Mechanical bankgoes from World’sFair to world record

by Auction House PR

TIMONIUM, Md . – Clad in age-defyingcast iron, antique mechanical banksmade another bulletproof run acrossthe auction block featuring the JohnJirkofsky collection. The sale set anumber of records for prices paid on in-dividual banks.

The anxious crowd awaited a pristine,multicolored J. & E. Stevens mechani-

cal bank commemorating the 1893Chicago World’s Fair. Only about fiveof the color variation exists; 99% of those produced were painted gold withsilver highlights. Estimated at $14,000-$18,000, the bank depicting Christo-pher Columbus sitting on a rock, withthe Santa Maria at one side and an In-dian chasing a buffalo on the other side, “discovered” its true market valueat a record $45,325 (all prices inclusiveof 22.5% buyer’s premium).

A Western art enthusiast, the buyer of the World’s Fair bank also lodged thewinning bid on a very rare Indian Headbust-style mechanical bank, probablythe best of three known examples.

Against an estimate of $9,000-$12,000,the coveted money box sold for $19,600.

A continued interest in German paintedspelter banks was evident in the sale,

with a circa-1920 Black Boy with Bou-quet of Flowers achieving a recordprice of $9,190. Cast-iron American stillbanks had a successful day at auction,as well. A boxed example by Arcadereplicating a Buick Yellow Cab with aflattop roof raced to a record-setting$7,320 against a $4,000-$6,000 esti-mate.

No Buyer for Chaplin Film at Auction

When it comes to motion pictures,Charlie Chaplin is the man, no?

Well, an all-but-

forgotten short filmfeaturing footage of the comic star failed tosell at a London auc-tion, defying expecta-tions that it might fetcha six-figure sum,Reuters reported.

The reserve price onthe film at Wednes-day’s sale was

£100,000 ($160,000)at Bonhams auction-eers, but apparentlythat was too high.“Charlie Chaplin in‘Zepped,’ ” is believed to be a propa-ganda film made in Britain duringWorld War I

A collector discovered the seven-minute short inside an old film reel tinand bought it in 2009 for £3.20 (about

$5) on the online auction site eBay.

The film shows Chaplin taking on aGerman Zeppelin aircraft and fea-turessome of the earliest animation in

film history.

Chaplin probably never knew of the movie’s ex-istence, said the filmcritic and Chaplin biog-rapher David Robinson, according to Reuters.

Mr. Robinson said ananonymous filmmaker had put together out-takes from three earlier

Chaplin pictures — “HisNew Profession”(1914), “A Jitney Elope-ment” (1915) and “TheTramp” (1915) — and

included sequences of stop-motion an-imation and other effects.

Chaplin was not involved in the pro-duction of “Zepped,” but famously sat-irized Adolf Hitler in the 1940 movie“The Great Dictator.”
