For 3 successive years, District 47 has the distinction of attaining President’s Distinguished District status. This is a first for our District and only surpassed in the history of Toastmasters by districts that span an entire country like India and China.

What an incredible accomplishment by our entire District (leaders and members alike). You have made the difference and should be very proud! Here are a few facts you should record:

1. We finished #6 in the World this year, #2 last year and #5 the year before.

District 47

Makes History!

2. We led the world of Toastmasters with the most CCs all 3 years.3. We had more ACs and Leadership awards than any other District for the last 2 years.4. We started more than 100 new clubs in these 3 years.5. We expanded so quickly since our last split that after just 3 years, we split again!6. Our 9 Divisions performed admirably with 8 President’s Distinguished and 1 Select Distinguished Division.

I am grateful to my mentors, Past District Governors Kristina Kihlberg and Antionette Fox who led by example and took our District to President’s Distinguished in the preceding two years.

It was fun working closely with current District Governor, Pamela Rolle and current LGET East, Matt Kinsey who together were the driving force that propelled us on our way to this historical year for District 47. They were invaluable to the District but especially to me. Simply put, we had the BEST DEC on the Planet! Sincere thanks to our entire District Executive Committee (DEC), which includes our Immediate Past District Governor Kristina Kihlberg, all Division and Area Governors, our District Secretary Lori Stephens, Treasurer Jim Ellis, PRO Myrna Brooks, SAA Ron Rice, District Advisor Godfrey Springer, the late Joseph Miller who served as New Club Chair, and all the other project chairpersons and functionaries. To you the District 47 members, thanks for making my experience as your District Governor something I will always cherish.

I would like to especially thank my wife Kathy, who worked behind the scenes, easily 30 hours a week for the past 3 years. What a team we make!

When we had our first DEC meeting, the whole team agreed to work to make us the best...and they did it! I couldn’t be more proud of all our leaders. I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. I wanted to post all DEC members’ pictures here but time and space did not allow it. You know who you are and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Hall of Fame luncheon during our Fall Conference! Your dedication is what made the difference.

Again, I thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to serve you for the past 3 years. I have had the time of my life!

Always remember: If it isn’t FUN ... it isn’t TOASTMASTERS!

Be Ready… A CHANGE IS COMING!

On Wednesday, August 17, 2011, the first day of the International Convention, Toastmasters International will officially unveil its refreshed brand! This change is an all encompassing rebrand across all Toastmasters-related materials. This means our clubs’ agendas, websites, stationary items, business cards, badges, pins and even the club banner will all change. Your first question would probably be why does Toastmasters need a rebrand? The purpose of the brand refresh is to eliminate the perception of lack of consistency and recognition among members and prospective members. Toastmasters International has long been known as an organization that helps people improve their public speaking skills, as such, the primary objective of the rebrand is to create and share one consistent ‘Toastmasters’. Over the years, Toastmasters clubs and districts created websites, conference materials, meeting materials and other communications that displayed their individuality and the use of their own logos and themes. In preparation of the brand refresh, districts were encouraged not to create a theme for 2011 – 2012. Going forward, the new brand message will be used consistently across the organization, from clubs to districts. What does this brand refresh mean for our District? As Toastmasters, the brand is represented through everything we do and is more than simply a logo and colors. The rebrand will affect all Toastmasters related materials and all clubs around the world; however, it is important to note:

1. The mission of the organization has not changed.

2. The globe emblem will always be the official seal of the organization

3. There is NEW LOGO and that logo will become the primary mark on August 17, 2011. In addition to the new logo, Toastmasters International will be represented by NEW COLORS AND FONTS as well as A POSITIONING STATEMENT AND TAGLINE that support the growth and mission of the organization.

As of August 17, Toastmasters International asks that you begin using the newly branded materials instead of using materials that have the blue text emblem or current look and feel. It is not Toastmasters intention to place undue financial hardship on clubs and districts and they recognize that you cannot simply throw away materials you purchased. We therefore ask that you phase them out as quickly as possible and purchase the newly branded materials when your existing supply has been exhausted. Be sure to visit the brand portal on August 17 at www.toastmasters.org/vbp/ to access newly branded templates and resources to help your club refresh their materials. You may be aware that many items through the online store were unavailable as a result of inventory levels becoming depleted. As a result, Toastmasters will replenish all products by August 17, 2011. If you are a Club Officer and have not yet received your new manuals, you may download current Officers manuals at www.toastmasters.org/Members/OfficerResources/Officermanuals.aspx. For answers to your brand-related questions, visit the Rebrand ‘FAQs’ on the Toastmasters website at www.toastmasters.org/prerebrandfaqs. The District leadership team is excited about the future of Toastmasters International and the strategic initiative to create a consistent look and feel for our organization worldwide. It will soon be a brand that is recognized in countries around the world by the color, the content and the symbol used to advertise the organization we all love. Stay tuned to the Toastmasters website on August 17 for the ‘BIG CHANGE!’

Best Regards, Pamela D. Rolle, DTM District 47 Governor3

Not All TLIs are Alike!By Tiffany Willis-Gilmore (Area 51 Governor)

There may be several ways to produce a successful Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI). However, the one that worked for TLI Miami dealt with putting the people first. Their needs, their wants and their appetites must be nurtured during such an event.

It is a given that TLI is a requirement for officers. That need for an educational base is fulfilled by Toastmasters International by conveniently providing downloads of training material for all officer roles. This allows both the TM presenter and the trainee a comprehensive approach by using the material provided.

Since “comprehensive” is not always exciting, the presenters are encouraged to add their own twist or flair to make things interesting. Now, in regards to what Toastmasters want, they usually want convenience (i.e., location, time, parking, etc). For the most part, they don’t want their whole weekend consumed with training, not even for Toastmasters.

Our members have different appetites, usually based on their experience and expertise as a Toastmaster. This means the presenters must know enough to satisfy the more advanced Toastmasters without going too far over the heads of the new incoming officers. What a balancing act that must be! That is why the presenters must be familiar with their material and good at what they do.

In a nutshell, the formula for a successful TLI or any other event can be identified by the acronym, SWIFTLY:

S ecure a location conducive for people and parking. (You should expect 45% to 50% more individuals over registration. The location should be able to accommodate this overflow of people and vehicles.

Work out the timeline details within the first seven days of being assigned the task. It

does not matter if you have six weeks or six months, you should still produce a timeline. There is something to writing things down.

Identify your people immediately. Sure some things will change but put names in all of your slots and change them accordingly. Allow everyone a chance to be a part. Don’t use all of the same people. You want to strengthen your leadership base by matching past, present and future leaders. Give them information and resource material in advance. It is important to empower everyone thereby giving them ownership of the program. This will increase their enthusiasm and their participation. People work better when they have a vested interest in the success of the program.

Follow tradition. It is not necessary to “reinvent the wheel”. Gather as much information as you can from previous chairs and coordinators. Make sure you review and use what was given to you. Whatever you need, Toastmasters International already provides. Although you are following tradition, be sure to put your own signature on your program. Develop something new that can be used in the future.

Timing. Timing is everything at events such as TLI’s. Every session, large or small, needs to be timed. Most importantly, the first session sets the tone and will cause problems if it does not end on time. People need to arrive at their initial training sessions on time. Keep in mind they are familiarizing themselves with their training environment as well.

Learn from this experience. Receive and sort through all of the information and suggestions that you will gather. Elect to follow those that will work for your audience. Realize that everyone will not agree with you. However, as a leader, you must take a stand. Take your decisions seriously and do not waiver.

You. Understand that “you” are the link to the people (presenters, keynote, SAA, facilitators, attendees, etc.) and will make it all happen. Therefore, you must shake hands, make calls, send emails and recognize all who participate. You can recognize them on stage, with certificates, with gifts… it is up to you; but you should validate them in some way. This is essential because people need to be uplifted. Compliments are free, give them. Every attendee provides a piece of your TLI puzzle.

Adhere to this formula and you can be assured that your next TLI will be a grand success!

Dear Toastmaster member,

As directed by policy, the Board of Directors periodically reviews membership dues to ensure that the organization can satisfy member needs while continuously enhancing their experience and the services and programs provided. After a review of the organization’s five-year financial forecast of activities compared with forecasted revenue, the Board has voted to increase membership dues.

As a result, on October 1, 2011 Toastmasters’ annual membership dues will increase from $54 (U.S. dollars) to $72 (U.S. dollars), payable in increments of $36 (U.S. dollars) every six months.

Several factors drive this increase: 1) Member needs are greater than ever. 2) Since 1995, membership has grown nearly 55%, from 169,330 members in 1995 to 262,000 in

2010. In this same period, annual dues increased only once in 2005 from $36 (U.S. dollars) to $54 (U.S. dollars).

3) Toastmasters has passed the economy of scale established a decade ago; its support services must expand in order to better serve its ever-expanding member base.

The increased funding will be used to enhance member support and services, and enable the implementation of the five-year Strategic Plan that was developed by the Board of Directors in 2010.

If you have any questions, please review the Frequently Asked Questions document provided below. If you have further questions, please email [email protected].

Sincerely,

10 Reasons to Embrace 2011 Membership Dues IncreaseIt is often said, “Some people see the glass as half empty, while others see it as half full”. Every Toastmaster I speak with agrees that we enjoy the most cost effective self improvement program in the world. Some say, they have paid much more for much less in other programs. Toastmasters International has announced an increase in member dues effective October 1, 2011. Here are 10 reasons to embrace the membership dues increase:

1. Toastmasters, is a self paced program that results in unlimited personal growth for the individual and employee, as well as goal achievement for employers.

2. A letter highlighting the significance of the education award can be sent upon request directly to the CEO or head of HR of your company. This identifies an employee as a self starter and a more valuable asset to the organization thereby, positioning you for career advancement.

3. Members have the opportunity to experiment and gain experience in a friendly and supportive environment. They can evolve into leadership in the Toastmasters Club, a learning laboratory which will enhance their lives, personally and professionally.

4. Through weekly interactive meetings, members learn how to overcome their fear of speaking and improve morale.

5. Members learn how to think quickly thereby building self confidence.

6. Toastmasters program provides ongoing training at Club meetings resulting in refining time management and organizational skills and critical thinking for the individual.

7. Members develop keen listening skills and receive constructive feedback from effective evaluations resulting in increased self-awareness and more productive teams in the work place. They also learn to critique others in a supportive manner.

8. Access to excellent and professionally written material

9. Exposure to other multi-talented professionals who can offer advice, and mentoring.

10. Toastmasters program provides members with the opportunity to fulfill Officer roles and head committees resulting in leadership growth, career advancement for the individual and better leaders for employers and the community.

Eddie Rickenbacker Toastmasters ClubCelebrates 58 Years

The year was 1953. Walt Disney’s Peter Pan premiered at the Roxy Theater in New York; Ernest Hemmingway won a Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and

the Sea; Elizabeth II was crowned as queen of England and the Eddie Rickenbacker Toastmasters Club held its first meeting at the Eastern Airlines Building on 36th Street in Miami, Florida. Chartered by Ira Callman, the club was named after then Eastern Airlines owner, Edward Rickenbacker.

Born On October 8, 1890, in Ohio, Rickenbacker’s formal education did not pass the seventh grade. At thirteen young Eddie had to leave school to find work when his father died. He had an avid affinity toward machines, which led him to enrolling in engineering correspondence courses and aggressively seeking employment in the automotive industry.

He went on to become an Indianapolis race car driver before enlisting in the US Army during World War I. His goal was to become a fighter pilot, though he had no training or experience. Through determination and hard work he acquired “ace status” as a pilot. He flew 300 combat hours and had 26 victories, which are record accomplishments.

Rickenbacker then worked for GM where he was responsible for managing Eastern Air Transport, which he merged with Florida Airways to form Eastern Airlines. He bought Eastern Airlines in 1938, for $3.5 million. Rickenbacker was responsible for many changes in the commercial

aviation industry like negotiating air mail routes with the US Government. Through the years, Eddie Rickenbacker accomplished many accolades that are too numerous to list. Captain Eddie Rickenbacker suffered a stroke while in Switzerland, and then contracted pneumonia. He died on July 23, 1973.

Just like the man, the Eddie Rickenbacker Toastmasters club has had a very diverse history. Over its 58 year existence the club has seen a

lot of dips, turns, slopes and peeks. Recently at its 58th Charter Day Celebration the room at the Goodlet Adult Center in Hialeah, Florida, where the club now meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm was nearly filled. There were people of many different races, nationalities and ages. The oldest attendee was 96 year old Muriel Tower, who has been a member of the club since the mid 1980s. She has been quoted as saying, “Our club has never had such interesting and well organized meetings. Our club is headed in the right direction!” The youngest attendee was guest, 11 year old Malachi Munroe, the son of the club’s current

President, Danelle McNeill.

The club is having its next quarterly membership

drive on Tuesday, August 9th, 2011, as a part of its effort to build and diversify its membership, and remain a President’s Distinguished Club. Its aim is to train the next generation of members to be better speakers, listeners and thinkers and to produce men and women who will leave an indelible signature on the world as memorable as that of its namesake, Eddie Rickenbacker.

Courage is doing what

you are afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you are scared.

How Is Your ‘SocMe’ Etiquette?by Phyllis May, DTM, member of Key West Toastmasters in Key West, Florida.

It is probably safe to say most Toastmasters of today grew up without cell phones, email, facebook, blogs and other variations of social media. These phenomena became a part of our lives and without parents or teachers being responsible for our etiquette, we all embraced the new technology together. However, in our enthusiasm, manners and etiquette apparently were never considered as part of the learning curve.

By now, enough time has elapsed with a group of children who will never know life, without this technology. We can call this the Social Media or “SocMe” generation. Since the trail we are blazing is not one with many examples, is it too late to realize that new technology brings new etiquette? Don’t we know that we need to make an effort to use our technology without losing our manners?

The newest “SocMe” protocol is to remember the relationship that you want with your friends. Since more people appear to be on Facebook and since it is more social, rather than business, let’s start there:Facebook is a wonderful way of connecting for personal and business reasons. It’s great to get to know people more intimately than we might ordinarily get to know them through a more business or organizational channel. If you have a business and want to promote it, always be careful about the personal image you are projecting. Posts that are all business are boring. Posts that are all personal are great and help us feel like we know someone better. Combining the two effectively however, is a fine line to walk but I can name many Toastmasters who do it with great skill. Two names you would recognize are, Sheryl Roush and Darren LaCroix. Through their facebook communication, they make you feel like they know you personally and like you know them personally too. They connect interpersonally while also maintaining their professional and business image to achieve their endeavors.

If I accept your ‘friend’ request please don’t “use and abuse” our friendship. Spam in Facebook is just as annoying as spam emails. I don’t mind being asked to vote for something or ‘like’ something once…or maybe twice…but not every hour! That’s abuse and your ‘SocMe’ etiquette needs to be refreshed. Unfortunately, if you send a message on Facebook to every one of your friends, there is no bcc. Sending a message with hundreds of names on it is a big ‘faux pas’. If you truly need to spam that many people, use your email address book and use the bcc option….but it’s still spam, no matter what you call it. Use discretion in tagging photos, especially if the photo is unflattering or if the person is not in it.

Just remember….you can’t ‘un-ring’ the bell. You want your ‘SocMe’ to enhance relationships although unfortunately, even with the best intentions, they don’t always work that way. We are all learning as we go and just when we think we have it figured out, it will all be…“oh, so 15 minutes ago!” See you on Facebook and I promise not to annoy you. If I do, you have every right to ‘un-friend’ me!

Corporate Corner

A STIMULUS THAT’S BETTER THAN A DTMBy: Josh Frank, Treasure Coast Toastmasters,

Corporate Committee Chair District 47, cell 772-633-4234, email [email protected]

As a business consultant, business owner, and Toastmaster, I have always been amazed at how we overlook our strengths in presenting our Toastmasters organization as a low cost solution to overcoming business obstacles. As an analyst who has been into hundreds of companies to identify and quantify their issues, so they can move forward, I have discovered that every problem is rooted in failed communication and leadership. Better communication and leadership is what we learn and teach in Toastmasters. We hold many solutions.

My mission through Toastmasters is to show people and companies how to help themselves to a better life. I, as corporate club chair and an independent business consultant who knows something personally about the ups and downs of life and business, would like to help others to help themselves.

Two years ago we successfully tried these concepts in Division E, the largest and “most dysfunctional” Division in the new District 84, according to the then “Big Three”. We had the advantage of four knowledgeable and dedicated Area Governors, but we also had three Area Governors who were “missing in action”. We were centered in Orlando, though not in a major metro like West Palm or Tampa/St. Petersburg, we learned a lot by putting on two “Interactive Job Interview Workshops”, of which I was rather proud. These programs helped others to help themselves. As for direct business skills tools one can acquire through Toastmasters: Use table topics for elevator pitches or “2 minute drill” sales presentations. Use prepared speeches to improve performance in sales or administrative departments. Use evaluations for inspired coaching and management of people, especially the “Oreo” technique of tweaking performance tips with positive enforcement on both sides of your corrective comments. Use effective meeting skills guidelines for timely and effective meetings. When we set-up a Toastmasters Club at a corporation, all of this should be sold to the CEO. Goals should be set for designated areas of improvement that are non-monetary. Mentors with training should establish a year-long custom program to ensure effectiveness.

Milk and cookies: For everyone there are tremendous educational opportunities personally and in High Performance Leadership (HPL) projects as well as, DTM prospects. For me however, the best rewards were personal. I was sitting out, resting with my therapy guy in front of a restaurant, smoking a cigar, having suffered a stroke 4 months earlier. I was unexpectedly approached by a young women and her husband. She called out and hugged me; she just wanted to let me know how useful the Interactive Job Interview Workshops had been in acquiring her dream job in Vero, a tough job market. For me, this is the true satisfaction in working with corporate clubs, even better than a DTM! Call me if you want a part in this rewarding experience!
