We, the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids, are a community of 245 women who follow the Catholic traditions of St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. Since 1877, we have taught children and ministered to the orphaned, partnered with nonprofit agencies and served in hospital ministries, social service agencies and hospice care. We have created works of art, helped lead liturgical reform and fostered life in parishes and communities. Today, based on the Marywood campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we engage in a wide variety of ministries throughout the United States and missions in Peru and Honduras.

What are your plans for 2012? Will this be the year you learn ballroom dancing, lose ten pounds or finally start volunteering for that organization you admire so much?

What aren’t you planning for 2012? You probably aren’t hoping for a roof leak, a broken leg or a failed relationship. Undoubtedly, you will also have pleasant surprises in the coming year. It’s impossible to plan for those. Who would want to?

Life, it seems, happens at the intersection of the things we do and don’t plan. While we will never have total power to form our lives, we can allow life to transform us.

Openness to transformation can make all the difference. It can make the difference between responding to life’s blessings with an attitude of entitlement or of gratitude. When facing suffering, transformation can make the difference between becoming embittered or deepening in love and compassion for others.

Dominican Center is dedicated to the work of transformation. We provide a peaceful, warm and welcoming place for people to come – to reflect and pray, learn and grow, as individuals and with others. We offer a variety of spirituality programs, workshops, retreats, individual and group spiritual direction. We offer hospitality, delicious food and gracious service - for those who use our conference services as groups, organizations, or simply as family and friends, gathering to celebrate life’s special events.

Deep in a man’s heart is the desire to live with passion, adventure and strength. Where do these desires come from? How can they be understood and harnessed to help a man live fully alive? Come join other men during this eight-week series on the journey to being fully alive as we discover the six stages a man goes through as he matures in life and faith: beloved son, cowboy, warrior, lover, king and sage. This eight-week series will show how God can guide your spiritual and personal growth through these stages of manhood so that you can become the glory of God, which is man fully alive!

GRIEF: WHEN MOURNING DAWNS (086-015)Loss and grief can challenge our sense of what is normal. Journeying through the seasons of your grief can help you learn to live again in new ways. This five-week process will give you step-by-step encouragement as you look for the light of hope. THROUGH A JEWISH LENS (086-047)Study and interfaith discussion of soul traits from the wisdom of the Hebrew Scriptures and rabbinical writings. This is a 13-week course with an introductory session to acquaint participants with a Jewish path of spiritual growth and help them discover their soul’s curriculum. Using the Hebrew Scriptures, the sayings of the rabbis, and a weekly practice, this is a wonderful opportunity for Christians, Jews and people of other faiths to share their spiritual journeys. Sessions will vary weekly between meetings of the whole group and individual meetings between program study companions.

Yet, bringing our whole self to prayer in new ways can be healing and transformative. Join us for a very special day away to explore various forms of “body prayer.” Open yourself to a new understanding of your body as a prayerful conduit to the Sacred through gentle and creative movement, simple yoga postures, walking, bowing and more – a fun and experiential day. WOMEN OF CONVICTION (086-029)In this year of interfaith understanding, we recognize that many women have served within a context of religious prejudice, often at great personal cost. This morning session will celebrate the lives of three such women: Elizabeth Ann Seton, Corrie ten Boom and Edith Stein. Our presenters will tell each woman’s story and then we will pray together in ways that sustained each of the women as they faced their life’s challenges. INTRODUCTION TO THE ENNEAGRAM (086-048)A timeless tool, the study of the Enneagram's nine personalities helps you discover your true self and helps you to better understand your perceptions of yourself and others. ANNUAL GATHERING OF SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS (086-044)As Spiritual Directors we receive stories, hurts, dreams and prayers in our own lives and from our directees. This gathering will support our ministry as spiritual directors and help us use Clara's method of "Lectio on Dreams" to integrate dream work into our spiritual practice. Based in our Biblical tradition of dreams, we will explore the layered meanings of dreams and awaken the Dream that dreams us into being.

PREACHING WITH THE MIND, EYES AND HEART OF A WOMAN (086-057) How can women and men work as partners to bring feminist perspectives to preaching the Gospel? Monday we will explore some of the global realities of women's lives and the importance of bringing women's perspectives to the reading of Scripture. Tuesday through Friday, we will explore ways of reading the Scriptures and preaching with the mind, eyes, and heart of a woman from each of the four Gospels.

MISUNDERSTANDING JUDAISM MEANS MISUNDERSTANDING JESUS (086-058)Jesus of Nazareth followed the Torah of Moses, found inspiration in the Prophets of Israel, and founded a community of fellow Jews. Yet often Jesus is misunderstood as rejecting Judaism, and first-century Judaism is misunderstood as legalistic, misogynist, vengeful, and xenophobic. Correctly locating Jesus in his Jewish context not only brings new meaning to his parables, his politics, and his piety, it both prevents anti-Jewish teaching and opens a new path for Jewish-Christian relations.

ENTRUSTED WITH THE WORD (086-059)According to Vatican II’s Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum, the Word of God, has been entrusted to the entire church. This presentation will focus on the share of all baptized persons in the prophetic mission of the church and the charisms given by the Holy Spirit as the source of the authority to preach. Particular attention will be given to the experience of women since the time of the Second Vatican Council and how Dominican spirituality can be a resource for the preaching ministry of the entire church.

A Dominican Sister from Marywood is available by phone (616-454-2424) from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. When a Sister is not at the phone, callers are invited to leave a message. The intentions of these callers are included daily when the Sisters gather for prayer.

The bookstore at Dominican Center supports the Dominican charisms of study and reflection with a fine collection of books and materials that will nourish the mind and heart of all pilgrims seeking light and food for the journey. Browse, read and let yourself get caught up in learning, reflection, enjoyment of ancient sources and contemporary resources. Books on spirituality and contemporary life are in abundance. An array of gifts, cards, candles and music round out the possibilities.

Spiritual Direction can best be summed up as the art of contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being. Traditionally, Spiritual Direction has been described in terms of a one-to-one relationship. Another approach that is relatively new is that of group Spiritual Direction. One’s situation in life and on-going discernment will determine which approach best fits an individual at any given time.

Spiritual Direction offers a safe, non-judgmental place of welcome for the directee where his/her experiences are taken seriously. Contemplation and personal reflection on one’s life and prayer bring this communication to awareness. Articulating and clarifying these experiences with a spiritual director assists the person to notice even more about his/her conscious relationship with God.

Benincasa

Benincasa House of Discernment, a ministry of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids, provides a place and opportunity for single Catholic women (beyond high school age) to experience and share in the Dominican Life of prayer, study, common life and ministry. This live-in experience occurs within the context of a life-giving community of Dominican Sisters who offer their support as the woman discerns God’s call and her future life direction.

Weekend or Weeklong Experiences are offered for women who would like to “try on” Dominican Life in a time frame that fits their school or work schedule. A longer stay is welcomed and encouraged.

Our Chapels are sacred spaces for prayer. Since its beginning in the thirteenth century, the Dominican Order has treasured liturgical prayer. Rooted in Dominican Spirituality and in the spirit of Vatican II, the depth of our liturgical prayer grounds us in Holy Mystery and helps us to be authentic in today’s world. The quality of preaching, musical leadership, and inclusivity in roles and relationships in the gathered assembly are of primary importance to us.

Sunday Eucharist In 1985, with the renovation of the Dominican Chapel Marywood, the Sisters invited lay people to join them in worship and song. Many have responded and the body of worshipers has grown along with their level of involvement. The Sunday Assembly continues to be a growing community of Sisters, Associates and lay people who have developed a strong spiritual bond with each other. Sunday Eucharist is celebrated in Chapel of the Word at 9:45 am and in Dominican Chapel Marywood at 11:00 am. All are welcome.

Morning and Evening Prayer As darkness gives way to the morning sun and as the sun sets on the day’s labors, we mark these sacred moments with psalms of praise and thanks. For Dominic and Catherine, communal prayer formed the foundation of their contemplative life and the holy preaching. It is so for us today. You are invited to join us for Morning and Evening Prayer.

Centering prayer is a method of deep prayer described in the Cloud of Unknowing in the 14th century. In contemporary form, it has become a popular source of spiritual renewal in today’s world.
