Winter health boosters: Honey and CinnamonHoney and cinnamon are two wonderful ways to boost the immune system this winter. Aromatic CinnamonThere’s something about the smell of cinnamon. Real estate agents will confess that using freshly baked cinnamon-spiced biscuits is a subtle trick to entice potential buyers to buy a house. Cinnamon brings a feeling of warmth and homeliness to an environment. The wonderful thing is that cinnamon does not only smell and taste good, it also has great health properties. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which is not only good to combat the symptoms colds and flu, but when combined with honey, may also help ease joint inflammation in arthritis. If you’re diabetic, generously sprinkle cinnamon on your coffee, pancakes or cereal – cinnamon is great for reducing blood sugar levels.

Helpful HoneyDid you know that honey was so important that ancient Egyptians used it like a form of currency, like gold; offered it to their gods and even buried it along with the dead in tombs.Honey is one of nature’s most amazing products. Honey can help heal cuts and abrasions, make your skin softer and your hair silkier. To help during winter, honey is anti-bacterial and antiseptic. It’s like nature’s own antibiotic – great to treat colds and flu. Ever wonder why so many throat lozenges are honey-flavoured? Honey coats and soothes a sore throat. Do you need any more of an excuse to indulge in two of nature’s tasty treats this winter?

SAFETY TIPS FOR KIDS

Young children and toddlers can be a handful. No matter how good an eye you keep on them, accidents can still happen in the home.Child-proof your house by taking some precautions:

• Keep electric sockets covered.• Lock up all detergents, poisonous products, medicines

and cleaning liquids.• Never leave a baby in a bath. They can drown in even shallow water.• Make sure your baby’s cot is free of clothing, excess blankets, pillows or toys which can lead to suffocation.• Keep toilet lids closed.• Close doors to rooms when you are not in them. A curious toddler could wander into a room in a split second an accident could happen without you realising it.

X-FACTOR Lifestyle MEDICAL DOCTORX-Factor Lifestyle Medical Centre opened doors recently in March 2012.

This is a General Medical Practice with a difference. Under the caring hand of Dr Fayruz Sattar, MBChB (UCT), the centre seeks to treat patients with the aim of empowering them to live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

X-Factor Lifestyle Medical Centre offers the full services of a general medical practice, which includes the treatment of acute and chronic medical illnesses, health screening and general medical check-ups.

However, the difference lies in the passion that Dr Fayruz Sattar has for helping patients understand that "prevention is always better than cure". She has extensive experience in general medical practice. "I have been practising for twenty years and in this time I have found that doctors need to impart this message with enthusiasm and vigour", she says.As part of her special interest in lifestyle interventions, Dr Fayruz Sattar has recently completed three years of study towards a Master's Degree in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine.

Better management of habits such as unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, smoking and stress is essential for optimal health.

X-Factor Lifestyle Medical Centre is conveniently situated in Stegman Rd, off Main Rd, Claremont. Street parking is usually available in Stegman Rd. Free, reserved parking for patients is also available at Draper Square, which is immediately adjacent to the building.

Leading (Business) through difficult times.

It is often true in our business lives, that we wish that we didn't always have to lead. Times that we would gladly hand over the reigns to someone else through difficult times and then just take over again when the ride is a bit smoother again. Well the truth is that ready or not, these times will come. So we might as well be prepared for them. Let's consider a few principles which help in leading oneself and your business through times when Leadership is not always fun......

1. FACE REALITY: Cut your losses quickly and define your reality. Find out exactly where you are as your business is built on reality. We need to keep it real as disappointment is the gap between reality and expectations......LEADERS ARE REALISTS and have the responsibility of Truth telling. 2. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF........ Not the kind of flaky, wishy-washy believing in yourself, BUT a deep inward conviction of belief! It is impossible to show that belief on the outside consistently if it is not on the inside. Remember that during difficult times the first thing that a leader faces is the questions of insecurity. When we fail to believe in ourselves, the whole ‘believe’ environment fails......believe in your mission, believe in others and believe in your business.

3. BE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU DOING........During tough times, passion leaks. The tougher the times, the more it leaks...and you can't afford this as passion provides ENERGY...Passion sets you apart from everybody else....Difficult times squeezes your passion and sucks air out of passion and you lose your creativity. "IF YOU DON'T LOVE WHERE YOU ARE NOW, YOU WON'T LOVE WHERE YOU GOING!"

4. Make GOOD DECISIONS.......The average person when challenged makes bad choices based on what are the “convenient” choices. It is during these times that one should be making value-based choices and therefore we should have our values in place before the crisis. During these difficult times we are called upon to make courageous decisions and not comfortable ones.

I trust that the application of these simple, yet powerful principles will assist you in leading your business through difficult times as we continue to "Lead from where we are".
