. . .”Saddle”The provenance of this saddlematches the richness of Villa’s life. Itwas given by Villa’s widow and onlylegal wife (reportedly he had eight mar-riages) to famed Hollywood directorHoward Hawksduring the filmingof Viva Villa. Mrs.Villa felt the filmextolled the mer-its of the MexicanRevolution andVilla as she knewhim.

For the past 20years, Villa’s sad-dle has been ondisplay in Texas,at the Witte Mu-seum in San An-tonio and theSouth Texas His-tory Museum inEdinburg.

In excellent con-dition, the saddleis smothered insi lver-wrappedthreads andboldly-domed sil-ver conchos.Made andmarked by expertcraftsmen, it hasFrancisco (nick-name: Pancho)Villa’s initials inhigh relief on thestirrups. Themat-ically, it has a 3-d i m e n s i o n a lsilver snakeheadand a carved dia-blo in the leatherunder the saddle-bags. JosephSherwood of High Noon remarked,“This is the trifecta for saddles – beau-tiful, in great condition and historicallysignificant.”

Linda Kohn Sherwood of High Noonobserved that Pancho Villa was “both acharismatic hero and cruel outlaw” whosurvived countless battles during hiscountry’s struggle for freedom. His

place in historyis a paradox. He was a revo-lutionary ideal-ist whobelieved firmlyin public edu-cation, healthand good gov-ernment; buton the otherhand, he was avicious andmean spirited, and would doanything towin.

The saddle’scolorful historyalso has a Hol-lywood mys-tique. PanchoVilla has beenplayed by morethan 35 actorssince 1919, in-cluding TellySavalas andAntonio Ban-deras. Themost recentrumor is thatJohnny Deppmay be next.
