Emission System Maintenance

Gasoline EnginesThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency andin California, the Air Resources Board have cer-tified that the emission control systems of yourvehicle comply with the applicable exhaustemission standards. This vehicle also complieswith the applicable Canadian Motor VehicleEmission Standards. To ensure that the emission control systemoperates as intended, regular maintenance

must be performed on all vehicle componentsthat affect the composition of the exhaust gasand vapor emissions. The vehicle owner is responsible for the regularmaintenance of the emission control systemand for using premium-grade unleaded fuel withan octane number of at least 91 (specified onthe filling pump) in all models that have a gaso-line engine, unless otherwise stated.Refer to your Service and Warranty Informationbooklet and Operator's Manual for additionalinformation. If maintenance work on the emission controlsystem is not carried out properly, this may leadto repairs that are not covered by the emissioncontrol system warranty.Explanations of each maintenance job are givenon (Y page 5).

Emission Control System Caution –Gasoline EnginesYour Mercedes-Benz vehicle is equipped withboth a three-way catalyst and a closed loop oxy-gen sensor system to comply with currentexhaust emission regulations. Keep your vehiclein proper operating condition by following ourrecommendedmaintenance instructions as out-lined.The following must be adhered to:a) In all gasoline engine models, use onlypremium unleaded gasoline with an anti-knock index of at least 91 (as displayed onthe pump) unless otherwise specified. Dam-age to the engine could occur if premium unlea-ded fuel is not used. Refer to the Operator'sManual for special precautions.b) Leaded gasoline should not be usedunder any circumstances. Damage to theemission control components will result.c) In non flex-fuel capable gasoline engineequipped vehicles, ethanol blends greaterthan E10 should not be used. Damage to theengine could occur if improper fuels are used.Refer to the Operator's Manual for special pre-cautions.d) In select models, the use of Ethanol (E85)is also permissible. Models capable of alsooperating with E85 are identified by a label onthe fuel filler flap reading "Premium gasoline orE85 only!" Do not use Ethanol fuel (E85) to oper-ate any vehicle unless it is specifically identified

as Ethanol fuel (E85) compatible. Damage to theengine could occur if improper fuels are used.Refer to the Operator's Manual for special pre-cautions.e) The specified engine maintenance jobsmust be performed completely and at therequired intervals. Properly functioning sparkplugs for instance are important for the servicelife of the catalysts. Failure to properly performthe specified maintenance jobs may adverselyaffect the emission control system on the vehi-cle and reduce its service life.f) The operation of the emission control sys-tem must not be altered in any way. Altera-tions are not permissible by law. In addition, alterations may result in damage to the cata-lysts, increased fuel consumption, and impairedengine running conditions.g) Irregular engine running conditionsshould be corrected immediately by anauthorized Mercedes-Benz Dealer. Suchirregular running conditions can influence theproper function of the emission control system. If the check engine indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster illuminates when the engine is run-ning, it indicates a possible malfunction of theenginemanagement system or emission controlsystem. We recommend that you have the malfunctionchecked as soon as possible.

Emission Control System Caution –Diesel EnginesYour Mercedes-Benz is equipped with emissioncontrol devices to comply with current dieselexhaust emission regulations where the vehicleis certified for sale. Keep your vehicle in properoperating condition by following our recommen-ded maintenance instructions as outlined. The following must be adhered to:a) Diesel engines require ULTRA-LOW SUL-FUR DIESEL (ULSD) FUEL (15 ppm SULFURMAXIMUM) that meets the ASTM D975standard. Failure to use ULTRA-LOW SULFURDIESEL (ULSD) FUEL can severely damage thevehicle's exhaust after-treatment device.b) Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc. approves theuse of B5 (standard ULSD which may con-tain a maximum of 5% biodiesel) in all Blue-TEC diesel engines.

Diesel fuels containing a higher percentage ofbiodiesel content, e.g. B20, as well as straightbiodiesel may cause damage to your engine/fuel system and are not approved. Only useapproved biodiesel. Biodiesel can be refinedfrom a variety of raw materials resulting inwidely varying properties. Approved biodieselmeets the ASTM D6751 specifications and hasthe necessary oxidation stability (min. 6h,proved with EN 14112 method) to prevent dam-age to the system from deposits and/or corro-sion. The use of non-approved biodiesel maydamage the fuel system. Please ask your service station for further infor-mation. If the B5 biodiesel blend is not suffi-ciently labeled to clearly indicate that it meetsthe above standards, please do not use it. TheMercedes-Benz Limited Warranty does notcover damage caused by the use of fuels notmeeting Mercedes-Benz approved fuel stand-ards.c) The specified engine maintenance jobshave to be performed completely and at therequired intervals.d) The operation of the emission controlsystem must not be altered in any way.Alterations are not permissible by law. In addi-tion, alterations may result in damage to thecatalysts, increased fuel consumption, andimpaired engine running conditions. If the check engine indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster illuminates when the engine is run-ning, it indicates a possible malfunction of theenginemanagement system or emission controlsystem. We recommend that you have the malfunctionchecked as soon as possible.

BlueTEC exhaust gas aftertreatmentwith AdBlue® (DEF1)Diesel engine, please refer to the Operator'sManual for information on AdBlue® (DEF). Theinformation can be found in the "Service prod-ucts and filling capacities" section of the "Tech-nical data" chapter under "DEF".The BlueTEC exhaust aftertreatment systemrequires a reducing agent (AdBlue® [DEF]), inorder to function properly. Maintaining the leveland condition of the reducing agent is part of theregular maintenance service work. Under nor-

mal driving conditions, one tankful of reducingagent should suffice until the next maintenanceservice.AdBlue® (DEF) is a non-flammable, non-toxic,colorless and odorless, water-soluble liquid.

! Only use AdBlue® (DEF) complying withISO 22241. Do not add special additives toAdBlue® (DEF) and do not dilute AdBlue®(DEF) with water. Otherwise, the BlueTECexhaust gas aftertreatment system could bedamaged.

Description of Emission SystemMain-tenance Jobs

The composition of exhaust emissions is influ-enced not only by the special emission controlequipment, but also by various engine compo-nents and their adjustments. Therefore, emission system maintenance mustinclude these engine components. Some main-tenance jobs are actually only tests. They areimportant however, because they allow earlydetection of discrepancies which can later leadto increased exhaust emissions. It is generallyless expensive to have such items adjustedimmediately rather than allowing them to con-tribute to costly repairs. The maintenance inter-vals have been determined so that the vehicle, under normal conditions, should operate prop-erly between services.

Engine oil and filter changeChange the engine oil and oil filter according tothe specified maintenance intervals. If oil con-sumption should increase, determine the causeand take necessary corrective steps. Do notreset the ASSYST PLUS service interval displayif the oil level is topped up or changed outsidethe specified maintenance intervals.

Replace engine air filterThe engine air filter must be replaced accordingto the specified maintenance intervals. Undersevere dust conditions the engine air filtershould be replaced more frequently than indi-cated by the ASSYST PLUS service interval dis-

play. Clean engine air filter cover and housingprior to removal of engine air filter.

Replace fuel filterReplace the fuel filter according to the specifiedmaintenance intervals.

Check engine poly-V-belt conditionThe poly-V-belt is subject to wear and aging. Itmust be checked for cracks and wear accordingto the specified maintenance intervals. Replacepoly-V-belt if necessary.

Replace spark plugsSpark plugs are subject to electrode erosion andmust be replaced according to the specifiedmaintenance intervals, or more frequently asmay be required when subject to severe oper-ating conditions.

Filling up AdBlue® (DEF2)Fill up AdBlue® (DEF) according to the specifiedmaintenance intervals.Refer to Operator's Manual for additional infor-mation, e.g. to correctly identify the filler neckfor AdBlue® (DEF) in your vehicle.
