

I am constrained to comply with your demand or thesurrender o this arsenal, rom the act that I have noorce or its deense. I do so, however, solemnly protestingagainst the illegality o thismeasure in the name o myGovernment. I also demand,as a right, that I be allowedto salute my fag, beore

lowering it, with one gun oreach State now in the Union(32), and that my commandbe allowed to occupy thequarters assigned them untilinstructions can be obtained rom the War Department.Very respectully, F. C.HUMPHREYS, MilitaryStorekeeper Ordnance.

January 9, 1861. Citadel Cadets Prevent Resupply ofFort Sumter.

A report rom Union commanding ocer Charles

Woods: Te Star o the West. embarked on the evening oSaturday, Jan. 5 the command consisted o 200 men..On Jan. 8 arms and ammunition were issued t o all the men.Te same evening we arrived o Charleston Harbor. Assoon as we had light enough we crossed the bar, and steamedup the main ship channel. We were opened on by a maskedbattery near the north end o Morris Island. Beore we werered upon we had discovered a red palmetto fag fying, but could see nothing to indicate that there was a batterythere. We kept on, still under the re o the battery, mosto the balls passing over us, one just missing the machinery, another striking but a ew eet rom the rudder . TeAmerican fag was fying at Fort Sumter . Finding itimpossible to take my command to Fort Sumter, I wasobliged most reluctantly to turn about, and try to make myway out o the harbor beore my retreat should be cut o

. A brisk re was kept up on us by the battery as long aswe remained within range, but ortunately, we succeededin recrossing the bar in saety. During the whole tripdownward the troops were kept out o sight whenever avessel came near enough to us to distinguish them, and themorning we entered the harbor o Charleston they weresent down beore daylight, and kept there until ater we got out o the harbor again. From the preparations thathad been made or us I have every reason to believe theCharlestonians were perectly aware o our coming. CHAS.R. WOODS, First Lieutenant, Commanding.

    Whats thislittle box thingy?

    Y

ouve probably seen these little boxes popping up all over the place. Not only onposters or tickets which you purchased over the internet, but next to nutritionlabels and on the backs of just about every popular product on the market.

Its a mobile barcode, or QR Code, and its purpose is to integrate tangible items withthe internet. By using your smart phone, you can take a picture - or scan - the barcodeand your phone will take your straight to the website which the barcode represents. Forexample, if you go to Bing or Google on your iPhone and tap camera, you can take apicture of the barcode pictured below and your browser will take you immediately tothe Folly Current website. Check it out! (below left)

Well be integrating these barcodes into our future publications on a more regularbasis, so if there is a program, event, company or website in which youre interested, allyou need to do is snap a picture and youre there. For more information about mobilebarcodes, go to mobile-barcodes.com or scan the following barcode. (below right)
