TWENTY YEARS AGO, Ipswich was an unexceptional,

unappreciated quarter of an otherwise thriving but perhaps undistinguished county. Years of neglect left the docklands resembling a ghost town, haunted by failed factories and scavenging seagulls and the town centre seemed to lull along with nothing much to show in the way of culture.

But today, the town is unrecognisable as this downtrodden underdog and is instead home to one of Britain’s most progressive arts scenes, and has inspired a celebration of our culture throughout the local community.

When Jerwood DanceHouse emerged on the Waterfront,

Is Ipswich the most cultured town in Britain?Pamela Mardle investigates the art and culture on our doorstep...

new home to the ambitious DanceEast, it seemed to reignite Ipswich’s passion for the arts across all disciplines.

“DanceEast is one of the UK’s top dance venues and has turned the spotlight on the east of England, attracting the gaze of the world’s dance community,” says Caroline Miller, director of Dance UK.

“It’s Rural Retreats programme has brought together renowned ballet companies from around the world and even Prince Charles has visited!”

The Palace of Westminster has hosted receptions celebrating DanceEast’s Rural Retreat for senior artistic directors, and, as the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt visited DanceEast

when he was to film the venue as an example of one of the best cultural institutions in the country.

AND SO BEGAN THE discreet confidence that the town now has

to compete on a national and perhaps even global stage.

As Bryony Rudkin, Ipswich Borough Council’s culture portfolio holder says, “Ipswich offers Ip-art, East Anglia's largest arts festival, a Maritime summer celebration, an Indian Mela and a thriving visual arts scene.

“We’ve had Saatchi exhibitions, Pacitti's Spill Festival, a literary festival, top comedy and music at the Regent and we’ve got the biggest collection of Constables on show outside London. We’ve got three museums, an art school

Insolvency and Business Recovery. After an initial discussion on the phone, John put Michael’s mind at ease a little by telling him that the situation was not uncommon and that he felt he would be able to help. Michael had contacted him at the right time, whilst we still had options. Had we let matters get any worse, it would have been quite possible that we would have been unable to avoid bankruptcy. Goodness, it really doesn’t bear thinking about!

Michael met with John just a few days later, taking along every piece of documentation he could think of to give him as full a picture as possible of the dire straits we were in. They talked through in detail exactly what had happened to result in us being in this dreadful situation. Michael left John to go through all of the information and assess whether he believed he could help. Thankfully, the next day, Michael received a very positive call from John. He’d looked at our case and felt that he would certainly be able to assist in attempting to move us out of the rut we’d found ourselves in.

T HE NExT STEP was to meet with John again, together with an Insolvency

Practitioner whom John regularly works alongside. The word ‘insolvency’ sent shivers down my spine, but John reassured Michael that seeking help now would provide the best opportunity for a positive outcome. The Insolvency Practitioner was there to deal with the financial and practical issues, whilst John concentrated on the legal aspects, including dealing with the Statutory Demand.

Having reviewed our situation,

they assisted us in preparing a proposal which was put forward to everyone we owed money to in the form of an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA). I was familiar with the term IVA, but had no idea what this actually was or what it meant for us. Basically, an IVA is an agreement whereby the creditors are offered payment of a percentage of the sums due to them over a period of time. In our case, we were very fortunate that the IVA was swiftly approved without amendment.

This was an utter relief! It meant that we no longer had red letters and demands for payment being sent to us as these were all directed via the Insolvency Practitioner.

Whilst I’m certainly not proud that we got ourselves into such a pitiful situation and it’s unlikely that we’ll find it easy to get credit again in the near future with an IVA against our name, we are extremely relieved to have come through this, avoiding bankruptcy

and, consequently, being able to keep our house. We’ve obviously had to sell luxury items such as the boat, our daughter’s horse and have downgraded one of our cars, but we’ve simply made adjustments to our lifestyle rather than completely alter it.

M ICHAEL IS NOW looking to do freelance consultancy on the one

day a week that he’s not working, so as to bring in additional income, and I’ve got myself a part-time job in a nearby boutique.

My advice to anyone in a similar situation would be to seek help as early as possible. We were fortunate that we still had options open to us beyond bankruptcy. We should have admitted long before we did that we needed to make adjustments, but we are where we are and, thankfully, due to John’s help with the assistance of the Insolvency Practitioner, our future now looks far brighter than it did six months ago! n

Working with an interior designerClient and designer tell us how the collaboration process works

Dean anD co: Our client had purchased a luxury penthouse apartment in the seaside town of Southwold as a second home; we’ve worked with her since 2008 and were very excited about this new project. Our interior specialists worked closely with our client in the showroom to create a subtle maritime scheme that would be perfect for her seaside home. client: I’d thought that choosing a scheme for the flat would be stressful but I felt very comfortable working with the team. Shirley was very in tune with what I wanted; she helped me to select fabrics and I then borrowed the sample books to take home. Dean anD co: This is a unique service that Dean & Co. offers as it means that clients can really get a feel for the fabrics in their intended setting.

Having visited the apartment, Chris was able to recommend a curtain style and track type. client: I had no idea what would work so it was great that Chris came in and suggested what he felt would look best based on his experience. Dean anD co: In this instance we used a Silent Gliss metropole with a contemporary wave heading. We offer a wide range of heading styles, all made to measure and hand sewn. Each set of curtains we make is bespoke – no two pairs are alike.

To enhance the look and feel of a room we also provide bespoke soft furnishings like valances, headboards and small upholstery; not only this but also a range of wallpapers from the UK’s best designers to match our fabric collections for a complete, seamless look. client: The whole experience was a pleasure. I really enjoyed it, from discussing ideas, to choosing fabrics in a relaxing environment. I’ve ended up with a beautiful, classic and tasteful look that was exactly what I wanted and will enjoy for years to come.
