A group of hikers on a trek through the woods was enjoying a weekend of fun and

adventure when suddenly their jubilation was interrupted by piercing screams for help

coming from a distance. The leader beckoned the other 5 toward the edge of the cliff.

They could easily see under the glow of the early morning sun that a raft had

overturned in the lake not too far below. Wading

in the water were two elderly men and two

women as they struggled with their raft—trying to

turn it upright. Rather than stay back and watch,

the teens skillfully balanced caution and speed as

they scurried their way down the cliff toward the

lake. By putting their young strength to work and

drawing on their Boy’s Scout training, they jumped

in the water and together were able to turn the

capsized vessel upright.

What happened that day at the lake brings to

mind what can happen in Toastmasters. Members

are given opportunities to serve as leaders in our Clubs and face a task that can’t be

done alone. It’s often a struggle to get the work done, but it is important to realize

we cannot do everything by ourselves. Our organization is only successful when ALL

the members join in and work alongside the leadership of the Club, Area or District.

Members make a difference and that’s why you are important to your Club’s success.

The question that stands out in my mind is: How are we as members helping to keep

our organization moving ahead? As an individual - What are you doing to make your

club successful?

Almost every week we hear news stories about a search-and-rescue mission. It may

involve people caught in an avalanche while on a skiing trip, a child who wanders away

from a family picnic and gets lost, fishermen caught in a storm at sea or people buried

in the rubble of fallen buildings after an earthquake. The most recent events were the

tragic airline disasters in Asia. In every case, the people at risk are unable to help

themselves. Those who are found and saved usually have lasting gratitude for those

who joined in the search and rescued them.

Whether as a member, a club or district leader, in Toastmasters

we may need to go on a search and rescue mission to make our

Clubs successful. Sometimes members fall by the wayside and all

we need to do is find them and let them know we need them to

be a part of our team. It may take great effort on our part but

sometimes we may need to climb down from the cliff and get

ourselves wet like the teenaged hikers. We may need to throw

out a line or life vest to someone. Whatever is required, we

must be ready and willing to be a “First Responder”.

Our duty is one of commitment to our organization and it is our

responsibility to rescue lost members. Teamwork divides the

effort and multiplies the effect! Become a part of the rescue

mission today! As the young hikers did for the 2 couples with

their raft, by helping to rescue one member at a time you can

also help to turn an entire Club – UPRIGHT and back on course.

With only 5 months remaining in this fiscal year, I implore you to

descend the cliff and become a “Toastmaster to the Rescue!

Toastfully,

Anthony (Tony) Longley, DTM

H appy New Year, District 47!

Thank you for all of the cards, calls and emails during my

recuperation. Our District Leadership team has suffered several personal

losses this year, but our Toastmasters Family has stepped up to help in each

situation and I know how much it has meant to me personally.

Officer Training

Welcome to all of the new officers who took office on January 1st, and

welcome back to all of our continuing officers. By this time, hopefully

you have all attended training. There is still one formal training

scheduled for February 7th in Homestead. In order for your club to

meet its goals, at least 4 of your officers must be trained. If your club

has not met this goal, please contact your Area Governor to find out

what Make-Up Training opportunities are available for you. Education

is a critical component to the Toastmasters Program, and clubs with

trained officers traditionally are more successful and have more

members achieving success as well.

Contests

It is also contest season, and your club needs to hold your Club Level Table Topics and International Speech Contests

before your Area Contest. Most Area Contests start February 13th, but check with your Area Governor. If your

Area has four clubs or fewer, you are allowed to send two contestants to each contest to the Area Contest. Your

Area Governor will let you know if your area meets this criteria.

Area Contests will be happening up to March 13th, and then we will begin the Division Contests. Save the date for

your Division Contest:

Division A – March 14th 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Division B – March 21st 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Division C – March 28th 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Division D – March 28th 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Division E – March 14th 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Division F – March 25th 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Division I – March 26th 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM

The District Contests will be held at the Spring Conference in Ft. Lauderdale.

Spring Conference

The Spring Conference will be in Ft. Lauderdale at the Sheraton Airport & Cruise Hotel on April 24th- 26th.

This is our Diamond Jubilee Celebration, and we have our President Elect, DTM Jim Kokocki, as our guest speaker for

the weekend. There will also be a special Leadership and Awards Luncheon on Saturday combined with a special

Birthday Celebration for the District. These are in addition to Education Workshops, Contests, Fun and our Semi-

Annual Business Meeting and Elections. You do not want to miss out on the amazing weekend! The event will sell

out, so do not wait to register!

Early Bird Registration is open through February 13th for this Dazzling Event! You can get all of the details and register at:

http://d47.toastmastersdistricts.org/d47-upcoming-events-conferences.html

If you are interested in presenting, the application is available online. The deadline is January 31st to apply, but we will

accept applications until February 7th in case this is the first time you are hearing about this and want to participate.

There are also Sponsorship and Advertising Opportunities. The details are at the link above. Please share this

information with your employers and other community leaders and encourage them to be part of this special event.

Club Incentives

You have all been very busy, and I want to provide an update to the Education related Club Incentives as of today.

37 Clubs achieved at least 5 Distinguished Club Program Points by November 30th. These clubs will be distinguished

this year as long as they end the year with at least 20 members, or +5 over their base membership from July 1st. They

have also received 30 points towards the Incentive of their choice.

H appy New Year Fellow Toastmasters,

We all are well aware and appreciate the benefits we receive from our

membership in Toastmasters. The benefits go beyond the direct

development of communication and leadership skills. There are indirect

professional and personal benefits, too, including career advancement,

career change, increased sales, networking, and improved relationships –

areas that affect EVERYONE – Toastmasters and non-Toastmasters alike.

However, Toastmasters members comprise a tiny fraction of the world’s

population – in large part because many people do not know we exist!

Let’s spread the word about this best kept secret and grow our

organization! Let’s help our family, friends and other folks who are not

part of our family learn how the program can positively impact them!

With the New Year just beginning, there is no better time. Invite a family member, friend or co-worker to your next meeting; have your club

conduct an Open House; and/or take part in the International Talk Up

Toastmasters contest.

Open House Incentive – District 47 Event Taking Place NOW until

May 31

Open Houses are a great way to showcase your awesome club and to show potential members how Toastmasters

can benefit them. The District is offering up to $25 to offset costs as an incentive for your club to conduct a

membership building Open House event. We ask that you please adhere to the following guidelines:

Provide me ([email protected]) with information about your Open House at least two weeks prior

to the event (the earlier the better), including a copy of your event flyer and your plans for spending the

money.

Within two weeks after the event, send me a copy of the sign-in sheet and copy me on any follow-up email

communications to your guests.

Also within two weeks after the event, complete and submit a district expense reimbursement form (provided

upon request) along with your receipts totaling up to $25.

Talk Up Toastmasters – International Campaign Taking Place from February 1 to March 31

Simply add five new, dual or reinstated members with a join date between February 1 and March 31, and you’ll

receive a special “Talk up Toastmasters” ribbon to proudly display on your club’s banner. Qualifying clubs can also

earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order. The winning clubs will be revealed online within a

few weeks of the contest ending (check out last year’s winners here: https://www.toastmasters.org/Leadership-

Central/Club-Officer-Tools/Membership-Building/~/media/2BC59090AFBA4671BD07DA0E4C9A234F.ashx). As

with the Open House program, there are some guidelines:

Lt. Gov. Marketing says: A New Year, a New Them

Page 12: D47 Sunshiner - January 2015

12

with the Open House program, there are some

guidelines:

Applications and payments for members with a join

date between February 1 and March 31 must be

received at World Headquarters or online no

later than March 31.

The addition of transfer and charter members does

not count for “Talk Up Toastmasters” credit

The discount code expires six months from the date

of issue and is not valid with any other offer.

I encourage you to take advantage of these programs

that provide your club with a special gift for sharing the

value of Toastmasters with others. A win-win! I wish you

all the best in your membership building efforts.

T he Marketing Department of Toastmasters District 47 is responsible for all aspects of marketing, club-

building, and member- and club-retention efforts within the district. This includes defining an overall

marketing strategy for the district, developing outreach and retention efforts with existing community and corporate

clubs, and penetrating new markets. Additionally, the marketing area supports challenged clubs and helps them to

become Distinguished.

The marketing strategy guides the district in meeting membership and club-growth objectives. The team is led by

the Lt. Governor Marketing who, with the approval of the District

Governor, appoints members to chair marketing committees. The Committee Chairs help the Lt. Governor Marketing design,

develop, and implement district marketing projects. Together, the

marketing team creates a strong club-building program by

appointing club sponsors and mentors for new clubs and club

coaches and advocates for existing clubs that are struggling. Our

mission is to build new clubs and support all clubs in achieving

excellence in the Distinguished Club Program.

Helping Others Helps Ourselves

The marketing team needs you! Several clubs in District 47 are struggling with low membership and need the help of

experienced, knowledgeable Toastmasters to survive. Several prospective clubs are in the midst of being formed and

need the help of enthusiastic, well-informed Toastmasters to succeed. If you are not yet a DTM, you will need to

serve as a club sponsor, mentor or coach in order to satisfy the DTM requirements. If you are a DTM, you will

receive enormous satisfaction helping fledgling or struggling clubs succeed in their quest to become Distinguished.

Training is required to serve in these roles and will be offered at all upcoming Toastmasters Leadership Institute

(TLI) events. Please see the district website – d47.toastmastersdistricts.org – for more information on TLIs, including

dates and schedules. Please contact the Lt. Governor Marketing at [email protected] if you have any

other questions or need more information.

Consider being a club sponsor, mentor, coach or advocate – you won’t regret it. Your help today will positively

impact generations of Toastmasters to come!

Marketing team needs you!

Universal Toastmasters recently hosted its club

meeting with an eerily spooky flair to celebrate

the Halloween season. Toastmaster of the day

was Maurice Fuller, DTM, who got into his role

and the theme. He did consult with club

President Jerrod Clairsaint.
