From the Principal’s Desk…………... Welcome to Term 1 Week 3 at Kilmore Primary School. First of all, a huge thankyou to everyone who attended the family picnic night last Thursday. It was a huge success and we have had great feedback about the STOMP workshops and performances. I would like to thank Tina and Tracey from the Garden and Grounds Beautification group for their work in preparing the school grounds for the evening and the start of the year. Parent Information Night I look forward to meeting with all of our families at the information evening next Wednesday 21st February . The evening is about helping us develop a clear and transparent idea of what the school year will be like, how we can work together to get the best outcomes for our children and what the school priorities and focus for ongoing improvement will be. You will have the opportunity to go into classes and look at the environment your child is working in and meet their teacher. We will start together in the stadium at 7.00pm. Classroom Helpers Program Our school literacy and numeracy programs commenced in earnest next week after the Ready Set

Go program. To get the most out of these learning sessions we rely heavily on the support of

volunteer classroom helpers. Having more adults in the room ensures children are on task and

getting access to assistance while the teacher focuses on small group and individual needs. If you

would like to help in the classrooms, we would LOVE to have you! In order to do this, you need to

have completed a training session with me and have a current Working with Children Check. If

you have already done this please see your class teachers to negotiate the times you can help. If

you have not done the training please select one of the following sessions to attend:

Monday February 19th

2.30pm – 3.00pm

Tuesday February 20th

9.00am– 9.30 am

Friday March 2nd 9.00am – 9.30 am

Everyone is most welcome. You do not need to register just turn up!

Professional Practice Days In the Education State, we achieve excellence by consistently focusing on improving the achievements of learners across Victoria, whether it is through improving the quality of educational services or changing the way we teach. The most important thing we can do to improve student outcomes is to develop and improve the skills of our teachers. The Victorian Government will continue to provide opportunities to develop professional, passionate teachers and principals and equip them with the right knowledge and skills for a modern classroom. To ensure we support the learning and development of not only our students, but our teachers too; we are committed to providing professional development opportunities for our teaching workforce. What are Professional Practice Days? As part of the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2017, teachers will receive one day per term when they are out of the classroom to focus on the improved delivery of high quality teaching and learning. What does this mean for your child? Your child’s teacher will spend four days per year further developing their skills in areas that are aligned to the school priorities. Your child will directly benefit from these improvements in their daily learning.

KPS STUDENT LEADERSHIP BADGE PRESENTATION

FRIDAY 2ND

MARCH 2.15PM SCHOOL STADIUM

Badges to be presented by Jaclyn Symes, State Member for Northern Victoria

All welcome.

Please be seated by 2.10pm for a prompt start.

On these days, an alternate teacher will be provided with the learning plan for the day and be well equipped to assist your child with their learning needs. We are scheduling the professional practice days ahead of time so there is minimal impact to students and, where possible, there is consistency in teaching. If you would like more information on the professional practice days and when they are planned, please contact your School Principal.

School Council Elections 2018

I would like to thank the following parents who have served on School Council for the past two

years, Jill Patford, David Mac Bean, Rachel Riley, David McBean and Tracey Crane. Their work

for our school has been exceptional and their commitment greatly appreciated. As positions have

a two year tenure, their positions are up for re-election this year. Kilmore Primary School has five

parent vacancies for School Council this year. School Council is a very significant aspect of the

school governance. School Council meet at least eight times per year, generally in the evening

and each vacancy has a two year tenure. Parents on school council provide important viewpoints

and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who

become active on a School Council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that

their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

Election timeline:

Thursday February 15th: Nominations called for (forms can be collected from the office)

Thursday February 22nd: Nominations close (if the number of nominations exceeds the number of

vacancies and election process will commence and ballot papers will be distributed)

Thursday March 1st: Ballot Opens

Thursday March 8th : Ballot Closes

Ready, Set, Go!.... Team Challenges

Last Friday we celebrated teamwork and persistence during our Team Challenges morning as part of our ‘Ready, Set, Go!’ start up program. Teams of students ranging in age from Foundation to Grade 6 completed three different challenges. From

tangrams to towers, rafts to running and everything in between, there was certainly something to

challenge everyone.

Page 7: This week is Random Acts of Week! - Kilmore Primary School · This week is ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ Week! We are challenging ourselves to do at least one random act of kindness

Overheard from students…. “This is so much fun!” “We did it!!!!!”

“Look what we made!!!”

Congratulations to all students for having a go at the challenges. We hope our parents and special guests also enjoyed them! Thank you to our teachers for

organising a wide variety of tasks that were not only fun but also

allowed students to practise working in teams and using a growth mindset.

Overheard from students…. “Would you like a turn?” “Yeah! That could work!” “That’s a good idea!”

Page 8: This week is Random Acts of Week! - Kilmore Primary School · This week is ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ Week! We are challenging ourselves to do at least one random act of kindness

What a week! Classroom visits, playground visits, a book written about me, books read to me, dancing, picnics and team challenges. I also had my own canine challenge - it was quite tricky fitting in my afternoon naps during such full days, but I did it. 3/4G kindly decided to make some posters with tips about looking after me. They have made a book

out of them. It was a really nice surprise and I was so happy to see the pages when I visited their room.

Their ideas and illustrations are pawsome and include everything from walking up to me quietly to not

pulling my tail.

Above: Look who I found! Mr Babic, Miss MacCaskell, Miss McGrath, Miss Grech and Miss Frawley. I found them in the staffroom one day when I was looking for lunch. They are five of our eight new teachers at KPS this year. I’ve been sure to make them feel very welcome by wagging my tail, shedding lots of hair over them and sniffing (some would say licking) their legs. I’ll get a photo with our other new teachers, Miss Davies, Mrs Evans and Miss Spencer for next week’s newsletter.

Page 9: This week is Random Acts of Week! - Kilmore Primary School · This week is ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ Week! We are challenging ourselves to do at least one random act of kindness

I loved meeting new friends and chatting to old ones at the picnic. I also loved all the pats and cuddles. Unfortunately, no food came my way. My vet will be happy. My stomach not so much. I left my dancing shoes at home so couldn’t join in the STOMP pawformances. Instead, I enjoyed watching everyone’s clever dance moves. All classes spent a session with Sarah and two of her STOMP teachers learning dances during the day. At 6:30pm, it was time to bust a move and show parents and friends the dances. One of my favourite parts was watching the whole school community do the ‘Chicken Dance’.

Comments and questions that have put a smile on my dial this week… “You could go to the swimming trials and do doggy paddle!!!” “Are you going to dance, Asha?”

PS: It’s ‘Random Act of Kindness’ Week this week. I kindly picked up some popcorn so our yard stays clean. It had nothing to do with wanting to eat it! J

BEING ON TIME MATTERS This year KPS is aiming high!

We are setting a goal of having all students arriving at school on time. In 2017 we had an increasing number of students arriving late for school causing disruption in the

classrooms, congestion in the office and the loss of valuable learning time.

To help us achieve our goal we are launching our

Being on Time Matters campaign on Monday 19th February. Each class will have a jar and a collection of beads. For every student at school on time a bead will go in the jar,

with the first class to fill their jar each month being declared the winner.

Page 11: This week is Random Acts of Week! - Kilmore Primary School · This week is ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ Week! We are challenging ourselves to do at least one random act of kindness

BEING ON TIME MATTERS

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOUR CHILD TO ARRIVE AT SCHOOL ON TIME?

There are many benefits your child will gain from arriving on time to school and class.

Did you know?

The likelihood of success in learning is strongly linked to strong participation in school programs which is linked to arriving on time. It is very important for children to develop habits of arriving on time at an early age, beginning from the time they start school.

Some Gains for Your Child Arriving On Time for School and Class Makes sure that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities that happen early in the day when they are most alert. Early morning learning activity is often reading or writing your child can lose so many opportunities to learn these critical life skills. Helps your child to learn about routines and commitment. Gives your child time to greet their friends before class and this can reduce the possibility of disruptions in the classroom. Class disruption can make your child feel uncomfortable and can upset other children.

Arriving on time every day makes children feel good about themselves

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE IS COOL!

WORKING WITH CHILDRENS CHECK (WWCC)

To be able to work with children in classrooms, assist in Sport sessions or to accompany a class on excursions, parents need to have a Working with Children’s Check card.
