Some butterflies lay more than 1,000 eggs at a time. Every butterfly begins life as an egg the size of a pinhead. The monarch butterfly lays her eggs on a milkweed leaf. Just over a week later the eggs begin to hatch. A small caterpillar crawls out of the egg shell.-Vickkeyah

The caterpillar needs food in order to grow. It folds up a leaf and sticks together with silk. When a caterpillar hatches it eats its egg shell. It grows quickly so it needs to eat lots of leaves.-Elijah

A caterpillar hatches from an egg. The caterpillar eats plants. The caterpillar grows and molts. It crawls out of its old skin. The caterpillar molts four or five times. The caterpillar hangs upside down and then becomes a chrysalis. The chrysalis will become a butterfly. -Kalayah

After a caterpillar is fully grown it will become a pupa. It hangs inside a hard shell called a chrysalis. Inside the shell it undergoes metamorphosis, or change. When it is ready, a butterfly comes out of the shell.-Cole

A butterfly has no jaws so it can’t eat solid food. Butterflies drink nectar from flowers. They also drink juices from fruit. To help them drink, butterflies have a straw like body part called a proboscis. In really hot areas butterflies will gather on wet ground to sip up water. -Erica

Butterflies eat different food during each life stage. Caterpillars chew out of their egg shells. They eat plants around them. Caterpillars eat leaves, grass, flowers, and weeds. Some like milkweed.
