The AOPA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association. The AOPA Foundation raises funds that support safety, growing the pilot population, and airport preservation–which includes AOPA’s You Can Fly program and Air Safety Institute. Both of these lifesaving, life-changing programs are funded through charitable gifts from generous donors who make contributions above and beyond their AOPA membership dues. Together, we are building a stronger, safer pilot community to protect our freedom to fly.

The AOPA Foundation, Inc., a tax-exempt charitable, educational, and scientific organization, will educate the general public on the value of general aviation. The AOPA Foundation works to improve aviation safety, preserve and improve community airports, and encourages learning to fly for career and personal benefit – all in the interest of ensuring the future of general aviation in America.

the AOPA Foundation reached genuine and

measurable objectives in 2019 by providing the

Air Safety Institute and You Can Fly program with

much needed funding to fuel the lifesaving, life-

changing work they do.

In 2019, the AOPA Air Safety Institute continued to broaden its ever-increasing reach by delivering safety courses, videos, and reports that were utilized more than 7.7 million times last year alone. The Air Safety Institute is the largest provider of free aviation safety content in the world and guides the culture of aviation safety. Your contributions ensure these materials stay up-to-date and relevant.

AOPA’s You Can Fly program released additional coursework to support the High School aviation education programs that open doors to aerospace-based careers for thousands of high school students nationwide. We are on course to deliver the full four-year suite of aviation curriculum by 2021.

Since the You Can Fly program began in 2014, it has recognized hundreds of flight schools and CFIs for delivering exceptional training experiences, launched more than 135 flying clubs to help provide greater access to aircraft and community, and welcomed more than 7,700 formerly rusty pilots back into the pilot seat.

Thanks to you, these programs are making a meaningful, significant impact every single day. By donating to the AOPA Foundation, you have a direct influence on our ability to keep these programs—and our aviation community—growing. For nearly 70 years, the AOPA Air Safety Institute has led the general aviation industry in creating and shaping new safety initiatives through engaging education, industry collaboration, research and analysis, and community outreach.

DATA ANALYSISInsightful and accurate accident analysis and research are foundational to the Air Safety Institute’s successful production of materials, outreach in the aviation community, and influence on the general aviation safety culture. It provides the most comprehensive and widely used analysis of general aviation accidents in the industry. Continuous research and analysis of data ensures that the Air Safety Institute is concentrating its efforts on providing relevant and appropriate materials to address current and future needs of general aviation safety.

Despite an increase in flight activity, the general aviation fatal accident rate trend is at an all-time low. The Air Safety Institute assumes significant responsibility to influence and guide the continuing development of a robust safety culture. It is responding to demands for fresh, relevant material that is easily accessible. The program is dedicated to meeting pilots where they are with engaging safety messaging that positively impacts aeronautical decision making.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT The Air Safety Institute constantly adapts to rapidly changing information consumption patterns to allow new and engaging materials to meet pilots where, when, and how they choose. Videos, podcasts, and social media are ubiquitous, and we are leveraging these modern platforms and expanding our visibility as an effective means of broadening the safety message to pilots around the world.

Content for consumable material is continuously updated with high quality, engaging, and insightful educational material that promote safer flight training practices. Creating this data-driven subject matter enables pilots to become part of a safer aviation community and is crucial to the Air Safety Institute’s mission.

DELIVERY & OUTREACHThe Air Safety Institute reaches modern audiences with its YouTube channel, Facebook page, website, and podcasts—while also continuing use of more traditional seminars. The Air Safety Institute’s Flight Instructor Refresher Courses (FIRC) renew more flight instructors each year than any other CFI renewal program in the industry. A General Aviation Safety Award is presented annually to raise awareness of individuals and groups that make extraordinary contributions to the general aviation community. The Air Safety Institute also partners with many organizations focused on aviation safety to provide a unified effort in reaching our safety goals.

By reaching pilots and future pilots at key points in their journey, You Can Fly is introducing a new generation to aviation careers, helping improve the flight training experience, making flying more affordable and accessible, and getting lapsed pilots back in the air.

With a series of ambitious, measurable goals, each of the four You Can Fly initiatives is making a difference for the aviation community.

HIGH SCHOOL The High School initiative provides premium STEM-based aviation education to students. Ninth- and tenth-grade courses are currently available nationwide, while eleventh-grade courses will be available for the 2020-2021 school year. Field testing for the twelfth-grade courses will take place during the 2020-2021 school year, and the full four-year curriculum will be available the following year. The program is provided free to schools and includes everything teachers need, including detailed lesson plans, presentations, activities, projects, and assessments.

FLIGHT TRAINING Learning to fly is a formative experience for every pilot. The Flight Training initiative aims to make it a great one. Through a combination of technology, training, support, and recognition, the initiative is helping flight schools create the kinds of training experiences that keep pilots coming back. The Flight Training Experience Awards recognize schools and instructors that do it right. And a new two-day customer service course gives schools the tools to develop a culture of excellence.

FLYING CLUBS Greater access to aircraft at lower cost—plus a community of fellow pilots to share the fun. That’s just some of what flying clubs can deliver to members, and that’s why the Flying Clubs initiative is helping launch, grow, and support clubs nationwide. With extensive online resources, workshops, and even one-on-one assistance, it’s never been easier to start a new club and share the advantages of aircraft ownership.

RUSTY PILOTS Sometimes life gets in the way of flying. But once a pilot, always a pilot. And when lapsed pilots are ready to return to flying, the Rusty Pilots initiative is there to make it easier. With in-person seminars and a new online course, pilots can refresh their knowledge and connect with flight schools and instructors so they can complete a flight review and get back in the air.

Among the AOPA Foundation-funded

efforts to grow the pilot population, flight training

scholarships provide important financial assistance to help

aspiring pilots achieve their dreams of flight.

In 2019, 123 scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 were awarded to individuals nationwide. The recipients ranged in ages from 16 to 60, and while they each had a unique story about their path to flight training, they shared a common passion for aviation. 2019 also marked the first year AOPA awarded scholarships for teachers to pursue a primary pilot certificate such as a private, sport or recreational pilot certificate.

Combined with the 100 recipients of the AOPA You Can Fly High School Flight Training Scholarship program, which is made possible through the generosity of the Ray Foundation, AOPA awarded more than $107,000 in 2019 to 23 future pilots. These recipients are on their way to earning their pilot certificates and advancing their training thanks to funding from generous AOPA Foundation donors. As a result of this program, the future of general aviation is stronger and brighter.

For the fourth time in as many years, the AOPA

Foundation was challenged by the Ray Foundation to raise funds in support of

AOPA’s You Can Fly program. The Ray Foundation,

established by the late pilot and philanthropist James C. Ray, agreed to provide a matching grant of up to

$2 million for donations made during a You Can

Fly Challenge fundraising campaign in 2019.

Thanks to the generosity of more than 5,000 donors, the AOPA Foundation met and exceeded the goal of the challenge. Donor contributions topped out at more than $2.8 million. Encouraged by the generosity of these supporters, the Ray Foundation increased its matching grant to $2.5 million, for a total of more than $5.3 million in program dollars to help get–and keep–more people flying.
