Corporate New Ventures at

Procter & Gamble

- “Procter & Gamble has a history of creating

new to the world products through

technology – from fluoride to disposable

diapers – and we must continue to do that.”

- We began to realize that there is a greater

opportunity to have a combination of market

driven innovation and technically driven

innovation beyond what we have done

historically.

- This is where Corporate New Ventures and

the sector venture group comes in.

Corporate New Ventures at

Procter & Gamble

- CNV is a small but important complement to

the strong R&D engine that has always

driven our new product development.

- The payoff from tis goes well beyond the

brands we create.

- The processes and the excitement that start

in the venture groups are spreading in a new

climate of entrepreneurship throughout the

company.

- What is the term we used in Creativity, Inc. to

describe this?

Corporate New Ventures at

Procter & Gamble

- Why was the group formed?

- What do we call a “members work

environment” in class?

- How did they effect change?

- How did they know, and what were the

results?

- Why did CNV have to move out of their

space, and what did Craig say to explain?

Corporate New Ventures at

Procter & Gamble

- “What happened in the early days was that

we had all these scientists talking to each

other, and there was much cross-fertilization

of technology. Learning how to deal with

Calcium in the wash water for our synthetic

detergents led to a knowledge of how to deal

with Calcium in the dental area, which led to

P&G getting into the prescription drug

business and dealing with osteoporosis.”

- COO, Durk Jager

Corporate New Ventures at

Procter & Gamble

- Where does most of P&G’s early innovation

trace back to?

- Provide an example.

- How was the business organized

geographically, and who was it managed by?

- How were the business units organized, and

why?

- What did this organization create?

Corporate New Ventures at

Procter & Gamble

- “We realized that we needed to get our best

people into that group, because we all felt

that it was most important work we needed to

do. It was difficult starting that group, and

getting quality talent over there in most

functions. Because of our company’s

rewards systems, and because it was

something new, many felt it was an “off the

track” position”

- Steve Barrett
