I am thrilled to introduce you to the extraordinary range of concerts being presented at Melbourne Recital Centre over the next few months. For me the chance to revisit the jazzy, soulful and popular hits of the American Songbook as performed by its greatest interpreters is a ‘must’ and the elegance and virtuosity of violinist Arabella Steinbacher will be a dazzling tour de force. The visit of an international orchestra is a rare and special event, an adventure for both orchestra and audience. I’m so excited and proud that we have the Mahler Chamber Orchestra performing at the Centre in June. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff plays Beethoven’s noble Violin Concerto (13 June) and cellist Alisa Weilerstein performs Shostakovich’s searing Cello Concerto No.1 (12 June) while the ringing themes of the symphonies of Dvořák (From the New World) and Schumann (Rhenish) conducted by Daniel Harding will live in the memory for a long time.

Since his days with Blood, Sweat & Tears in the mid-70s, followed by stints with Billy Cobham, Miles Davis and Michael Brecker in the 80s, Mike Stern has used his jazz roots as a base to explore rock, swing, funk, blues and world music. With a solo career spanning nearly 30 years, the six-time Grammy nominee and recipient of Guitar Player magazine’s Certified Legend Award for 2012 is not afraid to bring numerous styles and ideas – however diverse – into the same place just to see what happens, moving between straight-ahead jazz and rock fusion with consummate skill. He takes to the stage with his long-time collaborators, the brilliant drummer Dave Weckl (George Benson, Robert Plant, Chick Corea Elektric Band), soulful tenor saxophonist Bob Franceschini (Paul Simon, Michel Camilo, Willie Colón) and masterful bassist Tom Kennedy (Lee Ritenour, Steps Ahead).

James Carter is a powerhouse musician and one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation. Raised in Detroit, he grew up surrounded by music, absorbing everything from funk and fusion to rock, soul and acoustic jazz. Since bursting onto the New York circuit under the auspices of Lester Bowie, Carter has spent the last quarter century propelling jazz full-tilt into the future with his technical proficiency and enthralling improvisations. Equally expressive on soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax, his boundless musical fluency traverses the full spectrum of jazz from swing, blues, boogaloo and bop through to more avant-garde styles. Match him with Hammond B3 star Gerard Gibbs and veteran Detroit trap master Leonard King, and you’ve got a killer trio that is the very embodiment of cool.

This new suite by Melbourne composer and percussionist, Alastair Kerr, brings the aesthetic of Brazilian rhythms – exciting, multi-layered and diverse – to contemporary Australian jazz. Expansive and beguiling, mischievous and beautiful, The Archer and the Dancer is inspired by the berimbau, a single-string Brazilian percussion instrument which represents The Archer and forms part of the traditional musical accompaniment to the Brazilian martial art, capoeira, which signifies The Dancer. The interplay between the two was central to the development of capoeira as an art form, where mischievousness, beauty and improvisation combine.

Solo in Red, by acclaimed Melbourne composer Kynan Robinson, is a musical exploration of the sparseness and fragility of Cormac McCarthy’s writing. With the novels Blood Meridian, Suttree and The Border Trilogy as inspiration, Robinson’s composition is textured, multifaceted and complex, a hauntingly beautiful work. Following its heralded debut in 2012, Solo in Red brings together a unique fusion of words, music and images, performed by renowned Melbourne sextet, Collider.

Major prize-winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition, Dmitry Onishchenko, stunned audiences in Sydney with his arresting technique and thought-provoking interpretations. Flinders Quartet is thrilled to welcome him to the stage for the emotional power of Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet. Bringing light into the darkness is Ravel’s luminescent String Quartet and Ian Munro’s Divertissement sur le nom d’Erik Satie.

Melbourne Recital Centre and Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) continue to celebrate the work of leading Australian composers in this chamber series curated by ANAM faculty and special guests who also perform alongside ANAM musicians.

Gordon Kerry’s music ranges from symphonic and chamber music to choral music and opera, frequently incorporating varied literary associations. A University of Melbourne composition graduate, he has combined his composing with music journalism, writing and arts administration. Kerry is regularly commissioned by Australian orchestras, chamber ensembles, festivals and soloists, as well as ensembles in the USA and Europe. Rasa Duende is a collaboration between internationally acclaimed musicians Bobby Singh (tabla), Adrian McNeil (sarod) and Damian Wright (Flamenco guitar). A true musical journey from the rich, vibrant tapestry of India to the rolling olive groves and old world taverns of southern Spain. Flamenco music was created by what began as an extensive journey by the original Gypsies from northern India through the Middle East, North Africa finally arriving in Andalusia in the south of Spain. Rasa Duende express a meeting of the two distant points of this journey through a deep understanding of Indian classical and the folk music of India, as well as the songs, dances and rhythms of Flamenco.

Melbourne-based jazz darling Michelle Nicolle returns with her ensemble to perform the music of one of the giants of the Tin Pan Alley era, Jimmy Van Heusen. Judy Garland was the queen of Broadway and film; Patsy Cline was the most successful country music star of her time; and Billie Holiday was the lady who sang the blues.

Melbourne Recital Centre’s Spotlight Series is pleased to introduce the Australia Quartet. Featuring Tamara Anna Cislowska (piano), Veronique Serret (violin), James Wannan (viola) and Thomas Rann (cello), the Quartet champions contemporary Australian composers and breathes new life into rarely-performed masterpieces while also presenting the best-loved works of the piano quartet canon. The Quartet introduces a newly arranged work by Elena Kats-Chernin, Winter, inspired by her earlier large-scale work The Seasons. Mahler’s youthful passion for the piano quartet is displayed in his early work in A minor, while Schnittke’s Klavierquartett was inspired by a Scherzo fragment, which the master never completed.

The language of music, and the music of languageScholars throughout history have contemplated the association between music and language, including Plato, Rousseau and Darwin. Charles Darwin speculated that before our ancestors developed the capacity to communicate through language, they communicated using an earlier music-like ‘protolanguage’ that was highly emotional in nature. This talk explores the emotional nature of music and its association with emotional speech, showing that emotion is a pivotal link between these two forms of human communication.

If you want your preconceptions to be challenged, to hear familiar music made new, then firebrand virtuoso Sergio Tiempo’s the musician for you. The fearless pianist isn’t afraid of playing fast and loose with venerable masterpieces, zapping them back into life with his electrifying energy. He has left audiences and orchestras around the world buzzing with excitement.

It’s probably no surprise that the Venezuelan-born Tiempo is the protégé of another iconoclastic musician, Martha Argerich. His Great Performers recital program is almost an homage to her red-hot interpretations of those stalwarts of the repertoire, Chopin, Ravel and Liszt. But here the comparisons end: Tiempo is an original and finds his own way though these masterpieces. Chopin’s B-minor Sonata is a paradox: turbulent and theatrical, yet intensely introverted. With its aria-like slow movement, it’s more grand opera than chamber music. The three pieces of Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit are studies in elegant devilry and fiendish technical difficulty, especially the last – Scarbo – where a goblin malevolently flits across the keyboard and into your nightmares. Liszt’s prayer-like Consolation No.3 should soothe your nerves with one of the most ecstatically soaring melodies the composer ever penned,and a demonstration that Tiempo is capable of rapt delicacy as well as the Latin fire of Ginastera’s vivacious Argentinean Dances.

Melbourne pianist, conductor and composer Stefan Cassomenos, one of Australia’s most vibrant and versatile musicians, embarks on a personal quest to discover magnificent music lurking in the outwardly functional étude. This unique recital showcases 12 of Stefan’s favourite studies by four different composers. From Liszt’s virtuosic evocations of fairy-tale Romanticism and Rachmaninov’s iconically Russian masterpieces, to Debussy’s palate-cleansing sorbet and Ligeti’s electrifying, award-winning tours de force, this recital presents a thrilling journey through four contrasting perspectives on pianism and composition. Making up the baker’s dozen is Carl Vine’s Toccatissimo which is, according to the composer, ‘an extreme toccata, not for the faint-hearted.’

Daniel de Borah (piano) and Kristian Winther (violin) invite you to experience the sheer grandeur of Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, the most majestic of the composer’s ten sonatas for violin and piano. Prokofiev’s lyrical second violin sonata completes the program. Originally conceived as a flute sonata, this is vintage Prokofiev in the vein of Peter and the Wolf and the Classical Symphony.

This repertoire shows off the versatility and wide-ranging interests of the musicians. Alongside two Brahms sonatas – rightly acknowledged as core repertoire for this instrumental combination – there is also one by Schnittke. The programs also allow the solo talents of each performer to shine. Jian brings his unique perspective and captivating style to the beloved solo suites by Bach and Bernadette showcases her trademark virtuosity and imagination in Carl Vine’s legendary Sonata No.1.

Jian Wang (cello) first came to international attention as a diminutive child cellist in the 1970s documentary From Mao to Mozart. Since then his career has taken off. In 2006 he was part of an incredibly successful collaboration with Australian pianist Bernadette Harvey with both performers enjoying a wonderful and easy partnership. Musica Viva is delighted to rekindle the collaboration, sharing its excitement with a much wider audience. ‘Somehow, playing with Bernadette just brought out the best in me,’ says Jian.

Three of Australia’s premier musicians, with backgrounds in world, classical, ambient, jazz and rock music, present a concert which sees them produce a three piece, orchestral fusion of acoustic, electric and synthesised music. Vienna is as much renowned for its sweet-tooth as its music, and this concert presents a dessert trolley of treats. Mozart’s racy overture to his sublime farce acts as curtain-raiser. The violinist creates spun-sugar tracery in Schubert’s Rondo, a ‘layer-cake’ where a delicious tune returns again and again. Mozart’s Symphony in A is widely regarded as his first mature masterpiece, where melody and form, grace and energy, sweetness and savour find perfect balance. There’s a dash of whimsy in its hunting horns and dances and, in the finale, a tantalising foretaste of the skittering excitement of Figaro.

The Asia-Pacific and International Chamber Music Competitions have become important and much-anticipated highlights of Melbourne’s musical calendar. They’re an opportunity to discover the new talent, immerse ourselves in a week of fabulous music-making and, in the case of the Asia-Pacific competition, engage with a region which is the fastest growing market for classical music in the world. The spotlight that the competition shines on Melbourne positions our city as a cultural centre of excellence in the region.

It’s also extremely gratifying to see ensembles which have been through the baptism of fire of competing go on to have busy careers in Melbourne and Australia, adding to the richness and diversity of Melbourne’s enviable classical music scene. Audiences ‘bond’ with ensembles as they watch them move through the competition and this relationship can endure long afterwards. Several past competitors perform regularly at Melbourne Recital Centre as part of our Local Heroes program, and their enthusiasm for performing and their rapport with their audience is inspiring.

Once every four years the prestigious Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition attracts the finest young classical ensembles from the region to compete for coveted prizes and concert engagements. Presented by Chamber Music Australia in association with Melbourne Recital Centre, this competition is internationally regarded as a launching pad to a performing career on the world stage. String quartets and piano trios from Australia, China, Japan and Singapore will compete at ABC’s Iwaki Auditorium with the finals held in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall on Sunday July 14.

The DAG factor. Why we like music with contagious emotionsMany people enjoy music that makes them feel strong emotions. However, music psychologists have become interested in the distinction between felt emotion and the emotion that the music is representing. For example, a piece might make a listener feel little emotion, while the music itself expresses very strong emotions. Such a simultaneous difference in emotions has only recently been researched, and one study of this difference suggests that people like music when the emotion felt is well matched with the expressed emotion. This matching has been referred to as the ‘Differential Affect Gap’ (DAG). This Music on the Mind session asks how does the DAG factor work and how might it be explained.

Violist, conductor and one of the most internationally performed composers of his generation, Brett Dean joins the University of Adelaide’s New Music Ensemble-in-Residence, Soundstream Collective, in an all-Australian program including Richard Meale’s Rimbaud-inspired magical sextet, Incredible Floridas, one of the best known pieces of Australian music. Also featured are two of Dean’s favourite Australian contemporary composers, Anthony Pateras and James Ledger. Dean’s Old Kings in Exile was described by Ivan Hewitt of London’s Daily Telegraph as a ‘masterly achievement.’

Michael Smallwood’s sell-out concerts with MASC showed him to be a master communicator at the very peak of his powers. In this unforgettable concert he presents Schumann’s intensely personal Dichterliebe (The Poet’s Love). For Dichterliebe, born of his ‘year of song’, Schumann arranged Heinrich Heine’s poems to create a narrative describing the journey from passionate obsession through rejection into desolation. Michael Smallwood, celebrated for his ability to vividly convey the essence of Art Song, will be joined by pianist Eidit Golder.

In 2010, a motor bike pulled up outside the Italian café where artistic director of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra Paul Dyer was enjoying a morning coffee in Bergamo, a medieval hilltop town 40kms northeast of Milan. A beaming smile, a handshake and a greeting… ‘Ciao Paul, Ciao!’ It was the stunning Italian virtuoso Baroque violinist, Stefano Montanari. Together they arranged a program of music for Celebrazione! right then and there. Fiery and passionate, Stefano plays Baroque violin with exquisite precision. Together, Stefano and Paul have chosen some of the finest Baroque pieces for audiences to enjoy including Veracini, Geminiani, and Brescianello. Hear sweeping, rich, warm tones from the strings of the Brandenburg and exciting trumpets in full blaze for the opening and closing of the concert complemented by the beautiful tone of Principal Baroque Flute, Melissa Farrow.

Throughout history, faith has inspired some of the most beautiful music ever written. Simon Rickard (curtal) joins Baroque trio Latitude 37 in this celebration of 17th-century Italian music with a program exploring the fascinating interplay between sacred and secular, comprising contrafactum madrigal settings by Monteverdi and da Rore with instrumental music by Fontana, Merula and Castello presented in the sequence of a Catholic mass.

Travelling towards the light involves leaving the darkness where we wander, ponder, fret and falter. The clarinetist in Adès’ Catch plays a mad game of ‘Cat and Mouse’ with the rest of Syzygy Ensemble, Itoh’s Sounds and Shapes presents large architectural sonic sheets for audiences to lose themselves in while Ronsholdt’s Die Wanderin takes the themes associated with pilgrimage, themes which fascinated Schubert, and turns them into nightmares. This is a musical, visual and spatial reflection on the wonderment of learning, growing and changing.

Melbourne-based pianist Daniel de Borah is joined by Andrew Goodwin (tenor) to perform one of Schubert’s most important and widely performed and recorded cycles, Die Schöne Müllerin (Fair Maid of the Mill). A young man wandering through the woods stumbles across a brook, which leads him to a mill and to the miller’s daughter. Ecstasy soon turns to despair in this collection of 20 poems by Wilhelm Müller, set to achingly beautiful music by Franz Schubert.
