DIgITAL AID ASIAApril 24th, 2013@ zuma Restaurant, Bangkok
While everybody talks about e-commerce, mobile, and social media marketing, basically how to increase sales via digital channels, there is another big opportunity that has been neglected so far: how to leverage emerging technologies, digital and social media, and online engagement for sustainable capacity building and responsible tourism development, especially in developing tourism regions. This is a big opportunity to drive poverty alleviation. While lots of tourism development master plans focus on the important aspects of tourism development and feasibility, technology and social media has not been integrated so far, beyond looking at social media when it comes to crisis management, and even that is still fairly new for many organizations.
Digital Aid has a mission to help developing tourism regions across Asia to learn how to leverage emerging technology and digital media for capacity building to develop tourism in a responsible way.

Engage with the influencers: Introducing Blogger Match-Up in Asia for the travel and tourism industry is simply the best opportunity for your company, client, destination or organization to get in front of travel and lifestyle bloggers, writers and new media creators.
In the age of citizen journalism, it becomes more and more challenging for companies to find and connect with digital influencers, from bloggers, micro-bloggers, and social network connectors. Not only do many of these influencers under cover, but can have a huge following, but also the rules of engagement are vastly different from dealing with traditional media.
The Blogger Match-Up is a unique exchange to meet influential citizen journalists, connect with them, and leverage their following by engaging them with exhibiting travel products and services, including hotels, destinations, airlines, restaurants, tours, shopping, and more. The Blogger Match-Up also educates on how to engage with these influential bloggers, in order to avoid unexpected surprises.
Digital Aid will drive awareness. However on the other hand, Digital Aid goes grass roots by holding boot camps in developing tourism regions. These workshops are designed around a proprietary 12-point plan that is delivered to these tourism communities. Past boot camps were held in Cambodia, Laos, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Thailand. This is an initiative that is supported by PATA and MTCO, as well as the respective governmental tourism administrations.

The Chinese Middle Class is already larger than the entire population of the United States. In 15 years, the Chinese middle class will reach 800 million. Chinese demand for international travel is still young. But it is expected to grow by 17% annually over the next decade, driven by rising incomes and aspirations. There will be an average
of 25 million first-time Chinese travellers every year, or 70,000 every day, for the next 10 years. International travel from China would become a major source of growth for providers in the destination countries.
Chinese consumers are finding out about new destinations and travel services, such as hotel or cruise brands via the Internet. With over 550 million Internet users in China in December 2012,
more than 80% of Chinese travellers research and educate themselves about destinations and brands online. Chinese consumers are increasingly being influenced by digital and social media marketing – 90% of respondents to a 2011 Forbes survey of more than 300 China-based senior executives indicate that digital and mobile marketing are a critical part of the mix for reaching Chinese consumers, especially the younger and affluent demographic.
In an action-packed half-day session, the China Travel Social Media Boot Camp will help companies understand how to reach and connect with “the new Chinese tourist” and affluent consumers, by leveraging the complex social media landscape in China.
