1 Happy May, Members! As I approach the end of my first term as your President, I am filled with sadness that I will not be returning next year. When I initially took on the President position, it was my goal to spend the next couple of years locked-and-loaded so that I could see so many of my ideas come to fruition. However, it has been a reality-check for me that becoming a mommy for the first time is going to take a lot more from me than I anticipated. In any event, I will not be far from reach. After I spend the next few months adjusting to this whole new world and getting more acquainted with the newest love of my life, I fully intend to return to the background and be involved as much as possible. With that in mind, elections for the 2012-2013 Board are underway. We have not been able to fill the position for President, nor do we have a nominee, so I strongly urge any one who is qualified to serve to seriously consider running. (To qualify to serve, you must have previously served on the KCPA Board for at least 2 years, in any capacity.) As I mentioned above, I will be around in the background as Board Advisor when I return from maternity leave, so you will not be serving alone. I promise you that being President is extremely fulfilling and well-worth your time. Please contact either me or Justin Madding if you are compelled to serve, or if you have any questions or concerns about running for President. Happy May, Members!

As I approach the end of my first term as your President, I am filled with sadness that I will not be returning

next year. When I initially took on the President position, it was my goal to spend the next couple of years

locked-and-loaded so that I could see so many of my ideas come to fruition. However, it has been a reality-check

for me that becoming a mommy for the first time is going to take a lot more from me than I anticipated. In any

event, I will not be far from reach. After I spend the next few months adjusting to this whole new world and getting

more acquainted with the newest love of my life, I fully intend to return to the background and be involved as much

as possible.

With that in mind, elections for the 2012-2013 Board are underway. We have not been able to fill the

position for President, nor do we have a nominee, so I strongly urge any one who is qualified to serve to seriously

consider running. (To qualify to serve, you must have previously served on the KCPA Board for at least 2 years, in

any capacity.) As I mentioned above, I will be around in the background as Board Advisor when I return from

maternity leave, so you will not be serving alone. I promise you that being President is extremely fulfilling and

well-worth your time. Please contact either me or Justin Madding if you are compelled to serve, or if you have any

questions or concerns about running for President.

May Community Affairs

GOLDEN EMPIRE GLEANERS can use our help! Our community affairs opportunity for May is a canned/packaged food drive to benefit the Gleaner’s Senior Sack Program. Please bring canned or packaged (cereal, rice, beans, snack items, etc.) food to the May General Meeting.

DEADLINE: May General Meeting

The Senior Sack Program targets low-income seniors in Kern County as recipients of food. It is run in partnership with a site and is staffed by volunteers, many of whom are senior citizens themselves. Food is delivered to the site twice each month for distribution to registered seniors. “Sacks” include at least ten items including fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, snack items, and staples. This program is to be both food relief and encouragement of social interaction for seniors. Each site is run by volunteers who help unload the Gleaners’ delivery truck, bag the individual food orders for the recipients, greet the seniors and distribute the food. The site is to provide refreshments and a chance for socializing.

Your donations totaled $51.00.

KCPA COOKBOOK

The KCPA Board is in the process of vetting the

possibility of creating a fundraiser cookbook with

recipe submissions from KCPA members,

attorneys, staff, court reporters, and court

personnel. We are interested in finding out

whether you will participate by submitting your

favorite recipe. If you are interested, please email

[email protected] to indicate your

interest. Many years ago, cookbooks were created

and sold by the staff at the Municipal Court and

also the Legal Secretaries Association. So, it has

been a long time since something like this has been

done and we think it would be fun, and also make

money for our organization which will enable us to

donate more to our charitable causes.

Thank you for your input.

Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while

serving in the American military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years

following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe

Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in

parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

JEANNIE D. CONNER

(1952-2007)

It is time to submit your application for the JEANNIE D. CONNER MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL

SCHOLARSHIP.

Jeannie was a valued member of KCPA, and we honor her memory by encouraging paralegal education

with a scholarship in her name. You do not have to be a student to apply – all members are encouraged to

apply. The $250 scholarship can be used for any seminar or course related to a paralegal’s continuing education.

Jeannie Conner was a member of KCPA since it was founded in 1987. Jeannie was on the KCPA Board for

a number of years, holding various positions. In 2005, she was named KCPA’s Outstanding Member of the Year.

Jeannie worked with Milton M. Younger at Chain-Younger. She was a Certified Legal Assistant and was

also a certified California Advanced Specialist in Civil Litigation. Jeannie was dedicated to her work as a

paralegal. She was always willing to share her knowledge with anyone who needed assistance. Her interest in

the continuing education of paralegals is the reason KCPA chose to honor her memory with a scholarship bearing

her name.

The $250 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified KCPA member to help with the cost of paralegal

classes or attendance at one or more MCLE events for the year in which the scholarship is awarded. The

application for the scholarship is attached hereto and available on our website. The deadline to apply for this

scholarship is May 14, 2012.
