anyone’s estimation. It is also a Gold FORTIFIED Home™, meeting the highest level of achievement for disaster resistance as determined by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. Ryan Crosser, Vice President of Andrew Roby’s new coastal division, says the Atlantic Beach home is built to withstand 185 mile an hour winds and is only the second Gold FORTIFIED Home™ built in the state of North Carolina.

“We have seen first hand how hurricane-proof this house is,” says Ryan. “Hurricane Irene hit us mid-construction and there was not one water leak in the house.” The home has a hurricane foundation with pilings 16 feet into the ground. Its exterior walls on the first floor are solid concrete and the windows are all high impact hurricane proof glass. The front exterior staircase and the four outdoor shower stalls are all made of Brazilian walnut, chosen for durability as well as beauty. If going for the gold certification sounds expensive, it pays off in the long run. These homeowners stand to save between $4,000 and $6,000 on their annual insurance. Beyond its structural integrity, the home is a design masterpiece. The couple chose Andrew Roby, who built their custom home in Charlotte, to build this dream vacation home. Charlotte architects MGPB designed the home in less than twelve weeks. The owners gave the design team creative license, with a few requests. They wanted the home

to fit in with others in the neighborhood, which were built in the 1950s. They also wanted their living room ceiling to resemble the hull bottom of an old ship. “We used reclaimed 18th century beams from a mill in Virginia,” says Ryan, who sourced the materials and directed every detail of the home’s construction. “The beams are held together with mortise and tendon joints, which was a challenge.” Every piece of wood used in the home was custom and arrived prefinished from a cabinet factory. “Every cut we made to the wood had to be perfect,” he says. The home is truly one-of-a-kind, with every detail custom made. “There are 20,000 individually dipped cedar shakes on the home’s exterior,” says Ryan. “We hand-dipped them in an opaque stain and hung them to dry on clotheslines before repackaging for the sub-contractor to use.” Walls of ash with oak floors give the home its beach cottage look and feel. Mint Hill Cabinet Shop in Charlotte provided the beautiful distressed kitchen cabinets, made to resemble old shutters. The homeowner, once a designer herself, provided the vision for the home’s interior. She imported the wallpaper from England and

had every sheet, chair, curtain or pillow custom made. No detail was too small. Even the individual slats of the interior blinds were custom painted to resemble driftwood. Her thoughtful design is carried through every detail of the home, including the cork walls and floors of the 300-bottle wine cellar and a door of knotty alder. The glass transoms over the shower doors are not only practical but they also add an elegant touch to the home’s architectural details. The fireplace surround, cut from one piece of solid stone, is honed soapstone, which is naturally occurring on the Crystal Coast. It complements the polished soapstone of the kitchen counters. “I was pleased to find so many skilled craftsmen in this area,” says Ryan, who explains that with the construction of this home, Andrew Roby opened its new coastal division and is now one of the largest contractors in the area. “This gold-certified home is the first of its kind here, but it won’t be the last,” he says. “We are happy to be a preferred FORTIFIED Home™ builder now. The homes we build here will be not only beautiful, they will withstand whatever Mother Nature throws their way.”v

Design For All: The 2013 Kitchen and Bath

Which colors, fixtures and finishes do the na-tion’s best designers use in their kitchens and baths? The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) surveys more than 300 member-designers each year for its annual trends report, in addition to handing out awards for out-standing designs in kitchens and baths.

If this year’s report looks very similar to last year’s, it is be-cause the strongest kitchen and bath trends from 2012 are back again and more striking than ever, indicating these trends have true staying power, even with a few tweaks here and there. We covered the highlights for you and made an easy go-to list of top trends this year.

Sophisticated Shades of Gray Designers’ use of gray color schemes in the kitchen and bath came on strong last year, but grew even more significantly this year. The NKBA designer survey showed 55% of designers surveyed had recently used grays in their kitchen designs and 56% had used gray in the bath. White and off-white are still the most popular color schemes, but gray is quickly becoming the new neutral, in a sophisticated range of warm and cool tones for cabinets, walls and counters.

Transitional Style Takes Over Defined by the NKBA as a seamless blend of traditional and contemporary, transitional style has taken the lead over traditional styles, which reined until 2012. One example of transitional style in the kitchen would be combining finishes, with the use of granite in a matte finish on the countertops and combining glass and stone on the kitchen backsplash.

White Wins Again The popularity of white cabinetry has grown since 2010 and is still the preferred finish for kitchens and baths. This year 67% of designers said they were currently using white cabinets, up from 59% last year. Designers like the nice clean look and flexibility of white, which allows them to create beautiful focal points in any kitchen or bath.

Fixtures and Finishes Keep it Light Again this year, there was a preference for using a combination of shimmering surfaces in kitchens and baths. Granite remains the countertop material of choice, with quartz running a very close

second. The preference for glass backsplashes has grown dramatically over the past three years, from 42% use in 2010 to 64% this year.

Universal Design For All Universal design is a growing trend that seems to be having its come-out year in 2013. Referring to design that is functional, accessible and beautiful all at once, universal design elements can be seen in multi-height kitchen counters, pull out shelves, wide doorways and halls, and lever door handles and rocker switches.

Other Trends With the importance of energy efficiency, LED lighting is being specified by a higher percentage of designers. Only 50% of designers said they had used LED in 2010, while last year 77% of designers were using LED lights, indicating a trend with serious staying power. Touch-activated faucets are growing in popularity, even though pullout faucets are still in the top position. The preferred finish for faucets is satin nickel, which has been on the rise since 2011. Bronze and oil-rubbed finishes are also being used more often, with polished nickel and chrome dropping in popularity. Ceramic and porcelain tile, while still the most popular flooring choices, are on the decline. Natural stone is the second most popular choice. Overall, designers continue leaning towards practicality. They are incorporating more flexible storage and easy-access elements using a foundation of sophisticated neutrals and the clean lines of transitional styling. v

Countertops Granite is always in style for countertops – it’s durable, gorgeous and easy to care for, and it offers such a wide range of colors and textures, it satisfies most tastes. For something different, however, try solid surface or quartz, materials that are on the rise this year, along with reclaimed wood and even concrete. “Quartz is the closest thing to bulletproof,” says award-winning designer Kathleen Dono-hue of Neil Kelly Designs. It’s a no maintenance material made of a composite including granite, marble and 93 percent quartz. With the wide range of colors and less fussy design than granite, it’s easy to complement any kitchen cabinet or backsplash style. Reclaimed wood of-fers a unique, warm and beautiful material that gives your modern kitchen strong personality and a charming look, while concrete offers a unique and customizable look with shaping and stains.

Appliances From refrigerators to sinks, ovens to micro-waves, the stainless steel trend is not going any-where. Though color is trying hard to sneak in the back door with bright blenders and bold coffee makers, steel still reigns supreme when it comes to the big boys. To add a pop of color, consider a bold range hood or bright red AGA stove cou-pled with cool, ever-complementary professional stainless steel. Professional grade appliances are on trend for 2013. Simple, one bowl sinks are the new stylish and functional, accommodating all the dishes at once – even the giant roasting pan. Unique colors and finishes are adding spunk. Retro stoves or refrigerators are, surprisingly, on the rise, giving way to pops of color and unique elements to an often predictable room. Appliances that have convenient features and that also serve double duty are topping the list of must-haves. Microwaves that double as ovens or warming drawers, fridges with convertible drawers and hot water dispensers that make tea and coffee a snap.

We’re not quite clear on when it happened precisely, but somewhere along the way, powder rooms transi-tioned from a luxurious respite for women (especially) and men to an all-business room in the home. What once was an extension of the swanky in-home cocktail party or comfortable dinner has moved to a drab hole

beneath the stairs that requires a ‘get in/get out’ mentality. Where are the fluffy hand towels, the scented soaps and the expansive furry rugs underfoot? And the wide sinks? Even the mints and the occasional telephone? The days of the strictly functional and boring powder room are long gone; mak-ing room for style that can be just as dar-

ing as the other rooms in your home. With fearless wallpaper designs, brave colors and

striking fixtures, any powder room becomes a design element of the home worthy of a

second look and certainly an expression of taste and design, inviting guests to take their time, get

themselves together and perhaps even linger for some gossip. The NKBA Trend reports for 2013 include bathroom elements like faucets with advanced technology, bold tile designs (even black! Gasp!), hammered metal sinks and even leather-clad vanities - proving that true style and adventure cannot be forgotten in this oft-over-looked room. So throw up a chandelier, lay down a geometric rug and bathe the room in unnatural light. Put up the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign and make that secret phone call. There are so many ways to play, why have limits based on dimensions?

Large Format Tile While last year saw a resurgence of the larger subway tiles and floor tiles as large as 3 feet, this year tile is doing one better with even larger rectangular pieces that cover 3 to 6 feet at a time. An uncluttered, contemporary look that’s easier to clean than standard tile.

Digital Inkjet Printed Tiles Mosaics have been taken to another level with photorealism. Aided with cutting-edge technology, any image can be pixilated and reassembled using a tile palette – creating beautiful large-scale mosaic murals.

Textured and Dimensional Tile Adding textures and dimensions to a room with tile can create a fantastic focal point in any room and this year’s creations are no exception to style. Animal print, pebble ef-fects and hard material weaves are on the rise.

Large Scale Patterns Patterns on tile are sharp and stylish, a perfect way to accent a space and create larger-scale impact in small or large spaces.

Glass Backsplashes Be on the lookout for back-painted, solid glass panel backsplashes in contemporary settings, which provides an ultra-clean, al-most ethereal look to a polished, modern kitchen setting.

Grey is the New Neutral The story of the 2013 Kitchen and Bath Show has been 50 shades of grey. The palette includes varying shades of grey and taupe, making it easy to pair with nearly any design.

Growing up in Brazil, Silvia Wozniak frequently enjoyed swimming in her family’s pool. When she moved to the United States, first to New York City and then 13 years ago to the Charlotte area with her husband, Robert, she was never able to have a pool and began to miss it. Her husband seemed to notice. “For my birthday, Robert took off from work and picked the kids up from school,” she says. “He told me to meet him at 217 Fairwood Avenue. When I got there, I realized it was Pool by Design and that I was getting the pool of my dreams for a gift.” Friends and family warned her that installing a pool would mean ongoing maintenance hassles and extra work. Undaunted, the Wozniaks

began working with Pool by Design to fit the pool into their natural landscape. Located in a small neighborhood, their home backs up to a heavily wooded seven-acre park that is sparsely populated most days. They did not want a rectangular block of a pool that would stick out from the rest of the natural environment. Pool by Design’s team recommended a free-form pool and spa on two levels, complete with a natural waterfall falling between carefully placed boulders. “A specialist came and placed the waterfall boulders one by one,” Silvia says. “It looks like he replicated nature.” The “English Garden” method of installing the pool deck’s surrounding concrete adds another natural element and provides an Old World touch in the design.

Pool by Design then constructed a bench underneath the waterfall portion of the pool so the family could enjoy its natural “jet” action when seated. Silvia, however, was concerned about her children’s safety, since they were eager to jump off the waterfall side into the pool. “Pool by Design found a solution by designing a tile perimeter around the bench that increases it’s visibility,” she says. To answer the Wozniak’s original fears of post-installation maintenance issues, Silvia says Pool by Design’s staff walked them through the process and educated them on how to deal with routine issues. “We felt taken care of by Pool by Design,” she says. “They didn’t abandon us when the work was done.

“They even took care of the uneven, sloping terrain in the backyard, which was not easy. And when we had a heavy rainfall that washed a lot of dirt into the pool before we could hire an independent landscaper, Simon Spiers [owner of Pool by Design] personally came out over a weekend to solve the problem,” explains Silvia, who is happy to be enjoying her third summer in her birthday pool. “The pool is beautiful and a lot of fun.”v

A sunroom can be perfect for long weekend breakfasts or lazy afternoons spent lounging, with large windows that let the light pour in. The best sunrooms, in my opinion, have no TV and serve as a place to read books or catch up with friends. It’s a room to explore color and pattern freely, and the view outside is art in itself. Meant to be calm, light, comfortable, yet bright and, most of all, serene. Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of creating such a room for my clients Jen and Cam Dyer. With four double windows and two sets of floor to ceiling French doors, I knew tall dramatic curtains were my first priority. Without a lot of wall space for art and paint color, and to soften all the glass, I chose an organic floral pattern with colors pulled from the nearby living space. These

window treatments are the focal point — the statement. Made beautifully and hung high, they’re visible even from the front door, so similar colors were important. This space was long and somewhat narrow, so we created two areas. The comfortable lounge area is anchored with the fireplace and a centered graphic flat weave rug. The two chairs and sofa were all recov-ered and repurposed. I chose solid, soft che-nille for the sofa and a light, airy stripe for the chairs, running the pattern horizontally for a more modern look. Chandeliers an-chor both the lounge area and the dining area – on a dimmer of course! Fill the space with live plants (silk should be outlawed!); tall fiddle fig tress are easy to care for and grow quickly with their large

flat leaves. Layer your patterns; graphic, or-ganic, solids, stripes, all in like colors. Try a bench on one side of your dining table with chairs on the other. Cluster your accessories in odd numbers and keep the scale large – too many small knick-knacks only clutter any space. And of course, mix your styles a bit: a traditional table base with a mid-century style mirror; a stripe chair with a

crewel pillow alongside a modern shaped coffee table in a rustic burlap fabric. Layer-ing upon layering is always the key!v

We’re approaching the time of year when homeowners across the South crave one thing in their backyards – shade. Trees are a natural shade source, but they are often in scarce supply in backyard landscapes, especially in newly built neighborhoods. Sometimes they don’t provide enough shade to ensure comfort in outdoor spaces and it is necessary to turn to man-made structures to find respite from the sun’s rays. George Crump, stone craftsman and owner of The Stone Man, can build three types of structures that add that coveted bit of shade to homeowners’ outdoor environments. Which structure you choose, however, is a matter of aesthetic preference, budget and desired quality.

Pergolas Pergolas, typically designed as unattached structures to the house, are garden focal points that provide shade for a walkway, seating area or alfresco dining. Arched or squared designs can add to a home’s curb appeal. “Pergolas are inexpensive and provide shade, but no weather protection,” says Crump.

Covered Porches Unlike pergolas, open covered porches provide both shade and weather protection. They can wrap around a house, attach to the back as an added room or attach to the front as a statement-making entrance. As single or multi-level structures, porches can contain TVs, seating and dining areas, and stone fireplaces to increase comfort levels and blend seamlessly with indoor rooms. “Open covered porches let homeowners feel they are outside,” says

Crump. “Porch designs can take many forms, from rustic to a highly finished aesthetic with detailed trim.”

KiTChEN dESigNEr: Caren Bistany Designs by Anne Marie Ashley

This lakefront kitchen was designed by well-known Charlotte kitchen and bath designer Caren Bistany of Caren Bistany Designs. The kitchen truly served as the heart of the home for the client as the homeowner is an avid cook. “We really worked on all the details to really fit her style, her storage needs and cooking needs,” explains Caren. “once she chose the AGA stove, we designed the whole kitchen around it.” It was a bit of a challenging space because of the long and narrow shape, but Caren worked closely with designer David Smith to create cabinetry that not only complemented the color scheme but provided plenty of functionality for a cook’s kitchen. “The space really lent itself best to a banquet table,” says Caren. “And in the end, it added a bit of great drama to the kitchen look as well.” A grill off to the side was also a key feature with its own area and panels behind it that open up for storage. The goal was achieved in this design, with a clean aesthetic that was also warm and welcoming.

As parents, we all try to give our kids the best childhoods we can. We look through home magazines and catalogs and see these amazing spaces for kids and we think, “I’d really like to have that for my kids!” My wife and I talk all the time about how it can be unfortunate for many families; it often takes years to build wealth and by the time you can afford some of these luxuries, your kids are all grown up and moved out of the house. However, I think we can all give our kids special spaces, no matter our budget. It just takes a little creativity and imagination, which happen to be two things our kids can teach us a lot about. In today’s environment, many families have either been forced to downsize or stay in a home that they have outgrown. One thing we know about kids, on the other hand, is that they don’t need a lot of space to have fun. Actually, it’s often the smallest spaces that offer coziness and child-hood allure - bunked or lofted beds, for example, in shared bedrooms. There are many bunk beds to choose from, but you can customize them to make them even more fun. Close it in to make a faux tree house or add a staircase for easier access. Don’t let small spaces limit your creativity.

I think it is a great idea to create your home around your children’s needs. If you’re renovating a bathroom that will be used by your children, why not lower the vanity or add a built-in stool? You could also use smaller toilets, low hooks for towels and perhaps a heated floor and recessed heat lamps for post-bath comfort. Just as experts suggest when baby-proofing your home, get down on their level to see how your home can better accommodate their needs. Even better, ask your kids for their ideas! Recently, I’ve noticed families adding more whimsy to their children’s spaces. Tile mosaics, bright colored walls and even colorful granite are becoming more popular in kids bathrooms. Faux painted walls are often seen in kids’ bed-rooms, and we have completed many playrooms with barn themes, beauty parlors and storefront clubhouses, allowing kids to pretend like they are running a business or shop. The possibilities are endless for how you can make your home more kid-inspired. Having kids in the house can certainly create challenges in organization, but you can add some features to your home to solve these problems too.

Can you add a laundry shoot to keep clutter out of bedrooms and dirty clothes localized to the laundry room? Do you have space at your entryway to add a “landing station” for shoes and backpacks? We asked Cindy Smith and Jane Schwab of Circa Interiors in Charlotte to give us the rundown on one of their most recently designed client spaces. Here, they explain why this space works so well and outline some of the key design elements used to create it. You can see this space and many more in their new book The Welcoming House. “Our client needed a masculine study to relax and watch television in, with comfortable seating and a big flat screen TV. Bookcases were added alongside the TV (not seen) right in front of the couch for a cozy “library” feel. Some people say building a custom home is one of life’s most stressful experiences. It’s highly probable those who feel this way are not Arthur Rutenberg Homes customers.
