Dan Gierlak23rd YearEdinboro ‘83

DanGierlakenters his 23rdseason at thehelm of theEdinboroUniversity softballprogram. Theveteran coachhas led a renaissance of Borosoftball in recentyears, as theFighting Scots

won 18ormore games four of the last fiveseasons and earned a spot in the PSACTournament two of the previous three years.

That streak was interrupted a year ago, asthe Fighting Scots finished at 1316 and 410 inthe PSAC West. The 2011 Fighting Scots werehaunted by weather that forced the backup ofdoubleheaders after the team finished a verysolid southern swing with a 96 record. Eight ofthe losses came by two runs or less.

In 2010 Gierlak guided Edinboro to its second straight appearance in the PennsylvaniaState Athletic Conference Tournament, as ayoung team with freshmen at many key positions finished with a 1918 record.

In fact, they may have been in line fortheir second trip in three years to the NCAAPlayoffs if not for six straight losses to end theseason. The last two came in the PSAC playoffs.

In 2009 Gierlak guided the Fighting Scotsto a schoolrecord 26 wins, as Edinboro finished with a 2619 ledger. The 26 wins surpassed the 1986 squad which finished 238.Edinboro qualified for the PSAC Playoffs forthe second time in three years, and third timeoverall, winning a pair of games. Edinborofinished as the number two seed out of theWestern Division.

The 2009 Fighting Scot squad also hadits firstever AllAmerican, as second basemanDana Webb was named to the third team

Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllAmerican Team, and was a first team Daktronics AllAmerican.Webb also became the first Fighting Scot recognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year.

Gierlak has now guided the FightingScots to six twentywin campaigns in his 21years. He owns an overall record of 3274343.

In 2008 the Fighting Scots barely missedqualifying for the NCAA playoffs, finishing theyear with an 1820 record after losing five oftheir final seven contests.

The 2007 campaign was one of its mostsuccessful seasons in school history, as theFighting Scots made their second ever trip tothe Pennsylvania State Athletic ConferencePlayoffs, then were selected for the NCAAPlayoffs.

That marked the first time an Edinboroteam had been selected for NCAA postseasonplay. The Fighting Scots responded with a

strong showing in the MidAtlantic Regional, upsetting nationallyranked Kutztown andShippensburg before finally being eliminated.

All told, Edinboro finished with a 2122and was 127 in the PSAC West, good for second place. The season was capped by a 10 winover the defending national champion and2007 NCAA Division II runnerup Lock Haven. The victory snapped the Lady Eagles’ 34gamewinning streak.

The 21 wins represented the most sincethe 2000 team went 2115. That was also thelast team to win more conference games, asthe 2000 edition went 146 in league plays.

Gierlak began his coaching career in football before concentrating on softball. Hecoached the Edinboro softball team from198994, then after a oneyear hiatus in 1995 tofocus solely on his duties as an assistant on former head coach Tom Hollman’s football staff,he returned in 1996 and has led the FightingScots ever since.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlakgraduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’sDegree in Health and Physical Education. Hewas a threeyear letterman for the FightingScots football team as a defensive back.

Gierlak and his wife, the former Amy

Adams, reside in Edinboro and have three children, Alexandria Alicia (21), a junior on theEdinboro softball team, Daniel Jr. (Joey) (18)and Lauren (14). Amy is an Edinboro graduate,as well, and was the 1989 Nancy Acker Awardwinner, recognizing as the top senior femaleathlete at Edinboro.

Education.McDaniel played collegiately at Robert

Morris from 20052009, and was a threeyearstarter at second base for the Colonials. Herbest season at the plate came as a senior in2009. She hit .254 with seven doubles, four

home runs and 21 RBIs. The year before shehit .227 with five doubles, three triples and 20RBIs. She was part of a 2006 Robert Morristeam that finished as the NortheastConference regular season cochampions.

An outstanding student, as well,McDaniel was named an AllAmerican ScholarAthlete in 20082009 and in the fall of 2009she served as a softball undergraduate assistant. In addition, she played on the 2008U.S.A. Olympic Team in Bound for Beijing Tour.

Stephanie Cassidy at third base and classmate Marissa Pullo, a second team AllPSACWest pick a year ago, at shortstop. JuniorJessica VanDamia returns for her third season as the starter at second base whilesenior Jade Thrower and junior Ashley Blackwill anchor first.

“We have six players who have startedin the infield for three and four years,”Gierlak said.

The recipe for success all starts with AllPSAC honoree Pullo. The Tonawanda, NYproduct is fresh off another standout campaign in which she earned AllPSAC accolades for the second straight year after leading the team in batting average (.341), onbase percentage (.398), hits (29) and stolenbases (seven). In 2010, she earned PSACWest Freshman of the Year after setting theschool record with a .484 batting averagewith 44 hits.

Pullo figures to be the catalyst of theoffense again this year while hitting out ofthe leadoff spot. An allaround player, shecould hold the key to the season for theScots.

“She must have a great year for us,”Gierlak emphasized. “She is an aggressiveplayer with a great work ethic. She can hitthe long ball and then bunt for a base hit hernext time up.”

Cassidy has started 61 games over thepast two seasons after immediately earningthe job at the hot corner as a freshman in2010. Last season was a struggle for thePittsburgh native, however. In fact, Cassidy’sseason was a bit of a microcosm of theScots year as she batted .154 after hitting.310 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in2010. Still, just a year removed from showingher potential at the plate and with a strongarm, Cassidy could be a linchpin of a turnaround this year for the team.

“Steph has all the tools to be a greatthird baseman,” Gierlak said.

VanDamia returns as the starter at second base after starting 17 games while hitting .255 a year ago. VanDamia has flashedpower, smacking four home runs in 2010.

“She has a very good glove and hascome up big with her bat in big games,”

Gierlak said. “She has really worked hard hitting this offseason and I look for her to havea big year with the bat.”

First base isn’t as set in stone as therest of the infield, but still has much in theway of experience. Thrower and Black figureto split time at first, while each will alsospend time as the DH. Thrower is a fouryearstarter for Edinboro in a similar role andreturns this spring after being limited to 20games a year ago due to injury. When fullyhealthy, she possesses a power bat as shewas among the team leaders in doubles andhome runs in 2010, and has smashed 10home runs during her career.

Black, meanwhile, will see time at firstbase, DH and also behind the plate. A firstteam AllPSAC West pick in 2010, Gierlak callsthe Waterford native “one of the best hitters I

The Edinboro University softball teamhas won 18 or more games four out of thepast five seasons. The Fighting Scots havealso earned spots in the PSAC Playoffs twoout of three years.

Last year, unfortunately, was theexception as Edinboro finished at 1316 overall and 410 in the PSAC West. The seasonstarted off promising as the Scots finishedtheir seasonopening trip south at 96. Thesuccess the team found early on disappeared, though, just as did the sunny, warmweather the team enjoyed during its Floridatrip as rain, cold and postponementsplagued Edinboro last spring.

Longtime head coach Dan Gierlakbelieves the Scots aren’t far off from gettingback into the PSAC West mix, however. Manyof the same key contributors to Edinboro’s 19win season of two years ago return this springlooking for bounceback campaigns.

The strength of the team figures to be itsexperience as Edinboro boasts a veteran rosterwith eight juniors and four seniors. Just threefreshmen and two sophomores highlight thesquad this year, meaning that the FightingScots won’t lack for veteran leadership.

“I think that our team strength will bethat we have a great group of juniors andseniors who have been starting for threeand four years,” Gierlak said. “They have alot of experience, have played in big gamesand know what is expected of them in theconference.”

The PSAC West field once againappears to be strong looking at preseasonexpectations. Defending division championCalifornia (Pa.) reached the NCAATournament a year ago and received threefirstplace votes in the preseason coaches’poll, and still isn’t the favorite to win the division according to PSAC coaches – that honorgoes to Mercyhurst.

“It is very competitive,” Gierlak said ofthe division. “Cal has lost a great group ofseniors so they will be young, but they stillhave great talent on the field. Mercyhurstwill be strong again in the field and with thebats and if their pitching can catch up theywill be strong. Gannon has done a nice jobwith their players in the last couple of yearsand have one of the most dominant pitchersin the PSAC.”

Edinboro, meanwhile, was picked tofinish fifth in the Western Division. Theunderdog role suits Gierlak just fine.

Here’s a look at the 2012 Fighting Scots, position by position:

have seen here as well as in the conference.”After suffering a sophomore slump (.217, twohome runs, 11 RBIs) a year ago, Black looks toreturn to the consistency of her freshman year(.361, seven HR, 21 RBIs). There’s no question behind the plate as seniorAimee Sisson returns for her fourth season asthe starter. Over her career, Sisson has started108 games behind the plate, living up to thebilling of the term “everyday player.”

“She has been one of our leaders sinceher freshman year,” Gierlak remarked. “Shecan throw anyone out at any time at anybase.”

Sisson, though, had a down year at theplate like many of her teammates. After batting .318 with six HR and 26 RBIs in 2010, hernumbers dropped to .235, three HR and 12RBIs last season. Sisson will need to returnto her numbers from ’10 if Edinboro’s lineup

is to fully click. “We need Aimee to have agreat year with the bat. She is one of theplayers we need to have a big year for us,”Gierlak emphasized.

Backing up Sisson will be senior CaitlynRog, who Gierlak said “has the biggest heartof any player I have coached.” Junior JenniferLong also hopes to return from shouldersurgery and provide the team with depth.

Outfielders

While the infield seems set, the outfieldhas a few more questions. Junior Kari Falk isanything but a question mark, however, after backtoback stellar seasons.

“Kari is one of the best athletes on theteam,” Gierlak said. “She covers a lot ofground in the outfield and has a big bat;she’s been one of our best hitters during herfirst two years.”

Falk brings needed pop to the middle ofthe order, hitting .300 with four home runsand 15 RBIs while also slugging .522 last year.

While Falk brings steady centerfieldplay, she’ll also be called upon to pitch againthis year, leaving more questions in the outfield on the days when she takes the circle.

Sophomore Brenna Cosgrove will takea starting role in the outfield this seasonafter serving in a utility role last year. TheMcDowell High School product saw time in23 games with eight starts in her Edinborodebut last year, batting .211.

“She has worked hard this past year atbecoming a slapper and has gotten strongerand faster,” Gierlak said of Cosgrove. “I lookfor her to develop into a key player for us.”

Playing time in the outfield, though, remains up for grabs at the start of the season and could go to the hot hand at anygiven time. Sophomore Sarah Gustafson willvie for starting time after picking up just 12atbats last year. The lefty hitter brings rangein the field and figures to be another slaphitter Gierlak can move around in the lineup.

Senior Brittney Price will reprise herutility role again this year after starting 27games a year ago and 95 total during herthree years in red and white. Price’s athleticability will see her primarily play in the outfield,

but also give Gierlak several options as she hasthe capability to play at second, third or short. While without an every day spot at one position, Price figures to be “one of the keys tothe season,” according to the head coach.

Newcomer Alex Baer, who will see herfirst playing time as a college player afterredshirting last season following an allconference career at Olean (NY) High School, will also battle for playing time in the outfield after moving from the infield. Baercould bring some power off the bench forthe Fighting Scots while fighting for time atsecond base.

Another newcomer, freshman KelseyMatuszak will figure into the equation aswell. “I’ve been very impressed with her,”Gierlak said of the Avon (Ohio) High graduate. “She has a very good knowledge of thegame and will push for a starting job.”

Pitchers

Junior Amanda Shields returns as thetop pitcher for the Fighting Scots after making 12 starts with a 56 record and a 2.87 ERAlast season. Shields made 14 appearances inall for Edinboro, striking out 37 in 70 2/3innings of work. In the past two years, shehas started 21 games for the Scots.

“Amanda has looked great at times forthe first two years,” Gierlak said. “I am looking for her to take the next step in becominga pitcher and not just a thrower. She makesthe ball move and knows how to changespeeds. If she can learn to continue tochange her speeds up and hit her spots, shecan win some games for us.”

Shields has found success against thetop of the PSAC West before – in one of herstrongest outings a year ago, she limited No.24 California (Pa.) to just one run on five hitsin six complete innings of work.

Falk will also figure into the rotationequation. She led the team in wins and ERA ayear ago (66, 2.22 ERA) while working a teamhigh 72 2/3 innings in 13 appearances, 11 ofwhich were starts. She also struck out a teamhigh 48 batters while walking 32. Opponentshit .247 against her during the year.

Freshman Victoria Filbert could pro

vide some needed depth in the circle forEdinboro and allow Falk to anchor centerfield. Filbert, a fouryear starter at AlleganyLimestone, picked up over 400 strikeouts forher high school career. Her dedication to fallworkouts has put her in position to take astarting job, Gierlak said.

“She has great spin on her ball and canreally make the ball move,” Gierlak added.“She has become a lot stronger this pastyear; she will outwork you. She has to continue to improve, but I am expecting her tobe a starter for us.”

Junior Roxanne Herrington also will bein the mix with her drop ball. After appearing in three games of relief work last year,Gierlak says the key to her seeing more timein the circle is working on her control andgaining the ability to get ahead of batters.
