DALLAS The gold cape that ElizabethTaylor wore as Cleopatra in two pivotalscenes in the 1963 film of the same name

brought $59,375 when it crossed the blockat Heritage Auctions Friday as part of an En-tertainment & Music Memorabilia auction. The cape sold to an anonymous East Coastcollector.

The consignor of the piece, who wished toremain anonymous, said that her mother, who worked in the couture fashion industry, purchased the famous piece from the nowdefunct Western Costume at some point inthe years following the 1963 films debut. She kept it wrapped in tissue paper in acedar closet.

I never mentioned it or showed it to any-one, the consignor said. When ElizabethTaylor passed away recently I thought of

the magnificent cape and realized that itwas time for the cape to find its way out intothe world.

The ceremonial cape from Cleopatra (20thCentury Fox, 1963) is crafted to resemblethe wings of a Phoenix and is made of thinpanels of gold-painted leather adorned withhand-stitched gold beads and sequins. Tay-lor wore the cape in two important scenes:Cleopatra's dramatic entrance to Romethe most lavish portrayal of this event in filmhistoryand Cleopatra's dramatic exit byasp bite.

This piece is the epitome of glamorous andit was worn by one of Hollywoods greatestleading ladies at the very peak of her fame,

power and beauty, said Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment and music memo-rabilia at Heritage Auctions, (Its) an artifactof the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema worth every penny.

This beautiful 1968 Cougar GTE soldfor $181,500 at a recent Barrett-Jack-son auction. Only 357 were ever builtwith the 427 W code side oiler V-8engine.

Mercurys Cougar premiered in 1967as an upscale version of Fords Mus-

tang. It came in many different forms, from a mild mannered 289 V-8 (thestandard engine) to the 428 power-house. Today, Cougars from 1967 to1970 are all very collectible, especiallythe convertibles. Of the near 375,000Cougars built in its four years of pro-duction, only about 13,500 were rag-tops. Regardless of vintage, if youhave a 67 to 70 Mercury Cougar inyour garage you should count yourselfas lucky.
