CLUNES COMMUNITY NEWS 3

G’day everyone, the crime round up for the last month...

Only two reported crimes for the last month in the area. The first being the theft of a computer lap top from a residential property which may have been unlocked with the occupant in the yard at the time. Just goes to show that some people have more front than Myers and will enter your property even whilst you are in the area. Make sure you do what ever you can to secure your property and belongings. The second theft was of an old wool press from a vacant property, both matters still under investigation. On another note, a 4 wheel motorcycle and power tools were stolen from a shed in the Glendaruel area, and while technically this is not in my response area it is still close enough to be of concern.

Any info in relation to the above offences would be greatly appreciated.

I have received a number of calls in the last month in relation to various scams that are floating around at the moment. We all know about the Nigerian Lottery scam that has had plenty of publicity of late, but the offenders are getting smarter. One of the latest is offenders ‘cold call’ your home phone and tell you that they are from Microsoft or other reputable computer companies and offer to ‘fix’ your computer of certain viruses that they have monitored on your system. They ask for passwords and other private information to gain remote access to your computer and thus have access to all your private info including banking information. NEVER, EVER give out computer passwords to anyone and change them regularly. If you think that your computer has a virus then take it to a reputable repairer to be checked.

There has also been an increase in EBay type scams, where you purchase an item over the internet and then the seller wants you to deposit monies in a third party account. This third party account is almost always an overseas account and usually involves the use of a money transfer company, such as Western Union. Whilst Western Union is a very reputable company, once the monies have been transferred, Victoria Police has no ability to track the recipients of such money transfers. If you buy things via EBay or the like use Pay Pal or similar type accounts.

The main piece of advice I can give people is that if the deal seems too good to be true then it probably is. Use your common sense with these matters and you should be scam free.

On a self indulgent note, congratulations to the Clunes Bowling Club on a very successful season. The Mid Week Division 6 team, who won their grand final against City Oval. The Saturday Pennant Division 4 team finally got the monkey off the back by defeating Midlands Golf in the grand final. The Saturday Pennant Division 6 team were just pipped at the post in their grand final against Midlands Golf, a fine effort in their first year in Div 6. The Clunes Bowling Club is a great social club within the town and I would recommend any potential bowlers out there to come along and have a go, we are always on the lookout for new members.

The very best of luck to the Clunes Footy and Netball Club, both juniors and seniors in the upcoming season and more importantly for the Geelong Cats as they go for a 4th flag in

PACKING UP THE CLUNES MUSEUM COLLECTION

The Clunes Museum received a fantastic response to its request for volunteers to assist with packing up the Museum’s collection in preparation for the construction of the Clunes Community and Interpretive Centre. While planning for the pack up has commenced, the intensive work will commence after Back to Booktown in May. We expect this will take between three and four months to complete.

We would like to thank the Clunes community for its continued support of the Museum and extend a special thank you to those

people who have volunteered to assist with the pack up of the collection.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT BOOKSBOOKS BOUGHT & SOLD10% off Children’s & Youth Fiction books April 7-15

After two years, first as a volunteer and for the last 17 months as Manager, as of February 1st , 2012, my passion for the bookshop took over and I became the owner the Booktown Bookshop, buying the enterprise from the Creative Clunes Board.  We are now called “We’re All About Books”, and continue in the same location at 54 Fraser Street.

Donations are still accepted for Creative Clunes and Words in Winter. If you are leaving a donation please be sure to mention who you wish it to go to, to whoever is in the shop at the time. We are no longer able to accommodate small consignments (under 50 books), but will consider purchasing directly for small quantities. Although, now a private enterprise some former volunteers still come in to help out, so you will be sure to see a familiar and friendly face. I look forward to greeting you at “We’re All About Books”.Pam Adams

NEW COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARDThe C.T.D.A has been successful in obtaining a Community Grant through the Hepburn Shire.

The money will be used to design and construct a new Community Notice Board by local talented artist Clayton Edwards.

The board will be relocated on the side wall of “We’re All About Books” (previously Booktown Bookshop) Cnr. Fraser and Service Streets.

Once completed, all future notices, adverts etc can be dropped off at “We’re All About Books” – which is open 7 days a week and they will be placed in for you.

Notices will be monitored daily so everything is up to date.

All going well we hope to have the new board in position by start of May.

HEPBURN SHIRE BUDGET 2012-13Stay informed and involved in decisions that affect youCouncil began preparing its 2012-13 budget in November last year and on Friday 20 April will release the proposed budget for community feedback.

If you’re interested in hearing about decisions that affect your community, now is the time to speak to your councillor and to attend your next ward meeting. Cr Neil Newitt will discuss priority projects in the Clunes Ward and explain the budget process in more detail.

Clunes budget information sessionCr Neil Newitt will host a special Clunes budget information meeting on Monday 14 May at the Clunes Town Hall from 6-8pm. Here he will talk you through the specifics of the proposed 2012-13 budget and how it affects you.

All residents and ratepayers are strongly encouraged to come along to this meeting; this is a great opportunity to hear about priorities in the Clunes ward (and shire-wide) and ask any questions you may have about the budget.

Make a budget submissionWritten budget submissions are welcome and will be accepted for 28 days from Saturday 21 April. If you would like to make written budget submission, speak to your councillor or visit www.hepburnshire.com.au for information.

REVIEW OF CLUNES COMMUNITY PLANFirst developed in 2009 the Clunes Community Plan is due for a review. Priority actions in the current Plan are:

• To support the development of community activities.

• Review sports facilities location to consider the feasibility of one central location or the development of existing facilities.

• Work to improve public transport including train, bus and local taxi services.

• Effectively maintain and improve heritage buildings and heritage sites.

• Support Clunes Museum redevelopment.

• Improve safety at Clunes Primary School

A lot of progress has been made against these actions.

With this in mind, there will be a community meeting in early June to review progress and identify any new actions or initiatives to include in the Clunes Community Plan.

Hepburn Shire Council supports the development of community plans because “Community planning will build the capacity of our local communities and create places which are highly valued by residents and that “We think the plans which communities prepare for themselves should guide Council’s development priorities” (Council Plan 2009-13). Community planning is a whole community process and everyone in the community is invited to participate.

This is a note to give you time to put your ideas together for the review meeting.

Keep your eyes peeled for the notice of meeting.
