Society of Registered Male Nurses ’
During the past year membership of this society hasincreased by some 600, including about 400 student members.A number of new branches have been formed, and at theannual general meeting on Jan. 24 it was agreed to set upcouncils in each of the National Health Service regions, witha national executive council. The policy of the society willbe decided at an annual delegate conference.
New Radiotherapy Department at PortsmouthSir Cecil Wakeley, P.R.C.S., opened the new radiotherapy
unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, on Jan. 27. Tne
department, built at a modest cost, is an adaptation of a partof the hospital, and is a self-contained unit. It consists ofthree deep X-ray treatment rooms (220-250 kV.) and twosuperficial X-ray rooms (75-135 kV.), a radium room, anoutpatient clinic, a records and administration section, andwaiting-room. A population of approximately 600,000 inthe Portsmouth and Chichester group is served. Sir Cecil inhis speech emphasised the importance of this relatively newancillary service, and the advantage of close cooperationbetween radiotherapy and the general medical and surgicaldepartments. He praised the bright and spacious rooms andpointed out the beneficial effect on the patient’s morale.
Prof. R. J. S. McDowall, who holds the chair of physiologyat King’s College, London, has been awarded the medal of tueUniversity of Ghent.
Dr. D. E. Derry and Dr. R. W. Haines have been awardedthe Order of El Maaref (second class) in recognition of theirservices as professors of anatomy at the Fuad I University,Cairo.

Dr. Margaret Tod is visiting Austria, sponsored by theBritish Council. She is giving a series of lectures on theradiotherapy of cancer.
Mr. C. Price Thomas, under the auspices of the BritishCouncil, is spending two weeks in Yugoslavia lecturing andgiving demonstrations on the surgical treatmentof tuberculosis.He is accompanied by Dr. Robert Machray and Mr. PeterJones.
