Want to know what’s going on in the village? Then check out the Caldecote Facebook Group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/caldecote. The forum was created specifically for all residents of Caldecote, of all ages. It is a forum to discuss local issues, share information, help each other, make new connections and new friends. It is a place where we can have a laugh together as a community, and debate the issues of the day. People have been reunited with lost items, help offered to get things done or moved, items exchanged or given free such as the recent blue Hawaiian parasol and cherry tomato seedlings. There are currently over 300 members of the group, so why not come over and see for yourself. It is a closed group, and that is so we can prevent spamming. If you have a facebook account, and wish to join, please go to, http://www.facebook.com/groups/caldecote, click on request to join, and one of the Group administrators will contact you within 24 hours to ask you to verify that you live or work in the village. Please do reply to the administrators request and you will be added to the group if you live or work in the village. If you don’t have a facebook account yet, it is very easy to create one and then request to join the group. We look forward to seeing you there. Caldecote Facebook Group Admins

June Bulletin From Cambridgeshire Fire And Rescue Service

BARBECUE SAFETY: The sun has finally arrived so I’m sure some residents will enjoy a tasty barbecue – but all barbecues can get out of control if care is not taken. Follow our top tips for a safe barbecue:

• Place your barbecues on level ground where it will not tip over.

• Site barbecues away from sheds, fences, overhanging foliage and the house.

• Avoid positioning barbecues where people have to pass closely by it.

• Keep children and garden games well away from the cooking area.

• Never leave barbecues unattended.

• When cooking is finished, ensure the barbecue is cool before moving it

• NEVER pour petrol or other highly flammable liquids over any barbecue.

For more advice about coal or gas barbecue safety, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk/firesafety. Like our fan page on Facebook: www.facebook.com/cambsfrs, follow us on Twitter @cambsfrs. To find out if you are eligible for a free home fire safety check, call 0800 917 99 94.

The darling buds of May After one of the coldest springs for decades, never has the phrase ‘ne’er cast a clout ‘til May be out’ been more apposite, even when pulling apart the adage reveals ambivalent meanings. ‘Clout’ is an Old English word variously meaning a clot of earth or clothing. Thus it can be taken as advice not to work the earth until it has warmed by the end of May, but also as a warning not to put away winter clothing too soon. Either would seem to work well this year! The double meanings extend also to May – does it simply refer to the month, or could it be urging us to wait for the queen of the may or may blossom of the hawthorn, to be ‘out’ and in full bloom before daring to hope that summer is on the way? ‘Haw’ is derived from ‘hage’, an Old English word for hedge, and the abundant hawthorn and its wealth of poetical and proverbial references occupies a central place country lore. Since the Middle Ages, the end of winter has been celebrated by the crowning of the May Queen with may blossom and dancing in a weave to decorate a maypole with ribbons. The song, Here we go gathering nuts in May, in fact refers to ‘knots’ or posies of may blossom. Yet it has always been unlucky to bring may

Page 9: 2013 june july

blossom into the house, quite probably because the flowers give off a slightly curdled fragrance due to the presence of trimethylamine, a chemical also formed when body tissue starts to decay. Spring blossoms are cause for celebration all over the world, perhaps most famously through the hanami or ‘flower viewing’ festivals in Japan, during which thousands gather to admire the beauty of the cherry tree blossoms and feast underneath them. During the short season of just a week or two, the Japanese meteorological office issues a ‘blossom forecast’ to help in hanami planning. Both cherry and hawthorn belong to the Rose family, along with many other spring favourites such as rowan, apple, pear and almond. If we are lucky with our blossom forecasts, many will be in bloom for our own flower celebration, a Festival of Plants, on 18 May. During this day dedicated to bringing plants into focus, there’ll be drop-in ask the gardener sessions, pop-up plant science, fantasy flowers and the Fairyland Trust for younger visitors, independent local nurseries offering choice plants for sale, tours, meet the experts and ‘grow your own’ giveaways. So whether it’s getting advice on which plant goes where, discovering the inner workings of flowers, a bit of garden retail therapy or simply having a fun day out with the family, there’ll be something for everyone at our celebratory Festival of Plants. The Botanic Garden is open 10am – 6pm April - September. Admission is £4.50, Giftaid admission £4.95 or join the Friends, get free admission and

From the Rector Making the Grade? As your copy of the Journal reaches you, the season of examination panic will be in full flow for households with secondary school children and sixth form students. Months of learning and

weeks of revising will all need, somehow, to lead into the right answers in exams lasting only hours or even minutes. Families with younger children will be looking back at SATs, relieved that one testing time, at least, is behind them.

Page 12: 2013 june july

Maybe others of us, as we read, will be pondering missed chances and opportunities curtailed because the exams didn’t work out as hoped earlier in our lives. We live in a society where examination success can be taken as the major judgement of somebody’s worth. Living in the shadow of Cambridge can make that even more pronounced. The shocking thought that we, or our children, might be only average, can cause considerable anxiety. The Christian message is that we are all, without exception, made in God’s image, and all reflect God’s glory. As Psalm 139 puts it, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made”. Psalm 8, pondering the wonder of God’s glory and the splendor of the universe then says of human beings: “Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honour”. To be an average person, to be normal rather than exceptional, is to be part of the wonderful, fullest expression of God’s creativity. God looks at us, and is amazed and delighted with what He has made. We matter, and every person we know who is struggling with exams matters too, because we matter to God, because we are valued by God, because we each reflect just a little bit of God’s glory. Exams and qualifications are important, but God’s opinion of us is even more important. And God’s love never changes, never grows less, never overlooks us.

So, whether in an exam-dominated or and exam-free home let’s look forward with confidence. We matter to God, and He thinks we are amazing! Mike Booker (email [email protected])

Churchwardens’ Corner

We are very

pleased to

announce: the

Move of the

Apostrophe. Yes,

Churchwarden’s

Corner has been reinstated as

Churchwardens’ Corner. This space

in the Caldecote Journal is once more

home to two of us. At our annual

Eating ‘n’ Meeting in the Village Hall

in April, Dona was re-elected and

Rosanna Mahmood – who has been

hugely dedicated over the past 18

months to our church community –

was elected to join her, as the second

Churchwarden of St Michael’s.

Earlier this year we said a sad

goodbye to Eleanor and Matt Brown,

who moved to a new home out of the

village. We are hugely indebited to

Dave Sage for resuming the

Treasurer’s mantle from Matt. Both

Matt and Eleanor were greatly valued

members of our PCC (Parochial

Church Council), and so at our annual

meeting we were especially delighted

to welcome three new members to the

PCC – we are looking forward to

Page 13: 2013 june july

getting to know each other as a group

over the coming year.

In the service which preceded our

annual meeting, we took the

opportunity to look back on just a few

of the many positive things that have

happened in Caldecote Church over

the last year. It was in 2012 that we

began to have services every Sunday

(previously we joined with St

Andrew’s Toft for some services) and

at the regular time of 11am. And it

was also in 2012 that the After School

Church Club and the weekly Light

Bible Study Group were introduced.

The weekly Caldecote Catch-up e-

newsletter, which now has over 60

subscribers, saw its first anniversary

in April, and the website was recently

updated with a full archive of past

issues at

www.caldecotechurch.org.uk/caldecot

e-catch-up-past-issues/

It was certainly a year to look back on

with joy and with gratitude. As a

community we now look forward – to

seeing more of what is possible over

the coming year, as we grow and

learn together.

With best wishes,

Dona McCullagh and Rosanna

Mahmood

A personal ‘thank you’

Thank you to everyone who has been

so supportive during my first full year

as churchwarden. I’m all too aware

that I have many, many areas to

improve on! But I feel incredibly

privileged to be a part of St Michael’s.

When Annie left for her year in Spain,

it was a sudden opportunity for her,

and we never got the proper chance

as a church to thank her for

everything she had contributed to the

life of St Michael’s up to that point.

Thank you, Annie, for everything you

have done and been to St Michael’s.

Thank You for Recycling We would like to thank you and residents throughout Cambridgeshire for recycling 54% of your waste. This puts us well above the national average of 39% and on track to meeting our target of 60% by 2020. You may have heard recent news of problems at the Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant in Waterbeach. This machine was built to separate and process ‘black bag’ waste in Cambridgeshire. When working, the plant pulls out items which can be processed to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill by half, whilst also capturing greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, part of the turning equipment for this machine suffered serious mechanical failure in September 2012.

Work is underway to manufacture the new parts required to rebuild the machinery and to prepare the plant for installation, which is due to be completed before the end of 2013. In the meantime we’d like to remind you that the breakdown at the MBT only affects how ‘black bag’ waste is dealt with. Therefore we urge you to continue to recycle as much as possible through your normal household recycling service, which is collected and processed in the usual way. Recycling as much as possible reduces both the amount of waste going to landfill and demand on natural resources.

We would like to reassure you that the PFI contract the County Council has in place with the MBT contractor means the authority, and therefore council tax payers are protected from

any additional costs incurred because of the breakdown.

You can find out more about the Journey of Waste at the annual Recycling Open Day on Saturday 13 July from 10am to 4pm at AmeyCespa's Waterbeach site, just off the A10 between Cambridge and Ely. At the event you can take a guided coach tour of the site; join a walking tour of the new Materials Recycling Facility; enjoy plant and vehicle displays; find out how to reuse and recycle more of your waste and take part in activities for all the family. Entry is free.

If you would like more information about the MBT, please contact the AmeyCespa Press Office on 01865 713240 or email [email protected]. For more information about the Recycling Open Day phone 01223 861010 or visit www.recap.co.uk.

Caldecote Feast Fund Applications for the Feast Fund closed on 30th April. We had four applicants for five awards. It was therefore decided to award each applicant a share of the total Feast Fund. First applicant was Millie Emmans. Millie is a Caldecote resident who specialises in swimming. She is currently fourth in the U.K. for 13 year old girls in the 800M freestyle. Her ambition is to be a member of the GB swim team, then the Olympics !. Millie is seen here receiving her award for £300 towards her training and swim costume costs.

Page 15: 2013 june july

Second applicant was on behalf of the First Responder program by Mark Taylor. Mark is currently fund raising in order to reach the sum of £2,000 towards a defibrillator for the village of Caldecote. Mark receives £350 towards this vital piece of medical equipment. Third applicant was another budding Olympian, Evie Joseph. Evie is a Caldecote resident and has already attained National Level for trampolining at the age of 9. She is the youngest national competitor in the Eastern Region and one of the youngest in the country. Her ambition is to reach the GB Youth team and hopefully the Olympics !. Evie is seen here receiving her award of £300 towards her training and trampolining costume costs. The final award goes to the Caldecote Tuesday Club. The application was put together by Margaret Hobbs and the award of £300 will be used towards various club costs. The Tuesday Club meet once a month and enjoy organising an array of events for the “older” generation of Caldecote ! Fundraising at any level is always very difficult to arrange. The Feast Fund is pleased to support local Caldecote residents in their pursuit of individual achievement just as much as we are pleased to support vital

medical equipment and local clubs within Caldecote. Unfortunately, the Feast suffered this year from a lack of volunteers and hence there will be no Feast in 2013. Hopefully, the residents of Caldecote will recognise the good that can come from supporting local events where proceeds can be used to help the village and it’s residents. If any local businesses or entrepreneurs would like to sponsor any of the above individuals or causes, then please get in touch and I can pass their details to you. John Miller Chairman Feast Fund

Our PCSO is Karen Mahoney – email [email protected]. The email address to contact any of the Cambourne team is [email protected]. The enquiry office at Cambourne for Cambourne Police Station is closed until further notice. Crime Updates Since the last journal, we have reported the following:

• Unknown offender/s have stolen heating oil from a bungalow in west drive.

• ASB issues was reported: Furlong way, where youths were suspected of smoking “drugs” behind the portacabin, officers attended however the youths had gone.

• 2 vehicles were seen to be acting suspiciously at the turning point of West drive, the caller suspected they may have been dealing drugs. The

vehicles had left when the police attended.

• A report was received of a motorbike being ridden across the park in Furlong way, on police attending the youth made off and officers were unable to obtain details.

Success Story: On the 2nd of January 2013 a vehicle was stolen from a drive way in Hines lane, Comberton. The offender had broken in to the house and stolen the keys. The offence occurred at around 1pm, later on at 2.55pm the same day a member of the public in Haslingfield called police to report that they had just witnessed a vehicle being crashed in to a telegraph pole and the driver running away. Police promptly attended and conducted an area search where they located the offender and arrested them.

Caldecote Neighbourhood Watch The Street Co-ordinators are working hard to recruit their neighbours to become members. For more detailed information please see the website: http://www.community.caldecote.gov.uk/neighbourhoodwatch. Currently we have 38% of the village signed up as members. Whilst this is a good start, we still need more.

What does it involve?

Street Co-ordinators – we need to have Street Co-ordinators to “recruit” members from within their vicinity (that is their neighbours), to hold the contact information of those members and disseminate information by email. They also receive information from their members and report it back up to the Village Co-ordinator and/or the police, where necessary. It is very

Page 17: 2013 june july

much a two way communication system. Whilst we are lucky enough to have a number of people volunteer for this role at our October meeting, we are still short of Street Co-ordinators for many areas. Where there are areas which have not got a "local" Street Co-ordinator, we are fortunate to have a volunteer who will pick up the role, but it would be better all round if each area could have a local Co-ordinator. If you are interested in becoming a Street Coordinator, please contact the Village Co-ordinator Alexis Wood on [email protected] or tel 01954 210341.

Members – the more of the community who sign up to the scheme the safer and better off the whole village will be. Members will receive regular updates from their Street Co-ordinator which will enable them to know what to look out for in respect of recent incidents, etc. They are also asked to be vigilant and report any unusual behaviour either to the Police if it is an actual incident, on 999 or 101, or to the relevant Street Co-ordinator so that information can be collated and analysed for reporting if necessary. It has been found that the stronger the NHW Scheme, the lower the crime rate for the area. For instance, Swavesey, who has an 85% membership across the village, has the lowest crime rate in Cambridgeshire and on analysis by the Police, this has been found to have a direct correlation to the number of NHW members.

To become a Member simply send your details (name, address, email, telephone number) to your Street Co-ordinator, listed below, or the Village Co-ordinator Alexis Wood on

[email protected] or tel 01954 210341.

Aims – to help members know what to do with information they may have; to feel confident that they know how to deal with their observations or suspicions; to take away the hesitation people may currently feel in reporting information; developing a mindset so that we all get to know what to look for; to establish a two-way communications system with the Police so that they feel supported in the role we are expecting them to play.

What it doesn't involve!!

Recent episodes of soap operas have portrayed the members of NHW schemes as being expected to "pound" the streets looking for criminals, suspicious circumstances and making sure all is well. This is not the case. We are not asked to or expected to do the job of the police. Our role is to keep the police informed of what we see during our usual “routines”, what our suspicions are and provide information to the police so that they can do their job effectively and we can protect our community.

Remember, it won't cost you anything, indeed, if you become part of a formal NHW Scheme registered with the Police, you may be able to obtain a discount (of about 10%) off your property and contents / effects insurers. Being a member does not have to be onerous on your time but it helps protect you, your neighbours and the community as a whole. The more of us that are members, the safer the village will be.

Message from tThe Police As the warm weather has finally arrived (although I am not sure for how long!), I'm sure you will want to enjoy long walks in the area.

Please remember when leaving your vehicle that you have not left any valuables on show like handbags, laptop bags, phones and sat navs.

During the summer months some beauty spots like Byron's pool in Grantchester and Wimpole Hall can become more popular for thieves to target.

We do many patrols around the area to try to prevent this issue, however please do not make it tempting for thieves to grab whatever you have left behind!!

Please be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour on 101 or if a crime is in progress call 999.

Reporting Crime and Incidents All residents are requested to report all crimes and incidents to the police. The more reports we make, the better picture the police have of what is going on and the better they will be able to respond. The reports also feed into the Police Panels and help shape the priorities set for the village. If we fail to report incidents, it is assumed that we do not have any and the police, as a consequence, will not consider these when setting their priorities, even if we report them at the Panel meetings. So, call 101 and report the incidents or email our local PCSO. If you are not confident about reporting an incident or suspicion to the Police, then contact your Street Co-ordinator or the Village Co-

ordinator and report it. Don’t forget, if we have a survey before the panel meeting, please submit it before the meeting to ensure our views are taken into consideration. The main point is, KEEP REPORTING ALL INCIDENTS AND SUSPICIONS! ______________________________

Caldecote Dry Drayton and Hardwick Community Car Scheme (Doctors' Run) This is just a short note this month to say two important things. Firstly the scheme is currently very short of drivers. We now find we did around 600 runs last year and for our 15 or so drivers that is an awful lot to keep on top of. We simply must not wear our drivers out. The driving/co-ordinating is completely voluntary and drivers only drive when it fits in with their day to day lives. There is never any pressure to do so. If you can help in any way please get in touch with Sheila Stephenson on 01954 210638. 0r email on [email protected]. We really do need your help. Secondly thanks to the Caldecote coffee morning team, we are holding another coffee morning in Caldecote Village Hall on Friday June 28th from 9.00am until 11.45am. There will be a raffle and prizes would be most welcome. Prizes can either be brought on the morning and added to the table or given to Hazel Swindells whom many of you will know. We had a lovely lot last year so do feel free to make a contribution! Do come and enjoy a really enjoyable coffee morning in aid of the car scheme. There will be more information/displays on the scheme and Care Network at about 11.00am on that morning. (PS As usual if you need to book a lift through the scheme please ring either Marian Gibbens 01954 211709, Hazel Swindells 01954 212998 or Anne Maclachlan 01954 211452)

From The District Councillor Welcome to the new municipal year. South Cambs held three by-elections on the same day as the county council elections. The results leave the political makeup of the council unchanged, with the Conservatives in overall control with 33 seats, Liberal Democrats have 16 seats, Independents 7 seats and Labour 1 seat. Planning-New Local Development Plan (LDP) Work on the new LDP is ongoing. I have attended two of the three Member workshops to discuss the draft chapters and put forward your views, and will be attending the fourth in May. The draft plan will then be put out for further consultation in the summer. Residents will be notified

Page 22: 2013 june july

of the consultation through the parish council. The main issues of concern to Caldecote remain the proposed use of the Bourn Airfield Site, firstly for a residential development of 3000 houses, secondly for alternative types of commercial and/or employment use, and thirdly as a community stadium. The first and third option did not have much support during the debate, but there is guarded support for the employment use. The parish council have also requested that the playing fields be designated a Protected Village Amenity. Please express your views on all of this when the consultation takes place in summer. Land Next to Casa-de-Foseta, St Neots Road: This is the site that was given approval for a 20-pitch touring caravan park in April 2012. The owner has submitted a new planning application reference number is S/0255/13/FL to build 4 bungalows on the land instead of the caravan park. On the basis of current planning policy, the application was set to be refused because the site is outside the development framework of the village. To give it another chance, I have requested that the application go to the planning committee to be determined, so members can have a chance to consider the merits of the application and support from the community, before making the final decision. The parish council recently met with the land owner and his agent to discuss the merits of the application in more detail before it goes to the

planning committee, possibly on 5th June. Residents who wish to support the application should write to or email the planning officer in charge of the application and members of the planning committee with their reasons for support. 101A West Drive: Following pressure from me, the enforcement and planning officers have held discussions with the developer and he has stopped working on the site. He has now submitted plans that will enable him to discharge the pre-commencement conditions affecting the 6-ft close boarded fence on the boundary which has been causing visibility problems for pedestrians and cyclists for several years. Welfare Reform: The reform kicked in on 1st April 2013, and South Cambs expects that over 3,000 residents in the district will be affected as three measures kick in namely (i) localised council tax where those of working age will see a reduction of about 8.5% in their council tax benefit, (ii) the so called bedroom tax for under-occupation of social rented property where the housing benefit is reduced by 14% for one underused bedroom and 25% for two underused bedrooms and finally (iii) the benefit cap limiting benefits received to £350 for single adults and £500 for couples. Council tax relief for empty properties has also changed, and South Cambs estimates that 72 homes in Caldecote will potentially be affected. That is a lot of properties. If anyone in Caldecote is affected by any of these measures, please come and talk to me so that we can try and get you the right help that you need.

Page 23: 2013 june july

Cambridge-Plus website South Cambs says it is open for business, as it expects jobs to grow by 1200 per year over the next 15 years. This is the forecast that is driving the local development plan. The council has created a website at http://www.cambridge-plus.com/ which aims to provide active support for businesses already in, or seeking to, settle in the South Cambridgeshire region. Why not check it out and see if you can get some benefit from it. Housing: There is a need for cheaper housing in the village, especially for key workers and those people with family links to the village as shown by SCDC records. I am working with the parish council in trying to determine the exact level of need for affordable homes in the village. The parish council has asked Cambridgeshire ACRE to carry out a needs survey, and residents should expect to receive the survey letter and form soon. I would strongly encourage everyone in the village to please respond to the survey, so that we can get a good representation from across the board. Transport: I recently arranged for the information leaflet and questionnaire on the Demand Responsive Transport to be distributed in the village. Thank you to those who have completed the form and either dropped it at the village shop for me or put it through my letter box. Please I would appreciate hearing from more of you, particularly the bus users or potential bus users. Superfast Broadband Hurray! In April following my one-woman public protest, BT released loads of new fibre connections. More sections of

the village are now able to order superfast broadband-only 1 year late!!. I have also circulated the list of streets to the village, and they are mainly top end of Claire Drive and the roads of it, and parts of Strympole Way and the roads off it. The village has since been infested (in a nice way) with BT vans, orders continue to be made and fulfilled. Mrs Annette Thorpe, the BT manager overseeing the rollout attended the parish council meeting on 17 April to give an update, and by the time you read this, will have attended on 16-May as well to explain why the rest of the village is still waiting and when we can expect service Last month, I attended the meeting of the Broadband Champions for the Connecting Cambridgeshire project in Alconbury. There is no definitive rollout plan yet, but we were assured that the rollout will be completed by the end of 2015 to the whole county using FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet) technology. I will continue to update residents of Old Caldecote when I have more definitive information. Councillor Drop In Surgery I am here to help you with any issues you have with getting service from South Cambridgeshire District Council. Please contact me if I can be of help. You can drop in to the councillor surgeries that I hold at Caldecote Village Hall, on first Thursdays of the month, 7 – 8pm. Future dates are 6-June, 4-July, 5-September, 3-October, 7-November 2013. Church

… reviving our heritage www.caldecotefriends.org.uk

Here are details of two major events we will be holding in June:

Summer Concert: 6.00pm on Sat 15th June at the church

We are holding a special summer concert given by the Galliard Trio, playing flute, oboe, and harpsichord – and sometimes bassoon, or cor anglais. The programme will be suitable for all ages including music by Handel, Bach and Mozart as well as a special version of The Carnival of

the Animals by Saint-Saens, and accompanying musical anecdotes. The concert will start at 6.00pm and will last just under an hour. After the music, everyone is invited by Catherine and John to share their delicious savoury & sweet refreshments in the Old Rectory garden (marquee if wet). Tickets are likely to sell out quickly (prices £10 in advance; £12 at door, if any left); if you haven’t got one by the time this Journal article reaches you, please ask Lisa Hazel on 210021 or Dona on 01223 263180, or email [email protected] .

Open Gardens: weekend of 22nd-23rd June (2-6pm)

Open Gardens weekend is always a thoroughly enjoyable chance to take the air, share tips, admire nature, explore the village, and eat home-made pizzas & cakes – all without any need to start the car! Despite the long winter, we think more gardens will be open this year than ever before. Some gardens will have activities for children, and there will be a school art exhibit. You can buy your programme at the first garden you visit, and if you missed the leaflet through your door, you can find maps of gardens that are open outside the shop, outside 123 Highfields Road, or on our website.

Reminders

Without any extra cost to you, the ‘Shop at Amazon’ button on our website can benefit

the village church every time you shop. Remarkably, through Amazon’s

Page 25: 2013 june july

associates program, 5% of each purchase price goes to the Friends, and better still, the percentage Amazon donates increases when more people use the link. It even works with Third Party Seller purchases! So far an excellent sum of £229 has been raised in this way, so please do tell your friends and family what to do … when you want to shop, just do so by clicking on the button on our website; then just shop as normal, and also save the link as a ‘favourite’ for next time. (You can tell it is working if there is “frieofcaldchu-21″ in the web address.)

Many thanks to all who contribute to the Friends activities in so many different ways. For any ideas of further activities, or offers of help please contact Roger Sylvester-Bradley on 01954 210560 or [email protected] or Sheila Stephenson on 01954 210638 or [email protected] or Annie Nason on 212350 or [email protected]

_____________________________ Caldecote Playgroup Summer Term The children planted sunflower seeds which they took home and we asked the children to take photos of their plants over the summer to share with us. We also planted an upside down tomato plant and we are hoping to have cherry tomatoes for snack. We arranged a 10 day egg hatching programme. The children loved

watching the eggs and got excited when one of the eggs hatched at midday. Once the chicks made it into the brooder box the children sat talking to the chicks for long periods. The children made lots of fantastic pictures of eggs and chicks using a range of materials. Staff We would like to say a fond farewell to two of our staff members, Terri and Chapna, who will be leaving us the end of the term. We wish you all the best for the future. Fundraising Our fundraising team have been very busy this year and we would like thank them and parents for supporting playgroup. We have bought some fantastic resources such as the wooden water table which has lots of open-ended learning and play opportunities. Playgroup Sessions We are pleased to be offering warm school lunches from the school kitchen to children attending afternoon sessions or staying for lunch at £2 a meal.
