BELIEF IN GOD THE CREATOR AND CONTEMPORARY EXPERIENCEWhat we believe about God as creator impacts our theology and action in many ways. In his book, Dr. David Moffett-Moore examined some of these implications by looking at topics as diverse as quantum physics and chaos theory, hermeneutics, ethics, and how we tell stories of faith. Dr. Moffett-Moore not only believes that we can accept the findings of science and still be faithful Christians, he believes that discoveries in fields such as physics and biology can help us talk about God in a more relevant and compelling way, while also finding a new call to live in a way that is faithful both to Scripture and the wonders of physical Creation.

INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP TO CENTERING PRAYERCentering Prayer is silent prayer. We are not silent very often. Centering Prayer means that you carve out some minutes of silence in each day. This is time for communion with God, it’s to develop a closer, deeper intimacy with Christ. It is not personal time for centering on one’s self. But rather centering upon God who is the center of all. It frees one from selfish desire and focuses on self as a servant of God who is devoted to God and others.

How to be silent in prayer? We learn to use a prayer word, chosen by the leading of the Holy Spirit, to dismiss the thoughts that come to mind. Come, avail yourself of opportunities to learn the method of Centering Prayer at Dominican Center.

Attend this workshop on Saturday, Oct. 18 and engage in followup sessions, which can be done in one’s own home. Program #086-087Date: Oct 18 9 am - 3 pmFacilitator: Rev. David Muyskens Cost: $40 CFD: Spirituality of the Catechist

ONGOING WEEKLY CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER GROUPSYou don't have to attend the Workshop to learn Centering Prayer to get started. You may find one of these ongoing Centering Prayer groups more convenient for your schedule. Both are located in the Meditation Chapel in the back of Dominican Chapel / Marywood.

an Experience: Our Journey Into Faith

Human Experience: Our Journey Into FaithINDIVIDUAL SPIRITUAL DIRECTIONSometimes we don't even know that its God we're seeking, we just know there is something missing.

Spiritual Direction is contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being, to what God is asking of you with the support of a trained companion. Spiritual Direction offers a secure and welcoming space to grow in awareness and relationship with God.

For more information, call 616-514-3325

CULTIVATING COMPASSIONATE PRESENCE WORKSHOPAre there times you wished you had responded with more compassion during a conversation? How often have you, a care-giver, a parent, a spiritual director, a grandparent, a spouse, felt compassion for another yet you were not able to respond compassionately? This program will explore finding answers to questions such as these through the use of the gift of empathy. Our compassion for another is communicated by using the gift of empathy. Learning how to use this gift effectively can create an effective compassionate connection with the other. This is an interactive class with dialogue, role playing and other practice applying the lessons.

• The characteristics of an empathetic listener • Using the operative principles for empathetic listening • Distinguishing what empathy is and is not • Understanding the difference between empathy and sympathy • Discerning when empathy is operative

ENNEAGRAM OF PERSONALITY WORKSHOP PART 1 This Enneagram of Personality Workshop is an introductory class designed to assist in increasing self-knowledge through the discovery and understanding of our own core motivational stance. Core motivational stance helps us understand why we respond as we do to personal life experiences. It also helps us realize why and how others in the same situations see and respond so differently. Workshop participant goals include:

• Grow in self-knowledge and self-responsibility • Become aware of the need to consciously choose responsive rather than reactive behaviors • Decrease negative judgments of self and others • Experience a greater appreciation of perspective different from one’s own • Create more positive attitudes and interactions with others

The workshop dynamics include brief presentations of content, multiple interactive processes and personal reflective exercises.

SACRED PILGRIMAGE LEVEL I: A WAY OUTThis eight-session class is the foundation level of the program. It offers participants a simple, yet life-changing, process for moving out of limiting, painful ways of living and into more natural, authentic, transparent and enlivening ways of being. The course draws on the inspiration and guidance of the great sages and prophets throughout history who know this path intimately, and many of our contemporary spiritual teachers who navigate the challenging landscape of our times, e.g., Thomas Merton, Richard Rohr, David Benner and Mark Nepo. Through integrating psychology and spirituality, we open up to a whole new way of being where we begin to uncover the various manifestations of the false self. Note: This class is the first of three levels. This is a stand-alone class. Participants in Level I do not have to complete Level II & III unless you wish to continue with the process. Read about all levels at: http://dominicancenter.com/sacred-pilgrimage/Dates: Tuesday evenings, Sept 9 – Oct 28 • 6:30-8:30 pmCost: $300 CFD: Spirituality Program #086-042

SACRED PILGRIMAGE LEVEL II: A WAY THROUGHAfter completion of Level I, participants have the opportunity to enter more consciously and intentionally into the transformative process that was learned in Level I. This stage of the journey is known as liminal space or the place of transition. It is when we have left the familiar, but have not yet been able to replace it with anything else. Trained facilitators guide participants through entry point experiences that center, engage and integrate mind, body and heart – while allowing one’s life to unfold and evolve naturally in the midst of uncertainty. There is no completion of Level II, but participants have the opportunity to go deeper into the process if they desire in Level III. Note: Completion of Level I is a prerequisite to begin Level II. Dates: Monday evening, Sept 22 – Nov 10 • 6:30-8:30 pmCost: $175 CFD: Spirituality Program #086-043

SACRED PILGRIMAGE LEVEL III: A WAY INTOAt this level, the goal of the journey is cultivating participative knowing — a coming into direct experience with truth, reality and God’s love. Here we pay attention to creating Sacred Space – a container for spiritual growth and the coming together in community. Here we discover our deepest callings and true self. The painful sense of separation that drew us into this path gradually gives way to healing of the heart and communion with the source of life. Note: Completion of Level I and participation in level II is a prerequisite to start Level III. Dates: Starting in October Cost: $175 CFD: Spirituality Program #086-051

Worship Chapels at Marywood: Sacred Places to Meet God with OthersOur Chapels are sacred spaces for prayer. Rooted in Dominican Spirituality and in the spirit of Vatican II, the depth of our liturgical prayer grounds us in Holy Mystery and strengthens us to be authentic in today’s world. The quality of preaching, musical leadership, and inclusivity in roles and relationships in the gathered assembly are of primary importance to us. The Eucharist is our common ground, where we are transformed and where God challenges us to serve authentically.

Dominican Chapel / Marywood • Meditation Chapel at Dominican Chapel • Chapel of the Word at Marywood Health Center • Catherine of Siena Chapel at Aquinata Hall

Sunday Eucharist (Mass) Since 1985 with the renovation of the Marywood Chapel, the Dominican Sisters have invited lay people to join them in worship and song. Many have responded and the body of worshipers has grown along with their level of involvement. The Sunday Assembly continues to be a growing community of Sisters, Associates and lay people who have developed a strong spiritual bond with each other. Sunday Eucharist is celebrated in Dominican Chapel / Marywood at 10:00 am. On holiday weekends, Eucharist is celebrated on Saturday at 4:00 pm. We are grateful for the services of our Diocesan and Order priests who come to celebrate liturgy with us.

Weekday Eucharist is celebrated on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:45 am in Aquinata Chapel. On Wednesdays, Eucharist is celebrated at 9:45 am in Chapel of the Word at Marywood Health Center.

Morning and Evening Prayer Our Dominican Prayer of the Hours is an integral expression of our common life. As darkness gives way to the morning sun and as the sun sets on the day’s labors, we mark these sacred moments with psalms of praise and thanks. For Dominic and Catherine, communal prayer formed the foundation of their contemplative life and the holy preaching. The psalms of Morning and Evening Prayer are chanted daily with simple psalm tones at 9:30 am and 4:30 pm. All are welcome. Please check website for Chapel location.

Cemetery Prayer of September 3, 2014 On Wednesday, September 3, we will observe the anniversary of deceased Sisters, Associates, friends and benefactors with prayers at Resurrection Cemetery at 11:00 am. All are welcome.

Dominican Sisters ~ Grand RapidsOur mission is that of Jesus ~ to be God’s saving grace in the world. This has been our endeavor since our beginning in 1877 as teachers and care givers of children. In 1889, we were called to Grand Rapids to staff St. John Orphanage. Within the year, our Sisters were caring for children, teaching at the new St. Alphonsus School and feeding, clothing and ministering to people in need. As Sisters in the Order of Preachers, we share our lives guided by the Dominican pillars of study, prayer, common life and ministry. Formed by the Word of God, we preach the good news of Jesus Christ.

Our Sisters serve in schools and institutions of higher learning, healthcare, hospice and social ser-vice ministries. We are leaders in liturgical reform and activity. We support and foster life in parishes and lay communities. We provide spiritual direction and guidance. We are artists: poets, painters, authors, sculptors and photographers.

As Dominicans, we advocate for justice:• Care of Earth / Climate Change • Global Economics• Human Trafficking • Migration / Immigration• Ending Homelessness

On our Marywood Campus in Grand Rapids, we have created welcoming places for ministries of assembly, worship, learning, meditation, art, respite and healing. Many other ministries with connections to our Michigan based Motherhouse can be found in urban and rural settings across the country and in Peru and Honduras.

We uphold these four cornerstones as the hallmarks of Dominican Life:

Prayer is at the heart of our lives and our commitment.

Study is the pursuit of truth through formal and informal learning.

Common Life is the source of our strength, courage, opportunity, growth and meaning.

Ministry is the way in which we serve God, the Church, people who are oppressed; we preach in a variety of ways. We respect cultural differences and the dignity of each person.

We are founded for and committed to teaching and preaching the Word of God in what we say and what we do. We joyfully embrace our vocation to seek God as the sole desire of our heart and to be the compassion and justice of Jesus in our time and place.
