CTDA PRESIDENT’S REPORTNew Town Signs

Flood relief funding will provide new town signs for Clunes plus upgraded road signs. The CTDA has researched the design for the town sign and agreed on a streetscape of Fraser Street as the featured image for Clunes with “Victoria’s First Gold Town and Booktown” listed.

Clunes Nurse-on-call Service

This issue has been bogged down as we have not received responses from the Minister’s office. The Clunes Health Committee is now planning our next move, which we don’t wish to telegraph to the other parties. Watch this space.

Clunes Community & Interpretive Centre

The planning permit for the upgraded Clunes Museum went through recently after much work by the reference group and council officers. Thanks to Jane Lesock for presenting a submission from the CTDA to the Council meeting.

The powers that be, in relation to the Clunes railway station are seeking to reinstate a verandah to the station, similar to the design at Creswick station.

CLUNES COMMUNITY NEWS 3

G’day everyone, firstly I would like to apologise for not having an article in the last newsletter, I have been told that some look forward to reading the article. I was on leave and therefore missed the deadline, sorry. So the crime roundup for Dec, Jan and Feb…..

In December, there were two reported thefts in the area. One involving the theft of sheep from a property north of the township and the other involving the theft of gardening equipment from a residential house in the Fairview Estate.

In January, there were two thefts in relation to farming equipment, one being a trailer with a large water tank attached and the other was in relation to water troughs and various attachments. There was also a burglary on a business premises in Clunes where computer equipment was stolen.

In February, one offender was charged with offences in relation to lighting a fire in a fire restriction period. The offender was burning off rubbish and failed to extinguish the fire properly and the Clunes CFA were required to respond. This is a very timely warning to those who fail to adhere to the fire restrictions, the CFA have been informed to report ALL fires that occur in the area to police and police WILL

charge any person who has lit a fire during the restriction periods. There was also an offender charged in relation to committing two burglaries, one being on the Smeaton Bowling Club and the other on the Clunes Recreational Centre, during the month of February.

Any info in relation to the above offences would be greatly appreciated.

On the 13th of February, I attended at a very serious motor vehicle collision that occurred on the Clunes – Daylesford Road at Ullina. Two vehicles collided and 6 people, including 3 very young children, were all injured and taken to the Ballarat Base Hospital. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. The road condition played a major part in the causation of the collision but inevitably ALL collisions come down to some form of driver error. I would ask that everyone please take care when driving, pay attention and drive to the road conditions.

Until next newsletter, stay safe….

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERSVolunteer vacancies are currently available at our Clunes Campus particularly for new volunteers for our Meals on Wheels roster. The commitment is only approximately 1 hour per month, or you could just choose to go on the Meals on Wheels emergency roster only to fill in when a rostered volunteer is unwell or away. A vehicle is provided. It is important that we are able to fill the meals on wheels roster and to ensure that the work is shared with regular volunteers so that individual volunteers are not called upon too often. Meals on Wheels is one of the very valuable services offered to older people and younger people with disabilities in our community to enable them to remain in their own homes longer if they choose to.Delivering meals is a great volunteering opportunity for people with school aged children as it fits in with school hours. Perhaps you have a partner or friend you can sign up with to deliver meals together? If you can spare just an hour a month assisting with Meals on Wheels, or if you would like further information about other volunteer opportunities available, please do not hesitate to contact me.

All volunteers are required to undergo a police records check. This is at no cost to the volunteer.Janine Fleming, Community Services Coordinator53 21 6556/0457 851- [email protected]

CLUNES BACK TO BOOKTOWN

Preparations are well underway for Clunes Booktown - the Festival of the Book to be held over the weekend of 5-6 May. Once again there will be plenty to see and do.

Children’s BooktownThis year a feature will be Children’s Booktown when, with the magic of Clayton Edwards, the library turns itself into the land of Narnia. Walk through the wardrobe into an amazing world, listen to a story, get involved with craft activities or sit in the very special story reading chair and have your photo taken.

We still need to borrow synthetic Christmas trees (no decoration) for the weekend. Please let Catherine at the Library know if you can lend your tree.

Also for children and the young at heart there will be face painting, balloon art and the very special Punch and Judy man with three shows a day.

EntertainmentOther features include Creswick Brass Band, Wesley Big Band, Eric the Red street entertainer, buskers, the Australia Fair Grand Street Organ. Nicholas Jones, a book sculptor will be in the Town Hall making work and the art group are constructing a giant hay bale maze which we’ll position in Fraser Street. There will also be a giant chess set. All the usual food and drink stalls and more.

Over 60 booksellers of rare, out-of-print, curious and new books will be setting up shop in Clunes.

SpeakersThe speaking program includes the writers Peter Goldsworthy – whose book Maestro is on VCE curriculum, his daughter the concert pianist and memoir writer Anna Goldsworthy, the novelist Nicholas Jose and Alice Pung. Australian Book Review editor Peter Rose will be joined by Michael Heyward, the publisher at the prestigious publishing house Text, and Michael Williams, the director of the Melbourne Wheeler Centre for Books, Ideas and Writing will also be chairing sessions. The historian Geoffrey Blainey will be in conversation with our very own Clunes resident Andrew Reeves and ABC Radio National will record Lynne Malcolm (from All in the Mind) as she chairs a panel on science and ethics with speakers Gina Perry and Justin Oakley.

There will also be workshops offered in the mornings of both weekend days and the association of small publishers will be here meeting potential writers or those interested in a career in publishing.

Nicolas Jones, a book sculptor will be making artworks over the weekend and the State Library of Victoria will be bringing to Booktown a selection of rare and very precious books from their collection.

Street ClosureFraser Street will be closed between Service and Templeton Sts from 9.00 am Friday morning. Provision will be made for School bus drop off on

Friday afternoon If any of our senior citizens require a lift to and from Fraser St on Sat or Sun … please see the April Newsletter for details. On Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm Bailey St will be closed between Service and Templeton Streets.

AdmissionThis year we are engaging professional event managers to cover our increased publicity campaign and to offer advice generally. It’s all part of getting better and better. But it comes at a cost and so we will be charging a small admission fee of $5 and $2 concession at the entrance. In return visitors will receive a booktown badge and unlimited entry to all events over the weekend. (Please note the workshops are ticketed at an additional $10 and $6. Please check the website updates, details and tickets.) Toddlers (pre-school age), and all volunteers are free.

Become a VolunteerOnce again we will need an army of volunteers on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If many of us do a single shift of 3 hours it shares out the burden. Volunteers are needed in a variety of jobs from driving the mini bus, to helping erect and pull down marquees, taking the $5/2 entry fee, giving out information, looking after the speaking tent, looking after the VIPs in the VIP lounge, supervising buildings, helping out in the volunteer kitchen, selling books at the speaker’s talks, looking after the VIP parking space, putting up and taking down road blocks in Bailey Street, handing out programs, etc etc…So yes there is something for you. All volunteers are lent an apron and given a booktown entry badge. Call into We’re All About Books (Community Bookshop) and put your name down for a shift.

SponsorsWe are again fortunate to have on board our corporate sponsors – the Hepburn Shire (including the Clunes Library), Tourism Victoria, La Trobe University, Easy Mix Ten 71 Radio, McPhersons Printing Group, The Wheeler Centre for Books, Ideas & Writing, Wesley College, RiAus and the Creswick & District Community Bank.

In addition to businesses advertising in the Official Program, cash donations to support street entertainment or our media campaign has been offered (as at 20 February) by AAG Property Services, the Clunes News Agency, Spa Country Pty Ltd, The Widow Twankey’s Confectionery Emporium, The Clunes Greengrocer and the CTDA.

Community Bookshop and We’re All About Books

TWO NEW BOOKSHOP BUSINESSES FOR CLUNES At the vanguard of Australian cultural community, Clunes is welcoming two new businesses to its Main Street this month as a result of an innovative incubator approach developed by the Clunes community lead by Creative Clunes.

The Clunes Community Bookshop has been sold to its manager Pam Adams and Miss Agatha Green’s Quality Bookshop will be run as business by James Curzon-Siggers and Kay Mathews.

The new owners are excited by the potential for future growth and local employment.

“The Creative Clunes cultural business model is an Australian first,” says Creative Clunes spokesperson Tim Hayes. “Two years ago we leased empty shops in our main street and with the efforts of our dedicated band of community volunteers these have now been transformed into thriving bookshops.”

“We are delighted that locals trained by Creative Clunes will now be operating successful private enterprises that in turn will employ other locals.”

“In paying tribute to the bookshop volunteers, Mr Hayes indicated the Creative Clunes’ journey will continue.

“With these two bookshops now successfully launched, Creative Clunes and its many supporters and volunteers will now be taking on new challenges to build on”

Even though the bookshops have been transferred into private operation Creative Clunes is still seeking donations of books. Previously the proceeds from the sale of donated books assisted in employing a part time manager. These funds will now be directed to staging and continuously improving the Children’s Booktown segment of Back to Booktown. Books can be left with Pam Adams at We’re All About Books at 54 Fraser Street.
