Toastmasters International Where Leaders are Made

Toastmasters International unveiled its refreshed brand on August 17, 2011. Since that date, I’ve seen and heard many comments about the new brand. Some were positive and some were not so good. I encourage every member to review the history of the Toastmasters brand to see how much work was involved in the process.

Toastmasters recognized the need for a brand refreshing in 2008 and preliminary discussions were held in 2009. Branding agencies were researched and interviewed and in November 2009, a company by the name of Innovation Protocol was selected. Many of their employees are current or former Toastmasters.

The agency partner Innovation Protocol spent several months researching Toastmasters. They did the following:

· Talked with members, District leaders, board members, potential members and guests of Toastmasters Clubs

· Reviewed Toastmasters materials· Attended conferences, club meetings and Club Officer trainings· Researched the competition

Research revealed that the Toastmasters brand was lost. While Toastmasters encourages club and district individuality, they also encourage us to communicate a consistent message around the world. Many districts had their own banners and logos, adding to the inconsistency of the Toastmasters brand.

The Toastmasters logo was changed and you may ask why it was necessary to change the globe emblem. Continents were removed to equally represent the 116 countries where Toastmasters meet. The globe represents worldwide presence and the tilt of the latitude and longitude lines implies motion. The globe emblem will always be a part of Toastmasters. It is used as a seal on the backs of manuals and other official documents.

For more details on the new brand, visit the brand portal at www.toastmasters.org/vbp/ to access newly branded templates and resources to help your club refresh its materials.

Our responsibility as members is to reinforce the new brand through consistency in our Clubs. This means, updating agendas, websites, letterheads and business cards. Badges and pins are now different so when you order these items from Toastmasters International, you will receive the newly branded material.

Think about how Toastmasters has helped you then share with your Clubs and with our District PRO Tony Longley at [email protected]. We would love to print your story in the next edition of the Sunshiner. Kind Regards, Pamela D. Rolle, DTM District 47 Governor2

POSITIONING  STATEMENT

I  wasn’t  born  a  leader.    They  were  all  around  me  though.  In  the  community,  at  work,  at  school.  Leaders  were  everywhere.  They  were  the  heads  of  families,  coaches  of  teams,  business  leaders,  mentors,  organizaFonal  decision-‐makers.

I  admired  these  leaders.  They  influenced  who  I  was  and  who  I  was  becoming  because  I  aspired  to  walk  in  their  footsteps.

And,  so,  I  commiJed  myself  to  becoming  one.

Finally,  it  came  to  me.  It  wasn’t  just  what  leaders  knew  that  enabled  them  to  lead.    They  had  a  voice.  They  could  tell  their  story.  They  could  listen  and  answer.  They  didn’t  just  accomplish,  they  communicated.

So  I  set  out  to  find  my  voice.  Learn  to  process  ideas  in  the  midst  of  discussion.  Train  myself  to  listen  aJenFvely.  Learn  to  give  feedback  –  and  accept  it.  I  needed  to  organize,  plan,  deliver  and  follow  up.  I  needed  a  place  where  all  the  ingredients  were  available,  and  someone  would  guide  me  along  the  way.

I  found  that  place.  I  found  a  community  of  learners  and  the  path  to  leadership.

I  am  a  leader  –  and  I  was  made.

District 47 was conspicuous in its representation at the 80th Annual Toastmasters International Convention, held in Las Vegas, Nevada in mid-August. The delegation, numbering almost 20 Toastmasters, was led by “The FAB 5”as they are affectionately known. The “FAB 5” is comprised of: Distinguished Toastmasters All, Pamela D. Rolle, District Governor; Lt. Governor Education & Training-East, Matt Kinsey; Lt. Governor Education & Training-West, Kathy Furbush; Lt. Governor Marketing-East, Hieu Huynh and Lt. Governor Marketing-West, Ron Rice. The “FAB 5” heads the top tier of the District’s Executive Committee which also includes, District PRO Anthony Longley, DTM; District Treasurer TM Anthony Richiez, District Secretary, TM Susan Phelps and Immediate Past District Governor, Rick Furbush, DTM. Longley, Richiez and Furbush also attended the convention as well as several Division and Area Governors and several D-47 club officers.

It was a busy agenda for the group, especially the FAB 5 whose intense schedule started on Monday, two days before the official start of the convention. They all attended their mandatory two days of District Officers Training. Additionally, on Wednesday District Governor Rolle and Treasurer Richiez attended a special training session for District Treasurers and DG’s. That same morning, the ‘FAB 5’ attended the Branding Workshop to become familiar with all aspects of the brand refresh. Then later that evening, the whole group attended the official opening ceremonies where District Governor, Pamela D. Rolle was a proud

flag bearer. She had the honor of carrying the Bahamian flag before a packed audience during the Parade of Flags. Thursday morning was “the moment of truth”, the main event that we lived for...The Hall of

Fame. The strategy was to have a few persons there very early to block off our seating area. To the envy of some and the admiration of others, the team moved in unison the whole week. The short time lapse seemed like hours before we heard the Clarion call…“President’s Distinguished District; #6 in the World, District 47!” To a thunderous applause, the team made its way to the stage and strutted proudly across. The famous large, sunny yellow banner was stretched wide, revealing the latest inscription, President’s Distinguished; ‘#6 In the World’. Then of course there were the individual awards. Our former LGET, Pamela D. Rolle received the Excellence in Education & Training Award, while former LGM, Matt Kinsey received the Excellence in

Marketing Award from International President, Pat Johnson.

In the afternoon, all corridors led to the education session conducted by Karen Baetzel, District 47, Area 54 Governor. Despite the packed room, the team became Karen’s personal cheer leading squad.

On Thursday evening, the D-47 cheerleading squad, which by now had grown in numbers, attended the International Speech Contest Semi-Finals in support of Shawn Purvis,

District 47’s representative in the contest. Shawn competed in Round 8 and was speaker #9. He gave a winning performance to everyone’s delight. Unfortunately however, Shawn was KO’d by the clock. He went a few seconds overtime and was therefore, disqualified. This did not dampen our spirits; we are extremely proud of Shawn for his effort.

On Friday, the morning sun had barely begun to illuminate the Las Vegas strip when the team’s schedule kicked off with the Candidates Showcase. Since Monday, the FAB 5 were busy interviewing candidates vying for positions on the Toastmasters International Board. These were done by appointments, which in some cases DG Rolle had scheduled weeks in advance of arriving in Las Vegas. A happy District Governor Rolle had this to say: "This is the reason your clubs’ proxies were so important. I wish to thank all clubs who responded to the call to assign club proxies. Due to your overwhelming response, District 47 had a 'strong voice' at Saturday’s business meeting."

Friday’s agenda ended with the Golden Gavel dinner. This year’s recipient of the Golden Gavel Award was Leadership & Management Expert, Robin Sharma.

Saturday was another early start with the

5

International Speech Contest Finals at 8:00 AM. The winner with rights to the title, ‘2011 World Champion of Public Speaking’ is Jock Elliott, District 69, Australia. The team then attended the Region 8 meeting and participated in the roast of outgoing International Director, Pamela Christopher DTM. District Governor Pamela D. Rolle presented her namesake Pamela with a gift as a token of appreciation on behalf of District 47. In the afternoon, we attended the annual business meeting where we assisted in electing the new Board of Directors of Toastmasters International.

The rigorous but exciting week closed out on Saturday night with the grand affair… The President’s Dinner Dance. The team, all adorned in the hottest fashions, was present and accounted for at this gala event. Following the fabulous dinner and all of the formalities, it was time for dancing… and then there was more dancing. In fact, some (who shall remain nameless) literally went from the dance floor straight to the airport for the early Sunday morning ‘red eye’ flight.

Sounds like fun, right? Well, by now you’re probably saying, “Wow what a great time I missed!” The good news is… you don’t have to miss it next year. Begin planning now to join the huge District 47 contingent that will be in Orlando Florida next year when we hope to be recognized as ‘President’s Distinguished; #1 in the world!’

Can you have a successful

event without raffles or door

prizes? Yes, you can!

Last April 9th, then Area

42 Governor Cindy Beckles,

hosted a Public Speaking

Seminar at the Wellington

Palm Beach library featuring Barry Rinehart and

Umar Farooq. Umar Farooq provided an awesome

presentation on “Table Topics” and Barry Rinehart

spoke on from “Ah to Amen”. Barry Rinehart’s speech

truly inspired people to be better speakers and to

reach out and make a difference.

The goal of the event was simply to provide a

community service. The amazing results however, were

unexpected. Several attendees attended subsequent

local Toastmasters meetings and three people even

became new members. The library event was a great

way for people to see how they could overcome their

fears and concerns about public speaking.

Part of the event’s success was the unconventional

structure. Participants were selected for Table Topics

via a random drawing followed by panel feedback.

This was a unique way to do Table Topics. Jerry

Frenz, who attended the event as a guest, mustered

the courage to place his name in consideration for

Table Topics. He is now a member of the Wellington

Toastmasters club. This format allowed anyone in the

audience to potentially be a participant.

In addition, Norma Winter and Brad Johnson were

both selected to participate in Table Topics and the

valuable feedback they received inspired them to join

Toastmasters. Both Norma and Brad were challenged

and had difficulty beginning their responses. You

could literally feel the crowd rooting for them and

encouraging them to try. Once they spoke, each of

them received priceless individual feedback from

the panelists. The feedback from the panelists

encouraged them to work on their public speaking

skills. It is ironic that so many Toastmasters do Table

Topics weekly, but rarely get feedback. Most people

want to know what do well and obtain suggestions of

how they can improve.

The new members have even gone to earn awards. For

example, Brad Johnson, who has joined the RiverWalk

Toastmasters, has won Best Speaker and Best

Evaluator a few times. He also recently won both the

RiverWalk Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contests.

Not bad for this beginner. Also, Norma recently won

Best Speaker at Wellington three times and Best Table

Topics at RiverWalk. She was recently a contestant

in the Riverwalk Toastmasters’ Evaluation contest.

Norma has done four speeches during the last three

months and served as Toastmaster. Meanwhile, Jerry

Frenz has already given two fantastic speeches, and

recently won the Wellington Toastmasters’ Evaluation

Contest.

Get inspired and hold a community event like this. You

can introduce new people to Toastmasters and grow

your club. You never know how you can change a life,

by letting a person see the potential that lies within.

I had the privilege of being the Evaluation Contest Test Speaker during the Boca Raton Toastmasters Club’s Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests held on August 9, 2011. It was a rainy Tuesday night in Boca Raton. Jerry Fernandez, who is a member of the Boca Raton Toastmasters (also Area 43 Governor), had asked for a volunteer. I’m so glad I did!

I got a chance to see a dynamic and very well organized club-sponsored event. Contest Chair, Michele Guarino publicized this contest so well that they had a full house. I could have sworn there were about eighty people, but Michele tells me that she counted about fifty-five. Whatever the number, their enthusiasm made it seem like a hundred people!

Kris Dawkins, the Contest Master, was perfect in his first-time role. He did an amazing job with his welcoming personality and good humor. The five humorous speakers were truly funny, and my five evaluators were uniformly excellent. This event was a team effort… and it showed!

What did I learn that can be useful to Palm Beach Noon Toastmasters Club? • Publicizing such an event is crucial. • It’s a team effort. • Such successful events can increase a club’s membership.• The more people… the more fun. • You can’t leave anything to chance; that’s wishful thinking. Planning, publicity, and

execution are crucial. What I learned as an individual Toastmaster:

• Being an Evaluation Test Speaker at an Evaluation Contest gives you an amazing opportunity to learn from numerous evaluations offering multiple perspectives.

• You learn about mannerisms you may not be aware of.• You get ideas for new openings and closings.• You receive suggestions about movement and gestures.• You get many different perspectives from accomplished speakers.• You get confirmation of your strengths, as well as how you come across to different

audiences.• You get to hear other accomplished speakers, the contestants. You get a real energy boost.

If you want to gain the maximum benefit from being a Toastmaster, volunteering to be an Evaluation Test Speaker is one good way to begin. If by chance it’s a rainy night, do it anyway… you’ll be glad you did!

Doctor Prescribes 8 Doses of ‘YLP’ for Pembroke Pines KidsBy: Anthony (Tony) Longley, District 47 PRO

After seeing a promotional blitz sent out by District 47 in early 2011 about the Toastmasters International Youth Leadership Program (YLP), TM Bhaskar Karumanchi of Pembroke Pines Toastmasters Club #6003 knew immediately that this is something she would really enjoy doing. So, she contacted the then District 47, YLP Chair for East Coast and The Bahamas, Anthony (Tony) Longley, DTM to learn more about what’s involved and how to get started as a YLP Coordinator. With the “how to” information in hand… she felt she was ready! Her target group would be children who reside within her housing development complex, Pembroke Isles. Their parents are members of the Home Owners Association (HOA), so this would be easy, she thought. TM Bhaskar Karumanchi, who is also affectionately referred to as ‘Dr. K’, is actually, Dr. Bhaskar Karumanchi, M.D., a renowned Anesthesiologist by profession, now retired. ‘Dr. K’, said, “I faced numerous challenges, from parental concerns to the disappointing numbers by some children not showing up and personal health issues. Yes, I felt discouraged many times but… I never gave up!” She continued, “What was particularly encouraging was the support of the HOA President, Mr. Roberts, who gave approval for the use of the club house.”

Finally, on April 16, 2011 with 14 students, ages mostly ranging from 13 to 16, ‘Dr. K’ started her YLP. Two of the participants were only 11 years of age but they were matured, gifted children and were eager to learn and explore new horizons so she allowed them in. During the 8 weeks program, it was an amazing experience to watch the metamorphosis of these once bashful and in some cases, introverted kids opened up like new petals on a flower. “It’s crazy how fast the weeks can go by when you’re having so much fun!” Says; ‘Dr. K.’

It was now time to plan the final session. The date was set… June 11, 2011. It was decided that each participant would present a speech to display their newly acquired skills for the parents and friends. Invites were communicated to parents and supporters. Mr. Lou Roberts, the HOA President and Distinguished Toastmaster Longley, the Keynote Speaker who resides in The Bahamas were the Guests of Honor. Following the speeches, the participants got a chance to display their analytical skills by evaluating their colleagues. In his keynote address, DTM Longley told the students, “You should never give up and must be willing to accept the responsibility for everything you do, no matter the outcome… good or bad!” He said, “The world has room for more great leaders and effective communicators.” YLP coordinator, ‘Dr. K’ gave remarks and thanked the participants, sponsors and supporters. She also recognized Pembroke Pines Club President, Luis Velez for the club’s sponsorship of the YLP participants’ handbooks and TM. Stuart Perez, her Assistant Coordinator.

‘Dr. K’ said, she is an avid Toastmaster whose greatest passion is participating in Toastmasters and earning Educational Awards. TM Bhaskar Karumanchi said, “I feel proud that I have earned my ACG ALB and I’m privileged to now be serving as the Area 24 Governor in Division B with Jeanine Kinsey, DTM – Division Governor. I am also extremely motivated by the outstanding leadership of Pamela D. Rolle, DTM – District 47 Governor. I’m inspired by her example so, I strive to do the best I can! ‘Doctor K’ summed it all up this way… “The YLP is the best prescription I’ve ever given!”

TM Bhaskar ‘Dr. K’ Karumanchi receives YLP Coordinator’s Certificate from 2010-11 YLP Chair, Tony Longley, DTM. At left is, Pembroke Pines Club President, Luis Velez; at right is, TM. Stuart Perez, her Assistant Coordinator.

(Standing) YLP Graduates with Tony Longley, Keynote Speaker & YLP Chair; Mr. Lou Roberts, HOA President (far Left) & Pembroke Pines Club President, Luis Velez & Mr. Winston Freire, Club House Chairman, Pembroke Isles Housing Development (far rgt).

A Toast to a Club’s Success By: Atul Khungar|VP - Public Relations|Sensor Toast, Toastmasters

The name, Sensor Toast Toastmasters Club may suggest that it is a corporate club but it’s actually open to anyone. We have over 30 registered members. Our average attendance is about 15 members per meeting. Our motto is, “Home of Champions”. Our club has had a contestant finish in one of the top three positions in each Area 44 contest starting from September 2007 through February 2011. We recently held our Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contests, with 4 evaluation contestants and 5 humorous speech contestants. This is the largest number we’ve ever had competing in our club’s history. Competition was fierce! Good luck to Michael Thorn (our evaluation contest winner) and Atul Khungar (our humorous speech contest winner) as they advance to the upcoming Area 44 contests on Friday September 9! We look forward to both of them continuing our Home of Champions tradition!

The year ending 6/30/2011 was a record breaking year for our club since we accomplished all 10 DCP points for the first time ever in our club’s history! Due to the guidance of our Immediate Past President Linda Magness and other club officers, we had well-organized meetings with superb manual speeches, original table topics, and meaningful evaluations. Together, these standards led to the accomplishment of our goals. We earned 4 new competent communicators, 2 advanced communicators, and 2 competent leaders. Due to our warm and supportive club environment, we had more than 10 new members join during the year. In addition, most of our club officers were trained at both Toastmaster leadership Institute workshops held during the year. The dues section of our club’s website enabled us to ensure that notices were sent to all members and resulted in all dues being paid in a timely manner during the year. We are looking forward to another record breaking year by again accomplishing 10 DCP points! Keep your meetings well organized and exciting and your members will remain enthused. Then, after June 30, 2012, your club will also have good reasons to… CELEBRATE!

So, raise your glasses District 47 and join ‘Sensor’ in a ‘Toast’ to its success… CHEERS!

Sensor Toast Toastmasters club meets on Wednesdays from 12:05 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at TYCO 6600 Congress Avenue in Boca Raton, FL. You’re welcomed to join us!

Growing Up!By: Susan Slate, Plantation Toastmasters

As we grow and mature our lives become more fruitful, but alas, more complicated. It’s hard not to think back to the things that were GREAT about being a kid. Hopefully reading my favorites will trigger a few of your own.

Here goes:

Staying home from school sick and having mom feed me tomato soup & ginger ale

First day of summer vacation – riding bikes to the pool with my brother

Playing Marco Polo in the pool until our parents couldn’t stand it anymore

Lying in bed on Sat morning, hearing the lawnmower and smelling the fresh cut grass

Playing school (and I stress the word playing)

Staying up late when my parents had a party

First new puppy

Sunday night TV – ED Sullivan, Disney, Bonanza

Getting dropped off at the mall with a friend for two hours and having $10.00 to spend on whatever I want

Riding to U-Tote-Um on my boyfriend’s bike handlebars & getting an orange wax whistle

Of course the biggest thing about being a kid was having no responsibilities and no worries. It has been said a million times, but bears repeating: “If only we knew then, what we know now!” It’s lovely to reflect on the past and happy times, but dangerous to dwell there. One of the hardest parts of life (for me) has always been “living in the moment”. Every day is a new opportunity to make new “firsts” and new memories to reflect on later. While we should never stop growing, we also should never fully let go of the kid in us!

I will leave you with a quote from Dale Carnegie:

“One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon - instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today.”

Keep growing up!

Susan Slate

Getting a DTM is Easier Than…By: Louis Brown, Area 44 Governor

Are you working to achieve that ultimate Toastmasters goal of DTM? Getting all those speeches presented, projects accomplished and having it all signed off by the VPE. I am diligently working towards my DTM which appears totally less daunting than the professional credentials I have recently earned. I am now officially a FCAS.

FCAS is not a new spa technique, nor is it an acronym for remembering passwords, it represents – Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. This is the highest level to be earned for insurance representatives pursuing an actuarial designation. The process for becoming FCAS certified includes 9 exams, each requiring approximately 400 hours of study. Considerably less time is needed to get that DTM.The Society passes only 30-40% of the candidates each exam sitting and it is not uncommon for an individual to fail a particular exam several times before passing. So you can imagine my joy and relief upon the news I had indeed passed the exam. Good thing there are no tests at Toastmasters! However, like Toastmasters there is a conference in November which will be held in Chicago. The President of the Society will confer a degree on all new Fellows, of which I will be one. More information about the Society can be found on the web site: www.casact.org.

Now about that DTM. More information on all the educational programs and how to earn your DTM can be found on www.toastmaster.org. I encourage you to further your personal and professional education; it increases your career eligibility, your confidence and your spirits! Now, while you’re at it… why not pursue that DTM the same time. Follow my lead and you’ll find that it’s a lot easier than… you may think!

Louis M. Brown, ACB, ALBArea 44 Governor

International Convention First Timer First time convention attendee, Lydia Harris, Area 25 Governor, took full advantage of the networking opportunities at the 80th Annual International Convention held in Las Vegas.

As a member of the District Delegation, Lydia seized every chance to meet new people and build new friendships. “I wanted the real convention experience!” she said.

In these photos, Lydia is seen with some of her new found friends.

Dualing Areas!By: Matt Siewert, Area 35 Governor

A DUAL Area Contest was held on September 13, 2011 in Tampa, Florida presented by Area 34 and Area 35. This combined Dual Area Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest served a DUAL purpose. The combined Area contest selected respective winners of Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests to advance to the Division C contest on October 8, but this event also served as a donations drive and fund raiser for Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa, Florida - a non-profit organization that helps families in crisis and the homeless.

A volunteer Executive Chef prepared fancy high-end dinners for attendees who pre-purchased in advance, via the online event registration at www.ToastmastersD47.org. All the proceeds from this amazing meal went to an equally amazing cause - providing “Boxes of Hope” filled with nutritious food to feed a family in crisis for three days.

Speech Contest Admission was FREE with a donated good will item to Metropolitan Ministries. Typical goodwill items include: Canned Foods, Non-Perishable Foods, Shoes, Clothes, Books, Hygiene and Bath Supplies e.g. Soap/shampoo/shaving cream etc., Backpacks, School supplies and anything that will help a family in need.

This was a WIN-WIN event for both Metropolitan Ministries and for local Tampa Toastmasters clubs. Metropolitan Ministries provided an exceptional venue for the Area Speech Contests. Their kitchen and Chef were available for preparing the dinners and Toastmasters from Area 34 and Area 35 were able to do something great for the Tampa community while executing on the best Speech Contest Event that Tampa has ever seen.

PMI + TM = PDU & DCPBy: Matt Siewert, Area 35 Governor

Tampa Bay Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) in partnership with Toastmasters in the Tampa Bay area, District 47, is happy to announce a brand NEW program offering educational credits to Project Management Professional (PMP) accredited with the PMP certification. The new program follows a very successful “Pilot” program organized and established at the JPMC Highlanders Toastmasters Club #680990 at J.P. Morgan Chase in Tampa, Florida. The program was born as a High Performance Leadership project led by Matt Siewert, Area 35 Governor and immediate past President of JPMC Highlanders Club. A team of unbelievably helpful Toastmasters and PMP’s, so dedicated to this cause that without them this would not have been possible.

• These persons deserve the HIGHEST praise: • Claudia Bryant, PMP, CC, CL - JPMC Highlanders Past VPE• Adam Hsu, PMP, CC - JPMC Highlanders President• Janice Murray, PMP - PMI-TB VP of Strategic Projects• James Lightfoot, DTM - PMI TB Director of Community Outreach

As part of this new program, any PMP who is a member of PMI-Tampa Bay (PMI-TB) and who also belongs to a Toastmasters club in the Tampa Bay area registered with the local PMI will be able to take advantage of earning Professional Development Units (PDU) with Toastmasters roles at the Toastmaster club meetings. Not only will the Project Management Institute benefit, this collaboration will also benefit the Toastmasters Clubs in the long run as a result of increased CC and CL manual completions and this means… more DCP points! So you see… it’s a ‘win win’ formula!

The bi-product, of course, is that the individual member attains his or her goals in the process. Don’t forget, in Toastmasters the member is where it truly counts! Additionally, these continuing Professional Development Units (continuing education credits) help the PMP keep up with their license requirements of continued education. Meanwhile, with the proven Toastmasters method of hands-on practice, the PMP’s will hone their important communication skills within the communications knowledge area emphasized with their PMP certification. The Roll-Out of this new partnership PDU program will be officially announced at the 7th Annual PMI-Tampa Bay (PMI-TB)

Symposium on September 23/24, 2011, sponsored by:

MICROSOFT Corporation - www.microsoft.com

INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE for LEARNING - www.iil.com

UMT Project Consulting - www.umt.com

TRIBRIDGE IT Consulting - http://www.tribridge.com/...and many others such as DeVry University, TEK

Systems, Marriott ExecuStay, APEX Systems, Incepture, EPM Live.

The 7th Annual PMI-TB Symposium will be held at the HYATT Regency Tampa, 211 N. Tampa Street, Tampa, FL 33602. For more information on the PMI-TB Symposium please visit:

A Toastmasters booth will be present at the Symposium for the purpose of distributing promotional materials on Toastmasters and answering questions to attendees interested in learning more about the program. Details of the successful “Pilot” program currently running at the JPMC Highlanders club at JP Morgan Chase which will be the model used for all of Tampa Bay, are detailed online at: http://JPMCHLO.freetoasthost.net

Who are District 47 Leaders Today?

Only five of these babies serve as leaders for District 47. Can you identify the leaders?

Hint: They might be Area and Division Governors, members of the FAB FIVE, or then again, they might be committee chairs.

Woman in action:

T O P AT T O A S T-MASTERS: Rachel Fer-guson is chief of Toast-masters in the country

She wants her students to achieve success!

IT takes a special and dedicated individual to walk through the doors of the Erin H Gilmour School for the Blind to teach chil-dren, particularly not knowing the first thing about Braille.

In 2003, teacher Rachel Fergu-son was transferred to the school, after being in the education field for just two years. It was unfamiliar ter-ritory. And she was a rookie teacher back then. However, the unwaver-ing Rachel has always been one who believes in facing her giants.

up,” she states. Presently, Rachel is posted as a grade one teacher at EP Roberts Primary School.

This is her second stint in a regu-lar classroom, having taught grade two students at Columbus Primary School between 2001 and 2003.

Teaching is something she im-mensely enjoys. And she has not regretted her 10 years of service thus far. In fact, Rachel notes that her greatest passion is ensuring that all her students achieve success.

“I want this for all of my students, despite their diverse abilities,” says the educator whose ambition is one day to open her own institution that caters to students with various learning disabilities.

She also aspires to own a tutor-ing and homework centre. “I love to know that I contribute towards creating effective leaders for our country,” she says.

“I did not know how to write or read Braille. But being the deter-mined individual I am, I learned how to write and read grade one Braille in my first year at the school,” says the steadfast young woman.

Rachel remained with her blind students for seven years, teach-ing grades 2 through 5. Today, she not only can read, write and teach Braille, but she feels fulfilled, having seeded into the lives of those special youth. They still hold a special place in her heart and have taught her numerous invaluable lessons.

“My students taught me to be thankful for what I have because I have seen some of them brought to tears because they were unable to see their environment. However, they still tried to cope and not give

FAB FERGUSONout the country. “I want to see The Bahamas Division I of Toastmasters as the No.1 Division in District 47, which includes The Bahamas and South Florida,” says Rachel.

With the help of a focused and organised team, this is possible as Rachel already knows the taste of success in the Toastmasters’ circles. “I have served as a President’s Dis-tinguished Club President 2007–2008 and as a President’s Distinguished Area Governor 2008 – 2009. I have also served as Assistant Division Governor for Education and Train-ing, Toastmasters Leadership Insti-tute Chair for Bahamas Division I.

“I had to organise the entire of-ficers’ training which meant that I had to get presenters for all sessions and organise refreshments. This is in addition to being District Contest Chair, having to ensure that all clubs throughout South Florida and The Bahamas had the materials needed to conduct their contests throughout the Toastmasters’ year,” she notes.

Serving in such positions allowed Rachel to hone her leadership and communication skills. “I consider myself an effective organiser: I am a good listener. And my interpersonal skills are very effective,” she states.

Besides such skills, Rachel’s de-termination is certainly amongst her crowning glories. Once she puts her mind to achieve a goal, she is reso-lute in doing just that. She recalls her target to obtain a Bachelor’s degree.

By PUNCH Feature Writer

However, all she had was hope and a dream. “In January 1999, I did not have the funds to go away to college. Neither did my parents. But we went to the bank and were able to secure all the fees needed to complete my Bachelor’s degree,” she states.

Today, Rachel is a graduate of the College of Saint Benedict in Min-nesota, having secured a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Educa-tion. Rachel gives credit to her par-ents, Jeffrey and Ulean Ferguson, for the indomitable spirit she has.

The grateful Rachel says: “My parents are my biggest cheerlead-ers, always reminding me that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I am proud to have them as my parents.

“Spending quality time with my parents and siblings always brings a smile to my face,” says Rachel, who is the sibling of brothers, Wel-lington and Javis Ferguson and four sisters, Levaughn and Ulease Ferguson, Fearlease Wallace and Kevita Green. They too have proven

to be loyal in their support to her. Rachel, who is a proud member

of Mount Tabor Full Gospel Baptist Church, adds that her spiritual leader, Bishop Neil C Ellis is also a great inspiration to her life.

Meantime, although Rachel leads the charge for local Toastmasters, she finds time at school to work on several committees including the Professional Development and Academic Committee, Graduation Committee, Special Events/Fund Raising Committee and Parental Involvement Committee. This is in addition to being a volunteer at The Ranfurly Home for Children and a Girl Guides’ Leader.

As a member of each commit-tee, Rachel believes in contributing to its success. Rachel deems it not good enough simply to occupy a chair, but rather be a contributor to a worthy cause. She is a firm believer of chemist and author, Battista’s quote: Success is knowing what you are doing (and) loving and believing in what you are doing.

skills which Rachel has instilled in her students are evident in her own life. She is the 29th Division Gov-ernor for Bahamas Division I of Toastmasters International.

Having secured this position in April 2011 is certainly evidence of Rachel’s persistence, as she was unsuccessful at her first attempt for the post. Nevertheless, she is now the chief of all Toastmasters through-

The dining room is inviting. There is an aquarium at the front entrance with an interesting selection of fish. During our night at Double Dragon, my guest and I were seated by a handsome waiter, who later returned to take our orders. While awaiting his return, we studied the Chinese zo-diac signs on our place-mats. They tell your per-sonality according to the year in which you were born. Interestingly, my guest and I were deemed compatible

according to the signs, which got our night off to a good start.

We shared a combi-nation platter. And my date ordered chicken noodle soup, egg roll and sweet n’ sour chick-en. I was in the mood for something spicy with a

lot of vegetables. The waiter recommended the Kung Pao Chicken, served with white rice. It was just as good as I thought it would be.

It was chicken in a spicy sauce with lots of exotic herbs and vegeta-bles including broccoli, carrots, peanuts and water chestnuts.

My guest enjoyed his meal and within mo-ments had wiped his plate clean—a difficult feat considering that the portion served was quite large. For dessert we enjoyed slices of lovely cheesecake and

WENCE Martin and Donaliquea Francis

are winners of the Baha-mas @ Sunrise Dream Wedding Promotion.

On September 16, Baha-mas @ Sunrise will broad-cast Wence and Donal-iquea’s wedding live during its 6:30am broadcast on ZNS TV. The ceremony takes place at the British Colonial Hilton. And every aspect of the wedding—from rings, to invitations, to bridal gown—will be decided by Bahamas @ Sunrise’s TV viewers.

Several Bahamian com-

panies—Floral Arts, Jewels by the Seas, Fabric Genies, Gigi The Artist, Vivienne Lockhart Cakes, Template, British Colonial Hilton, Buttons Bridal & Formal Wear, and Lashan—are working to make this dream wedding possible.

“This is an adventure. We’ve been enjoying the ride,” Donaliquea shared.

“Most of our stress, espe-cially the financial concerns related to wedding budg-eting and planning, have been reduced. Persons have made favourable selections thus far—we especially like

the rings, décor and invita-tions chosen. We are praying for the choice of an exotic honeymoon location.”

Donaliquea added: “The reality of winning the Dream Wedding Promotion and having our wedding aired live for everyone to watch, has still not sunk in. Let’s see what happens on Septem-ber 16. We would have liked to invite our supporters, fam-ily and friends to the wed-ding. But due to constraints, we are unable to do so.

“But we invite them to view our wedding on ZNS on September 16.”

HAPPY COUPLE: Wence and Donaliquea will be married live on the TV show Bahamas @ Sunrise on September 16

Double Dragon cooks to orderDINE in or take out at Double Dragon. This Chinese restaurant serves up some of the best Oriental cuisine Nassau has to offer the city’s hungry diners.

For dessert we enjoyed slices of lovely cheesecake and

chocolate cake. And we ended the evening with a small sweet treat of fortune cookies.

Other delightful en-trees on Double Drag-on’s menu include: chicken wings, pepper chicken and steak, Lo Mein, Szechaun chick-en and a host of others. A full-service bar is also located in the res-taurant. All dishes are cooked to order.

They are open Mon-day Thursday: 12noon- l0pm; Saturday: 4pm-11pm. Dinner for two with drinks: $40.

Family, Friends & Fellow TMs of Neil S. Percentie:

Neil Sean Percentie, AKA "100 Percentie" was fatally shot in an incident in Nassau on the evening of Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the age of 35. He was an active member of his home club, First Bahamas Branch, Toastmasters Club 1600, a Past President of Club 9477 and was this year's Treasurer of Advanced Club 7108. He was a well respected political activist who kept many sitting politicians "on their toes" which resulted in additional nicknames such as "Mayor" & "Senator". Neil was known as a fun loving, "life of the party" type of guy whose deep, thunderous laughter could cause the floor to vibrate. He was a community leader, philanthropist and a benefactor to the underprivileged. His loyalty to loved ones and his sense of commitment earned him his tag name "100 Percentie" by his TM brothers in Club 1600. The club meeting on Sept. 8 took the form of a memorial tribute and it was decided that the first meeting in September each year be dubbed, Neil Percentie's Night. Funeral services are planned for Saturday September 17, 2011 in Nassau.

Family & Friends of Victims of the Tragedy on 9/11:

Our thoughts, meditations and prayers are extended to the families and friends of the 3000 plus victims, whose lives were changed in a wink on that faithful morning of September 11, 2001. So many loved ones were either lost or left severely scarred. On that day, the world came to a virtual standstill. The resulting affects were felt physically, emotionally, psychologically and economically, on a global level. To our members who were personally impacted, please know that your District 47 family stands with you now and always as you reflect upon the memories of those whom you lost but will always love!

The Mission of the District is to enhance the performance and extend the network of clubs, thereby offering greater numbers of people the opportunity to benefit from the Toastmasters educational program by:

• Focusing on the critical success factors as specified by the district educational and membership goals.

• Ensuring that each club effectively fulfills its responsibilities to its members.

• Providing effective training and leadership development opportunities for club and district officers.
