Message from the Padre

In our Gospel today, one of Jesus’ disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to

pray.” He said to them, "When you pray, say: “Our Father”... Yes, our Gospel today

is about the “Lord’s Prayer” or commonly known to many as the “Our Father.” The

“Our Father” gives us the value of having God as the center of our lives. St. Teresa of

Avila said that meditation on the Our Father alone could bring us into the deepest prayer and union with God. It invites us to deal

with ourselves and our own needs. It tells us that forgiveness is important if we are to relate well with others. It finally asks God

not to tempt us beyond our strength.

My dear friends, Jesus taught us the value of this prayer by showing us that prayer is not a lesson in how to persuade God.

Prayer is not about what we can get from God, but it is about what God gives us. There is a big difference! For often times what

we want from God and what we receive from God are two different things. Maybe God has already answered our prayer but we

just don't like the answer. We need to keep in mind that God may not give us the answer we want, but God will always answer us

with the best interest of our heart. Remember, Jesus said: “ask and you will receive, seek and you shall find, and knock and it will

be open to you.” This is a great promise that should encourage us to pray more!

This means that when we pray, God gives us what we need in order for us to grow and change. When we ask long enough,

seek hard enough, knock loud enough, and pray persistent enough, something is being changed inside us. By calling God “Our Fa-

ther,” the power and wisdom of God breaks into our lives... and as we move closer to God in prayer, we find that we may not get

what we want from God, but we get something better and we begin to desire what God desires in us.

This weekend, let us be reminded that "Prayer does not give us what we want, but prayer helps us in what we need." And

that prayer is not designed to change or persuade God; but it is designed by God to change us!

Fr. Joe

Ordinary Time Genesis 18: 20-32, Col 2: 12-14

Luke 11: 1-13

Today’s readings underscore the

power of a good relationship with the Lord our God. Would it have been possible for Abraham to bargain with

God for the lives of the people in Sodom and Gomorrah

had he not already known God well? And how can we

call God our Father unless we are personally familiar with the Lord? Today’s readings invite us to examine our rela-

tionship with God.

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week

Is Coming Soon!

Is Natural Family Planning really reliable? - YES!!

Modern methods of NFP are not at all related to the “rhythm method” of decades ago! Decades of medical and scientific research have helped couples and medical professionals to more fully understand a woman’s complex fertility cycles in order to provide very reliable methods of family planning AND since a woman’s reproductive health can affect many other aspects of health, today’s NFP methods offer better comprehensive woman’s healthcare!

NFP is not only reliable, but it is the only authentic method of family planning. Since NFP methods are not contraception, their effective-ness works both ways—for achieving and postponing pregnancy. When couples wish to achieve a pregnancy they can time sexual inter-course to the fertile window of the menstrual cycle, thereby optimizing the possibility of become pregnant. When wishing to avoid pregnancy,

studies show that couples who follow their NFP method’s guidelines correctly—achieve effectiveness rates of 97—99%.

Today begins Natural Family Planning Awareness Week!!

Building The Church

In Mission Land, USA

The work of the GLENMARY HOME MISSIONERS is the

subject of next weekend’s Mission Awareness presentation.

Brother David Hensley will be speaking at our Masses, telling

us about the missionary work his Society is doing in serving the

spiritual and material needs of people right here in the United

States! This collection for GLENMARY HOME MISSION-

ERS marks the annual Mission Awareness presentation pro-

moted by our diocesan Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Hundreds of U.S. counties do not have a resident priest, and in

many of these counties the Catholic Church is not present. That

means no celebration of the Eucharist, no sacraments not even a

parish community in which to find fellowship and support.

Glenmary Home Missioners are working hard to fill the void, to

bring the love of Jesus and His Church to the small towns and

rural areas of our nation.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to hear of the Glenmary

apostolate in Appalachia and the rural South, and to offer our

prayers and financial support for their important ministry in the

Church. Please be generous.
