The Clunes Farmers' Market has entered a new era with a new committee being elected at the recent Annual General Meeting. They are as follows:

Chair: Chris Culvenor Immediate Past Chair: Leanne

Kamp Vice Chair: Stephen Arrowsmith Secretary: Stuart Walters Treasurer: Yolanda Palumbo Committee: Geordie Haintz,

Graeme Grigson, Maria Alexiou, Beat Wittwer

The Committee is committed to maintaining a high quality farmers' market accredited with the Victorian Farmers' Market Association. The VFMA membership has proven

particularly useful in advertising and promotion as well as training and information sharing with other market organisers.

The focus of the new Committee will be two fold, firstly promoting the market to new stallholders which will complement the existing loyal stallholders at the market, and secondly, promote Clunes as a destination for the benefit of the market and all local businesses. A video of the Clunes Farmers Market is currently being planned and produced by Dylan Weihahn of Spring Pictures.

I am proud of what the market has achieved so far. We have had the great fortune of receiving several

government grants from both Regional Development Victoria and the Shire of Hepburn. I am proud of the resilience of our market and committee members when put under stress. I am proud of our top quality farmers' market stallholders and I am proud of our past and present hardworking committee members.

There are so many people that make the market's wheels turn, and some unsung heroes that deserve a huge thank you. They are Chris Culvenor for his tireless work in assisting with the market, particularly over the past 12 months, Natalie Hardy-Hurst for her Facebook promotion, Kate Ferguson, Winner of Zumbo's Just Desserts, for accepting the position of Clunes Farmers' Market Ambassador, Adel Urie for her promotional IT work, Noelene Gration for her consultancy and marketing, CTDA for auspicing the market, and Tamara and Michelle at the Shire of Hepburn who have both gone above and beyond with their help.

The Clunes Farmers' Market is a great meeting place for locals and I would like to thank the wonderful people of Clunes who regularly support the market. We have a lovely friendly market in the best town in Victoria!

While the new defribulator has been on site for a few months now, we had the official launch of the equipment just recently. This defribulator is available 24 hours 7 days a week, and can be operated by anyone as you just have to take it out of the metal box and push the start button. The machine speaks to you and will not go to the next step until you have completed the current direction. Too easy!!!

This is all part of the All Nations Lodge support of the local community through grants which have been obtained by the Freemasons Foundation and the Creswick & District Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank, who are both great supporters of matters local.

Many have heard of freemasons but are not sure what we do. I am a freemason and the organisation has existed at least for more than 8 centuries. Freemasons have been involved in many events throughout history. The Boston Tea Party was held by the local Boston Masonic Lodge to complain that taxes were too high. Many notable people have been freemasons including Prime Ministers, Presidents and the Royal family. The current Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England is Prince Michael of Kent. Many sports people such as Don Bradman and musicians such as Mozart and Beethoven were freemasons.

Today freemasons are seen more as helping their local community and enjoying each others’ company. If you are interested in perhaps joining the Clunes Lodge, please contact me on [email protected]. I can give you more about what we do.

Clunes 20th Community Dinner By Jane Lesock

Where have the years gone? It is amazing a small town like Clunes has hosted this dinner to acknowledge and thank the many dedicated volunteers we have.

Nominations Forms for the 2017 - 2018 Citizens are now available from Ken at the Clunes Newsagency, so please have a think about who you would like to nominate. Closing date 15th July 2017

For those new people to Clunes or for those that have forgotten who has been our past Citizens, the Honour Board is in the foyer of the Warehouse. On my recent trip to England I had the pleasure to meet Martin Clunes and Caroline Quentin in Port Isaac on the Cornwall coast where they were filming an episode of Doc Martin. With hundreds of other onlookers trying to get close to Martin I was fortunate to be "in the right place at the right time". I introduced myself "Hi Martin I'm Jane from Clunes Australia and he replied "oh what a pleasure to meet you Jane, you do know it was named after me"!! I did not waste the opportunity and asked for a photo and also invited Martin to Clunes for our Booktown Festival. You never know, he may turn up one day.

Clunes Crime Round-up By Athol (Chaffs) Chaffey

G’Day everyone. Today’s newsletter article is a bit different. I have been asked as to why the police telephone diverts to Bacchus Marsh when I am off duty and not Ballarat or Maryborough, which are obviously closer. So in an attempt to dispel some of the inaccuracies, misunderstandings and untruths, here is an explanation of the ‘system’.

Most importantly, Clunes has, and will always have, a 24 hour, 7 days a week Police Response, the same as every other square inch of the state. For police purposes, the state of Victoria is divided into 4 Regions. Metropolitan Melbourne, approx. 30-40 km radius from Bourke St, is split in half with North Western Region and South Eastern Region. The rest of the state is divided up the middle, roughly from Broadmeadows to Echuca, and we have the last 2 Regions, being Eastern Region and our part of the world Western Region.

Western Region is then divided into 5 Divisions. Divisions are then further divided into smaller areas called Police Service Areas (PSA). The PSA follow the boundaries of Local Government Areas (LGA), so we are stuck with the lines that some outdated surveyor drew on a map in the 1800’s, and as such, we are within the Moorabool Police Service Area. In a nut shell, our lovely little town falls under Western Region – Division 3 – Moorabool PSA – Clunes.

Moorabool PSA is made up of all the police stations that are located within the Moorabool Shire (Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, and Gordon), Golden Plains Shire (Inverleigh, Bannockburn, Meredith, Rokewood, Smythesdale and Linton) and our Hepburn Shire (Trentham, Daylesford, Creswick and Clunes). The only 24 hour police station within the Moorabool PSA is Bacchus Marsh and as such, is the supervisory station for all of the stations listed above, Clunes included. The other stations are all either 16 hour stations or 1 man stations (8 hour stations).

To add to the confusion, the other PSA within Division 3 is Ballarat PSA. Western Region – Division 3 – Ballarat PSA is made up of stations within the Ballarat and Pyrenees Shires i.e. Ballarat, Ballarat North, Ballarat West, Buninyong, Learmonth, Beaufort, Lexton, Avoca and Landsborough.

Maryborough Police station is a 24 hour police station but is located within Western Region – Division 4. Although they are not responsible for my area, they have at times come down the road and helped me out with jobs etc. So, within all PSA’s, stations are clustered together, usually neighbouring stations. Clunes and Creswick are clustered together and as such, we look after each other’s patch, i.e. if Creswick are not working I cover both Creswick and Clunes and vice versa.

My phone is diverted to Bacchus Marsh Police Station if I am on a day off, at court, at a job/task, interviewing a crook, in a meeting, dealing with a victim or other enquiry. I hope that clears up some of the confusion as to why my phone diverts to Bacchus Marsh as it is my supervisory station and the only 24-hour station within my area.

If you are the victim of a crime, including but not limited to, theft of your car, burglary of your house/shed, ANY family violence matters, assault, damage or theft of your belongings, suspect loiterers etc., ALWAYS ring 000 and the nearest police unit will attend to your needs, that may be me, or it may

be a police officer from Creswick, Learmonth, Lexton, Daylesford, Ballarat etc. Police from outside the Moorabool PSA will attend to any emergency if they are the nearest police unit.

If you need to speak to me to organise to have some documents signed, seek advice for something, complain about your neighbour’s dog barking, organise something to do with your firearms licence or any other general enquiry or complaint, ring the Clunes Police Station and IF the phone is diverted to Bacchus Marsh leave a message for me to contact you and I will do my best to get back to you.

As you can imagine there are times when I am the nearest police unit to an incident, be it at Learmonth, Creswick, Daylesford, Lexton etc. and as such, I may be away from Clunes dealing with it or helping other police units at those locations.

I know that the majority of the town support both me and Victoria Police and for that I am very thankful. Reducing crime is not the sole responsibility of Victoria Police, it is a community issue and if we work together we can make real inroads. I look forward to the commencement of the Clunes Community Neighbourhood Watch Coffee Group and its inaugural meeting. The rate of crime in our town is relatively small in numbers compared to Ballarat and larger towns, but I understand that being the victim of a crime is quite distressing, and I do my very best to prevent crime in our lovely little town, because I too live here in sunny Clunes. I hope this clears up some of the confusion. Now to the Crime Wrap Up for 15th May-14th June.

Burglary from a holiday house in Dunach area, food/alcohol/tools stolen – previously burglary in March.

Burglary x 2 on same Property in Fairview on consecutive days.

Burglary on another Holiday Home in Dunach area, quad bike stolen.

Burglary on a shed near Mount Beckworth, tools and solar equip stolen.

Burglary at the Footy Club, alcohol stolen.

Theft of a mobile phone from out the front of Bread & Circus

Theft of a trailer – Footy Club Scoreboard trailer – from Fraser Street on Booktown weekend.

Offender processed re traffic matters and resisting arrest, awaiting court outcome.

As you can see, there are still a few burglaries in and around the town. Please still make sure that your homes, sheds and cars are locked at all times, even if you are at home.

Continuing to issue tickets in and around the town, speed, seat belts and mobile phone use. Also with the inevitable crappy weather, have a quick look at your cars, i.e. tyres headlights/taillights and wipers. A five-minute check might save you some heartache down the road. I am also still getting reports of the highway boys charging drink drivers in the area, no one local in the last month or so.

Until next newsletter, look after each other and stay safe. As I always say I am YOUR local copper and can be contacted on station number 5345 3211, mobile number 0427 683 940, fax number 5345 3794 or email at [email protected]

If you need police attendance for an emergency situation ALWAYS rings 000.

Official Opening 24/7 Defribulator for Clunes By Michael Cheshire

With a view to making it healthier to both live in and visit Clunes, the members of the All Nations Masonic Lodge have raised enough funds to install a 24/7 defribulator in the main street of Clunes.

The installed defribulator was officially opened by those responsible for the funding of the purchase and installation of the life-saving equipment. Andre Clayton as a Director of the

Freemasons Foundation, Sue Armstrong Manager of the Bendigo Bank Creswick and Gary Elliott Worshipful Master of All Nations Lodge Clunes all made funding contributions while Dianne Hill, Manager of the local IGA Supermarket in Clunes made the site available for locals and visitors to readily find this life saving equipment in the heart of Clunes.

“We at All Nations Lodge saw a need to provide this vital equipment for our local community and visitors to Clunes, so we worked through a plan to raise funds for the defribulator.” said Gary Elliott. “We are grateful to the Freemasons Foundation and the Bendigo Bank for their contributions and especially our local IGA Supermarket who provided this valuable site for installation.”

The All Nations lodge at Clunes is regularly supporting their local community with seeking grants for important equipment and other valuable services in Clunes.

The Four L’s Hike for Fred Hollows By Lily Mason

Back in late May, the Four L’s of Clunes: Lily, Lois, Leslie and Leanne, hiked a whopping 30 kilometres through sand and (almost) sea to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation.

We were thrilled to raise $2790 for the organisation, with huge thanks to our amazing sponsors.

Having your support really made a difference to our ability to complete the walk: we knew you were with us every step of the way.

Romping it in in just 6.5 hours, we were very proud of our efforts. Mind you we did have a ferry to catch!

Neighbourly Natter By Lana de Kort

When Clunes Neighbourhood House explores what makes a good neighbourhood, we are often drawn to discussions that have happened around the world about place making. About 10 years ago there was a book published called the Great Neighbourhood Book: A Do It Yourself Guide to Placemaking. It’s an easy read, full of examples of great neighbourhoods around the world, and

the journey they travelled to get there. The book is a collaboration between Jay Walljasper, an American community strengthening consultant, and international NFP, Project for Public Spaces (www.pps.org). It explores 16 different ways you can enhance your neighbourhood and is a down to earth and (in Clunes an) oddly familiar read.

1. Dare to Dream—your imagination is the most important resource when it comes to transforming your neighbourhood

2. Take the Time to Enjoy your Surroundings—don’t get too busy you can’t enjoy what is around you

3. Stir up a Little Hope—any neighbourhood can be lifted by positive action

4. Better to Ask Forgiveness than Permission—take action when it’s important

5. A Community Renaissance is Easier than you Think—change can start with the simplest of things

6. Reinvent the Village in the Heart of the City—creating lively business districts

7. Take a Stroll—good for your health, and good for the vitality of the neighbourhood

8. Be a Local Economy Hero—‘use it or lose it’ and know it’s ok to share the love around

9. Build on What’s Good to Make your Community Better—capitalising on opportunities may be more important than problem solving

10. Take to the Streets—lively neighbourhoods are safer neighbourhoods

11. Celebrate our Place in the World—evoke the spirit of your neighbourhood in song, print, paint or whatever medium works for you

12. Do Nothing in Particular—sometimes it’s important to simply enjoy what you’ve got

13. The Power of a Public Pizza Oven (or Community Dinner or Footy meal after training or Local’s Night or…in Clunes it goes on)—shared spaces and opportunities to come together as a community

14. Great Places Grow from Humble Petunia Patches—don’t underestimate the power of small things to turnaround a neighbourhood

15. Save the Planet Right on Your Own Block—local efforts are the backbone of green activism

16. Think Globally, Eat Locally—food grown close to home not only tastes better, but serves us other benefits for your local farmers and community

I remembered this book early last month when I followed some of the discussion threads on Facebook about what is available in Clunes or what might be great to have in the future. That discussion sparked our attempt on the inside pages of the newsletter to capture just a few of the things you can do or access in Clunes that make this town a great neighbourhood to live in. We’ve pulled them together for you, but we realise we’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg. It’s reminded us we need to get cracking with a new local phone book, and a welcome pack for new residents. Looks like next month is going to be a busy one!

Jay Walljasper has a good blog that expands on his list above at http://www.onthecommons.org/magazine/16-ways-make-your-neighborhood-safer-greener-and-more-fun

Clunes Trekkers—New

A team of local intrepid walkers raised funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation in May by walking 30 km along the Victorian coastline, and along the way, discovered a love of trekking that will no doubt take the town by storm.

BUSHWALK ANYONE? If you are interested in exploring the Goldfields Track and other walks and trails around the district you might want to join up with the Clunes Trekkers! We are planning a monthly walk (maybe more), weekends or weekdays, minimum 10 km and up to 20 km and usually with a coffee somewhere (beginning, end or along the way).

There are some amazing walks to be had: Mt Beckworth on our door, around the lake in Learmonth, and of course sections of the Goldfields Track. Who knows we may progress to The Overland Track in Tassie or Larapinta (NT) in the future! If you want to don the hiking boots, check out our Facebook page Clunes Trekkers or contact Lois Nichols 0467331136 or Leslie Scott 0418579415.

Journaling Workshop

To be conducted by our own Clunes Art Therapist Nasci Lethlean. Journaling will show you not only how to record your creative process but to understand why it is so beneficial. Why it helps to develop new ideas and increase motivation.

Venue: Lee Medlyn Home of Bottles Date: Sunday 23rd July 2017 Time: 10.30am - TBA Cost: $5- tea and coffee provided Materials: Bring your journal or book to write in.

Bookings at the Clunes Neighbourhood House on 5345 4078. General enquiries to Marlene Tozer 5345 3093.

Notes from the Past Articles from the Clunes Guardian and Gazette July 1887

I was pleased to see in your last issue that reference was made to the cow pest which is a plague to Clunes residents. The other evening I was coming out of my garden and fell all fours over one of these wanderers, which was evidently camped for the night. Fortunately I was not injured. I think it is a shame that the thoroughfares of Clunes should be allowed to be turned into cow yards because the owners of the cows, who are not satisfied with feeding their cattle on the cheap, want go to the trouble of yarding them at night time. If the Police want assistance I can name a dozen willing hands who will be ready to aide them to put a stop to the wandering cow nuisance.

Her Place Women’s Museum

The Warehouse, Fraser St., Clunes 12 August—3 September

Her Place Women’s Museum Australia is hosting a free exhibition that honours the lives and contributions of women throughout Victoria. The fourth in a series of exhibitions presented by Her Place Women’s Museum, it celebrates the work, achievements and historical significance of women through video interviews, biographical accounts and personal artefacts.

The exhibition tells the stories of ten women from across the state, including central Victoria. These women have contributed to Australian society at both national and local levels through their work, actions and activities. The group includes a former state premier, the first Australian woman to climb Mt Everest and the first female AFL coach.

A feature of the exhibition is a focus on women who have been inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. Established in 2001, the Honour Roll pays tribute to women who have been pioneers in their field and who have improved the lives of women and the broader Victorian community.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a program of public discussions, educational programs, resources and workshops that explore current and topical issues affecting women of all ages today.

Clunes Better Health Project Update July 2017

Mental Health First Aid Training

A two day standard mental health first aid training course was recently delivered by Hepburn Health at the Warehouse in Clunes. 15 participants completed the course, who on the whole thought the training was very valuable and came away with greater confidence, knowledge and skills in being able to assist someone who may be experiencing mental health first aid problems. Participants generally enjoyed the delivery of the course spread across two weeks, commenting that this allowed them to process the content more effectively. The Clunes Better Health Project Steering Committee hopes to continue to address mental health issues in the community over the coming year.

June Health Tip – Focus on fruit

It is recommended that most Australians eat 2 serves of fruit per day, although this does differ for toddlers and children, and those with higher energy requirements. But what exactly is a serve of fruit?

A standard serve of fruit is approximately 150g or 350 kJ or in other words:

1 medium apple, banana, orange or pear, peach, nectarine 2 small apricots, kiwi fruits or plums 1 cup diced or canned fruit (no added sugar) Or occasionally: 125ml (1/2 cup) fruit juice (no added sugar) 30g dried fruit (e.g. 4 dried apricot halves, 11/2 tablespoons of sultanas)

Eating fresh, whole fruits is a better option than consuming fruit juices and dried fruits as fresh fruits are lower in energy (kilojoules), high in dietary fibre and water making them more filling, and they won’t stick to your teeth increasing your risk of tooth decay. Fruit juices and dried fruits should only be consumed occasionally.

Fruit can be added to your breakfast cereal, to salads, low-fat muffins and scones and form the basis for a range of healthy and nutritious desserts, or why not just enjoy fruit on its own as a snack between meals.

Booktown on Sunday Author Talk Nick Richardson ‘Game of Their Lives’ By Lily Mason

Sunday 16th July 2pm at The Warehouse - Clunes.

As the Great War raged in 1916, two teams of Australian soldiers played an Australian Rules football match in London. It was the first time the world had seen our national game. But this was more than an exhibition match. It symbolised sport's role in driving young athletes to enlist and fight.

The players came from every corner of the country - some of them stars in the VFL or champions in their city or state leagues. For all of them it was a chance to forget blood and battle and simply play, a final kick of the footy before the Western Front, from where some would never return.

Now, 100 years on, Nick Richardson rekindles an incredible moment in our history and pays tribute to the men who played The Game of Their Lives.

Chaired by Keir Reeves, meet the author, journalist Nick Richardson. Nick has worked on newspapers and magazines in Australia and England. He has been a Margaret George fellow at the National Archives of Australia and a research fellow at the Australian Prime Ministers Centre. A FREE event. Sponsored by Dilmac Media, Creative Clunes and Hepburn Shire Council.

6 Degrees of Separation-A Surprise Encounter at Clunes Booktown Festival 2017 By Penny Rayner, Riverside, Tasmania

While sitting waiting for my coffee at Quigley and Clarke Cafe Restaurant on the first day of the Clunes Booktown this year, I invited a lady who was also waiting - only standing, to take a seat at my table. Once seated I enquired how she came to be at the festival and she told me she was an author and had published her first book1 under the nom de plume Suzambia2. It happens that the book was about Zambia and as her pen name implies, she also hailed from Zambia3.

Well that got my interest. "Oh, have you read Africa House?" I asked. "Yes, as a matter of fact I'm related to the people who used to live there" she replied. Wow! "So am I" I replied. It turns out we are both related to Sir Thomas Gore

Browne who was the grandfather of the person who built Africa House (Sir Stewart Gore Browne) in what was then Northern Rhodesia.

Thomas Gore Browne was Suzanna's great, great, grandfather and my great, great, granduncle. That makes us 4th cousins. Talk about 6 degrees of separation!

Penny was staying in Clunes with friends Patsy and Ray Skinner for Booktown Weekend. 1Suzanmbia’s book is ‘Ninety Daze in Lusaka’. 2 Suzambia is Suzanna Fisher in real life-see her web page www.90daze.com for further details. 3 Although she was born in Zambia and returned there in 1992, Suzanna has travelled widely, lived in various countries and now is finally settled on the Sunshine Coast.

Clunes Football Netball Club By David Dorizzi

Being a part of the CFNC is not just about how well we perform on the field, but more importantly how we perform off the field. At every opportunity, the club is looking to invest in the people who make the club what it is.

On Sunday the 25th June, Hepburn Health and the Creswick Lions Club held a performance that tackled the issue of Relationship violence.

The ‘You the Man’ performance is a theatre-based education program for initiating bystander engagement and violence prevention. It addresses issues which contribute to unhealthy relationships and dating violence and aims to promote equal and respectful relationships between men and women and girls and boys, as well as improve access to resources and support.

It was great to see a fantastic turn out to the event from all junior grades, netball and football. This will no doubt create future opportunities for our kids to grow.
