Some verbs are follow by a gerund.
Base form of verb + -ing
Some verbs are follow by an infinitive
to + Base form of verb
Some certain verbs can be follow by either a gerund or an
infinitive do have change in meaning. Sometimes the difference in meaning is
subtle; sometimes it is very obvious.
For example
• He will never forget having his
calls monitored. The
experience was so
demeaning. (= recall or
remember the experience)
For example
• The manager was fired
because he forgot to have his
staff’s phone calls monitored.
The experience was so
demeaning. (= remember to do
something)
• Don’t forget to meet her at 10 this morning. (= You should meet her at 10…)I’ll never forget meeting her for the first time. (= I’ll never forget when I met her the first time.)
• Annette forgot to lock the door before she left her home. (= Annette didn't lock the door).Annette forgot locking the door before she left her home. (= Annette locked the door, but doesn't remember the action).
For exampleShe stopped calling her friends
during office hours. (= stop the
activity of calling )
For exampleWhen she realized how late
she was working, she stop to
call home. (= stopped doing
something else in other to call)
•We stopped to drink a cup of coffee. (= We stopped in order to drink a cup of coffee.)Why don’t you stop drinking coffee? (= Why
don’t you give up drinking coffee?
Jason stopped playing the piano at six. =
Jason was playing the piano, and he stopped doing that at six o'clock.
Jason stopped to play the piano at six. = Jason was doing something else. He stopped that action, and began to play the piano at six o'clock.
