Kids and Money

The younger children are introduced to the concept of money management, the more likely they are to handle their finances better as they become independent. Giving an allowance and encouraging your children to save a percentage of it is a great place to start but is not

enough for long-term financial well-being.

Make a budget, and don’t forget the ice cream! Although children don’t have bills or expenses yet, the concept of budgeting should start early. Transfer your costs for movies, birthday parties, local events or even treats at the store to your child’s budget. Give them an allowance and options to choose from on how to spend it. They will learn quickly that we all have to pick and choose where to spend our precious dollars.

Set financial goals and stick to them! While budgeting is great for the day-to-day expenses, it doesn’t really translate to those big dollar items we like to splurge on. Here are some ideas of financial goals from my household: a new skateboard, an Xbox video game, a day of snowboarding, or a trip to Build-a-Bear Workshop.

Save for an emergency or rainy day! Set boundaries for saving money when a child receives an allowance, extra chore money, or even birthday or Christmas money. Some parents choose to go with a flat percentage (my dad held me to 10% from day 1) or not spending any money until a flat amount is saved (say $5). The earlier we get accustomed to saving, the easier it is to not spend every dollar we bring home.

Lemonade Stand Start-Up! Last year my two young children wanted to have a lemonade stand during our

neighborhood garage sale on a rare hot summer day. We started out with writing out the cost of all the supplies and they were off and running. My son set up the furniture while my daughter put her art skills to work on signage. As the money flowed in they had to hold it all in a shoebox and resist the urge to buy our neighbors old toys and sports equipment. When the day was done we sat at our dinner table and counted the profits. They subtracted the expenses and handed that money over to me and divided the remainder for themselves. It was an excellent lesson and actually a lot of fun to do with them.

This has been one of the most

difficult years for my family. As

mentioned in prior columns, my

family faced many trials this past

year regarding health and aging. It

became clear to me that what we

faced was exactly what you, my

clients and friends, have faced. In

fact, many of you reminded me

that my own advice over the years

was, ironically, the best advice I

could follow now. As we faced these challenges, it required planning

for healthcare, in-home care, rest homes, hospitals, Medicaid, finances,

powers of attorney, and estate planning.

My father passed away on February 9th. We are now trying to heal, and

to move ahead. It may be helpful to share with you what I experienced

regarding my father, and now my mother. As a financial advisor, I have

learned that money and family are inseparable: it is personal. As the

advisor to several hundred families, I have traveled through life with

many people from start to finish, and what may have been a good plan a

decade ago, is different at the end of life. I meet with numerous families

each year to discuss everything from worries about outliving the money;

to answering questions about how to survive financially after a spouse

passes; to assisting families who may be subject to a total spend-down of

their estate to provide medical assistance for a loved one; or for those who

have just experienced a divorce and must determine how to manage the

finances. My role as a financial advisor often involves a deep partnership

with those who are traversing the ups and downs of life.

I can honestly say that “until you are there,” the process of elder care

and elder needs can be overwhelming no matter how prepared we are.

I will be brief and create an outline approach. On a practical level, it

becomes so important to know that you have a power of attorney for

both your healthcare and finances. If you are a child who has a parent

without either of these documents, please seek legal advice and have

one in place. It will make life much easier for all concerned. Also, it

is very helpful to know where all important documents are located

including financial statements and the will or Trust.

Another important element here is to talk about the end of life with your

parents and your children. Waiting until the end, or never discussing

it at all is a heavy burden for survivors. A “sit down” discussion is so

valuable. At this time it is imperative to also establish heirs and the

executor. A reliable attorney is valuable. I know. We have one. She has

taken us through the journey the past 10 months and has been wise,

fair, and caring. All is well and in good hands.

I have never been as involved with a loss as I am now. I wrote Dad’s

obituary; I told my mother that Dad was gone, made the arrangements,

spoke at Dad’s funeral and was greatly honored to experience the

presentation of the flag to our family from the Marines who knelt in

front of me with the flag and saluted us all. The three gun salute shook

the windows of the church in Onalaska where I was raised. It all came

crashing down on us that Dad was gone. He was a good man.

My loss is personal, but it helps me help you much more. Quite often

tears are shed in my office as we meet to discuss a loss, or to set financial

affairs in order for those facing an illness, or the aftermath of divorce.

Simply stated: life changes. Until we are “there,” it never becomes a

reality. But I have witnessed plenty of change in the lives of my clients

and friends the past 16 years as a financial advisor.

With the days and weeks since Dad passed, I have learned that more

decisions are to be made. From settling the estate to addressing my

Mom’s needs. Thank goodness we live in a world where helpful people

abound! My office is filled with wonderful cards of support, and each

day I speak to people who share their concern and sympathy, and offer

a helping hand. I love our community and encourage you all to seek the

services available when times are tough. Those services and the people

who serve are here. They are amazing.

20,000 is the answer. So what is the question?

The number of times the Seattle Mariners will strike out this season? The number of traffic circles purchased by Thurston County?

Nope, by the time you read this – it will be the number of members in the credit union. After setting records in 2011, 2012 and then again in 2013 for membership, it appears we are on task to do it again in 2014. It’s just that we’re not sure, exactly, as to why. Some financial institutions increase their membership by merging or buying out rivals. Others offer sign up bonuses as a lure (and what is known as “renting loyalty”). Our plan is a bit more on the simple side – just keep doing what we are doing and things will work themselves out.

One change you may have noticed is that we are not mailing the BeeLine every quarter. Due to the fact that postage has now gone through the stratosphere, we are still producing it four times per year but are only mailing two of them. Copies of all four will in the branches as they are published. If our riveting articles peak your interest, you can check it out online as well.

We also have our email newsletter – the Artesian. Produced twice per month, it features articles regarding finance, local issues and has special offers that you won’t see elsewhere as well as announcements of new products. We also use the Artesian as a sounding board with special surveys and opinion polls – which are then used to help make the credit union that YOU want.

So I encourage you to go to our home page at www.obee.com and sign up for the newsletter at the bottom of the screen. As always, we don’t sell, spindle or mutilate your email address. It’s just us.

And finally, take a gander under our Membership section on our website. You will find two new entries, “TrueStage Insurance” – which offers discounted insurance for credit union members only and “Discounts for Members,” which has special savings in many areas. We plan to keep enhancing these two areas to give you opportunities to both save a buck and help

the credit union movement. Have a wonderful and happy spring!
