I’m so excited…

And I just can’t hide… I’m about to lose… No, not lose control; jump up and down.

There are so many wonderful things going on in District 47 now. It must be SPRING! Well, the Spring Conference is around the corner, so that is always a clue that winter is gone.

Here is a short list of the exciting activity in District 47:

• I’ve heard that all Clubs will be paying dues on time, BEFORE March 31. This is indeed a tremendous effort on behalf of all our Clubs – Thank you!

• The Spring Conference is almost here and we have some amazing work-shops in store for the attending members, superb presenters, and two fierce contests, tons of networking opportunities, an important Council Meeting and much more.

• The month of April has been proclaimed “Toastmasters Awareness Month” in the State of Florida. This is extraordinaire news and some-thing we ask every member to share with friends and family. We are very proud of this honor. Florida has now caught up with The Bahamas, where October has been the nations “Toastmasters Month” for some time already.

• We will attempt to break the Guinness World Record of a Speech Mara-thon. We want all Toastmasters to schedule time between June 10th midday to June 13th evening and come to do those manual speeches. I’m sure there are several of you out there who have a hard time fitting your 45 min or 1-hour speech into your Club meeting. THIS IS THE TIME to get it done!! You will be able to schedule as many speeches as you want. We will invite anyone to come and speak, so please put the dates on your calendar and plan to be part of this historic event.

Stay tuned for more information coming your way real soon!

But first – see you in Fort Lauderdale April 16-18th at

the Spring Conference.

The Distinguished Toastmaster

For brand new people to Toastmasters, a Distinguished Toastmaster is simply another phrase in the Toastmasters lexicon. When they find out a little bit more about it, they realize it’s actually the end to a long journey. Very few of us ever make it to the end of that journey.

I remember the first District Conference I attended…Saturday night...the DTM walk. The room was filled with excitement as the existing DTMs lined up to welcome the newest members with handshakes and hugs. I was so impressed! Here was a very special club into which these Toastmasters were being initiated. I knew this group was the best of the best and that is where I set my sights. Little did I re-alize what growth I would attain along this path.

Something amazing actually happens along that route. As you do your speeches, finish your manuals, fulfill the leadership roles, there is a point where you truly begin to feel like a Distinguished Toastmas-ter. It is no longer just a title or words on a page, it becomes a state of being.

You know, when it comes to public speaking, running meetings, clubs or being a leader, there is noth-ing you cannot accomplish once you have experienced the growth that Toastmasters can bring. You gain that confidence you always wanted to have and have learned to handle s many tasks in a profes-sional manner.

I invite all of you to set Distinguished Toastmaster as a goal, put your feet on the steps towards that objective…start along the path and may you reach those heights you only dreamed of.

I’ll be waiting for you at the DTM Walk with open arms!

A Refreshing Experience

I took a brisk morning walk through the park on the first day of Spring. During my walk, I could not help but notice how clean and beautiful everything appeared to be. The air was fresh, the birds sang and the flowers were in full bloom. This was no doubt a refreshing experience.

When lat did you have a refreshing experience?

When visiting my home Club for the first time, I remembered how energized and excited I felt. I was so excited about the meeting; I could not wait for the next week to attend another meeting. After the second meeting, I knew Toastmasters would become a part of my life. What I did not know, was what wonderful opportunities being a Toastmaster would bring.

Soon after I became a Toastmaster, I attended my first District Conference. I was amazed to meet so many others who loved Toastmasters as much as I did. The education sessions were informative and the contests were simply amazing. I did not want the weekend to end.

WOW! What a refreshing experience. From that day forward, I’ve attended every District Conference.

If you have not had a refreshing experience lately, what are you waiting for? Let’s spring into action and register now for our District Conference. Encourage ALL members from ALL Clubs to attend. It will help revitalize Clubs under charter strength and give members many ideas on how to build suc-cessful Clubs.

It will be an experience you will never forget!

Welcome to District 47!

IPDG Antionette Fox, DTM, selected

as the first RAM for Region VIII

Congratulations are in order for our own Immediate Past District Governor An-tionette Fox who was hand-picked to serve as the very first Region Advisor Marketing (RAM) for Region VIII. The RAM position was created as part of the changes installed when Proposi-tion A was passed last year. The Region Advisor Marketing will be a valuable asset to the growth of Toastmasters International. The volunteers who serve in these roles help district officers gain more clubs and more members by:

• Providing ongoing marketing support and hands-on training; • Coaching district leaders and advising them on marketing issues and chal-lenges;

• Helping district teams develop and implement strategies to create new clubs and strengthen existing clubs.

The RAM is a vital link between districts, World Headquarters and the Board of Directors. We know Toastmaster Fox will make us proud as she moves forward to serve not only our District but all of those on Region VIII. Best Wishes!

Taking the Next Step

Toastmasters offers us many opportunities to hone our leadership abilities. Starting in our Club, we take on roles that put us in a position to lead differ-ent segments of the meeting. Tasks like General Evaluator, Topics Master and Toastmaster help us build confidence and management skills one step at a time as we check off the tasks in our CL manual.

Then we stretch a little more by signing on as a Club Officer. Each of the Club Officer roles provides us with the invaluable leadership experience. The seven Club Officers team up and work to lead the member-ship to success for themselves and the Club.

What comes next? Once you’ve mastered the Club leadership opportunities it’s time to take the next step, and it’s a big one: District Officer.

The District is always looking for dedicated, enthusi-

astic Toastmasters to become Area Governors. The role requires a 1-year commitment to assist 4-7 Clubs achieve the Club Mission. For a list of TI’s qualifications go to this weblink or ask your current Area or Division Governor for more information.

Is it hard work? You bet! But isn’t anything that’s worthwhile?

Here in District 47 we work hard and play hard! Take a look at these photos from the March District Execu-tive Committee (DEC) Meeting where the District Of-ficers meet to plan the successful future of D47. Become a part of the fun and fellowship...become a District 47 Leader!

Potential to Turn a Life Around

One of my heroes is Leo Buscaglia who was a pro-fessor at the University of Southern California. He authored many New York Times bestselling inspirational books on of love.

One of my favorites is Living Loving and Learning. While he was teaching at the USC, Buscaglia was moved by a student's suicide. He then focused on human disconnectedness and the meaning of life. He believed that social bonds are essential at transcending stresses in daily life.

Buscaglia worked to overcome social and mental barriers that inhibited the expression of love be-tween people. He was known for giving hugs. He would hug everyone he met; there were no barri-ers in his expression of affection, hugging, and ability to make others feel worthwhile.

Unfortunately, Leo died in June 1998 at the age of 74.

Let’s embrace the following quote by Leo Bus-caglia; ‘Too often we underestimate the power

of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of car-ing, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.’

As Toastmasters, let’s remember that each of us have this potential.

If you know of the birth of a child, passing of a fellow Toastmaster, a “big” birthday or similar occasion, please send a note to our Compas-sionate Mailbox using this link on the

District 47 website http://toastmastersd47.org

15th Anniversary

The Delray Newsmakers Club # 2225 had some ex-citing news lately: on February 22nd the Club cele-brated its 15th anniversary. The meeting was an exceptionally exciting evening with 17 members and 5 guests present. The following special visi-tors came to share in our celebration; Division D Governor Karen Novek DTM, Area 42 Governor

Hieu Huynh ACG/ALB, Club Mentor Tom Newberry ATMS and Jennifer Brin of the TED Center.

We felt honored to have these distinguished guests come celebrate our 15 years of excellence. Love was the theme of the evening with some thought provoking table topics. It certainly left our mem-bers and guests with something to think about. The night was concluded with a scrumptious anni-versary cake! It was a rewarding evening for me as I have only been a member of the club for nine short months, yet felt extremely proud to be part of this superb club and organization.

I see Toastmasters as a pathway to help give me courage in moving forward with my business. Working through the CC and CL manuals provides me with goals and assists me with building my self-confidence.

Thanks to Delray Newsmakers member Jane Sisoian for sharing the celebration and photo with

us.

Thanks to Cindy Beckles, ACG with the Wellington Toastmasters Club for sharing her 10 Commandments

for being a Successful Toastmaster.

Secrets of Success

C reate a portfolio for your speeches and achievements.

O perate with a spirit of excellence in everything you do.

M aster your oral and written communication skills – Strive to be great!

M ake a clear blue print for your Toastmasters journey.

I ncorporate personal quarterly evaluations of your annual Toastmaster goals to en-sure you remain on track.

T ake advantage of the Toastmaster magazine and TI website. They are great re-sources.

M entor others – When you help others to grow, you grow as a person too.

E ffectively Use Speech Evaluations to continually improve your speaking. Do not re-peatedly make the same speaking errors.

N etwork with other clubs and members. How? Volunteer to help other clubs with their speech contests: they will often return the favor.

T reat everyone with respect at all times –especially when delivering evaluations or participating in business meetings.
