Dan Gierlak21st YearEdinboro ‘83

Dan Gierlak enters his21st season atthe helm of theEdinboroUniversity softball program. The veterancoach guidedEdinboro to aschool record 26wins a year ago,as the Fighting

Scots finished with a 2619 ledger. The 26wins surpassed the 1986 squad which finished 238. Edinboro qualified for thePennsylvania State Athletic ConferencePlayoffs for the second time in three years, and third time overall, winning a pair ofgames. Edinboro finished as the numbertwo seed out of the Western Division.

The 2009 Fighting Scot squad also hadits firstever AllAmerican, as second baseman Dana Webb was named to the thirdteam Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllAmericanTeam, and was a first team Daktronics AllAmerican. Webb also became the firstFighting Scot recognized as the PSAC WestPlayer of the Year.

Gierlak has now guided the FightingScots to six twentywin campaigns in his 20years. He owns an overall record of 3084163.

In 2008 the Fighting Scots barelymissed qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, finishing the year with an 1820 record afterlosing five of their final seven contests.

The 2007 campaign was one of itsmost successful seasons in school history,as the Fighting Scots made their secondever trip to the Pennsylvania State AthleticConference Playoffs, then were selected forthe NCAA Playoffs.

That marked the first time an Edinboroteam had been selected for NCAA postsea

son play. The Fighting Scots responded witha strong showing in the MidAtlanticRegional, upsetting nationallyrankedKutztown and Shippensburg before finallybeing eliminated.

All told, Edinboro finished with a 2122and was 127 in the PSAC West, good for second place. The season was capped by a 10win over the defending national championand 2007 NCAA Division II runnerup LockHaven. The victory snapped the LadyEagles’ 34game winning streak.

The 21 wins represented the most sincethe 2000 team went 2115. That was also thelast team to win more conference games, asthe 2000 edition went 146 in league plays.

Gierlak began his coaching career infootball before concentrating on softball. He coached the Edinboro softball team from

198994, then after a oneyear hiatus in 1995to focus solely on his duties as an assistanton former head coach Tom Hollman’s football staff, he returned in 1996 and has led theFighting Scots ever since.

After graduating from Edinboro in 1983,Gierlak moved on to Thiel College, serving asan assistant football coach in 1984. His nextstop was semiprofessional football, directing the Chicago Cowboys to a national titlein 1984 and a secondplace national finish in1985. Gierlak returned to his alma mater in1986, serving as an assistant football coachat Edinboro for nine seasons. He wasresponsible for the recruitment and coaching of eight Fighting Scot AllAmericans, including 1989 Harlon Hill Finalist Elbert Coleand Jeremy O’Day, a 1996 firstteam AllPSAC offensive lineman and a member ofthe 1998 CFL Grey Cup champion TorontoArgonauts and 2007 Grey Cup championSaskatchewan Roughriders.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlakgraduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’sDegree in Health and Physical Education. Hewas a threeyear letterman for the FightingScots football team as a defensive back.

Gierlak and his wife, the former AmyAdams, reside in Edinboro and have three

children, Alexandria Alicia (19), a freshmanon the Edinboro softball team, Daniel Jr.(Joey) (16) and Lauren (12). Amy is anEdinboro graduate, as well, and was the1989 Nancy Acker Award winner, recognizing as the top senior female athlete atEdinboro.

“The Florida trip will give us some ideawhere we are at,” Gierlak concluded. “We facea mix of teams down there. For a lot of the kidsthis will be their first time in a college game. Pluswe play in the Salem Tournament a week later. That will get us ready for conference play.”

PitchersUnlike last season when Gierlak had to

replace recordsetting pitcher Vanessa Rose, this season he has a solid anchor to the staff inBeth Mullins. The junior was a first team AllPSAC West selection a year ago when shestepped up to finish with a 1511 record and a2.25 ERA. The 15 wins was tied for the thirdhighest total in a season. In 168 innings,Mullins allowed 158 hits and 42 walks whilestriking out 117.

“If Beth can stay healthy, she has the abilityto dominate,” commented Gierlak. “She has todominate people, particularly early, to keep us ingames until we get our feet wet. If Beth candevelop consistency she will really be tough.”

The rest of the staff is comprised of mainly freshmen, but talented firstyear hurlers atthat. Gierlak sees Amanda Shields and BrittneyMackey as the next two in line behind Mullins.

“Shields’ ball has gotten a lot strongerand is breaking more and more,” assessed theveteran coach. “She’s learning to be a pitcherand not a thrower. Early on we need her tokeep us in games. We need her to come upbig and not be a freshman.”

Shields was a standout at nearby FortLeBoeuf High School, earning Class AA honorable mention AllState honors as a senior.

Mackey, meanwhile, hails fromEdgewood(Oh.) High School, where she sawmost of her action behind the plate.

“Mackey is a lot like Beth in that she’sreally learned to change speeds. She throwsextremely hard. She just needs experience. She played a lot of positions in high school, and number one wasn’t pitcher.”

Stacie Balkovic saw considerable actionearly in the season a year ago. The sophomore ended the year with a 23 record with a5.57 ERA. She displayed good control witheight walks in 27 2/3 innings.

“Stacie is our most consistent pitcher interms of hitting spots,” Gierlak pointed out.

“She’s an offspeed pitcher. She camethrough in some big games last year.”

Freshman Kari Falk was a prized recruitlast spring after earning first team Class AA AllState honors and leading Riverside(Pa.) HighSchool to backtoback WPIAL championships. She was 182 with a 0.43 ERA a year ago.

However, as good as she is on the mound,Gierlak has found she is even more valuable incenter field. He stills plans to use her pitchingtalents, however. “She knows how to win,” hegrinned. “Everything is offspeed and breaks. She’s a bigger kid with good control. She givesus a great person to close games. She can keeppeople off balance.”

Several other hurlers look to provide further depth, including Megan Rog, AmberPeluso, and Roxanne Herrington. Rog andpeluso are sophomores. Gierlak notes thatRog has developed her breaking pitches andcould be a lateinning pitcher. Peluso’s ball hasconstant movement.

Edinboro University softball coach DanGierlak has become accustomed to playing therole of underdog. Now in his 21st season asthe head coach of the Fighting Scots, Gierlakhas seen his team annually underappreciated, even in recent years when the Fighting Scotshave shown marked improvement.

So when the PSAC Western Divisioncoaches picked Edinboro to tie for fourth, orlast, with Gannon, it came as little surprise toGierlak. Of course, it’s easy to see why theFighting Scots enter the 2010 campaign as theunderdog. For starters, gone is Dana Webb,Edinboro’s firstever AllAmerican and thePSAC West Player of the Year.

Her double play mate, shortstop KatelynGurgiolo, must also be replaced, and thatwon’t be easy given her defense and base

stealing ability. Gurgiolo was a second teamAllPSAC West selection a year ago who holdsthe Edinboro career record for stolen bases.

The duo was a major reason Edinboroended the year with a rush to finish second inthe PSAC West and qualify for the PSACTournament. The Fighting Scots finished witha 2619 record, breaking the school record forwins in a season.

“I don’t know that you replace thosekids,” emphasized Gierlak. “Both were fouryear starters. You try to get kids that can develop like they did. Dana made so many big playsoffensively and defensively. But we have kids inthe middle who will develop. We’ll be strongerin time. People forget that those kids (Webband Gurgiolo) took their lumps as freshmen.”

Ah, speaking of freshmen. It’s a catch 22situation, as Gierlak has put together backtoback outstanding recruiting classes. Whilegreat for the future development of the program, the roster at times bears the look of adaycare roster.

Talk about the growing pains! “Wecould have at times as many as seven freshmen on the field,” admitted Gierlak. “Plus youthrow in the sophomores that played lastyear. We’re young at every spot; very youngat every spot. That concerns me. We can bebetter defensively this year but we’ll makemore mistakes at the beginning of the seasondue to our youth.”

The influx of youth has given Gierlaksomething he hasn’t had in quite some time –depth. “Our strength is going to be eventuallywe’ll have very good depth in pitching that wehaven’t had in the past. It’s tough when youhave to replace three infielders. We havemore depth there. I’m real encouraged by ouroutfield. We’ll be very good … but in time,”he cautioned.

It all gets underway for the Fighting Scotswith the annual southern trip to the RebelSpring Games in Kissimmee, Florida on March712. Edinboro will face an improved schedulein the Sunshine State, facing the likes of C.W.Post, Indianapolis, MinnesotaDuluth andTruman State.

Herrington is freshman who was a second team Section 6 choice as a senior atDunkirk(NY) High School. She has a gooddrop ball.

InfieldersThe Fighting Scots must replace starters at

first base, second base and shortstop.Obviously replacing the double play combination of Dana Webb at second base and KatelynGurgiolo at shortstop will be extremely difficult.Gierlak will call on a host of players, mostly firstyear performers, to fill the middle infield voids.

For starters, there’s Jessica VanDamia, afreshman who was at Edinboro a year ago butsat out the season. She can play both middleinfield spots and could also see time at firstbase. “She’s got all the tools to be a greatplayer,” raved Gierlak. “She has a strong batand a strong arm, and she’s very athletic. Shelooks to be a leader, too.”

Freshman Marissa Pullo is described byGierlak as “probably the quickest playeraround the bases I’ve seen”. He continued, “She’s very smart with a great work ethic, andshe has a great swing. She has to take Dana’splace. She plays a lot like Dana in the field.”

Pullo was a third team NYSSWA Class AAllState selection as a pitcher, along withearning AllWestern New York and AllCatholichonors for Holy Angels Academy(NY).

Brittney Price saw plenty of action a yearago while playing second base, shortstop andthird base. She ended up hitting .241 in 108 atbats, with a home run and 13 RBIS. “Brittney isone of the most versatile athletes I’ve had,”related Gierlak. “She will also play some firstbase, and can even play the outfield. Shedeveloped into a big game player last year.We look for her to pick up where she left off.”

Sophomore Caitlin Baer is one of the fewreturning players in the infield mix, but she iscoming off an injury. She played in just 12games a year ago and was hitless in 12 at bats. She figures in the mix at second base.

“Caitlin’s getting more comfortable inthe infield, moreso at second base,” relatedGierlak. “She’s very steady and has a verygood swing. The more reps we get her thebetter she’ll be. She has very good hands.”

Freshman T’ana Abt is another highly

regarded recruit who can play both second andshortstop, and may also see time at third base. She helped Fredonia(NY) High School reach theClass B state finals the last three years.

“T’ana is a big, strong kid who hits the ballwell,” assessed Gierlak. “She has all the toolsand takes to coaching very well. She has a verystrong arm and has developed soft hands. Ayear from now she’ll start somewhere.”

On the corners, Jade Thrower returnswith a big bat for her sophomore season.Thrower hit .271 with six home runs and 19RBIs, the six home runs tied for fourth in season. She saw most of her action at designatedhitter a year ago, but it’s hoped she can holddown first base.

“Jade has worked hard at becoming aninfielder,” related Gierlak. “Because of her batshe has to play. She can change a game withone swing.”

Sophomore Jess White and freshmanKate Watrous also look for time at first base.White is an improving hitter with good power.A year ago she appeared in just two gameswith a double in two at bats.

Watrous saw most of her time at shortstop while playing for a strong Corry HighSchool team, and she is an option at shortstop, but Gierlak likes what he’s seen of her atfirst base. “Kate has a very good glove,” henoted, “along with a cannon for an arm. Shefinds ways to get to balls.”

Freshman Stephanie Cassidy is thefavorite to open the year at third base. “I’vebeen very, very impressed with her workhabits,” Gierlak commented. “She swings agreat bat and is light years ahead of being afreshman. She is extremely mature for a freshman. She has a beautiful swing, along withpower, and has a nice glove.” She hit .413 ayear ago at North Allegheny(Pa.) High School.

Senior Amanda Weeman is the topreserve at third base. The diminutive seniorplayed in nine games last year, but did not get ahit in seven at bats. “Amanda has worked hardover the past year to develop as a player,”Gierlak stated. “She just eats up bunts. Plusshe’s a great kid.”

Ashley Holmes, another senior, is also inreserve as is junior Tara Townsend, a transferfrom LaRoche. Holmes has moved back and

forth from the outfield to the infield and hasbeen a very dependable player. She played inthree games last year with three at bats.Townsend attended Edinboro a year ago butdid not play softball. She can play first andthird base and has shown marked improvement with the glove.

On final factor in the infield is AmandaCoressel. The junior will get a late start afterplaying for the women’s basketball team. She’ll go from guard to shortstop. Coresselwas an outstanding high school player whothen went on to play at Owens CommunityCollege. She hit .405 with seven doubles, twotriples, and two home runs with 19 RBIs, alongwith 10 stolen bases last year at Owens.

“Amanda could be our ace in the hole,”Gierlak predicted. “She’s an athlete who canplay short, second, the outfield, and help as apinch runner. I’m anxious to see her in gamesituations. Mentally she’s a tough kid.”

The Fighting Scots are wellstocked atcatcher. Aimee Sisson caught all but one gamea year ago, and proved to be a strong defensivecatcher with a promising bat. Sisson hit .250and drove in 22 runs, tied for second on theteam. She showed developing power withseven doubles, a triple and two home runs.

“I thought Aimee should have been thePSAC Rookie of the Year,” stressed Gierlak.“She caught every game but one. She developed into a leader and has great work habits. She came up big in big games. She’s developed a lot more arm strength and has a quickrelease. Her bat will always be there.”

The addition of freshman Ashley Black willallow Gierlak to give Sisson some time off anduse her at designated hitter. Black was a firstteam AllRegion selection at catcher a year agowhile playing at Fort LeBoeuf High School.

“Ashley’s gotten better as a catcher, buther forte is hitting,” admitted Gierlak. “Theball explodes off her bat. We’re working withher at first base and she’ll DH. We need herbat in the lineup.

Two other players add further depthbehind the plate. Caitlyn Rog is a sophomorewho played in four games last year, going 1for6. Freshman Brielle Gaurrich played herhigh school ball at Deer Lakes(Pa.) HighSchool, where she hit .412 for her career.

OutfieldersThe biggest surprise in the outfield has

been Kari Falk. A year ago at this time Gierlakwas elated to have the freshman coming toEdinboro as a pitcher. But she has reallyopened his eyes as a center fielder. “She hasthe ability to be the best outfielder we’vehad,” exclaimed Gierlak. “She gets to ballsyou don’t think she can. Plus she hits the ballwell, and has a very strong arm. With our fieldyou need a center fielder who can run.”

A host of other players will look to fill thecorner outfield positions. Another freshman,Caitie Weber from Corry High School, looks tobe the favorite in left field. As a senior sheearned Class AAA honorable mention AllStateaccolades. Gierlak noted that her speed willcome in handy.

Three returnees in the mix are Carrie Hall,Lauren Smith and Missy Conrad. Hall saw considerable action last year as a freshman, hitting.221 while starting 35 games. She had five doubles and 13 RBIs while stealing five bases. Shecould be the regular in right field.

“Carrie has worked hard on changing herapproach at the plate,” noted Gierlak. “Shecan slap and bunt. I think she’s a more consistent player this year. I think she’s really goingto blossom this year.”

Smith is a junior who hit .294 in 51 at bats, with seven of her 15 hits doubles. “Lauren isvery strong, and a very coachable player,” saidGierlak. “Her playing time will be decided byher bat. When she hits, she hits it well. Sheneeds to put it all together and be consistent.”

Conrad is a senior who Gierlak notes hasreally developed. A year ago she played in 20games with eight at bats.

What would the outfield be without acouple more freshmen. Gierlak is all too familiar with Alex Gierlak, his daughter. She playedsecond base and pitched at General McLaneHigh School, but has made a quick conversionto the outfield. Her biggest asset right now isher speed, and she could prove helpful both asa pinch runner and pinch hitter.

Breanna Price is the younger sister ofBrittany Price. She did not join the team untilJanuary, but looks to be a pretty good athlete. She has a strong arm and good power.
