Dan Gierlak22nd YearEdinboro ‘83
Dan Gierlak enters his22nd season atthe helm of theEdinboroUniversity softball program.
The veterancoach guidedEdinboro to itssecond straightappearance inthe Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference Tournament, as ayoung team with freshmen at many keypositions finished with a 1918 record.
In fact, they may have been in line fortheir second trip in three years to the NCAAPlayoffs if not for six straight losses to endthe season. The last two came in the PSACplayoffs.
In 2009 Gierlak guided the FightingScots to a schoolrecord 26 wins, asEdinboro finished with a 2619 ledger. The26 wins surpassed the 1986 squad whichfinished 238. Edinboro qualified for thePSAC Playoffs for the second time in threeyears, and third time overall, winning a pairof games. Edinboro finished as the numbertwo seed out of the Western Division.
The 2009 Fighting Scot squad also hadits firstever AllAmerican, as second baseman Dana Webb was named to the thirdteam Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllAmericanTeam, and was a first team Daktronics AllAmerican. Webb also became the firstFighting Scot recognized as the PSAC WestPlayer of the Year.
Gierlak has now guided the FightingScots to six twentywin campaigns in his 21years. He owns an overall record of 3274343.
In 2008 the Fighting Scots barelymissed qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, finishing the year with an 1820 record after
losing five of their final seven contests. The 2007 campaign was one of its most
successful seasons in school history, as theFighting Scots made their second ever tripto the Pennsylvania State AthleticConference Playoffs, then were selected forthe NCAA Playoffs.
That marked the first time an Edinboroteam had been selected for NCAA postseason play. The Fighting Scots responded witha strong showing in the MidAtlanticRegional, upsetting nationallyrankedKutztown and Shippensburg before finallybeing eliminated.
All told, Edinboro finished with a 2122and was 127 in the PSAC West, good for second place. The season was capped by a 10win over the defending national
champio27and 2007 NCAA Division II runnerup Lock Haven. The victory snapped theLady Eagles’ 34game winning streak.
The 21 wins represented the most sincethe 2000 team went 2115. That was also thelast team to win more conference games, asthe 2000 edition went 146 in league plays.
Gierlak began his coaching career infootball before concentrating on softball. He coached the Edinboro softball team from198994, then after a oneyear hiatus in 1995to focus solely on his duties as an assistanton former head coach Tom Hollman’s football staff, he returned in 1996 and has led theFighting Scots ever since.
After graduating from Edinboro in 1983,Gierlak moved on to Thiel College, serving asan assistant football coach in 1984. His nextstop was semiprofessional football, directing the Chicago Cowboys to a national titlein 1984 and a secondplace national finish in1985. Gierlak returned to his alma mater in1986, serving as an assistant football coachat Edinboro for nine seasons. He wasresponsible for the recruitment and coaching of eight Fighting Scot AllAmericans, including 1989 Harlon Hill Finalist Elbert Coleand Jeremy O’Day, a 1996 firstteam AllPSAC offensive lineman and a member ofthe 1998 CFL Grey Cup champion TorontoArgonauts and 2007 Grey Cup championSaskatchewan Roughriders.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlakgraduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’s
Degree in Health and Physical Education. Hewas a threeyear letterman for the FightingScots football team as a defensive back.
Gierlak and his wife, the former AmyAdams, reside in Edinboro and have threechildren, Alexandria Alicia (20), a sophomoreon the Edinboro softball team, Daniel Jr.(Joey) (17) and Lauren (13). Amy is anEdinboro graduate, as well, and was the1989 Nancy Acker Award winner, recognizing as the top senior female athlete atEdinboro.

tent programs in the country. Slippery Rock ison the verge of being very good. The additionof Mercyhurst and Gannon has really pickedthings up.
“I think from top to bottom our divisionis the toughest,” Gierlak flatly stated. “There’snot a lot separating everybody.”
Edinboro will start the 2011 campaignwith its annual southern trip from March 511 inKissimmee, Florida. The Florida schedule getsunderway with a contest against PSAC foeIndiana(Pa.), and includes games againstNorthern Kentucky, St. Cloud State andAshland
Infielders
For starters, Edinboro can call on twostrong players at catcher. Junior Aimee Sissonis a twoyear starter who has started 79 of apossible 82 games behind the plate. After hitting .250 as a freshman with a pair of homersshe boosted her average to .318 a year ago, with six homers and a teamhigh 26 RBIs.
“Aimee is our leader,” boasted Gierlak.“She has been our leader since arriving as afreshman. She has really matured. She comesup in big games and gets big hits. I think she isthe best catcher in the conference, both offensively and defensively. We look for anotherbig year for her.”
Oddly enough, while Sisson did notreceive any postseason honors her backup,Ashley Black, was accorded first team AllPSACWest honors, albeit at designated hitter. Blacksaw little time behind the plate with Sissonavailable, but she would start there for manyteams.
Black’s bat, however, makes her a definite must in the lineup. The sophomoremoved between catcher, first base and rightfield in addition to DH’ing, and despite herfreshman status she took over as the cleanuphitter early in the year. Black was second onthe team with a .361 average in 35 games, andwas also second in runs batted in with 21. Shedisplayed plenty of power with five doubles, atriple and a teamhigh seven home runs. Theseven home runs ranks fourth in a season.
“Ashley will be in the lineup,” stressedGierlak, who once again envisions her playingin a utility role. “She has plenty of power, and
has a great twostrike approach. She canrewrite a lot of power records.”
Hardworking junior Caitlyn Rog andsophomore Jennifer Long are also available.Rog played in just two games last year, butGierlak loves her workethic and team attitude.Long did not play last year due to shouldersurgery following her senior year in highschool. Gierlak noted she can hit the long ball.
After hitting .271 with six homers and 19RBIs as a freshman Jade Thrower sufferedthrough a minor sophomore slump. Thestrong first baseman slumped to .215 with fourhomers and 13 RBIs. She could also see time inright field and at designated hitter.
“Jade has good power when she’slocked in,” stressed Gierlak. “She has one ofthe best bats on the team. She just need con
Softball coaches call them “shooters”.Stud starting pitchers. In the game of softball,if you have one you have a chance to be a bigwinner. They regularly dominate lineups, giving up a run or fewer.
Edinboro head coach Dan Gierlak hadone of those in Beth Mullins, and he rode herright arm to 30 wins and a berth in the PSACPlayoffs the last two years.
Unfortunately, Mullins did not return thisyear, leaving Gierlak with a gaping hole to fill.“We’ll miss Beth,” Gierlak admitted. “It’s a bighole to fill. The group is very talented as awhole. They can give you a lot of differentlooks. It might not be seven innings. It’s a
committee. We’ll go with the hot hand. Theyhave to learn to be pitchers, not throwers.”
Pitching aside, Gierlak has put together astrong group of young players the last twoyears who have won 45 games during thatperiod and are looking to mature into a PSACtitle contender.
For starters there’s Marissa Pullo, asophomore shortstop who may be the mostexciting player in the conference. A year agoPullo was the PSAC West Freshman of theYear.
Gierlak possesses not one but two strongcatchers in Aimee Sisson and Ashley Black.Throw in Jessica VanDamia at second baseand Kari Falk in center field and the FightingScots are very strong up the middle.
It’s the ability to play defense that reallyhas Gierlak excited. “Defensively it will be oneof the best teams we’ve had,” related Gierlak.“We have depth in the infield, we have depthin the outfield. We can make the routineplays. Plus, we can make big plays. I think thatwill be the strength of the team. We’ve reallylearned to communicate well together. Weplayed great defense throughout the entirefall.”
Couple that with a lineup that has thechance to be very dangerous from top to bottom and the Fighting Scots have a chance toimprove on last year’s 1918 finish.
“We have kind of changed our style,”Gierlak pointed out. “We have more speedfrom one through nine than we’ve had. Butwe’ll try to hit the long ball, get our cuts in.From one through nine I think they can betough outs. Power, speed – it’s a nice mix.Plus we have depth. We’ve changed ouroffensive philosophy from stationtostation tohitting the gaps and being more aggressive.”A year ago Edinboro hit 32 home runs alongwith 64 doubles. The Fighting Scots had a .471slugging percentage, ranking fourth in thePSAC.
In addition to the lack of an anchor onthe pitching staff, the schedule could stand inthe way of a third straight PSAC playoff berth.
“It doesn’t get any easier,” stressedGierlak. “California is one of the most consis

sistency. Plus, she’s worked hard on herdefense.”
In addition to Thrower and Black, Gierlakcan call on Jess White or Kaitlyn Thompson atfirst base. White, a junior, was hitless in two atbats last year, but Gierlak notes that she hitsthe ball well and has improved greatly ondefense.
Thompson is a freshman fromMadison(OH) High School who comes off aknee injury as a senior. A solid hitter, Gierlaksees her improving defensively as her kneestrengthens.
A year ago Gierlak the rest of the infieldwas comprised of a trio of freshmen, with redshirt freshman Jessica VanDamia manning second base and true freshmen Marissa Pullo andStephanie Cassidy on the left side at shortstopand third base, respectively.
VanDamia hit just .232 with six doublesand two homers but drove in 14 runs. She also
committed just eight errors and had a .907fielding percentage. She was hurt late in theyear, as was Pullo, and they were definitelymissed.
“At times last year Jess came up realbig,” pointed out Gierlak. “She was hurt late inthe year and it really hurt us, both offensivelyand defensively. She is very consistent in thefield and she hits the ball hard.”
Pullo, meanwhile, is the catalyst of theEdinboro attack. She enjoyed a recordbreaking season as Edinboro’s shortstop, breakingthe singleseason record for batting average. She finished with 44 hits in 91 at bats for a.484 average. That was tied for first in thePSAC. The 44 hits were tied for seventh in aseason, and she led the Fighting Scots with 18runs scored. She had five doubles, a triple anddrove in 11 runs. She also proved very solid inthe field with just four errors in 100 chances.
Pullo’s speed and daring on the basesprovided plenty of excitement. She finishedwith 18 stolen bases in 19 attempts, and if notfor missing eight games late in the year withan injury she was on course to break theschool record for stolen bases. As it is, the 18steals are tied for fourth in a season. When itwas all said and done, Pullo was named thePSAC West Freshman of the Year.
“Marissa is a fun kid to be around andcoach,” Gierlak grinned. “She’s a hard worker. She causes people problems offensively anddefensively. She’s very aggressive on thebasepaths. She’s also a leader on the field.”
Cassidy started 34 games as a freshman, hitting .310 with three homers and 18 RBIs.“Stephanie has one of the best bats I’ve beenaround,” beamed Gierlak. “She doesn’t letthings bother her. She has a strong arm, which can sometimes get her in trouble. Butshe came up big in big games and she hits theball hard every time. She’s a great kid tocoach.”
Unlike previous years, Gierlak has developed some depth in the infield. For starters, there’s Brittney Price and T’ana Abt. Both areversatile players who can play any infield position.
Price, a junior, was the starting thirdbaseman as a freshman, hitting .241. Shestruggled with the bat as a sophomore, hitting.189, but half of her hits were for extra bases,
with four doubles and three homers. Pricealso stole six bases. She saw most of heraction in the outfield last year before filling inat shortstop when Pullo went down.
“Brianna has a strong arm and is a goodathlete,” related Gierlak. “She has to get moreconsistent with the bat. She hit well as a freshman.”
Abt is a raw player who Gierlak feels hasoutstanding potential. The sophomorestepped in late last year when VanDamia andPullo were hurt and displayed some of thatpotential. Abt hit .229 in 35 at bats with fourdoubles and a triple.
“T’ana has the ability to be as good asanyone we have,” Gierlak predicted. “She hasto become more consistent with the gloveand at bat. She’s raw, but she’s talented andstrong, and very athletic.”
Brenna Cosgrove made a solid impression on Gielak in the fall. The freshman fromnearby McDowell High School can play shortstop and second base. “I liked what I saw inthe fall,” noted Gierlak. “She’s got a nice glovewho needs to get stronger. Brenna’s a goodathlete who runs well. As a hotter she’s a slapper.”
Amber Peluso and Tara Townsend, thetwo seniors on the team, are also in reserve atthird base. Peruso has seen limited action. Infact, in her lone at bat last year she hit a runscoring single. But Gierlak likes her attitudeand hitting ability.
Townsend joined the team a year agoafter transferring from LaRoche. Like Peluso, she had a hit in her lone at bat last year. She’sbattling a back injury and is in question thisyear.
Outfielders
About the only sure thing in the outfieldis Kari Falk, a highlyregarded pitchingprospect a year ago who ended being evenmore valuable as the everyday centerfielder.Falk started all 37 games, hitting .330 with 13RBIs. She displayed the ability to hit for extrabases, as well, with a teamhigh 11 doubles, two triples and four home runs.
Gierlak is in a quandary in regards to Falk.He knows he’ll likely need to pitch her morethis year, but admits that she is the leader in
the outfield. “Kari will pitch more this year,”admitted Gierlak. “She had a finger injury lastfall and fell behind. She has good power andhits the ball well. I’d like to see her be a littlebit more consistent with two strikes. She runswell and is wellconditioned. Kari is one of thetop outfielders in the region.”
After that, in Gierlak’s words there are a“barrage of others”. The most experienced isCarrie Hall, a junior who played in 22 games ayear ago and hit .361 with five doubles andfive stolen bases. Hall started 35 games as afreshman, hitting .221. While she can play allthree outfield positions, she’ll likely end up inright field. “Carrie is a lefty who can slap theball and puts the ball in play,” assessed Gierlak.“She runs well.”
Junior Stacie Balkovic becomes a fulltime outfielder this year after previously seeing most of her time as a pitcher. She had fourhits in 13 at bats for a .308 average a year ago.“Stacie is making a conscience effort to play in

the outfield,” stated Gierlak. “She can play inleft or right. She works very hard. If she hits, she’ll play.”
Alex Gierlak joined the Boro program ayear ago after starring as an infielder at nearbyGeneral McLane High School. Her fatherquickly found she’d be more valuable in theoutfield, and she made strong contributionsas a pinch runner and defensive player. Alexhit .250 in 28 at bats, starting 13 games.
“Alex is batting lefthanded and learninghow to slap,” related her father. “She can hitthe ball, runs well, and she came through forus last year. She’s developing a little more armstrength. She had never played the outfieldbefore.”
Four newcomers will look for playingtime. Amy Hedderick redshirted last year.Gierlak notes she still needs more work, butshe has gotten stronger and plays gooddefense. He notes she is very aggressive on
the bases. He believes she has the ability to bean everyday player.
Sarah Gustafson is another local productfrom Warren Area High School. She’s anotherplayer who can run and is a good bunter.Gierlak compares her to Cosgrove, as a youngplayer who needs to get stronger but has abright future.
Gierlak feels Brianna Perkins might be thebest athlete of the freshman class. An allstateinfielder at BolivarRichburg(NY) High School, she moves to the outfield to take advantageof her speed and strong arm. Gierlak feels shecan be a very good player as her bat develops.
Leanne Rose rounds out the deep groupof outfielders. A freshman fromEdgewood(OH) High School, she is better as ahitter than a defender right now.
Pitchers
With no proven starting pitcher, Gierlakwill mix and match with a group of foursophomores. He does have pitchers with talent, just not a proven college pedigree.
Amanda Shields turned in several strongoutings down the stretch and had a strong fallseason. Kari Falk was allstate pitcher in highschool. However, Gierlak found she was evenmore valuable in center field and at the plate.Falk will see more action on the mound thisyear, but her ability to cover the gaps in center, plus hit, may make it difficult to take herout of the field.
Shields, a lefty, saw action in nine games, with three starts. She went 13 with a 2.88ERA in 24 1/3 innings. When top starter BethMullins missed time with an injury late in theyear Shields gained some valuable experiencedown the stretch. For instance, she came in atossed 2 1/3 hitless innings against Mercyhurst, and gave up just one unearned run in 4 2/3innings in the PSAC playoff loss toBloomsburg.
“Amanda has a chance to be good,”Gierlak pointed out. “She’s a lefty whose ballreally moves. She had trouble controlling hermovement last year. She did a nice job inspurts last year.”
As a senior at Fort LeBoeuf High SchoolShields was an honorable mention AllState
selection and the Region 4 Pitcher of the Year.Falk was an even more highlydecorated
performer in high school. She led RiversideHigh School to backtoback WPIAL Class AAchampionships. She earned first team AllState honors after going 182 with 12 shutoutsand a 0.43 ERA. She appeared in just threegames a year ago as a pitcher, and just one ofthose was in the north. But she displayed theability to get good hitters out in that outing, giving up just one earned run and striking outfive in six innings against Gannon. Falk was 10with a 1.80 ERA, although she threw a total of11 2/3 innings.
“Kari won a lot of games as a pitcher inhigh school,” admitted Gierlak. “She hits thecorners and is very consistent with her location. She has long arms and legs and has adeceiving motion. She can strike out people. We kept her in the outfield last year. She willneed to throw this year.”
While Falk made the transition frompitcher to outfielder a year ago, Gierlak alsosuccessfully moved Brittney Mackey fromcatcher to pitcher. Mackey saw little action onthe mound as a senior at Edgewood HighSchool, but she was a mainstay for theFighting Scots early in the year.Unfortunately, a thumb injury forced her season to come to an early end in early April.
Mackey ended the year with a 22 recordand a 4.50 ERA in seven games. She tossedshutouts against Fayetteville State and LakeErie. In 23 1.3 innings she gave up 29 hits, walked eight and struck out 24.
“Brittney can be very good,” commented Gierlak. “She throws a lot of differentpitches. She’s becoming more of a pitcher, not just a thrower. When she’s ahead shemakes you swing at bad pitches. She’s a verystrong kid and throws hard. We’re working onher becoming smoother with her delivery.”
Roxanne Herrington is another sophomore with strong high school credentials making the transition to a college pitcher. She
appeared in just one game for a third of aninning.
“Roxie can be a very good pitcher whenshe gets ahead,” noted Gierlak. “She has agreat drop ball. She did well in the fall in certain situations. She can change speeds. Shejust needs to continue to work on her conditioning.”
Kari Falk came in with a huge highschool resume’ as a pitcher butbecame even more valuable in
center field.
With All-PSAC pitcher Beth Mullinsgone Amanda Shields looks to head
a pitcher-by-committee rotation.
