Central Oklahoma will compete as an NCAA Division II indepen-dent in all sports during the 2011-12 school year before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocition in 2012-13.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institu-tions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first orga-nized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 99 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, bas-ketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercol-legiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Ath-letics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Mis-souri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA re-organized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

the Mid-aMeriCa interCOllegiate athletiCS aSSOCiatiOn

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retire-ment in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 sea-son and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invi-tations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebras-ka-Kearney and Lindenwood.

With the departure of Nebraska-Omaha in 2011, the current mem-bership of the MIAA is at 15 schools. UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska Kearney and Northeastern State will begin league play in 2012-13.

SCHOOl niCknaMe“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. SCHOOl COlOrS

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Genny StidHaMNow in her 15th year at the helm

of the Central Oklahoma program is former All-American Genny Stidham, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national contender.

Stidham is 378-269-2 at UCO and has led the Bronchos to five national tournament berths, including the first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II World Series.

Genny, a star pitcher-shortstop for the Bronchos in the early-1990s who was inducted into the UCO Athletic

Hall of Fame in 2009, has guided UCO to the four winningest seasons in school history (41, 36, 35 and 32). She coached 75 first- and second-team All-Lone Star Conference North Division players during the school’s association with that league, winning two conference titles along the way.

Stidham took over the UCO reigns from long-time coach Gerry Pinkston in 1998 and guided the Bronchos to their first LSC champion-ship that season. UCO hosted the LSC Tournament as the No. 1 seed from the North Division and defeated Tarleton State 5-4 in the finals to claim the crown and cap a 24-15 season.

The Bronchos finished 23-23 in 1999, struggled to a 14-22-1 campaign in 2000 and were 24-22 in 2001 before breaking through in 2002.

UCO finished 35-16 and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament in 2002. The Bronchos were LSC North Division runners-up and finished second in the LSC Tournament to earn a trip to the South Central Regional, knocking off No. 12 Mesa State in the first round before being eliminated with two close losses.

A slow start and some key injuries plagued UCO during a 17-29-1 finish in 2003 and the Bronchos went 21-20 in 2004.

UCO enjoyed one of its best-ever seasons in 2005, winning a school-record 41 games (41-14) while capturing both the North Division and LSC Tournament titles. The Bronchos advanced to the Division II South Central Regional, going 2-2 and finishing 12th in the final rankings.

Stidham took UCO back to the national tournament in 2006, overcom-ing a tough finish with a stirring postseason run. The Bronchos placed third in the LSC North Division and went 2-2 in the LSC Tournament, barely making it to the South Central Regional as the No. 7 seed.

UCO cruised to three easy wins in that eight-team tournament to make the finals before edging Incarnate Word 5-4 in extra innings to claim its first-ever regional crown and advance to the Division II World Series.

The Bronchos fell to Cal State-Bakersfield in the first round at Salem, Va., rebounded to knock off No. 3-ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and then was eliminated in extra innings by eventual runner-up Emporia State to finish 31-17. UCO was ranked fifth in the final Division II poll, its highest finish ever.

Central went 29-16 and just missed out on a third straight national tournament berth in 2007, not making the field despite knocking off three ranked teams en route to a runner-up finish in the LSC Tournament.

UCO was the LSC North runner-up and made it back to the national playoffs in 2008, going 36-16 for the second-most wins in school history.

The Bronchos were North Division runners-up again in 2009 in fin-ishing 26-15 and went 32-21 in 2010 despite featuring a young squad, earning another national tournament berth after a third straight LSC North Division runner-up finish.

UCO went 25-23 last year in its final season in the LSC.Stidham is a local product of Edmond Memorial High School, collect-

ing All-State honors for the Bulldogs in 1986 before signing with Kansas.

challenging schedule awaits, but a heavy dose of returners along with some impact newcomers has Central Oklahoma looking to make some noise in 2012.

The Bronchos have back nine players -- including five every-day starters and their top two pitchers -- from last year’s 25-23 team in addition to gaining an All-America transfer and a trio of talented freshmen ready to step in immediately.

UCO appears to have all the ingredients needed to contend for an NCAA Division II national tournament berth, though 15th-year head coach Genny Stidham and her team will have to do it the hard way.

No conference affiliation in 2012 will force the Bronchos to play an even tougher schedule than usual, one that has UCO playing its first 16 games away from home and facing six returning playoff teams.

“Our schedule is really going to test us, but we’re look-ing forward to that and I think we’ve got a chance to be pretty good,” said Stidham, who has taken the Bronchos to the national tournament five times. “We’ve got some good experience coming back and we gained a few players who should be able to really help us.”

Leading UCO’s large group of returners are four senior standouts -- outfielder Kayce Raines, pitcher Rachael Steverson, second baseman Brittany Weaver and first baseman Megan Whitmire.

Junior Kacie Edwards has been a mainstay the last two years, while sophomores Hannah Justus, Amanda McClelland, Kailee Roe and Carly Skin-ner also return.

UCO gained an All-American in senior transfer Nathalie Timmermans, with freshmen Kaylee Brunson, Devyn Frazier and Macy McKay all expected to contribute right away.

Here’s a look at the 2012 Bronchos: CatCHer

UCO has a two-year starter back in junior star Kacie Edwards, but senior transfer Nathalie Timmermans is expected to get most of the playing time behind the plate this spring.

Edwards is a career .352 hitter and the Bronchos need her in the lineup somewhere. Timmermans is a catcher for the Dutch National Team and hit .402 with 17 home runs and 64 RBI at Oklahoma City last year.

Sophomore Carly Skinner will also see some time here. firSt baSe

The Bronchos are counting on senior Megan Whitmire to handle the first base duties for the second straight year. She was the team’s

leading hitter last season, batting .349 with eight doubles and 22 RBI while making just one error in the field, and more of the same is expected in 2012. SeCOnd baSe

Senior Brittany Weaver has started 133 straight games at second for UCO and there’s no reason that won’t continue. A defensive stopper

who can also be an sparkplug at the plate, Weaver is set for a big senior season. Freshman Macy McKay can help here if needed. SHOrtStOP

The Bronchos return sophomore Hannah Justus at this cru-cial position and she should be even better than last year, when she made just seven errors while playing every game here.

tHird baSeLots of options at the hot corner, with up to four players capable

of seeing action.Freshman Macy McKay is the front-runner to earn the bulk of

starting duty, but junior Kacie Edwards will also be used while junior Ashley Noles and sophomore Carly Skin-

ner are available if needed.

OUtfieldSeveral players are expected to earn playing

time in the outfield, though senior Kayce Raines has center field covered. She’s started all 101 games there the last two years and

is coming off a season that saw her bat .320 with 10 doubles.Speedy freshmen Kaylee Brunson and Devyn Frazier

will probably earn the majority of playing time in left and right, with both expected to have a big impact. Juniors Kacie Edwards and Ashley Noles and sophomores Carly Skinner and Kailee Roe will also vie for time.

PitCHerBoth main pitchers are back from last year and that’s good news for

the Bronchos. Senior Rachael Steverson has 35 career wins to her credit and leads the way, with sophomore Amanda McClelland look-ing to be much improved after going 13-11 last season. Those two will combine to throw the vast majority of innings, with sophomore Kailee Roe available to help out. deSiGnated Player

As usual, the Bronchos have several options. Juniors Kacie Edwards and Ashley Noles have both seen time at DP and are the top contenders, with several others available.

The Bronchos returned home to split a non-conference doubleheader with Missouri Western, then lost two of three home North Division games to Cameron before dropping a non-league twinbill to Fort Hays State to fall to 13-13 on the season.

UCO fell below .500 for the first time on March 26 with a 7-5 road loss to LSC North rival Southeastern Oklahoma, but rebounded to take the last two games of that series, 8-5 and 5-4. Brittany Weaver had a two-run double to cap a four-run seventh-inning rally that lifted the Bronchos to the final win.

UCO went San Angelo, Texas the first weekend of April for the LSC Crossover Tournament and went 5-1 in that event, winning five straight

-- including a 9-1 run-rule rout of No. 2-ranked Angelo State -- after an opening loss to WTAMU.

That got the Bronchos to 20-15 on the season, but Northeastern State took two of three league games the next weekend to drop UCO to 5-7 in LSC North play.

Central split home-and-home double-headers with Emporia State around a three-game North Division series with eventual champion Midwestern State, pulling out one win (2-1) over the No. 2-ranked Mustangs on Megan Whitmire’s run-scoring double.

The Bronchos went into the final week-end of the regular season with a chance to qualify for the LSC Tournament, but lost the first two games to Southwestern Oklahoma before finishing the season with a 6-0 shutout as Rachael Steverson hurled a one-hit gem.

Central Oklahoma battled consistency problems all season and failed to make the Lone Star Conference Tournament in its final year in the league, though the Bronchos did finish with their eighth straight winning season.

UCO ended up 25-23 on the season and finished fifth in the LSC North Division standings at 7-11.

“We played well in stretches, but we were never very consistent and we really struggled offensively at times,” UCO coach Genny Stidham said. “It was a frustrating season, but I think we learned from it.”

The Bronchos opened the season at home on Feb. 16 with a double-header sweep of Northwest Missouri, rolling to 7-1 and 8-0 wins while banging out 22 hits and getting a two-hit, five-inning shutout from fresh-man Amanda McClelland in the nightcap.

UCO split six games at the South Central Regional Challenge in Durant, Okla. that weekend, losing a pair of tough extra in-ning contests.

The Bronchos went to Canyon, Texas the next weekend for the West Texas A&M Tri-angular and beat Texas A&M International twice while losing two to the Lady Buffs.

UCO finished its early-season tournament schedule the following weekend at the Teri Zenner Memorial Classic in Joplin, Mo., going 3-1 in that two-day event to get to 10-6 on the year.

Central opened LSC North Division play March 11-12 with a three-game series at East Central, losing the first two before taking the finale 5-1 as Kayce Raines went 4-of-4 with three RBI.
