Excellence incoaching and awinning traditionare terms thathave become synonymous withEdinboroUniversity crosscountry and trackand field coachDoug Watts.

Since his arrivalat Edinboro in1969, the Running

Scots have experienced nothing but success, producing numerous AllAmericans and teamchampionships, as well as four individual crosscountry champions and five individual trackfirst place finishers.

Watts' coaching credentials speak forthemselves, including 37 consecutive undefeated cross country seasons and a string of over130 straight dual meet victories. Watts' squadshave also produced a total of six national championships, including backtobacktoback NCAADivision II titles from 1986 through 1988 andbacktoback NAIA titles in 1975 and 1976. Histeams can also boast six Division II runneruptrophies, plus finishes of third (twice), fourth(three times), fifth, sixth (twice), seventh (threetimes), eighth (three times) and ninth.

In total, the men's squads have 17 top tenfinishes at the national meet in the last 26years. His women's program, though yet tocrown a national champion, has also established itself as one of the premier programs inthe NCAA East Region and on the nationalstage. That includes nine PSAC championshipsin the last ten years and three East Regionaltitles in the last five years. Four years ago theFighting Scot women’s harriers placed secondat Nationals.

As a result, an "uncountable" amount ofconference, district, and regional "Coach of theYear" awards are scattered throughout hisoffice. He was inducted into the Edinboro Hallof Fame in 2004, and in 2009 was inducted intothe Northwest Pennsylvania Sports Hall of

Fame. Last December Watts was presentedthe Jimmy Carnes Distinguished Service Award, presented by the USTFCCCA. Finally, Watts wasselected for induction into the USTFCCCA Hallof Fame, and will be inducted this December. In 2007 he was recognized as the PSAC Men’sCross Country Coach of the Year.

FormerEdinboro AllAmerican JulieNemergut Yurcichreturned to heralma mater whenshe was hired asthe assistantcoach to mentorDoug Watts.

Nemergut concluded a brilliantrunning career inthe spring of2006. She capped

her career by being recognized as Edinboro’sNancy Acker Award winner, presented to thetop senior female athlete.

In cross country, Nemergut enjoyed a distinguished career, earning AllPSAC accoladesthree times and AllEast Region recognitionfour times. She won the PSAC individual championship in 2004 and 2005, and was also theEast Regional champion in 2004. She finishedthird in the 2005 regional.

Nemergut was named the 2004 PSACRunner of the Year and East Region Athlete ofthe Year after winning the PSAC and EastRegion titles, and went on to earn AllAmericanin 2004 in cross country with a 10th place finish. Edinboro finished second at the 2004National Championships, the highest finish inschool history.

She capped her senior year with her second AllAmerican performance in track & field, thanks to a seventh place finish in the 10,000meter run (37:23.05). She also reached thefinals in the 5,000 meter run, but was unableto complete the difficult double, placing 11th inthe finals.

Nemergut earned AllPSAC honors in trackin 2006 thanks to a first place finish in the5,000 meter run at the PSAC Championships. She had earlier finished ninth in the 10,000meter run at the Penn Relays.

Nemergut previously earned AllAmericanhonors in track in 2004 with an eighth place finish in the 10,000 meters. She was a nationalqualifier in 2005, but missed almost all of the

outdoor track season in 2005 due to injury.A native of Youngstown, OH, she earned

“How many times have I said this overmy long career?,” related longtime Edinborocross country head coach Doug Watts.Entering his 42nd year of directing the crosscountry program, Watts again stressed, “ “Youwin BIG races by running well ‘up front’.

“My 2010 team has plenty of team depth, but what we must have are a couple AllAmericans if we are to reach the National TopEight,” stressed Watts.

A year ago Edinboro picked up a secondplace finish at the PSAC Championships, then aweek later placed second at the AtlanticRegional to earn a trip to the NCAA Division IINational Championships for the 31st straightyear. That is the longest streak in Division II.

2009 Atlantic Regional Runner of the YearBen Hahn is a solid bet to earn his second AllAmerican honor. A bothersome knee aside,Hahn has the talent and the drive to race upfront in any meet on the schedule.

“This is my last season,” says Hahn, “and Iwant to go out as a winner in the Boro crosscountry tradition of quality runners.”

Hahn placed 17th at Nationals as a sophomore to earn AllAmerican honors, but fell to66th last year.

It was believed that the other senior whowould be considered in Hahn’s level was BarryMcLaughlin. However, the onetime AllPSACand AllRegion performer decided not to compete this year.

Two sophomores figure prominently intothe Fighting Scots hopes for a quality finish atNationals. Scott Anderson ran very well in hisfirst season as did Dustin Thomas. If they showimprovement from 2009, the team will definitely be a title contender.

Anderson was an AllPSAC and AllAtlanticRegion performer with finishes of 13th and 11th,respectively. Thomas picked up AllPSAC honors after finishing 14th.

Juniors Jake Krolick and Garth Watsonhave shown excellent fitness over the summerand should impact the Boro’s scoring squad.

Mixing in with the aforementioned veterans, any number of a relatively large Edinbororoster could supplement.

Redshirt freshmen Dylan Stevens andJordan Roose have real potential to knock off astarting spot. Sophomores Bryan Baumgartnerand Sean Naderer are seen by Watts as threatsto any of the top five veterans.

Hardworking sophomore Bart Eckel andredshirt freshmen Owen Venesky and MichaelThielman will also be contenders.

Newcomers to the team include trackPIAA state champions Alex Beardsley (3200)and Evan Miller (800). Beardsley certainly hasrunning in his genes, as his father Greg is one offour Edinboro runners to win a national championship. He did so in 1982.

In addition, Edinboro picked up two AllOhio cross country runners, Tim McConnellfrom Hudson(Oh.) High School and Matt Linkof Avon Lake (Oh.) High School, plus BryanDeibel, a top finisher at the New York statechampionships while running for Albion HighSchool.

“That’s a lot of guys vying for starting positions,” declared Watts. “Past experience tellsme good teams are made from goodintrasquad competition – and we’re going tohave lots of that.”

Following an uncharacteristic down yearin 2009, Edinboro’s women’s cross countryteam may contend for trophies at the seasonending Championships.

The 2009 finish wasn’t totally unexpectedto longtime head coach Doug Watts, whoknew he had young and building squad entering the year. A series of injuries didn’t help.Edinboro ended up finishing eighth at the PSACChampionships and eighth at the AtlanticRegional. That meant no trip to the NCAADivision II National Championships for the second straight year.

Unfulfilled in her twoyear quest toachieve AllAmerican status, senior Tina Yireturns uninjured and fit to pursue that failedgoal.

“Certainly Tina has run well enoughthroughout her career to be recognized as AllAmerican level,” surmised Watts. “But in thissport, one must capitalize on the one opportunity there is to earn the trip to Nationals, and tothis date, she has not had a good race at thosesites.”

A year ago Yi placed seventh at theAtlantic Regional in a season that saw a verystrong field of women’s runners.

“It is very important for me to be includedas an AllAmerican runner,” stated Yi. “For myteam, my school and my coach.”

In addition to earning AllRegion honorsfor the second straight year, Yi’s fifth place finish at the PSAC’s made her a twotime AllPSACcompetitor.

Junior Danielle Cerroni had a sparklingsophomore year, earning AllPSAC (eighth) andAllAtlantic Region (13th) honors. 2010 will findher again at the front of the field in championship competitions.

Hilary Weismiller, fresh off a summerinternship in Baltimore, is talented enough toscore well for Edinboro by November, althoughthe belief is the internship likely impacted hersummer training.

Junior Hannah Kucewicz and sophomoreCheryl Svetz could help.

In reality though, Watts believes that thehopes for a quality season rests on newcomers.A definite match for the Edinboro cross countrytraining model, AllOhio cross country and trackperformer Monica Ciarniello of Lowellville(Oh.)High School should bloom. New York’sElizabeth Budzinski of Depew High School has

excellent middistance speed, but may need ayear of mileage adjustment in order to reachher potential. The same may be said forPennsylvania 200 and 400meter AllPIAA performer Allison Gibbens.

Brittany Kaltenbaugh, a transfer fromWestminster College, will definitely rank amongthe top runners on the squad. Kaltenbaughwas the top runner for the Titans as a freshmanand earned AllPresidents’ Athletic Conferencehonors.

A couple of other athletes could helpshould they experience the freshman to sophomore year improvement – Lauren Scarupa andAlex Brasington.

“With only two teams qualifying forNationals out of a tough regional, the odds arenot with us to make it – still we could be in thehunt for the No. 2 spot if all things go well inSeptember and October,” related Watts.

Dave Antognoli -- 1971 National ChampionDavid Antognoli was head coach Doug Watts' first

recruit back in 1969. Antognoli is, according to Watts, the reason Edinboro became creditable on the national level, and helped lay the foundation for the successful program that exists today. The recruiting classes of197273 followed in the footsteps of Antognoli and ledto Edinboro's six national team titles.

Antognoli won a multitude of individual titles, including three national titles, and many AllAmericancertificates in cross country and track. He was awarded the Sox Harrison Award as the top male senior athlete in 1973 after winning the cross country championship in 1971, the NAIA 10,000 meters title in 1972, andthe USTFF national championship in the six mile event. He also was the top collegiate finisher in the 1972Olympic Trials.

Greg Beardsley -- 1982 National ChampionIn 1982, in a brutal combination of calfdeep snow,

20degree temperatures, and a chilling wind, the crowdat the finish line of the 1982 NCAA Division II championships in St. Cloud, Minnesota was barely able tomake out the faint outline of Greg Beardsley, whocrossed the finish line in a record 60.9 seconds beforethe rest of the field to win the national championship.Beardsley recalls his experiences as “great, but verycold!”

Beardsley won the Sox Harrison Award as the topmale senior athlete in April 1983 and was multiple U.S.Olympic Trials scorer.

Page 22Page 22 Edinboro Cross Country 2010 Edinboro Cross Country 2010

Martin Lyons -- 1991 National ChampionMartin Lyons was attracted to Edinboro due to the

strength and reputation of the Running Scots program. The Melbourne, Australia native had no trouble adapting to his move across the globe, winning the 1991 NCAADivision II individual cross country title as a freshman.

Though he came to the United States with little crosscountry experience, coach Doug Watts expected AllAmerican honors from the Aussie on the merit of histrack credentials. Lyons would go on to claim crosscountry AllAmerican honors in each of his four seasonsat Edinboro. Only two other runners have accomplished this feat since.

An eighttime AllAmerican in cross country andtrack, Lyons was the NCAA East Regional recordholderin cross country, and also hold the school record in themarathon with a time of 2:21:35, set back in 1995.

Yi Min Wu -- 1998 National ChampionYi Min Wu became Edinboro’s fourth national cham

pion after he won the 1998 national meet by a 10secondmargin with a time of 31:06.60. Wu did not lose a racethroughout his freshman season.

A sixtime AllAmerican in cross country and track,Wu was recognized as both the PSAC and NCAA EastRegional ‘Runner of the Year’ in 1998 an ‘99. He was the1999 national track and field runnerup in the 10,000meters in addition to winning the PSAC 10,000 meterchampionship. Wu earned his second AllAmerican certificate in track by also placing sixth in the 5,000 meterrun as a freshman. Wu is one of three runners to earnAllAmerican honors four times in cross country.

"Generally, we attract the middle distance and distance athlete who is seeking a special environment for running," says head coach Doug Watts about his track and cross country programs atEdinboro University. “A studentathlete should consider Edinboro because of the following reasons”:

1. A small school setting, academically oriented, that generally allows for a fuller personal development in the classroom, athletic and social activities; yet offers a large, diversified choice ofeducational majors and specialties.

2. A TEAM concept in training competition.3. A distancebased training program integrating selected road races as a training supplement.4. Division I schedule of intercollegiate competition.5. A program that allows personal direction and individualism, a proper balance between acade

mics and athletics... and fun.6. A tradition of excellence and proven success in running within an environment supportive

and respectful of distance runners.

Edinboro University is the region’s largestand most comprehensive institution of higher education.

Under the leadership of President Jeremy D.Brown, who assumed the helm on July 1, 2007,Edinboro adopted the motto, “Great Things HappenHere!” Yet the words represent much more than atagline or catchy phrase. They reflect upon a changingand growing University that strives for excellenceregionally, nationally and globally.

Founded more than 150 years ago by thedescendants of Scottish immigrants, Edinboro’s beautiful 585acre campus is now home to more than 8,700students enrolled in over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs of study. Rich in its Scottish tradition, the University’s majors in art, animation, criminal justice, education, and speech language pathology haveearned regional recognition and national accolades.

Situated almost equal distance (about 100miles) from the cultural, entertainment and majorleague sports metropolitan areas of Cleveland,Buffalo and Pittsburgh, Edinboro is less than 20miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth largestcity, and 20 miles north of Meadville, the CrawfordCounty seat.

Edinboro’s BaronForness Library has morethan 500,000 bound volumes and 1.4 million microform units, along with an online catalog access tonumerous databases and electronic reserves andarchives. The library, the region’s largest, isequipped with a wireless network, commuter labsand is accessible to users with visual impairments.

Edinboro’s physical plant and resources arebeginning to rival the faculty excellence that students have long found in the classrooms. TheUniversity is drawing more people to campusbecause of its state of the art facilities.

An investment of $200 million is allowing the

University to enhance theEdinboro experience for students through projects such asthe new suitestyle student housing complex known as TheHighlands at EdinboroUniversity. The $5 millionZafirovski Sports & RecreationArena opened in late 2009,meaning athletic teams can holdfull practice sessions duringinclement weather inside theregion’s largest freestanding, airsupported facility. The new $5million Human Services Building

will be ready for classes in January 2011 and the $23million expansion and renovation of the Cooper Hallscience building is underway.

In addition to the fiveacre Mallory Lake andample pastoral and wooded areas, there are morethan 40 other buildings on the spacious Edinborocampus, including residence halls with private orshared rooms, coed housing, honors housing andlivinglearning floors for academic and special interest student groups. Van Houten Dining Hall offers avariety of student meal plans, and Skipjack’s fastfood emporium is perfect for an energybooster atany time.

Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies andResearch, with it’s technologybased computerassisted distance learning, now offers the region’sfastest growing academic programs.

Edinboro University in Erie – The PorrecoCenter, is a beautiful 27acre campus that includesclassrooms, computer laboratory and a unique facility for hosting small conferences, business meetingsand special events. Edinboro University in Meadvilleis located in the city’s historic Bessemer Building. AllEdinboro University facilities are connected by freeEMTA bus service. In fact, in this new era of highfuel costs, students, faculty and staff can ride freeanywhere EMTA bus service is offered!

So you can see that Edinboro University ofPennsylvania, home of the Fighting Scots NCAA athletic teams and firstclass athletic venues, offers thecomplete collegiate experience for undergraduateand graduate students.

What’s more, Edinboro’s faculty and staff of800 individuals working as a single team to supportour students’ higher education aspirations, underscore our new motto. It’s true! Great things do happen here!
