National Volunteer WeekThis week is National Volunteer Week, which is a great opportunity to acknowledge the generosity of our many volunteers, who give up their own time to support our school.

The theme for National Volunteer Week 2019 is “Making a world of difference.” And that is exactly what our volunteers do!

We are so lucky to have so many parents, grandparents, caregivers and community members who generously volunteer their time to support our school and our students. We truly appreciate the efforts, commitment and time you freely give.

Here are just a few of the benefits of volunteering;

• 95% of volunteers say that volunteering is related to feelings of wellbeing.

• Volunteering builds citizenship, inspiring people to work together to solve problems and take action to improve community life.

There are many ways to volunteer not just at school but also in the wider community. GoVolunteer is a great website where you can search for volunteering opportunities in your local area. Visit https://govolunteer.com.au/ for more information.

Did you know? Family ZoneDid you know that we partner with Family Zone to support you and your children to navigate their online world?

Family zone assist with managing your child’s screen time, keeping content child-friendly, restricting social media and locating devices, along with many other features.

We will be scheduling some family information sessions later in the year. In the meantime find out what’s new online, where the risks lie and how Family Zone can help you and your family navigate the rapidly changing landscape, go to the website below for more information. https://www.familyzone.com/athelstone-sa

NAPLAN 2019Congratulations to the children in Years 3, 5 and 7 who were able to participate in NAPLAN online this year.

There were a few minor issues at the national level on the first day which we were able to overcome thanks to the persistence of Mr Farmer. All other scheduled sessions went to plan.

It was great to see students engage easily with the online platform, taking it all in their stride. What is great about the online test is that it is a tailored test which will adapt to student responses, presenting students with questions that may be more or less difficult – resulting in better assessment and more precise results. This will support us locally, state level and nationally to improve the educational outcomes of all students. Out of all that though we know what NAPLAN doesn’t and can’t measure. Your children are great in all the ways that matter and that’s why we love learning alongside them.

OsHC Policy updateThe OSHC service is growing in numbers and we are at full capacity on several days. It is important that you give us plenty of notice for bookings and cancellations to ensure we have adequate staff on as well as being able to offer a place to children on the waiting list. For these reasons the OSHC cancellation policy has been reviewed and the following changes are advised;

• 48 hours notice is required for before and after school care cancellations, otherwise regular fees apply. An exception to this is if a medical certificate is provided, which needs to be received within 5 working days of the child’s absence.

• Vacation care will stay at 7 days notice.

Helping kids feel good by doing good

We all want our kids to feel good. Ice cream, days at the beach and play dates may bring kids joy, but once they’re finished the good feelings often disappear.

These feel-good activities give kids a rush of euphoria, but leave them craving for more. This can lead to an addictive cycle known as ‘the hedonic treadmill’ where one cookie isn't enough. They'll need two. Maybe the next week, they’ll need three.

Good deedsDoing good, however, is the key to living a more meaningful and happier existence. The ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle knew it was true, and modern research bears out the fact altruistic behaviours are associated with better wellbeing, health and longevity. In short, we feel good when we do good.

Kind KidsEvery parent wants happy kids. The easiest way to help kids attain happiness is to encourage them to be kind.

Many studies show that our kids want to be kind. They know it makes them happy! Research shows that children from as young as fourteen months want to help others achieve individual goals and cooperate with others to achieve shared goals. This desire to help is something they’re born with – even that child of yours who doesn’t seem to want to help anyone!

A recent landmark study showed even very young kids find helpful and kind acts to be intrinsically rewarding. Two year olds’ showed greater happiness when they gave treats to others, compared to when they received treats themselves.

Teaching Our Kids to Do GoodIf kids want to help because it helps them feel great, it’s our job to help fulfill this natural inclination by guiding them to age-appropriate opportunities to do so.

Here are 5 ways to do just that:

• Role model helpfulness and kindness. Children and teenagers learn to be helpfulandkindbycopyingthesignificantadultsintheirlives.

• encourage them to perform small acts of kindness. Being kind, giving a compliment, helping to tidy up- these small acts are just as powerful and effective as larger tasks such as mowing the lawn for a neighbour.

• Make helping a family project. Get your kids involved when you take a meal to a family who have just had a new baby, or visit a sick friend in the hospital.

• Be a good neighbour. Help your kids learn to keep an eye on others, whether it is a neighbour, or a boy on their sports team. Teaching your kids to notice what’s going on in the lives of people in their community promotes awareness and empathy.

• Be grateful. expressing gratitude is one of the best ways to do good. In fact, nothing can improve your life (and the life of others) like gratitude.

Doing good deeds is what makes us human. It lifts burdens from others, and lifts us by activating the joyful part of our brains. Teaching your kids to do good is the best way to help them have lasting ‘feel good’ feelings. Of course, they should eat cake too. Even better, share it with a friend for a lasting feel-good effect.

CANBERRA 2019Breanna & Alessia from Room 12 share their experience.

Recently, some of the Year 6/7 students had the amazing opportunity to go to Canberra.

We woke up really early to get to the airport at 7:00am to board the plane at 9:00 am. We soon found out that our flight was going to be delayed for four hours because of the bad weather in Sydney. This was surprisingly fun because we got to hang around at the airport with our friends and because our flight was delayed, we all got a voucher for $8.00 to spend on whatever food we liked! Finally, we boarded the plane to go to Melbourne instead of Sydney and from there went on to Canberra. After several hours, we finally got there!

Our first activity was to visit the Mount Ainslie Lookout on the way to the lodge. It was really pretty because the sun was setting and we could see both the old and new parliament houses. We took lots of photos then headed off to the lodge and settled in to our dorms.

The next day we went to the new Parliament House and learned a lot about politics. We found it really interesting and educational. Later that night we went to Questacon where we learned all about science, it was really exciting because there were a lot of hands-on activities.

The following day we went to the old Parliament House, which was also really fun because we got to work on touch screen tv’s and we voted on our favourite fruits. After that we went to the National Museum where we learned about agriculture and the indigenous people of our country, we also learned how people survived in the old days and we saw Farlaps heart (which was huge!) Later we went to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and we learned about Australian athletes and Paralympian’s.

Finally, on the last day we boarded our plane to Melbourne and then from there back home to Adelaide where our families were waiting. It was an amazing trip but it felt good to be home once again.

Karin’s Corner

Hi everyone,Just thought I’d touch on something that affects us no matter what age, group or family we belong to, PEER PRESSURE! When we think about it, it can be seen as a negative thing, but it can also help and influence us in a positive way. I guess the key is discerning which influences are preferable, especially when it comes to our children.Peer groups help develop friendships, a sense of belonging, increase confidence to try new activities and experiences, teaches us to give and take and can provide a safe place to take positive risks. There are also times where we see the peer group having a negative effect on our kids. When we see our children spending increased time with friends, you can feel like you’re losing your voice in your children’s lives, they may begin doing things they wouldn’t normally be involved in, ignoring the family values you have instilled. What to do?? The most important thing is to keep communication open, even if the subject seems delicate. Encourage them to spend time with different people too, discuss how they could say “No” to certain situations, be a friend friendly house, make a space in your home so the friends can come and hang out at your place. Setting clear house rules/consequences together helps to make them feel they are part of the decision making, doing this gives them ownership of the rules and consequences. Above all, show your child you care and are interested in their lives.

I will have some parenting fact sheets on this subject at reception and in the Gorge Building notice board for more tips and information about Peer pressure.

All the best,

Karin Williams PCW

Easy Healthy Lunch Boxes in 3 Steps

Some mum’s think I am mad when I tell them I love packing lunch boxes. Some say they find it stressful, some hard work and others say it’s simple because they pack the same each day. My tip for making the task of packing healthy lunch boxes easy is to build yourself a Lunch Box Map each week. Here’s how:

1. INVOLVE THE KIDS IN CHOICESAsk your kids what healthy snacks, fruit and vegetables they would like in their lunch box this week. This simple tip gets their buy-in and helps ensure your lunch boxes get eaten.

2. CHOOSE 2 OF EACHI suggest ask your kids to choose at least 2 healthy snacks, 2 fruits and 2 vegetables. Then you can rotate them so it’s different from the day before and you can include as much colour as possible (remember, different colour fruits and vegetables help your child’s body in different ways).

3. MAIN LUNCH FOODIf you are pack sandwiches each day, map out a couple of different fillings, and maybe choose 1 day to go sandwich free. If you don’t pack sandwiches, map out what main lunches you’ll pack.

IDEAS• For ideas, see my Facebook Page (http://rootcau.se/fb)

for my Lunch Box Map for this week.• To make packing lunch boxes super easy, you can go

one step further and map out what you will pack each day.
