*LITANY Marilyn Case

One: Hear again the faithful cry: ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good!’ All: We come to savor the Lord’s presence. One: God gives to us gladly and provides for us amply. All: We come to remember the riches of God, that we may enjoy and share them. One: As inheritors of God’s treasures, let us pray.

*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

We recognize that we are a hungry people, God. We hunger for food, for possessions, for position. We confess that we may hunger for far more than we truly need. Forgive us when in our scramble to satisfy ourselves, we disregard the legitimate needs of others. Forgive us when we fail to temper our hungers. Forgive us when we fail to recognize that every good and eternally satisfying thing comes to us as a gracious gift from you. Teach us to store up the sorts of treasures that make us rich toward you. Amen.

ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD

ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation

Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon.

Psalm 34:8-15 JILL A. TRUAX

Cantor and Congregation

One: 8O taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. 9O fear the LORD, you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want.

Cantor and Congregation

One: 10The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. 11Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good?

Cantor and Congregation

One: 13Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. 14Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. 15The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.

Cantor and Congregation

RESPONSE

One: May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today. All: Amen.

READING FROM THE EPISTLES Elizabeth B. Hipp

One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today.

Colossians 3:1-4, 8-11

1So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices 10and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!

RESPONSE

One: Christ’s faithful people reprioritize their lives. All: Let us make living in Christ’s image our fundamental goal.

CALL TO THE GOSPEL Rev. David W. Johnson

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today.

Luke 12:13-21

13Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ 14But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?’ 15And he said to them, ‘Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’ 16Then he told them a parable: ‘The land of a rich man produced abundantly. 17And he thought to himself, “What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?” 18Then he said, “I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” 20But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” 21So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.’

RESPONSE One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God!

SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO THE TABLE Dr. Casey G. Baggott

CALL TO COMMUNION

One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to God. One: Let us thank God. All: It is good to give God thanks and praise. One: Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you that Jesus has come to us, and by his life has told us, “I am the

manna, the true bread. Take, eat. You shall be filled, never to hunger again. I am the cup, the living water. Take, drink. You shall be refreshed, never to thirst again. I am the light, the hope of the world. Come, see. Your eyes shall be opened, never to despair again. I am the vine, you are the branches. Take root. You shall grow in me, never to die again.”

May your Holy Spirit be poured out upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine. By your grace, may we find at this table simple splendor, and the fullness of the presence of Christ. Amen.

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
