Dubbo Wether Challenge
Years 9 and 10 Agriculture students travelled to Dubbo on Tuesday, March 5 to pick up seven Egelabra-bred Merino wethers. Students participated in a day-long education course covering sheep nutrition and production, breeding and selection, greasy wool assessment, industry overview and career pathways within the wool industry.
These animals will form the basis of a 6 month animal trial where students will monitor their weight and wool growth. Students will handle and prepare the animals to compete at the Dubbo School Wether Challenge on August 27 and 28. The animals will be judged on their production, wool and meat values. Keep an eye out for updates throughout the year. We are hoping that our magical feed formula will allow our sheep to out perform YCS 2018 merino wethers which averaged 57kg at the end of the competition.

A message from the Principal
At Yeoval Central School we inspire all to be responsible, respectful learners. Working together to achieve and grow.
Congratulations on the success of last week: Jackson was successful in receiving a scholarship of $1000 for his studies. Angus, Michael, Colt and Chase who completed Work Placement in Dubbo. Our Agricultural Team who began the Wether Challenge taking ownership of 7 wethers to fatten up
by August. Our FYI class who made everyone’s day with their ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ Day. Our preschool
and UPA residents were delighted to have visits and our staff and other students were treated to random events to brighten their day.
All of these activities would not be possible without the time they have spent above and beyond, and the organisation skills of our staff. I thank Mrs Stanford, Mr Grubb, Miss Border, Mrs Doyle (Peak Hill CS) and Mr Jones, Ms Freeth and Mr Sanders who organised and spent their evenings supervising Work Placement. Mr Horley supported Jackson in his application and led the Agricultural team. Ms Loud and Mrs Blatch led their Years 7 and 8 class in the FYI project. Last week I decided to keep the bus bay gates locked until the teacher on duty sees you to collect your child. This was to keep your child safe and ensure they were leaving with the person who has permission to take them. Keeping in mind most teachers are on class until 3pm, it may take them a couple of minutes to get to the gate. I believe this short time frame far outweighs the risks associated with students leaving unsupervised. If you have any concerns, please contact me directly or come along to the P&C meeting to support your school. It is at 6pm tonight in the Learning Centre. Mrs Nicole Bliss Principal

Creative Curriculum - Junior Judging Workshop
Students in Mr Horley's Creative Curriculum unit based on showing and judging of animal and agricultural products, were put on the spot to participate in a Junior Judging activity: judging fruit. Students were provided with two judging tables. Table one contained 4 different groups of apples. Table two contained 5 different groups of citrus fruits- grapefruit, oranges, mandarins, limes and lemons. Observational skills were paramount in judging the two different tables. Students needed to make judgements based on uniformity in size, shape and colour as well as the visual quality and appeal of the fruit, free from blemishes, transport marks, sunspots/sunburn and any evidence of pests or disease. Students provided an explanation to the class about the placement of the exhibits on both tables based on their judgement criteria. When the activity was completed, students sampled the fruits that they had judged. The grapefruits, lemons and limes were a hit with the class. Mr Ken Horley

FYI - Random Acts of Kindness
Project One Hook.
Our team of Year 7 and Year 8 students worked together to create a ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ day involving our school and wider community. Students explored the concept of kindness. Sharing simple acts to celebrate the simplicity and the great act of genuine kindness to others, hopefully making them smile and feeling valued.
Students communicated through emails and meetings with key people to organise the day. Mrs Bliss our Principal, Miss Jenny Burke the Preschool Director and Mrs Brooke Cusack the UPA Recreation Officer were integral in our day’s events.
Students enjoyed playing games and making cards for the UPA residents and at the Preschool with the preschool children. Students also enjoyed having a friendly chat with UPA residents over a cuppa, finishing off with a competitive game of indoor bowls. A special Teddy Bear’s Picnic with K/1/2 students at lunch was very relaxing with special, furry treasures. Some special messages were also circulated on the day.
Other random acts involving students were free hugs and special messages.
It was a great day. The FYI Team
