Welcome

Marywood Simmentals is the legacy of more than two decades of intensive genetic development. Our breeding program is designed

to produce high performance breeding bulls and replacement females with the increased maternal and carcass traits needed to put our

customers ahead in today’s competitive beef industry. This tradition is carried forward through the Marywood Breeders Group.

Our mission is to produce superior Simmental genetics that are demonstrated through measurable performance, ultrasound and car-

cass evaluations. Our breeding selections are made based on a complete balance with skeletal structure, conformation, body length,

tenderness, maternal traits, fertility, docility, longevity and feed efficiency; all backed by EPD's, Across Breed Comparison (ABC)

numbers and genomic (DNA) data.

This program allows us to offer you bulls that are at the top of their class for adding more lean meat yield, calving ease and maternal

traits to your herd. You can find more information about our selection process and videos of the bulls walking on our website,

www.marywood.ca. We improve our numbers every year so that you can improve yours. We pride ourselves on our bulls because of

the strong positive influence they can have on your calf crop and your breeding program!

I’ve been in the industry my whole life and love talking about cattle. If you have any question about selecting a bull, or questions

about the numbers we use please contact me and I’d be happy to work with you to make sense of it all.

Well it's been a long time coming but I think it's finally here a turnaround in a long and hard beef cycle . With global herd numbers

close to a thirty year low it seems there's never been a better time to be in beef. Although with tight supply of hay and straw cost of

production can be a challenge. What better time to bolster your herd with a good young bull or replacement female?

Thank you for all your support.

Information  we  use  to  make  good  breeding  decisions.

Marywood  Breeders  Group  is  dedicated  to  producing  the  highest  quality  animals  using  every  resource  available  to  make  the  best  breeding  decisions.  We  evaluate  the  genetic  potential  and  future  production  capabilities  of  our  animals  using  production  measurements,   genetic   evaluations   and   good   common   sense.  A   genetic   evaluation   tool   that  works   for   all  breeds  of  cattle  is  the  BIO  Across  Breed  Calculations  (ABCs).  These  ABC  values  are  expressed  as  a  percentile;  this  makes  100  the  top  of  the  class  and  0  the  bottom.  ABCs  are  calculated  using  data  collected  from  all  breeds  of  cattle  which  makes  this  a  tool  for  comparing  traits,  such  as  calving  ease  (CE),  within  a  breed,  between  breeds  and  in  crossbred  cattle  as  well.  The  best  way   to  use   these  numbers  on  your  herd   is   to  purchase  animals  with  numbers   that  would  complement  your  breeding  goals.  If  you  don’t  know  the  numbers  for  your  herd,  the  table  below  shows  the  average  BIO  ABC  rankings  for  all  breeds  as  well  as  Angus,  Charolais,  and  Simmentals  for  reference.  This  table  is  here  to  show  the  norms  between  breeds  and  highlight  how  our  bulls  measure  up  compared  to  other  breeds  in  general.

You  may  have  noticed  the  CSA  EPD’s  have  changed.  This  fall  (2013)  evaluation  includes  several  major  improvements  for  users  of  Simmental  genetic  EPD’s.    This   is  due  to  a  new  EPD  provider:  The  American  Simmental  Association.    CSA  now  has   access   to   a  much   larger   dataset   that   includes  both  Canadian   and  American   Simmental   data   as  well   as   data   from  other  breed  associations  such  as  the  American  Red  Angus,  the  Canadian  Angus,  the  American  Gelbvieh  Association  and  others.      Another  significant  improvement  is  the  move  to  an  evaluation  model  originally  developed  by  Cornell  University.

The   CSA   EPDs   are   expressed   in   the   following   units   of   measurement:   CE  (calving  ease)   in   units   of   %  unassisted;      BW     (birth  weight)   in   units   of    pounds;      WW     (weaning  weight)   in   units   of   pounds;     YW     (yearling  weight)  in   units   of  pounds;  MCE  (Total  Maternal  Calving  Ease)  in  units  of  %  unassisted;    WW  (maternal  weaning  weight)  in  units  of  pounds;    Milk  (milk)  in  units  of  pounds.

 Understanding  ultrasound  data.

Ultrasound   technology  allows  us   to  actually   see  under  an  animal’s  hide   to  measure   ribeye  area   (REA),  marbling   (IMF)  and  back  fat  (Fat).  These  values  can  be  used  to  calculate  lean  meat  yield  (LMY).  It  is  important  to  use  this  information  to  ensure  the  genetic  evaluations  (ABCs  and  CSA  EPDs)  are  pointing  us  in  the  right  direction.  As  important  as  genetics  are  in  beef   production,   you   can’t   get   away   without   looking   at   your   animals   to   make   sure   they   are   sound   with   good  conformation.  Ultrasound  lets  you  look  in  your  animal  to  make  sure  that  you  are  producing  a  quality  beef  product.  At  the  end  of  the  day  this  is  a  beef  producing  industry!

FEED RATION & BULL SELECTION FOR KEY TRAITS

The Marywood Bull Test Station feeds a high protein forage

diet, consisting of baled hay and grain (oat-wheat screenings,

and corn distillers) topped with Kenpal mineral. This years bull

ration had less energy resulting in lighter EOT wt, however the

bulls have continued to gain weight and fill out into herd bulls.

What a great demonstration of feed conversion and efficiency.

After the feed test, they are put on a limited grain diet, including

Kenpal mineral, with a higher amount of bailed wrapped hay to

give them the growth and gain they need to become high per-

forming breeding bulls.

The bulls are selected for several key traits

Temperament

Feet and Legs / Frame

Across Breed Comparisons, Simmental EPDs

Sire / Dam

Birth weight, weaning weight, (ADG)

Scrotal Circumference (SC)

Lean meat yield (LMY)

Ultrasound measurement for Fat, REA, and Marbling

WINTERING PROGRAM FOR YOUR NEW BULL

A wintering program is available for your new herd bull. After

the sale we are able to keep your new bull at our test center on a

ration that will have him ready for breeding season when you are

ready to take him home.

We have a feed & yardage rate of $3.00 a day for all bulls pur-

chased from the Marywood Breeders Group from Sale day until

your ready for you are new herd bull.

By record keeping for your entire herd, you can be certain to select the

best herd bull for all of your animals. This will help you maximize

profit in your herd by decreasing the number of calves lost due to birth-

ing complications and increase your average calf crop weaning weights

by up to 10-20%. As an example based on a cow herd of 25, increasing

the number of live calves at weaning from 22 to 24 by improving calv-

ing ease and increasing your average weaning weight from 600lbs to

730lbs you could increase your income by $4320.00 (based on $1.35

per pound for each weaned calf).

The Marywood sale has become a tradition about good cattle that perform, add carcass traits and work in commercial or pure-bred operations. We are honoured to work with the Marywood Breeders Group as we all believe in common goals being func-tional productive cattle and core principles that stand behind what we produce. We are confident in our breeding program and be assured these cattle will work for you. We are in beef market conditions we have never experience before. Never have we seen a time when investing in cattle that produce red meat with efficiency has been more important . The price spreads between effi-cient and wasty cattle has never been greater. We now are seeing 60 to 70 cent spreads between calves that are at the top end of the market and the cattle that lack length of body, ribeye and imefficient animals that lay down to much fat cover to achieve suffi-cient marbling to grade. The Marywood Group have been collecting carcass and performance data on our herds for more years than we can remember. There are few herds in beef business like the Marywood Group where you can buy with the confidence these cattle have above average breed EPD's, BIO across breed comparisons and BIO$ indexes. Wiser Heights Stock Farms Mature Cow Dispersal

The path of life is full of bumps, road blocks and different paths. Here at Wiser Heights life has taken us down a new path. Brad has started a new career that requires more of his time and with a young family we felt it was the right time to disperse our mature cows. We started building this herd in 2001, selecting the top black purebred genetics, our goal was to build a herd of females that would produce offspring that would go on to make great breeding cattle or top the stocker sale. While spending time analyzing each cow in the herd, it isn’t hard to see the consistency amongst our cows, they are all youthful, moderate frame, tight ud-der, deep body cows, with an excellent disposition. With two young kids we made sure that all our cows are quiet and easy to handle. We vaccinate with Bovi Shield Gold 5 FP and Scour Bos 9 every year when we do herd health in the fall. For the last 10 years we have been marketing our steers and heifers through the Bluewater Black Calf Club sale held annually in Keady, every year our calves top the market, the same this year with record prices!!! All the cows are bred to a 680S son from the Maplerose Herd, he puts pounds on his calves. We are confident that these cows will work in any program and put money in your pocket!!

PROBULL Stock Farms

Here at PROBULL STOCK FARM, we make a real effort not to breed a purebred animal. We started this way back in the early 90'z and have achieved a base herd that excels in all the economically important traits. We base our composite breeding program on both Red and Black Angus and also Red and Black Simmental, but we need Purebreds to work or program.

Our strategy of stacking selected genetics on top of selected genetics has resulted in cattle that are constant in all traits, and seem-ingly, fertility is the first thing to excel and we select hard for that, udders, temperament, feet and ease of keeping have been achieved through our selection process. Multi-generation composites, we've done it many a time, and the result is consistency of type, calving ease, big on performance and growth, calf birth vigor and being aggressive at the feed bunk. They can't live if they don't get up and suck and they sure cannot gain if they don't know how to stand at the feed bunk, our cattle possess these special traits.

As was at THE PIC BULL SALE this past spring, PRO 313A and PRO 318A, they are 3/4 brothers, peas in a pod, little to chose from between them, performance very similar, appearance very similar, all very similar. Then just recently, PRO 339 and PRO 340(lot 14), again they are 3/4 brothers, and as mentioned in my footnotes for PRO340, they gained exactly the same over 120 day period, and again stature is very similar, PEAS IN A POD, just as the females we have consigned, PEAS IN A POD, and bred and developed for a rewarding experience whether it be in your pasture or my pasture.

Multi-generations of goodness, years of seeing it happen, and with each year our cattle have become more predictable.

As Kevin Pfeffer says on a recent bus tour to PROBULL, "and I thought I had a good set of cows, I got work to do", my reply, "well Kevin when you talk the talk, you better walk the walk"! the BEEF GUY MCCOUBREY,JACK AND JANET 9907 LITTLE WOOD DR. The farms that make up the Marywood Breeders Group work toward the common goal of producing some of

the top genetics in the beef industry to give our customers the edge they need. We make breeding decisions

using EPDs, ABCs, genetics (DNA) and good old-fashioned common sense. We follow these animals after

they are born and only the highest performing animals stick around to form our foundation females and herd

sires. The bulls we sell are put on feed test, ultra-sounded for carcass traits and visually inspected before

selection for our sale. Some of the top females from our calf crop and herd are offered too. We are proud of

what we do and stand behind every animal we offer.

My  wife  and  I  are  carrying  on  the  Marywood  Simmental  name  with  a  growing  herd  of  our  own.  I  currently  help  manage  the  Marywood  Breeders  Group.   I   have  been   involved   in   the   cattle   industry   for  most  of  my   life.  My  wife   Taika,   is   in   her   final   year  of  veterinary  school  with  plans  to  go  into  a  large  animal  practice.      The  Marywood  Breeders  Group  is  looking  at  the  beef  industry  as  a  whole   and   striving   to  produce   animals   that  will  make   cow   calf   producers  more   successful,   but   also  produce   animals   that  will   do  better  in  the  feedlot,  and  have  more  saleable  meat  in  the  cooler.    For  the  consumer  we  want  them  to  have  a  consistent  experience  eating   tender  beef.    This   is  our  passion,   to   strive   for  an  animal   that   can   improve   the  whole   industry,   that’s  why  we  use   so  many  metrics,  measurements,  genetic  evaluations  as  well  as  DNA.    So  when  you  buy  animals   from  us,  you  know  you’re   improving  your  herd  as  well  as  the  industry  for  today  and  tomorrow.

Richwood  Simmentals  Rich  Wooddisse:    Richwood  Simmentals  RR1  Moorefield,  ON  N0G2K0      (519)  638-‐3245        [email protected]

Back   in   1984  we   registered  our   first   Simmentals   and  began  our   quest   to   produce   the   ultimate   beef   animal.   In   1987  we  started  BIO   testing  bulls   at   the  Arkelll   test   centre.  But  more   importantly   in   that   year   I  married   the   love  of  my   life   Janette.   For   a  wedding  gift  my  tremendous  family  give  us  nothing  better  than  a  beautiful  Simmental  heifer  and  the  herd  began  to  build.  Shortly  after  that  Marywood  Simmentals  began.  That  was  the  start  of  an  accelerated  effort  to  find  the  recipe  for  efficient  beef  production.

EPDs  were  the  place  to  search  out  animals  with  calving  ease,  maternal  calving  ease  along  with  performance.  Cattle  that  are  structurally  correct,  problem  free  with  a  compatible  attitude  are  a  must  .    The  goal  to  achieve  was  and  is  a  cow  to  easily  calve  6%  of  her  weight  and  wean  at  205  days  50%  of  her  weight.    Then  to  have  that  calf  go  on  to  finish  at  a  market  weight  of  1400   lbs  at  14  months    with  a  AA  marble  and  a  65%  lean  meat  yield.  More  importantly  she  should  have  her  first  calf  before  her  second  birthday  and  maintain  a  12  month  calving  interval  till  10  yrs  of  age.  Lofty  goals  but  if  you  do  not  set  the  bar  high    efficiencies  needed  will  not  be  achieved.  Ultrasound  information  scrotal  and  frame  score  became  a  regular  part  of  the  selection  process.

With  the  increased  costs  of  land  base,  we  have  reduced  our  cow  herd  down  under  40  breeding  females.  We  believe  there  are  efficient  aspects  of  our  fall  calving  program.  Short  fall  grass  on  limited  pastures  reduce  udder  blow-‐ups.  Pasture  calving  on  warm  dry  ground  reduces  mortalities.  Weaning  calves  to  spring  grass  for  minimal  stress.  Peak  prices  for  grass  calves,  on  the  down  side  is  the  need  for  higher  quality  winter.    Regardless  of  whether  you  calve  in  winter,  spring,  summer  or  fall  our  goal  remains  the  same  to  produce  fertile  functional  cattle  that  will  adapt  to  your  environment  and  be  efficient   in   increasing  your  bottom   line.  We   thank  you   for   interest   in   the  program  and   look   forward   to  working  with  you  in  the  future.

McRobdon  Simmentals  Bob  &  Donna  McFarlane:    RR6  Mount  Forest,  ON  N0G  2L0      (519)  323-‐1780        [email protected]

McRobdon  Simmentals  have  been  affiliated  with  the  Wooddisse  family  and  Marywood  for  the  past  16  years.    We  started  off  with   a   small   full   blood   cowherd  with   quality   genetics   and   have   gradually   switched   to   a   red   and   black   purebred   herd   and  most  recently  to  a  fall  calving  program.

We  are   also   aligned  with   the  Marywood  Breeders  Group   in   an   attempt   to   bring   you,   are   buyers   a   predictable   purchase  followed  up  by  the  carcass  and  genetic  information  to  help  you  get  a  good  payback  at  the  end  of  the  day.    We  have  proven  over  the  years  that  genetics  can  drive  performance.    We  look  forward  to  your  enquiries  and  assure  you  that  we  stand  behind  our  product.

Our  cowherd  consists  of  75  breeding  females,  retaining  about  15  bull  and  30  heifer  calves  to  develop  annually.  We  have  55  cows   in  our  winter   calving  group  and  20   females   in   the   fall  program.  We  AI  about  20   to  25   females  and   run  4  of   the  Marywood  Group  partnership  herd  bulls  during   spring  breeding   season  and  2   in   the   fall   group.  We  breed   in  excess  of  100   females   annually  selling  25  to  30  bred  heifers  or  young  cows  each  year.

Our  winter  born  bull  calves  are  developed  at  the  Kenilworth  Bull  Test  Station  and  the  fall  bulls  with  the  Marywood  Group.  We  sell  the  bulls  annually  through  the  PIC  and  Marywood  sales,  as  well  through  private  treaty.  The  heifer  calves  we  develop  at  home  on   a   growing   ration   to  make   females   that  will   not   need   to  be  pampered  as  mature   cows.  We  ultrasound  evaluate   and  breed   to  selected  AI  sires  or  our  easy  calving  herd  bull  for  that  purpose.

We  select  our   cowherd  and  herd   sires   very  hard   for   temperament,   confirmation,   fertility  and   longevity.  Our   selection  of  external   herd   sires   and   replacement   females   is   based   on   historical   information  we   have   access   to,   carcass   evaluation,   expected  progeny  differences  and  breeding  goals  that  we  want  to  enhance.  Our  cattle  are  low  maintenance  and  have  to  do  it  on  their  own,  as  we  are  not  always  there  all  the  time  because  of  other  commitments.  Thanks  for  your  interest  in  our  program.
