Gary Kagiavas14th YearGannon ‘91

GaryKagiavas wasappointed EdinboroUniversity's firsthead coach of theFighting Scotwomen's soccerprogram in Augustof 1996. The formerGannon Universitystandout startedthe Edinboro program that year, andsince that time it

has become one of the stronger teams in theNortheast Region.

In his 13 seasons as head coach, Kagiavas hasguided the Fighting Scots to a 11011118 record. Ayear ago Kagiavas guided a young team, and onedepleted by injuries, to a 7111 finish. That includeda 32 upset of Western Division regular seasonchampion Gannon.

The year before that Edinboro finished with a1353 record. That represented the most wins inschool history, and the Fighting Scots capped itwith their firstever postseason victory. Kagiavaswas honored as the PSACWest Coach of the Year. Itmarked the third time hehad received the honor, along with 2001 and 2005.

Hosting Indiana(Pa.)in the first round of thePSAC Tournament,Edinboro handed theCrimson Hawks a 31defeat. Slippery Rockbrought Edinboro’s seasonto a halt with a 20 victoryin the semifinals. It markedthe fourth time Edinborohad qualified for the PSACPlayoffs.

In 2006, Kagiavasguided Edinboro to a 1070record. All told, theFighting Scots have wontenormore matches five

times during Kagiavas’ tenure. And once a rareoccurrence to show up in the Northeast Regionrankings, the Fighting Scots are now a weeklymember of the top ten.

The 2003 Fighting Scots had registered theprevious school record for wins while finishing witha 1271 record. Edinboro made its second appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. The Fighting Scotsclimbed as high as fourth in the Northeast Regionrankings during the year. In 2002 Edinboro fell onepoint shy of qualifying for postseason action, compiling a 954 record.

Kagiavas' teams accomplished a rarity in hisfirst six seasons, finishing with a better record eachyear. The 2001 Fighting Scots went out and postedan 1151 record, including a schoolrecord sixgamewinning streak. The Fighting Scots advanced to thePSAC Playoffs for the first time. Edinboro droppeda 10 decision to Bloomsburg in its first postseasonventure, but that could not diminish a seasonwhich saw the Scots climb as high as 14th in theNSCAA Division II rankings. Along the way, theScots defeated 13thranked Slippery Rock, 30,while suffering four of its five losses to nationallyranked opponents.

Thanks to five wins in its final seven contests,Edinboro posted its first winning season in 2000,going 1081. The Fighting Scots had a fourgamewin streak in which it held opponents scoreless for500 minutes. The team also recorded the program's first win over local rival Gannon.

soccer edition finished with a 2140 record in 1996.The ledger improved slightly in 1997, as Kagiavas'second team posted a 5101 finish. The FightingScots improved to 9100 in 1998. That included a 21 overtime win over West Virginia Wesleyan, an outfit ranked second in Division II at the time.

In 1999 the Fighting Scots posted a 991 finishto earn their first nonlosing season. Edinborodebuted in the regional rankings during the season,a first for Kagiavas's squad. Included in the victorieswas another triumph over a nationallyranked foe,as the Fighting Scots posted a 21 win at 14thranked Slippery Rock.

Edinboro saw a run of five straight winningseasons come to an end three years ago followinga 693 finish, and his Fighting Scots suffered a second straight losing campaign in 2005, finishing at 793. However, thanks to a 532 ledger in the PSACWest, Edinboro made its thirdever appearance inthe PSAC Playoffs.

Kagiavas brought a wealth of coaching experience to Edinboro, both locally and at the international level. In sports, sometimes you have to take somelumps along the way to building a winner.Edinboro University head coach Gary Kagiavasfound that out a year ago, both literally and figuratively. His youthful Fighting Scots squad sufferedthrough a 7111 finish in 2008, and not only was it ateam forced to rely greatly on youth, but it alsohad to endure injuries to several key players.

No fewer than seven freshmen, plus severalmore sophomores, saw considerable action. Thegood thing for Kagiavas is those players are now ayear older, and the longtime coach at Edinborohopes a year better.

“I expect us to be a year more mature,”admitted Kagiavas. “Last year’s players were notleading players, except for Ashley (Jones) andElise (Falatach). We played many new kids whodid not really contribute before. In reality Ithought the seniors could get us through the transition until the freshmen came around.

Unfortunately we ended up counting on the newkids anyway.”

In addition to the youth, another key factorin the team’s first losing season since 2005 was aPennsylvania State Athletic Conference that ratesamong the best in Division II. Over the last fewyears the PSAC has evolved into a very toughleague, and 2008 saw the addition of Gannon andMercyhurst into the Western Division.

“We play each team twice which makes upmore than twenty percent of our schedule,”emphasized Kagiavas.

It just so happened that the two newcomersfinished onetwo in the West, with Gannon going 1162 and Mercyhurst 1554. The second place Lakersended up winning the PSAC championship. Throwin perennial power Slippery Rock (1471),California(Pa.) (1253), and Indiana(Pa.) (1391) andit was easy to see why Kagiavas viewed his schedule like walking through a minefield.

At the same time, the evidence that theFighting Scots aren’t that far off the pace was a 32win over Gannon. In addition, Edinboro battledSlippery Rock to a 11 tie.

“The PSAC is an incredibly difficult andunforgiving conference,” explained Kagiavas. “Iam optimistic that with the kids we recruited thatthey will definitely make us better. How long willbe determined by their ability to pick up the gameplan and how quick they are able to contribute. The problem is everyone seems to have recruitedexcellent players. Mercyhurst has six new international players. California brought in the Jamaicannational team goalkeeper and a player fromGermany. Gannon had another solid recruitingyear as did Slippery Rock. So the conference willbe brutal once again.”

Kagiavas hopes the addition of his ownstrong recruiting class, the return to health of several players, and the added maturity will close thegap. “We have recruited four new forwards, some really quick and skilled players. I expectthem to help Rachel Dahlstrand so she doesn’t getdoubleteamed every game,” Kagiavas pointedout. “This year I expect players like AmberMcLaughlin, C.J. Allen and Melanie Prelec to contribute even more. Our top freshmen from lastyear got valuable minutes and understand thecommitment it takes to win in this legue. I believewe will have some kids stepping up this year whodidn’t last year due to being freshmen.

“We actually outshot seven of our oppo

nents in the eleven losses,” he continued, “but thequality of the finishing was not the best. We created opportunities that were squandered andthen gave up soft goals in return.”

Kagiavas is hoping that the influx of talented forwards will jump start an attack that scoredjust 30 goals, with 12 games of one goal or more.Defensively, he faces a huge transition with thegraduation of Ashley Jones. Jones, likely the mosttalented player to don a Fighting Scots uniformsince the program’s inception in 1996, becameEdinboro’s first fourtime AllPSAC West selection. She anchored the defense and was a major reasonthe Fighting Scots posted 22 shutouts during herfour seasons.

“It is almost impossible to replace a player likeAshley Jones,” surmised Kagiavas. “However, wedid recruit some very strong defensive players.Collectively we could be better than last year. Also,we are changing our defensive approach and strategy. This will be due to the loss of Ashley Jones, butalso due to the strengths of the new players.”

After listening to Kagiavas, however, it’sobvious that he will once again have to put up

with the perils of youth, although he feels the talent is worth it. The youth, plus the schedule, willmake for an interesting 2009 campaign.

The Fighting Scots start off the 2009 seasonon Friday, August 28, hosting Urbana.

ForwardsRachel Dahlstrand proved a huge addition

to the team a year ago after transferring fromWest Virginia University. The junior finished as theleading scorer with 12 goals and 4 assists for 28points. The 12 goals are tied for the secondhighest season total, and the 28 points is tied forfourth. Even more amazing was that she had toshake off quite a bit of rust after sitting out the2007 season at WVU and seeing limited action theyear before that.

Rachel is a strong, physical player who wasour top scorer a year ago,” Kagiavas assessed. “Ithink she’ll be able to help more this season as sheknows the system better.”

Several other returnees will look to boostthe attack. Like Dahlstrand, C.J. Allen is a juniorwho joined the Fighting Scots a year ago. Shetransferred from Wheeling Jesuit. In 19 matchesshe finished with three assists. She scored sixgoals the previous year at Wheeling Jesuit, andKagiavas expects her production to pick up.

Sophomores Amber McLaughlin and MelaniePrelec showed promise a year ago, particularlyMcLaughlin, who finished as the secondleadingscorer with four goals and four assists for 12 pointswhile playing in mainly a reserve role. Prelec sawaction in 16 matches and contributed an assist.

Kagiavas notes four freshmen who couldmake an impact in 2009. They are Dakota France,Karisa Fernandez, Jenna Madison, and CasseeKiplinger. The biggest common denominatoramong the group is speed.

“Consistent scoring was a big issue for us,”stressed Kagiavas. “All the forwards were newand were learning the system and different formations we play. We have nine players that shouldhelp in this area, each with a slightly differentstrength. Hopefully we can be more aggressive infront of the goal.”

MidfieldersYouth will likely be served in the midfield

despite the return of starters Heather Weismillerand Jessica Morgan, along with Taylor Stetka.Weismiller is a senior who has enjoyed a very solidcareer, and will now be counted on even more. Ahardnosed player who has battled injuries due toher rough style, she played in 16 matches with 15

starts a year ago. Weismiller had a goal and twoassists, off the pace of six goals and three assistsin 2007.

“Heather is a strong, physical player withthe desire to win,” Kagiavas stated. “She hasexcellent field vision, wins everything in the midfield, and starts our attack. We expect more scoring responsibilities from her this year.”

Morgan is a sophomore who started 17matches as a true freshman. She was tied forthird in scoring with a pair of goals and an assist.Kagiavas feels that with the year of experienceMorgan will take charge more in 2009, and bemore involved in the attack.

Stetka is also a sophomore who stepped inas the year went on to start 10 matches. She didnot score, but is known as a playmaker.

Two other returnees hope to make a contribution after missing time due to injuries. EmilyLeone has missed the last two seasons due to apair of ACL surgeries after starting 10 matches in2006 before going down.

Brittanie Bidak, a junior, was starting to seemore playing time a year ago before suffering aseasonending injury. She appeared in nine matches, scoring one goal.

No fewer than five incoming freshmen figure to push for significant playing time. AmandaBartell, Catherine Messmer and Alexis Dinapoliwill likely be more offensive threats, while StephTighe and Emily Marin are defensive specialists. As a group Kagiavas likes the fact that they arephysical and strong on the ball.

DefendersAshley Jones will no doubt be very difficult

to replace. But the defense has always been astrong suit of Kagiavas’ teams, and that should bethe case once again. Maria Dembrow and LaurenChristy are seniors who started 18 and 16 matches, respectively, a year ago. Then there’s DevynAgett and Jamie Warren, who saw plenty of playing time a year ago.

Dembrow is a former midfielder who hasnot approached her freshman scoring figures offive goals and seven assists for 17 points, but hasstarted 52 matches in her career. A year agoDembrow had three assists, boosting her intoninth place in career assists with 12.

“Maria has moved to defense from the outside midfield,” commented Kagiavas. “She is veryfast and able to contribute going forward fromthe defensive position.”

Christy is not a flashy player, but she is a fundamentally sound performer who has 34 careerstarts to her credit. “Lauren is a very smart player

who reads the game well and plays well underpressure,” Kagiavas noted.

“Agett suffered through somewhat of asophomore slump after starting 19 matches as afreshman. A year Agett started 11 matches whileplaying in 17, with an assist. She has plenty ofspeed and will play the right side.

Warren played in all 19 matches, with threestarts, as a freshman. Kagiavas looks for her toanchor the defense in 2009 after using the 2008season to adjust to the college game. “Jamie is anexcellent reader of the game,” Kagaivas pointedout, “and is very active in organizing all aspects ofour defense. Much is expected from Jamie.”

A pair of juniors – Shannon Seiler andNicole Rolik – round out the group of returnees.Seiler played in 11 matches, with six starts, a yearago before missing the latter part of the seasondue to injuries suffered in an automobile accident.Rolik appeared in a pair of contests.

Kagiavas singles out a trio of freshmen whocould make an impact on defense. He notes thatNicole Hoffman will likely contribute early in theseason, while Alena Costello and CaseyRogozinski are known for their mantoman defensive skills.

“We are changing our defensive organization due to the loss of Ashley Jones,” admittedKagiavas. “We have some excellent defenders toplay in the flat back four formation. This plan wasin place since last year when we knew we weregoing to have to replace Ashley.”

GoalkeepersThe Fighting Scots must replace Lisa

Bartolowits, who saw most of the action in goalthe last three years. That’s not to say that theydon’t possess experience in the net. SamanthaCairns has teased Kagiavas with her abilities, andhas started some big matches for the FightingScots, but injuries and inconsistency have held herback. The senior appeared in just five matches ayear ago, ending with a 110 record and a 2.28goals against average. However, the year beforeshe was 640 with a 1.22 GAA.

“Samantha is technically the best goalkeeper we have,” Kagiavas stated. “She can play withher feet very well. But history shows us that Samis not durable. “

Kate Stukbauer gained valuable experienceas a freshman a year ago. She played in six contests, posting a 110 record with a 1.17 GAA. “Katieis tall and very athletic,” Kagiavas commented.“She is an excellent shot blocker. I think both arevery good.”
