Why Use Facebook? It’s where the people are!

Facebook is fun and allows us to easily interact with friends and family. We may even spend

and it allow us to share our thoughts and experiences with others.

For business it is a way to expand connections and introduce your product or service. With

Facebook you can engage and interact with your customers like never before. You can

promote special offers, get instant feedback on new product ideas, create buzz for your

company, and create a community around your business.

But,

there is a Right and Wrong Way to Use Facebook

for Business

04

Page 5: How To Use Facebook To Increase Your Business

#1 Use Facebook Pages

Pages are for organizations, businesses, celebrities,

and bands to broadcast great information in an

official, public manner to people who choose to

connect with them. Similar to profiles, Pages can be

enhanced with applications that help the entity

communicate and engage with their audiences, and

capture new audiences virally through friend

recommendations, News Feed stories, Facebook

events, and beyond.

#2 Be SocialPeople are on Facebook to socialize, learn, share, and find out what their friends are doing.

They are not there to be sold to. That’s not to say you can’t sell things on Facebook. You just

need to take a different approach. Think of it as a public relations function, where you are

out there networking, finding out what people need, making your presence known, sharing

things of interest, and creating a fun and stress-free environment where people can freely

communicate.

Facebook for business excels in brand marketing and lead generation. Once someone

becomes a fan you have direct access to them and the opportunity to interact with them on

a regular basis. But don’t over-promote to them or you’ll lose them. Post as if you were a

friend and promote no more than 20% of the time.

#3 Set up Your Page Right08

Don’t just use your logo for

the profile pic. Maximize the

space, it can be as large as

180×540 pixels.

Completely fill out the info

area and saturate it with your

business’ keywords.

“Like” other pages from your

page. These are your featured

“likes.

Get creative with your photo strip. These are randomly selected, however you can

hide any photos you don’t want to appear by clicking the “x” in the upper right-hand

corner. Also, be sure to utilize the description area including links to products or your

website.

After you have at least twenty-five fans get your own custom “vanity URL”

(facebook.com/yourpagename)

#4 Customize your PageThe whole purpose of fan pages is to convert visitors into fans, whom you can eventually

convert to customers. To increase your visitor-to-fan conversions you will need a custom

Facebook graphic for your page. Visitors are 50% more likely to become a fan if you have a

call-to-action telling them to “like” your page, and the only way to do that right now is with

a customized tab (a page within your page). Your custom page should:

Grab the visitor’s attention (i.e., it should look cool)

Create a desire to learn more (interest them with hidden or exclusive content)

Command them to take an action (“like” the page)

#5 Engage Your FansThe way Facebook works is, the more

conversations are generated, the more

opportunity there is to drive additional

traffic to your page. So the goal is to get

these conversations rolling. You do that by

posing questions, announcing new

products, and by sharing news, quotes,

information, etc. Almost anything goes,

but it needs to be of interest to your

particular set of fans.

14

Each industry is different so you’ll need to experiment with what works for yours. Take advantage of page insights to track what is working vs. what is not.

Status Do’s and Don’ts15

DO Mix up your media…use text, questions, links, photos and video

DO know your audience

DO post like a friend, not like a business

DON’T over-promote. Keep a 80/20 rule of content-to-promo ratio

DO post regularly. Generally 2-3 times week is good. But be consistent.

DO post outside business hours. Most people check Facebook on their free time…

before work, lunchtime, after work and into the evenings.

DO keep status updates short. 80 characters or less is best

DO reply to fan comments and DON’T ignore them.

DON’T just auto publish your blog updates. Actively engage fans in other ways.

been an easier way to reach

targeted people.

Ad Tips Target your audience by age, education, and interests

Keep visitors within Facebook with your ad going to your Facebook page, not your

website, unless you have a timely promotion or lead capturing set up on your landing page.

Test several versions of the ad with different images and ad copy.

Use sponsored stories when possible. Studies have shown they convert 3 times better

than a standard ad.

75 % of Brand ‘Likes’ on Facebook come from advertisements
