Human Experience: Our Journey Into Faith

SACRED PILGRIMAGE LEVEL I: A WAY OUT

This eight-session class is the foundation level of the program. It offers participants a simple, yet life-changing process for moving out of limiting, painful ways of living and into more natural, authentic, transparent, and enlivening ways of being. The course draws on the inspiration and guidance of the great sages and prophets throughout history who know this path intimately, and many of our contemporary spiritual teachers who navigate the challenging landscape of our times, e.g., Thomas Merton, Richard Rohr, David Benner, and Mark Nepo. Through integrating psychology and spirituality, we open up to a whole new way of being where we begin to uncover various manifestations of the false self. Note: This class is the first of three levels. Participants in Level I do not have to complete Level II & III unless you wish to continue with the process.

Series I: Program #086-059Tuesdays: Apr 28 - June 16 • 6:30 - 8:30 pmSeries II: Program #086-077Tuesdays: June 23 - Aug 4 • 6:30 - 8:30 pmCost: $300 *CFD: SpiritualityPresenter: Mark Walstrom, Psychotherapist and Spiritual Director

SACRED PILGRIMAGE LEVEL II: A WAY THROUGH

After completion of Level I, participants have the opportunity to enter more consciously and intentionally into the transformative process that was learned in Level I. This stage of the journey is known as liminal space or the place of transition. It is when we have left the familiar, but have not yet been able to replace it with anything else. Trained facilitators guide participants through entry point experiences that center, engage, and integrate mind, body and, heart – while allowing one’s life to unfold and evolve naturally in the midst of uncertainty. Participants have the opportunity to go deeper into this process if they so desire in Level III. Note: Completion of Level I is a prerequisite to Level II.

Series I: Program #086-060Mondays: May 4 - June 29 • 6:30 - 8:30 pmSeries II: Program #086-078Mondays: July 6 - Aug 24 • 6:30 - 8:30 pmCost: $175 *CFD: SpiritualityPresenter: Bob Funaro, MA, MDiv, EdD, LLP

SACRED PILGRIMAGE LEVEL III: A WAY INTO

At this level, the goal of the journey is cultivating participative knowing - a coming into direct experience with truth, reality, and God's love. Here we pay attention to creating Sacred Space, a container for spiritual growth and the coming together in community. Here we discover our deepest callings and true self. The painful sense of separation that drew us into this path gradually gives way to healing of the heart and communion with the source of life. Note: Completion of Level I and participation in Level II is a prerequisite to begin Level III.

THE ROSARY: MEDITATING WITH THE MYSTERIES

Dominicans have a long history of praying the Rosary in the face of distractions and longing for God. In this traditional month of the Rosary, we will explore this tradition of prayer and meditation, the place of devotion to Mary and her intercession, and journey through the life of Christ in prayerful reflection. As St. Pope John Paul II wrote "with the Rosary we sit at the school of Mary and learn to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love.”

Individual Spiritual DirectionSometimes we don't even know that it is God we are seeking, we just know there is something missing.

Spiritual Direction is contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being, to what God is asking of you, with the support of a trained companion. Spiritual Direction offers a secure and welcoming space to grow in awareness and relationship with God.

Worship Chapels at Marywood: Sacred Places to Meet God and Others

Our Chapels are sacred spaces for prayer. Rooted in Dominican Spirituality and in the spirit of Vatican II, the depth of our liturgical prayer grounds us in Holy Mystery and strengthens us to be authentic in today’s world. The quality of preaching and musical leadership in the gath-ered assembly are of great importance to us. The Eucharist is our common ground, where we are transformed and where God challenges us to serve authentically.

We are grateful for the services of the many priests who come to celebrate liturgy with us.

Places for Prayer, Meditation & Study at Marywood

"We must sow the seed, not hoard it."

– St. Dominic de Guzman

The St. Francis Sculpture Garden for Prayer and Meditation at Marywood is a meandering pathway through wooded areas and gardens featuring a series of bronze statues created by sculpture and painter Mic Carlson. The statues depict St. Francis of Assisi in various postures of prayer, meditation, teaching, and interacting with the natural world he loved so much. In 2004, many of these sculptures were on display at the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy and have inspired travelers from all over the world.

This garden is a project of Instruments of Hope, a Michigan-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting peace through artistic endeavors. Architect and master gardener Bill Cox created the atmosphere that combines foliage, benches, and sculptures with a scenic natural backdrop of the wooded site at Marywood to provide areas for reading and reflection.

The effects of Vatican Council II rightly can be described as a seismic shift in many aspects of the Catholic Church. This was true for all Catholics throughout the world, but in particular it was true for the Catholic Sisters in this country who took the documents of the Council to heart, diligently studied them, and changed almost every aspect of their lives – except their determination to continue their vowed life with a single-minded pursuit to do the will of God. The way was neither smooth nor easy.

Now the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids tell their own story of the years following Vatican Council II in Tapestry in Time, a forthcoming book published by Wm B. Eerdmans. Tapestry in Time is the second volume of the history of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids. The first volume, Period Pieces, traces the Sisters’ history from their arrival in Michigan in 1853 up to the close of Vatican Council II in 1966.

Focusing on the four essential elements of Dominican Life—prayer, study, common life, and service—Tapestry in Time features the words and writings of the Sisters who recall with honesty, candor, and humor the struggle and the joy of living in those changing times. Their stories reveal ingenuity and courage as Sisters adopted new ways of prayer, new ministries, inclusive language, and continued serious academic and theological study in colleges and universities here and abroad.

Dominican Sisters ~ Grand RapidsOur mission is that of Jesus ~ to be God’s saving grace in the world. This has been our endeavor since our beginning in 1877 as teachers and caregivers of children. In 1889, we were called to Grand Rapids to staff St. John's Orphanage. Within the year, our Sisters were caring for children, teaching at the new St. Alphonsus School and feeding, clothing, and ministering to people in need. As Sisters in the Order of Preachers, we share our lives guided by the Dominican pillars of study, prayer, common life, and ministry. Formed by the Word of God, we preach the good news of Jesus Christ.

Our Sisters serve in schools and institutions of higher learning, healthcare, hospice, and social service ministries. We are leaders in liturgical reform and activity. We support and foster life in parishes and lay communities. We provide spiritual direction and guidance. We are artists, poets, painters, authors, sculptors, musicians, and photographers.

As Dominicans, we advocate for justice:• Care of Earth / Climate Change • Global Economics• Human Trafficking • Migration / Immigration• Ending Homelessness

On our Marywood campus in Grand Rapids, we have created welcoming places for ministries of worship, learning, meditation, art, respite, and healing. Many other ministries with connections to our Michigan-based Motherhouse can be found in urban and rural settings across the country and in Peru and Honduras.

We uphold these four cornerstones as the hallmarks of Dominican Life:

Prayer is at the heart of our lives and our commitment.

Study is the pursuit of truth through formal and informal learning.

Common Life is the source of our strength, courage, opportunity, growth, and meaning.

Ministry is the way in which we serve God, the Church, and humanity. We preach in a variety of ways. We respect cultural differencesand the dignity of all people.

We are founded for and committed to teaching and preaching the Word of God in what we say and what we do. We joyfully embrace our vocation to seek God as the sole desire of our heart and to be the compassion and justice of Jesus in our time and place.
