History of sci-fi movies
Science fiction movies was first developed in the 1900s however it wasn’t taken seriously by the movie industry or the public therefore it took a few decades before people started to appreciate the genre and take it seriously.
One of the main elements which was required when making science fiction movies was special effects therefore this made it difficult for the motion picture industry to produce these type of movies because they didn’t have the technology which was required to create the special effects.
First ever science-fiction movie to be made
One of the movies which would be considered as the first science-fiction movie to be made was a movie called “Le Voyage dans La Lune” which was a French silent movie directed and created by Georges Melies in 1902. This sci-fi movie was basically about two characters trying to launch a spacecraft to the moon in a large cannon. The movie was also humorous which is less popularly found in the sci-fi movies of today. Although the movie only had a duration of about 12 minutes, it became popular across France and other European countries too.
Continuation of Sci-fi movies
In the 1920s, many American film makers started to using sci-fi films to predict the future and what might happen in future generations to come. Therefore this required advanced technology which often made the movies more expensive. One of the most important pioneers of science-fiction movies was a German-Austrian film maker, director and producer called Fritz Lang.
In 1927 he made the most expensive science fiction movie up to that point which was a film set in year 2026. This influenced many other film makers and producers to produce other science-fiction movies. Over the years different elements of science fiction were added in to many popular movies such as Frankenstein, Doctor X, Dr Cyclops and several James Bond movies.
21st Century science -fiction movies
As technology grew and the world wide web was also introduced, this made science fiction movies better because the editors could use new software to make different effects such as wave movements, explosion and even face clusters and advertising became even easier.
Over the years science-fiction movies drifted from the whole space war themed films to more fantasy movies such as The matrix, Independence day and Avatar which was the most expensive sci-fi film to be made costing a sum of $237 million to make.
