It’s worth walking to the Strangford Stone, Ireland’s tallest megalith, a community project celebrating the millennium. Action Outdoors is based in the park, and offers more than 20 activities, from abseiling to zip lines. The centre has a year-round programme of taster sessions. Castle Ward & Clearsky Adventure Centre Visit the National Trust’s unconventional stately home in a stunning walled estate. Clearsky is based within the grounds, and offers a huge range of activities, including archery, rock climbing, sea kayaking and mountain biking. Downpatrick & County Down Railway & Inch Abbey Step aboard Northern Ireland’s only full-size heritage railway, to steam through drumlin countryside, past the cathedral and alongside the River Quoile’s banks. Your destination is Inch Abbey, the fine remains of a 12th century Cistercian abbey. The railway itself has lots going on for big and little train enthusiasts. The reward for your journey is a stroll around the photogenic ruins at Inch. Christian Heritage… Down Cathedral, Saint Patrick’s Grave & e Saint Patrick Centre You can walk between these Downpatrick attractions, and take in the story of Saint Patrick. Step back to the ancient, megalithic monument at Ballynoe, where a 100-feet stone circle encloses a burial mound. The site dates to around 2000BC. Saul Church & Slieve Patrick Ireland’s first Christian church was at Saul, established by Saint Patrick in a local chieftain’s barn. Most likely, Saint Patrick also died here, having written his famous Confession. The present church was built on the site of Patrick’s barn, and evidence remains of the early church in the graveyard. A huge statue of the saint greets you at the summit of Slieve Patrick. From here, you have beautiful, panoramic views over Lecale. The statue commemorates the 1500th anniversary of Patrick’s return to Ireland, and overlooks the spot where his boat landed. Donaghadee, Ballycopeland Windmill & Drumawhey Miniature Railway Donaghadee was once Northern Ireland’s main seafaring port – its lighthouse is a local icon. Portaferry, Windmill Hill & Strangford Lough Ferry Portaferry marks the southern end of the Ards peninsula. Drumawhey Junction Miniature Railway is just outside Donaghadee, the perfect spot for kids to let off steam. They’ll love exploring the station, signal cabin, coach sheds and tunnels. Contact the Railway for opening hours, as times do vary.

Mount Stewart & Greyabbey

The National Trust’s Mount Stewart is famous for its neo-classical house and beautiful gardens. You’ll see an inspiring range of plants from around the world – something beautiful for every season. Mount Stewart is the Londonderry family’s ancestral home, and the National Trust run events here throughout the year.

Greyabbey village overflows with history and legend. Its lively antique trade and independent shops are well worth browsing. Take a picnic and wander among the stunning remains of Grey Abbey itself, a fine Cistercian church set in beautiful parkland near the village.

Portaferry, Windmill Hill & Strangford Lough Ferry

Portaferry marks the southern end of the Ards peninsula. There are two equally scenic routes here – drive along the Irish Sea coast or follow the inner curve of Strangford Lough. The town overlooks a channel of water known as The Narrows. This is the mouth of the lough – beautiful views over the water reveal the sheer force of local tides. Don’t miss Exploris – the Northern Ireland Aquarium and Seal Sanctuary, where the family can learn more about marine life in the lough and Irish Sea.

Visit Windmill Hill on the edge of town for a fabulous vantage point over the lough. You might even spot Castle Ward – another National Trust property set among trees on the opposite bank. Scan the water for SeaGen – this water turbine harnesses the tidal power of the lough.

Feel the wind in your hair on the Strangford Lough ferry, crossing between Portaferry and Strangford. Watch out for local wildlife, including jellyfish and seals. Travel on foot, or bring your car and drive from Strangford through Saint Patrick’s Country in Downpatrick.
