President’s Message

Nancy K. Boles

Dear Members: Wow - my “farewell” President’s message. After three wonderful years as President of KCPA (I really enjoyed those years), I am turning the gavel over to Kayleen Wills. President’s Message continued...

I have been a Board Member since 2003, serving as Membership Director, Treasurer, several terms as Newsletter Editor, and for the past three years, President. The successful management of these positions would not have been possible without the support of all of the Board Members, previous Board Members, and my employer, Klein, DeNatale, Goldner. KCPA has accomplished a great deal in just the short time since I became a Board Member.

Our membership and sustaining membership has increased; The number of CPs and ACPs in Kern County continues to increase; We have added two more non-profit organizations that benefit from our monthly Community Affairs events; We celebrated our 20th anniversary; The annual Holiday Luncheon continues to get bigger and better, collecting increasing numbers of toys to benefit the Jamison Children’s Center, and collecting record amounts of money from our op-portunity drawing to benefit Teen Court and CASA; Our Programs Director continues to locate excellent speakers for our MCLE luncheons. In fact, our slate for next year is already full because speakers approach us asking to provide MCLE presenta-tions to us.

None of these accomplishments could have been achieved without the support of our members, sus-taining members, and employers. I know that I end each year by saying “thank you,” and once again, I say,

Thank you! Sincerely,

Nancy Boles

Community Affair for June

Laura Meza - Community Affairs Director Klein, DeNatale, Goldner 4550 California Avenue, 2nd Floor Bakersfield, CA 93309 Direct Line: (661) 328-5333 [email protected]

For our next community affairs opportunity, KCPA is accepting cash or check donations for the Wounded Heroes Fund (“WHF”) to help support our injured troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Please submit cash or checks made payable to the Wounded Heroes Fund at the June general meeting or Laura Meza.

All donations to the WHF are tax deductible.

The Wounded Heroes Fund (WHF) is a community-wide organization dedicated to providing assistance to brave service men and women returning home from the battlegrounds of Iraq and Afghanistan. Wendy Porter, the daughter of a Vietnam veteran, realized that more needed to be accomplished, especially for service members and their families to resume life after war. She could not help her father and other returning Vietnam veterans. However, as Executive Director of the WHF, she is leading the effort to help the men and women who fought for our freedom in the Middle East. The WHF Mission Statement is to:

Acknowledge and honor the individuals who have sacrificed so much for our country;

Help with the unmet needs of the wounded and deceased and their families without bringing undue stress unto their lives;

Organize visits to military hospitals to distribute “care packages” highlighting the best of Bakersfield, and provide a meal and entertainment for the patients and families; and

Build a broad-based community effort to raise funds and ensure that our service members know that they are appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who donated canned and packaged food to the Gleaner’s Senior Sack Program in May.

Adapted from Garner’s Modern American Usage (Oxford Univ. Press, 2003). Me is an objective pronoun and used when the speaker/writer is the object of the sentence or phrase. I is a nominative pronoun and used when the speaker/writer is the subject of the sentence or phrase. I went to Chicago last week. Susie’s dog licked me. Myself is a reflexive pronoun. Reflexive pronouns have only two uses:

They may serve as the object of a reflexive verb such as: “They flatter themselves.” Or, “She gave herself a break.”

They are used for emphasis such as: “Gayle herself would never admit it.” All reflexive pronouns must reflect back to the subject of the sentence. When used in sentences where they do not reflect back, they are misused. This problem most often occurs when someone substitutes the singular, first person reflexive pronoun myself for one of the singular, first person personal pronouns I or me: “Myself, my sister Mary, and my mom went to Chicago last week.” “My sister Mary, my mom, and I went to Chicago last week.” Other examples of misuse of myself: John and myself repaired the copy machine. Jane drove Sherry and myself to the movies. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Barry Goldner or myself. They should read: John and I repaired the copy machine. Jane drove Sherry and me to the movies. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Barry Goldner or me.

Me, Myself, or I?

1. When your boss says, "We have a Brief we need filed tomorrow-I need you here early", it means: "Come in early, wait all day, skip lunch, and plan to stay late because I won't give you the first draft until 3:30 p.m., and we really have until the last Federal Express leaves the airport to get it out".

2. You get really excited about a 2% pay raise.

3. Your office closes for a holiday and all you can think about is the hours you'll have to make up for taking that day off.

4. A partner comes into your office and wants you to work on a project, saying: "make it perfect, but, don't spend a lot of time on it because we can't bill the client for this." You're left wondering what the heck you're supposed to do. You do the work, and get absolutely no credit for it in the end, since it wasn't "billable" hours. 5. The fire alarm goes off in the building, and no one in your office moves. 6. Your supervisor doesn't have the ability to do your job. Most days, YOU have the ability to do your boss's job! 7. Salaries of the members on the "Executive Committee" are higher than all the Third World Countries' annual budgets combined. 8. Free food left over from a meeting is your main staple. 9. You're already late on the work task that you just got.

10. You perfectly understand all of the above.

YOU KNOW YOU WORK IN A LAW OFFICE WHEN….
