A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN…

A confession: until recently, I was not a dog person. I justified this to myself by recalling what I once read in Moshe Waldock’s The Big Book of Jewish Humor:

“Dogs who bark (and even dogs who don’t) are…[often] stand–ins for anti-Semites. To the people of the shtetl, dogs were not friendly household pets, but part of the enemy forces, guarding the enemy’s estate, for example, or running wild with their peasant masters.”

Waldocks gives the following joke as an example:

A Jew who has left the faith confides in a friend, “In some ways, I still feel Jewish. Every day I read The New York Times, every Sunday I have a pastrami sandwich, and I am still afraid of dogs.”

I, too, was content to lead a life free of dogs until, after an emotionally challenging summer last year, Dena and I decided that we needed a pet. I am terribly allergic to cats, so we settled on a dog; we chose a greyhound because they have short hair, are calm, and don’t smell. Although I loved that our dog’s given name, Coby, sounded Israeli—it is a diminutive for Ya’akov—we really picked him out because he looked like my favorite television dog, Santa’s Little Helper from The Simpsons.

Almost immediately, I was transformed from being apathetic about dogs to being a real dog lover; I came to understand the value of their companionship, loyalty and affection. I also became more sensitive to those in our community who had recently lost a pet. I began to wonder what Judaism could teach me about pet ownership—what do they mean to our lives and how do we cope with their loss?

Interestingly, though post-exilic Judaism (after the fall of the Second Temple in the first century) tended to eschew pet ownership for a variety of reasons, dogs similar to my greyhound were common in the ancient Near East. Salukis and greyhounds are depicted in Egyptian tomb reliefs dating to the 2000 BCE, excavations at Tell Brak in Iraq show evidence of domesticated dogs as early as 2500 BCE. In the land of Israel, evidence of dog burial dating to the around 850-500 BCE has been found throughout the land, but particularly in Ashdod and in Ashkelon.

In all of these ancient communities, the archaeological record indicate not only the presence of domesticated dogs, but also a clear affinity towards them: dogs were often buried in ways that indicated clear intention if not ritual. These facts seem to contradict the prevalent Biblical image of dogs, and support a secondary narrative that understood the usefulness of dogs in a society of shepherds. Dogs were, from antiquity, beloved members of families.

Rabbinic tradition, also, has favorable things to say about animals; perhaps the most famous teaching is that, when the Messiah comes, it will be dogs who lead the other animals in song. The same legend teaches that they are afforded this honor because they remained calm and silent during the plagues in Egypt, even though they were able to sense the divine presence. As a reward for their tranquility during trying times, they will be afforded this great honor.

Given all of this, it is not surprising that Jewish law allows for mourning over the loss of a pet—one is allowed to say the prayer “baruch dayan emet” (blessed be the righteous judgez) over the loss of a pet. This blessing, traditionally reserved for the loss of a human, is allowed over the loss of a beloved pet. Although we don’t sit shiva for a pet, this tradition in Jewish law acknowledges that the relationship we share with our pets is special, unique, and holy. They fill our lives with joy, warmth, and friendship and increase our ability to connect with God’s creations. In the coming year, we will explore ways to honor our animal friends at Bnai Abraham—look for events to come.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE …

It is with mixed emotions that I write this, my final President’s message. If you have not already heard, Victoria and I are moving to the Philadelphia area. I will be working out of my firm’s Philadelphia office, and the move will also allow us to be closer to family. While we are excited about the move, we will miss the Bnai Abraham community and the Lehigh Valley.

I am proud of the accomplishments of our Board of Trustees. Over the past year, we passed a balanced budget, renewed our contract with Rabbi Stein, and introduced measures to manage the business of the synagogue as efficiently as possible. Gerald Weisberger graciously agreed to assume the balance of my term as President, and the Board will support Jerry and continue to improve and grow Bnai Abraham.

We have enjoyed getting to know you over the past eight years. The office has our updated contact information if you should ever want to say hello.

We are asking every member of our congregation to help us locate prospective new members. They may be your neighbors, friends, vet, or whoever. Our successful Torah Study group will continue to meet Thursday mornings, 10:15 to 11:15. No prior experience is necessary. We are charging a low materials fee of $10 per semester to defray the cost of copying and coffee.

Bnai Abraham has been signed up at Al’s Cleaners, 1132 Northampton Street, to enable the synagogue to collect 10% of all sales of dry cleaning and laundry services that our congregants spend there. It’s easy. Just mention that you are a member of Bnai Abraham Synagogue, and they will credit the synagogue and send the proceeds periodically. Al’s is only about seven blocks from the synagogue, has very convenient hours, and does excellent work.

The Mustard Seed

Jewish texts compare the knowable universe to the size of a mustard seed to demonstrate the world's insignificance and to teach humility. The Jewish philosopher, Nahmanides, mentions that, when it was the size of a mustard seed. Sounds like the 20th Century scientific Big Bang??

In the Christian New Testament, the mustard seed is used by Jesus in the parable of the Mustard Seed as a model for the kingdom of G-d, which initially starts small but grows to be the biggest of all garden plants. The Jewish audience of that parable thought of the mustard seed as a weed, and there were laws to restrict the sowing of mustard seeds because the hardy seeds germinate in 10 days and become shrubs that will overtake and choke out all other plants in a garden. The Jewish audience would have looked agape as Jesus picked a nuisance weed as a model for the kingdom of G-d. Jesus intended to make a point by so doing, that in the kingdom of G-d things would not seem as they were and that things will be turned on end, for example the weak would be the strong and the losers would be winners. As an aside, Jesus being Jewish probably did speak of the kingdom of heaven, not the kingdom of G-d because a Jewish teacher would not want to allude unnecessarily to G-d or G-d's name

One of the most interesting religious stories of the mustard seed is actually that of the Buddha and the parable of the mustard seed. The next Ritual Corner will continue with this---tales of grief and death and mustard seeds.

REMEMBERING LEAH CROHN MIASKOFF Z”L BY NATHAN WEISSLER

This June will be my maternal grandmother Leah Crohn Miaskoff's 20th yazherit. My grandmother married my grandfather, Leonard Miaskoff, in 1960 and was my mother's step-mother. Sadly, I did not have an opportunity to get to know my grandmother as she died when I was less than one year old, in 1993. As my grandmother's yazherit approaches, I have been thinking about how stories that I have been told about her have inspired my dedication to Judaism. My grandmother was the director of the Bnai Abraham choir and greatly appreciated Jewish music. I very much enjoy Jewish music, and hearing stories about my grandmother's appreciation for Jewish music has inspired me in my own appreciation for Jewish music.

My grandmother was born in 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, which is where she was raised. She was the second of three children born to Lawrence and Jennie Brodie Crohn. My grandmother had one older brother, David, and one younger brother, Harris. Judaism was a very important part of the Crohn family's life. Lawrence Crohn had several leadership roles in the Detroit Jewish community and he was an active Zionist. David Crohn used the skills that he learned as an American officer during World War II to assist in the establishment of the State of Israel and ultimately made aliya.

Music was also very important to the Crohn family. Harris Crohn became a highly respected professor of piano in Dallas, Texas, and was very accomplished professionally. My grandmother received a Fulbright scholarship to study voice and singing in France. She also sang in Israel during the early years of the State of Israel.

My grandmother graduated from Wayne State University and received a Masters degree in library science from Rutgers University.

My grandmother married my grandfather in 1960, and they initially lived in New York City, and for approximately ten years sang in the Park Avenue Synagogue quartet. Around 1965, my grandparents and my mother moved to Easton, where they joined Bnai Abraham Synagogue. They were active synagogue members and had many friends at Bnai Abraham. I remember hearing family members and people who knew my grandparents talk about my grandmother's loyalty to her friends and her kindness towards others. Additionally, my grandmother worked in several libraries in the Lehigh Valley. I especially appreciate my grandmother's love of books because I also love books.

People have told me about how I gave my grandmother a lot of nachas when I was a baby. Today, I feel very connected to my grandmother because of the wonderful stories that I have heard both about her and about the joy that I gave her as a baby. I am confident that my grandmother's legacy will be an inspiration to me and my family for a long time. I am very grateful for the inspiration that my grandmother's legacy has given me and many others.

I will always treasure the stories that I have been told about my grandmother.
