Page 5: Amnesty International

WHERE WE STAND WITHGOVERNMENT

• AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.

Page 6: Amnesty International

• In pursuit of this vision, AI’s mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

THE DEATH PENALTY

• The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. It violates the right to life. It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent and has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments.

Page 12: Amnesty International

CHILD SOLDIERS• Worldwide, more than

half a million children have been recruited into government armed forces, paramilitaries, civil militia and a wide variety of non-state armed groups in more than 85 countries.

POVERTY AND HUMAN RIGHTS

• Everyone, everywhere has the right to live with dignity. That means that no-one should be denied their rights to adequate housing, food, water and sanitation, and to education and health care.

STOP SECRET CIA DETENTIONS• In the most

comprehensive list to date, six leading human rights organizations have published the names of at least 39 men, who are believed to have been held in secret US custody and who are still missing.
